PRINCESS BADOURA: A Tale from the Arabian Nights Retold by Laurence Housman

London Hodder and Stoughton [1913] - First edition. With 10 fantastic tipped-in colour plates by Edmund Dulac, each with a captioned and decorated tissue guard, decorated titlepage and with Persian style border to each page of text. 4to, publisher's original white cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt and turquoise on the upper cover and spine, decorative "peacock" endpapers in turquoise. [iv], 113 pp. An unusually well preserved, lovely, bright copy of this elusive book. Some very minimal evidence of age, the plates all very fine, the text very clean. FIRST EDITION AND A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THIS WONDERFUL BOOK. Dulac's love of the oriental style is never more apparent than in these illustrations, perfectly suited to the story of a Princess of China and the Island Prince. His luxurious use of color and line carries his audience away into the exotic. The book is especially important in Dulac’s oeuvre as it marked a change unprecedented for Dulac. "There was now no single position from which an observer could view the entire scene; he must move about within the picture in order to see everything. Dulac began simplifying the elements which make up a picture and turned them into stylized units,.all arranged so as to make up a composition which carried the eye round the painting. To give variety to these compositional units Dulac adopted the Persian emphasis on heavily patterned surfaces, as in an illustration where a robber’s baggy trousers, with an elaborate motif, are used as a flat decorative unit that happens to be trouser shaped. The jeweled dots.are now used by Dulac to make deliberate patterns." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Description of the educational exhibit of cocoa and chocolate... [Together with:] Educational exhibit. Cocoa and chocolate prepared by Walter Baker & Co.

"Dorchester, MA": "Walter Baker & Co., Ltd.". 1913. "Oblong 8vo, pp. 39, [1], followed by 6 high-quality chromolithograph plates of Walter Baker products; 5 other full-page illustrations; fine in original maroon cloth, gilt-lettered on upper cover. The educational exhibit consists of what presumably is a salesman's wooden lacquered case (approx. 9½"" x 5½"" x 3½""), with a hinged lid on top, and a brass plaque and pull; mounted inside the lid are 4 Baker products, and inside the box itself are four apothecary viles, each still containing Baker products! Uncommon salesman's sample case and companion handbook which were released to promote the Walter Baker ""health-giving breakfast cocoa and chocolate."" The text explains the transformation of the cocoa seeds from the raw material, describes the early uses of cocoa and chocolate, a description and analysis of the cocoa seeds, the cocoa tree and the gathering of the crop. The four vials represent the various stages of cocoa production, and the cocoa tin mounted 1nside the lid preserves the trademarked chocolate server logo, La Belle Chocolatiere, adopted by the company in 1883 after a painting by the Swiss artists Jean-Etienne Liotard. Founded in 1780 the Walter Baker Company grew throughout the 19th century and into the 20th becoming one of the largest in the United States. Purchased by the Forbes syndicate in 1896, the brand was eventually absorbed in 1979 by Kraft Foods."

Original caricature signed, believed to be of the French composer Paul Dukas (1865-1935)

Octavo, 189 x 149 mm. Dated 1913. Blue pen and wash. Slightly worn and foxed, especially to verso; creased at upper edge and central fold; remnants of adhesive to upper corners of verso. Together with: A handsome postcard photograph of Caruso seated, stylishly dressed, with cigarette and cane in hand. 136 x 84 mm., with the name of the photographer's studio (Brogi), printed to lower right edge of recto, the name and London address of the publisher Breitkopf and Härtel and "Printed in Germany" printed to verso. Slightly browned; remnants of adhesive to verso. . "With his original treatment of traditional forms, his highly inventive approach to musical drama, and his importance as a teacher and writer, [Paul Dukas] occupies a central position in French musical history... Dukas was not only an influence on many French 20th-century composers and others such as Zemlinsky and Berg, but also remains important in his own right. His reputation rests on only a small number of compositions, notably the Piano Sonata, Ariane et Barbe-bleue, the ballet La Péri and L'apprenti sorcier. Dukas's influence as a critic, from 1892 to 1932, can be compared with Debussy's; his informed opinions reveal great sensitivity to the musical and aesthetic changes that took place during the period."         The Book of the Dead: The Papyrus of Ani (Two text volumes plus a separate volume of 37 folding color plates)

