Original copperplates for In Powder and Crinoline; the image entitled "'I have had such a terrible dream,' she declared."

[London: Hodder & Stoughton,] [1913] - Four engraved copperplates, each measuring approximately 183 × 134 mm, mounted in a row, together with a full-colour pull of the image, framed and glazed. Traces of green patina where copper has slightly oxidised, else fine condition. Original copperplates made for the four-colour separation process used to produce the final image published opposite p. 100 in the book. This remarkable survival shows Nielsen's painstaking artistic technique in building up the four-colour process (Rackham used a three-colour process) to produce the rich and complex illustrations for his deluxe books.

        The Story of an Outing.

New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1913 - Octavo. Original brown buckram, matching textured paper covered boards, sand buckram tips, title gilt to the spine together with an inverted fleuron device. With the dust jacket in paper matching the boards, lettered to the spine with the binding brasses. Very slight shelf-wear, endpapers a little browned, text toned, but overall very good indeed, the jacket just a little rubbed and with some very minor chips and splits to the edges. Prize bookplate from St. Catherine's High School for Girls, St. Mary-Church, Devon, awarded in 1925, a little incongruously, to Ethel Watson for drawing. Frontispiece and 51 photographic illustrations to the text First edition. "Hunting in open country near Mt. Kenia, the author bagged a large variety of plains game including lesser kudu, gazelle, impala, wildebeest, and eland, as well as lion and buffalo. Perhaps the most exciting passage in this little volume is taken from a letter written by Hepburn's companion, H. Lloyd Folsom, detailing the dangers of a lion hunt" (Czech). Hepburn had a varied career, he had been a professor of mathematics, lawyer, superintendent of banking of the state of New York, five-term member of the New York State Assembly, and national bank examiner for New York City for three years before being appointed Comptroller of the Currency by President Benjamin Harrison. An internationally recognised authority on financial and economic questions, Hepburn returned to banking when President Cleveland took office, later becoming president of the Chase National Bank. Hepburn's party was guided by the legendary "White Hunter" R.J. Cunninghame, who had conducted Theodore Roosevelt's 1909 safari in British East Africa, the publicity for which had created a craze among well-heeled Americans for such adventures. An uncommon book, particularly so in the attractive jacket. Czech p.124 [Attributes: First Edition]

A history and description of the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope.

. London, His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1913. Folio (36.5 x 27.5 cm). cxc, 136 pp. Frontispiece with two photos, 58 [11, 16, 23, 5, 3] plates (line drawings and photos; sometimes several "plates" on one sheet), 19 text figures. Folded two-colour sheet of the plan of the observatory, and large folded diagram (i.e. map) of the geodetic triangulation of South Africa and adjacent countries. Original blue embossed cloth. Spine with gilt title.l A sumptuous volume compiled by the Scottish astronomer Sir David Gill (1843-1914) with detailed descriptions of various telescopes, and survey projects. Gill was "Her Majesty's Astronomer" and director of the observatory from 1879 to 1906. "In 1874, Gill joined the expedition to Mauritius to observe the transit of Venus. Three years later he went to Ascension Island to observe a near approach of Mars and to calculate its distance. While carrying out these laborious calculations, he was notified of his appointment to the Cape Observatory, which, over the following 27 years he was to refurbish completely, turning it into a first-rate institution. Gill was a meticulous observer and had a flair for getting the best out of his instruments. His solar parallax observations with a heliometer and his calculations of distances to the nearer stars, are testimony to his outstanding work." (Wikipedia). The two frontispiece photos show the staff in 1879, at Gill's arrival, and, with many more people, including women and non-Caucasians, in 1906. That year, Gill returned to Great Britain. The work was finished and published shortly before his death. Printed errata leaf tipped in. Small old stamp on the title page, skilful repair to the top fore-edge of the front board, otherwise a very good clean copy. Rare..

This copy may have belonged to Leroy Vernon (1878-1938) of the Chicago Daily News [neat pencil printed "L. Vernon" on verso of card stock mount]. The nascent White House Press Corps, with the President who started it all. President Woodrow Wilson is credited with establishing the first regular press conferences between reporters and the executive branch. According to the "Iron Trade Review," dated Cleveland, June 5, 1913, (p.1317), President Wilson held regular meetings with the press corps on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons, as his time permitted. "Not long ago he was asked to have his picture taken with the newspaper men. Grabbing his hat, he quickly announced his readiness and the group went out to the lawn on the south side of the White House and the picture was taken. After it was over, the president mingled and chatted with the newspaper men and seemed reluctant to return to his office and work." Personal interviews with a sitting President had only been part of the journalistic landscape for some ten or twelve years. "A little over a decade ago to see the president frequently was out of all question, and some who have occupied the highest position in the land were anything but cordial in their relations with the correspondents." By January of 1914, the journalists covering the White House had organized into an official group, "The White House Correspondents' Association." The WHCA is still active in the political life of Washington D.C. one hundred years later. Harris & Ewing's photography studio was founded in 1905 by George Harris and Martha Ewing, who located their business at 1313 F St. NW in downtown Washington, D.C. For several decades they furnished photographic images of Washington's notable political figures and activities, often supplying out-of-town newspapers with visuals to accompany their national stories.

First Edition. Rare. Moldenhauer pp. 706-7. The work was re-numbered op. 6 in 1920. "This work, composed 1909, applies the newly explored possibilities of atonal instrumental composition to the largest orchestra for which Webern ever wrote... But these immense masses of sound are hardly ever used as a whole... Like many of his early works, op. 6 was conceived in reaction to the death of Webern's mother (1906)... In 1928, Webern prepared a second version of the pieces, which... reduces the hypertrophic orchestra to standard size." Manfred Angerer, website of Universal-Edition.