London/New York: Philip Lee Warner/G.P. Putnam, 1913. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. New and revised edition. design to front and gilt titles and image of Thoth to spine. Top edges gilt. The Papyrus of Ani, which was acquired by the Trustees of the British Museum in 1888, is the largest, the most perfect, and the best illuminated of all the papyri containing copies of the Theban Recension of the Book of the Dead. Its rare Vignettes, Hymns, and Chapters, and its descriptive Rubrics, render it of unique importance for the study of the Book of the Dead, and it holds a very high place among the funerary papyri that were written between B.C. 1500 and B.C. 1350. Although it contains less than one-half of the Chapters which formed the Great Corpus of texts written for the benefit of the dead, it can be concluded that Ani?'s exalted official position , as Chancellor of the ecclesiastical revenues and endowments of all the Temples of Thebes and Abydos, will have ensured the inclusion of all the Chapters which an educated Egyptian deemed essential for salvation. The Papyrus of Ani is, in short, typical of the Book of the Dead in vogue among Theban nobles of his time. Volume one of the present edition contains the general Introduction, with chapters on the History of the Book of the Dead and on Egyptian Religion. Then there is a full description of the Papyrus of Ani, plate by plate. Volume two contains a complete transcript of the Papyrus in hieroglyphic type, with English translation, notes, and an index. The third volume contains 37 large color folding plates of the entire papyrus. All plates are present and in fantastic condition. There are some tiny corner bumps to upper right on all three volumes and some light rubbing to the gilt along spines of all volumes. Blind stamp of former owner Herbert Cutler Brown to lower title page. Overall an attractive set in very good condition.

THE WEST INDIES AND PANAMA MARCH AND APRIL, 1913

[Various Caribbean locations, 1913. Full brown leather, string-bound. Minor edge wear. Internally clean, with photos in excellent condition. Very good. A delightful and well-produced souvenir photograph album of a 1913 vacation cruise through the Caribbean, compiled by Mr. and Mrs. John Joseph Donovan, and presented to their daughter Geraldine Goodheart Donovan on the title leaf. In an interesting form of quasi-publication, the introduction and an explanatory text are printed and mounted opposite original photographs. In a printed note titled "Our Trip" mounted to the verso of the titlepage, the Donovans explain that "these notes and pictures of our trip to Panama, the West Indies and Caracas are prepared as a souvenir for a few personal friends and relatives." The photographs are arranged according to each location they visited, with each section beginning with a short printed commentary by them. The Donovans sailed upon the VICTORIA LUISE, a "floating hotel" from which they observed the South Atlantic and Caribbean. Captions mounted with the photos chart the journey from the moment they leave New York on March 11, 1913 to just before they head home on the train. In between, the album is filled with wonderful images of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Panama, Venezuela, Trinidad, Barbados, Martinique, and St. Thomas. Highlights of the photographs include Morro Castle and several street scenes in Havana; Caguas Church in San Juan; Nelson Monument in Kingston; a handful of shots showing completion work on the Panama Canal, namely Gatun Lake and the Culebra Cut; a view of Caracas from Columbus Monument; a shot of ten children in Trinidad labeled "Pickaninnies"; a sugar cane field in Barbados; a market scene in Fort-de-France, Martinique; and Bluebeard's Tower in St. Thomas. In addition to the photographs of the various locales, there are also several photographs showing on-deck activities including tug-of-war, a pillow fight, "Girls' Nail-Driving," and more. An attractive photographic record of a wonderful trip from New York, through the Caribbean, and back again, produced at no small expense to the travelers, evidenced by the arrangement of the photographs and the printed personalized commentary that opens each section.

320 Shoe Designs by the Dunbar Style Service.

Dunbar Pattern Co. 1913-16 - 320 high quality lithographic shoe designs all but 9 with printed collection name, date, and style number, 240 printed on embossed cream card, 35 x 27cm, and 80 printed on cream card, 21.5 x 33cm, tipped on to printed green card, 30.5 x 42cm; some occasional dusting & marking with pin holes to central upper & lower margins of approx 1/3 of designs, pencil & ink annotations to a few designs. Overall, v.g. clean & bright. All plates are loose & contained in 4 black sheepskin buttoned folders inscribed in white ?Dunbar Pattern Co. Inc. Style Service .?; all folders are somewhat worn but sound. A remarkably well preserved collection of shoe style lines by the Dunbar Style Service, part of the Dunbar Pattern Co., a footwear design and manufacturing company based in Boston but also with locations in, Brockton, St. Louis and Cincinnati. The designs, a small number of which are annotated, and approximately a third of which have been pinned up for display, are likely to have belonged to a travelling salesman working for the company and responsible for selling existing and forthcoming shoe styles. The collection includes 80 styles from the Spring and Summer Collection 1913, 47 from Fall and Winter 1913, 44 from Spring and Summer 1914, 54 from Fall and Winter 1914, 61 from Spring and Summer 1915 and 25 from Spring and Summer 1916. There are an additional 9 plates that have style numbers but are without a collection name or date. The Dunbar Style Service was the publisher of Footwear Style Trend, a trade magazine of which only volume I, number 3 (January 1913) is recorded. ?Style?, the issue begins, ?may be defined as a quality of distinction and correct style, or style in vogue, must possess a pleasing quality of distinction, otherwise it will not find favor with the public and thereby cease to be correct? As relating to footwear, style was determined by the ?style man? in the factory. ?Correct style?, it continues, ?is the supreme selling factor in the better grades of footwear; therefore the men in the factory who get up the sample line each season should be keen to correctly gauge the demands of fashion? New designs were not always assigned to a particular season, with companies often sending out sample designs to their salesmen between seasons ?thus enabling him to secure additional business with a style that is up to the minute? The 9 plates without collection names or dates are examples of such ?between season? style lines. ?It is very evident? the Footwear Style Trend concludes, ?that style value contributes largely to a successful season with both manufacturer and merchant; it is a vital element that commands the closest study of present and advance season styles - the manufacturer must be thoroughly informed regarding correct style in order that his samples possess that saleable quality - the merchant must be confident that his stock carries correct style and that his buying is a logical conclusion from his study of style conditions? In the 1910s both men and women often wore shoes up to a whole size too small for them in order to have an appearance of (supposed) better breeding and gentility. Women wore boots during the day and the court shoe with a small Louis heel in the evenings, often embellished with embroidery or metallic thread and glass or jet beading on the toes. Dunbar?s autumn and winter season designs are almost entirely made up of boots with the spring and summer seasons including a mixture of boots, pumps and sandals with more elaborate embellishments and style names including the Ladies Raglan Blucher Boot, Hesitation Pump, Patent Colt Colonial Pump, Two Button Instep Sandal, Patent Colt Four Button Oxford, The ?Boardwalk? Colonial, Sensation Sandal, &c. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Antarctic Expedition - Scott Memorial Plaque

[c.1913] - Embossed bronzed copper plaque (255 x 355 mm), in original ebonized wood frame (framed size, 367 × 455 mm). Some minor wear to the frame, with a few expert repairs, but overall in excellent condition. Wide border of laurels, twined with a wreath bearing the names of those who died on the expedition, at the corners are roundels with portraits of Scott, his wife Kathleen, and their son Peter, and the cross atop Scott's grave cairn; the border encloses a quartered panel with four scenes from the expedition, a dogsled pulling away from the Terra Nova, the Pole party man-hauling a sled, the party at the Pole, and the graves of Scott, Scott, Wilson and Bowers, a central 'boss' has a 'portrait' of Nigger, the expedition cat. Small metal label with the inscription "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" - "A sweet and fitting thing it is to die for one's country". Attractive commemorative souvenir, Scott's widow herself received a silver version of the piece. The Polar scenes are based on photographs by Bowers and Ponting that appeared in issues of the Daily Mirror - the newspaper had exclusive rights to all expedition photographs - for either 12 February, the day on which Scott's death was announced, or the "Captain Scott Number" of 21 May, 1913, which published the first images of Scott's party at the Pole.

Considérations sur les Résultats d'un Allégement Indéfini des Moteurs." In: JOURNAL DE PHYSIQUE THEORIQUE ET APPLIQUÉE, 5e série, tome III (Mars 1913).

Paris: Au Bureau du Journal de Physique, Mars 1913 - Octavo, single issue, original blue wrappers printed in black, untrimmed. Esnault-Pelterie's lecture on "considerations on the results of unlimited lightening of engines," delivered in 1912 in both St. Petersburg and Paris, was the first to demonstrate theoretically that space travel was possible; it marks the beginning of theoretical astronautics. "The lecture contains all the theoretical bases of self-propulsion, destroying the myth that rockets need atmospheric support and giving the real equation of motion. Anticipated is the use of auxiliary propulsion for guidance and complete maneuverability of rockets. Also contained are calculations of the escape velocity, the phases of a round-trip voyage to the Moon, and the times, velocities, and durations, of trips to the Moon, Mars, and Venus, as well as thermal problems related notably to the surface facing the sun . This 1912 lecture is the first purely scientific study marking the birth of astronautics. While Tsiolkovsky had the prescience and talent to first suggest, in 1903, rocket propulsion to space, REP was the first to develop the equations of the problem and to establish the mathematical theory of interplanetary flight. REP is thus the founder of theoretical astronautics" (Blosset, p. 9). As noted above, the use of rockets for space travel had been discussed by the Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935) in his 1903 paper, "Exploration of Cosmic Space by Means of Reaction Devices," as well as in an earlier paper published in 1896. However, Tsiolkovsky's work was published only in Russian and it remained almost completely unknown to Western scientists until the 1920s. Esnault-Pelterie did not know of Tsiolkovsky's rocketry work in 1912, but had become aware of it by 1930; see the historical introduction (pp. 17- 38) of his L'ASTRONAUTIQUE. Esnault-Pelterie's lecture first appeared in print in the JOURNAL DE PHYSIQUE THEORIQUE ET APPLIQUÉE, but in abridged form, due to both space considerations and the trepidation of the journal's editor, who was shocked by Esnault-Pelterie's ideas on space travel. "REP deplored the exaggerated condensation of the lecture, which was the cause for an apparent divergence between Goddard's and his own opinions concerning the possibility at the time of building vehicles capable of escaping from the earth's gravitation. In fact, Goddard wanted only to send a projectile loaded with powder to the moon and observe its arrival by telescope. REP considered the conditions necessary for transporting living beings from one celestial body to another and returning them to the earth; his more pessimistic conclusions were based on considerations of the substantial initial mass required for a rather small final mass, in view of the limited means available at the time" (Blosset, p. 9). Blosset, "Robert Esnault-Pelterie: Space pioneer," in Durant and James, First Steps toward Space (Washington DC: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1974), pp. 5-31; pp. 23-31 contain an English translation of the unabridged lecture.         Panurge. [Subtitle]: Haulte farce musicale en 3 actes de MM. Georges Spitzmüller et Maurice Boukay. [Music by Massenet].

[Printed by J. Minot] [1913], [Paris] - "Panurge, which should have been a popular farce in the lineage of Cendrillon and Don Quichotte, never achieved any success despite the usual masterly timing which Massenet deploys. The adventures and misunderstandings of Panurge and his wife Colombe make excellent operatic comedy. But perhaps the grossièreté of Rabelais is more literary than theatrical. In truth this final endearing comedy, which had to compete for attention with such novelties as Le sacre du printemps when it was first performed, has never been put to a fair test on the stage." Hugh Macdonald et al in Grove onlineA striking image of the rogue Panurge, sung by Vanni Marcoux, created for the premiere of the opera at the Théâtre de la Gaîté on April 25, 1913. "The artist Léandre (1862-1934), born in Normandy, began his career in Paris painting decorative pictures for hotels, then studied at the Beaux-Arts with Cabanel. [He] was known for his caricatures, many of which he drew for the periodical Le Rire. A street in Montmartre bears his name and a statue of him was erected in Paris after his death." Broido: French Opera Posters 42. Original lithographic poster by Charles-Lucien Léandre (1862-1934), signed and dated 1913 in the stone. 89 x 61.5 cms. (35.5" x 25"). Laid down to board. The Picture of Dorian Gray: A Play in Three Acts and a Prologue

London: Simpkin Marshall Haimlton Kent and Co. 1913 - Dramatized by G. Constant Lounsbery. First edition thus, trade issue (November 1913). Publisher's cream cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt. Very good or better, with some light toning to the spine, minor soiling to the boards, bright gilt, spine cracked and holding at the half-title, spine very lightly starting inside the rear cover, otherwise sturdy binding, some spotting to the endpapers, former owners' inscription to the front flyleaves, otherwise fresh and clean pages. A bright and presentably copy. Mason 448a. This dramatization of The Picture of Dorian Gray was first produced in London at the Vaudeville Theatre on August 28, 1913. This trade issue was preceded only by a softcover acting issue for the Vaudelville production (Mason 340). Originally published serially in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in July 1890 and in book format by Ward, Lock & Key in 1891, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a Gothic novel about the handsome Dorian Gray, who, like Faust, trades his soul for sensual pleasures. Specifically, Gray, who knows his physical beauty will fade over time, wills that his beauty never fade so that he may continue to indulge in worldly beauty indefinitely; instead of bearing the responsibility of his sins, Dorian Gray remains youthful and unblemished while his full-length portrait ages and grows increasingly ugly. Ejnar Mikkelsen was a Danish polar explorer and author who organised the Anglo-American polar expedition with Leffingwell in Alaska, in 1906-07. They lost their ship, but located the continental shelf of the Arctic Ocean by sledge. In an expedition to map out the north-east coast of Greenland and recover the bodies of Mylius-Erichsen and Lieutenant Höeg-Hagen, Mikkelsen wintered 1909-10 at Shannon Island, East Greenland. Mikkelsen's ship sank, he but completed his mission alone by a series of hazardous sledge journeys, and successfully recovered the lost records of Mylius-Erichsen and Höeg-Hagen. In the same trip, Mikkelsen disproved the existence of Peary Channel. A truly fascinating and resilient man, whose greatest tales are recounted in Lost in the Arctic.

1913-1971. A group of books from the personal collection of Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1974) one of the world's premiere fashion designers during the '20s and '30s, whose popularity once rivaled Coco Chanel. Schiaparelli pioneered numerous now-iconic fashion staples such as the divided skirt, first worn by tennis player Lili de Alvarez at Wimbledon in 1931; trompe-l'oeil detailing in knitwear; the recasting of fasteners such as zippers, buttons, and hooks as featured fashion elements; the early adoption of synthetic materials such as rayon, acrylic, and cellophane into high fashion; and her incorporation of playful, surrealist design into fashion through collaboration with friends Jean Cocteau, Leonor Fini, and Salvador Dali, with whom she created the Lobster Dress made famous by Wallis Simpson. Her interest in books was likely fostered by her father a renowned Italian scholar and dean of The University of Rome. .

London, Taylor & Francis, 1913. 8vo. Bound in one nice contemporary half calf binding with gilt leather title-label to spine. Published in "The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science", Vol. 26. No. 151-156 offered. Small repair to spine and blind stamped to lower part of title page. Front hindge a bit loose. A fine copy. The Bohr papers: pp. 1-25; pp. 476-502; pp. 857-875. [Moseley:] Pp. 1024-1034. [Entire volume: VIII, 1064 pp.+ 24 plates].. First edition of Bohr's seminal main work, which constitutes the departure from classical theories to the birth of modern atomic physics; by incorporating Planck's quantum postulate it became possible to calculate the wavelength of the hydrogen emission and thus to explain the regularity of the Balmer-lines. In 1922 Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them"."Bohr's three-part paper postulated the existence of stationary states of an atomic system whose behavior could be described using classical mechanics, while the transition of the system from one stationary state to another would represent a non-classical process accompanied by emission or absorption of one quantum of homogeneous radiation, the frequency of which was related to its energy by Planck's equation" (Norman). In his previous paper ("On the Theory of Decrease of Velocity of Moving Electrified Particles on passing through Matter") Bohr had adopted Rutherford's nuclear model of the atom, and had become convinced that it was the peripherical electrons that determined the chemical properties of an element, whereas the nucleus determine the radioactive properties. However, Rutherford's model had an apparent explanatory problem: Why were the negatively charged electrons held away from the positive nucleus? In his doctorial dissertation on the electron theory of metals, Bohr had clarified the limitations of this theory, in particular its ability to explain magnetic properties, and he had shown how this arose from the classical nature of some of its foundations. Bohr strongly expected that the key to solving this problem was to be found in some way of introducing Planck's law of quantum action. In the beginning of 1913 Bohr heard about Rydberg's remarkable discovery in spectroscopy. Rydberg's formula could represent the frequencies of the lines of the hydrogen spectrum in the simplest form in terms of two integers. As soon as Bohr saw this formula, he immediately recognized that it gave him the missing clue to the correct way to introduce Planck's law of quantum of action into the description of the atomic systems. The rest of the academic year was spent reconstructing the whole theory upon the new foundation and expounding it in a large treatise, which was immediately published as these three papers in the 'Philosophical Magazine'. It was in these papers that Bohr first gave his postulates of the orbital structure of the electrons and their quantized radiation.Bohr's atomic theory inaugurated two of the most adventurous decades in the history of science. Bohr introduced the following postulates: 1. An electron can revolve about its nucleus only in certain special circular orbits. 2. The ordinary electron revolves about its nucleus in an invariable orbit, without radiating or absorbing energy. 3. Radiation takes place when and only when the electron falls from an orbit with greater energy to one of less energy."In his great papers of 1913, Bohr presented his theory as being founded upon two postulates, whose formulation he refined in later papers. The first postulate enunciates the existence of stationary states of an atomic system, the behavior of which may be described in terms of classical mechanics; the second postulate states that the transition of the system from one stationary state to another is a nonclassical process, accompanied by the emission or absorption of one quantum of homogeneous radiation, whose frequency is connected with its energy by Planck's equation. As for the principle by which the possible stationary states are selected, Bohr was still very far from a general formulation; indeed, he was keenly aware of the necessity of extending the investigation to configurations other than the simple ones to which he had restricted himself. The search for sufficiently general quantum conditions defining the stationary states of atomic systems was going to be a major problem in the following period of development of the theory." (DSB).Also contained in the volume is Henry Moseley's famous paper "The High-Frequency Spectra of the Elements" in which he "used the method of X-ray spectroscopy devised by Braggs to calculate variations in the wave length of the rays emitted by each element. These he was able to arrange in a series according to the nuclear charge of each element. [...] It was now possible to base the periodic table on a firm foundation, and to state with confidence that the number of elements up to uranium is limited to 92."         "Considérations sur les Résultats d'un Allégement Indéfini des Moteurs." In: JOURNAL DE PHYSIQUE THEORIQUE ET APPLIQUÉE, 5e série, tome III (Mars 1913).

Paris: Au Bureau du Journal de Physique,. Mars 1913. original blue wrappers printed in black, untrimmed.. Spine panel restored, a very good copy of a very delicate work. printed on inferior wood pulp paper. Rare. (#135078). Also contained are calculations of the escape velocity, the phases of a round-trip voyage to the Moon, and the times, velocities, and durations, of trips to the Moon, Mars, and Venus, as well as thermal problems related notably to the surface facing the sun ...
