        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Wohl Berlin, 18. X. 1913. - 1 S. 4to. Briefkopf.

Buchhändlervermerk a. 1. fl.Bl.: ?[1913] First edition, large paper copy, 26 mounted coloured plates by Nielsen, 2 extra to the trade edition? (27 x 21.6 x 3.8 cm (cfr. The Metropolitan Museum of Art , online). Vgl. auch den brit. VK COPAC : Physical description: xii, [1], [14]-163, [1] p. : ill., 26 mounted col. plates (incl. front.); 32 cm. Notes: Illustrated t.-p. and lining papers. Each plate accompanied by a guard sheet with descriptive letter-press. Printed by Henry Stone and Son, Ltd., Banbury, p. [164]. Eight of the colored plates are dated ?1913? ? Contents / Inhalt : 1. Minon-Minette [nach de Caylus], 2. Felicia, or, The pot of pinks [nach d?Aulnoy], 3. The twelve dancing princesses [Andrew Lang], 4. Rosanie, or, The inconstant prince [n. de Caylus], 5. The man who never laughed [bearbeitet n. einer Version von William Morris], 6. John and the ghosts [Quiller-Couch], 7. The Czarina's violet [Francis Money-Coutts i.e. Lord Latimer]. -- NETTOGEWICHT / NET WEIGHT 2.5 kg Sprache: en [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Captain Johnston's Report of the General Scheme for the Improvement of the River Murray; together with Plans and Estimates. [Bound together with] Report on Improvements in the Vicinity of the Mouth of the River Murray, South Australia

Adelaide, R.E.E. Rogers, Government Printer, 1912 [and] 1913 - Foolscap folio, 66 pages plus a folding chart, 3 large folding plans or charts (describing a typical plan of a lock and weir, and charting the effects of certain reservoirs on navigation) and a large folding map of the Murray (555 x 910 mm, the 'section between Swan Reach and Wentworth . showing locations of lock-sites', with a very large inset map of the entire length of the river), [and] 32 pages plus a folding map ('Proposed improvements in the vicinity of the mouth of the River Murray', 537 x 518 mm). Contemporary full morocco lettered in gilt on the front cover 'Captain Johnston's River Murray Reports'; the original spine is missing and has been replaced with a fairly pedestrian piece of cloth, giving it a quarter cloth look; extremities rubbed, bumped and a little worn; title pages a little marked (with the second one a little foxed along the top margin); neat repairs to a few trifling tears to the folding plans (with a tape-stain to an old repair along one fold of the last map); slight nicks to the bottom edge of some leaves in the first paper; overall in very good condition. The ownership signature of Arthur Searcy (1913) is written in pencil on each title page. Arthur Searcy (1852-1935) was Controller of Harbors from July 1911 and Chairman of the Harbors Board Committee until his retirement at the age of 65 (information from the Searcy scrapbooks in the State Library of South Australia). He was the older brother of the more well-known Alfred (1854-1925). Loosely inserted are retained duplicate typescripts of two letters (in all, four pages foolscap) from Searcy, as Chairman of the Board, to the Minister of Marine, regarding proposed works at Victor Harbor (one page) and Goolwa (three pages). The letters are signed and dated at the head by Searcy (August and September 1922 respectively); the one on Goolwa raises numerous objections to Johnston's scheme. Three related contemporary newspaper cuttings (one printing a lengthy letter from Simpson Newland) are also present. The September 1928 ownership signature of E.H. Bakewell is written in pencil on the recto of the front flyleaf. Bakewell was managing director of the South Australian Reinforced Concrete Company, which makes sense in this context. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A fine copy. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase.William Andrew ("Willy") Pogany (born Vilmos Andreas Pogány) (August 1882 ?- 30 July 1955) was a prolific Hungarian illustrator of children's and other books. Pogany's best known works consist of illustrations of classic myths and legends done in the Art Nouveau style. He also worked as an art director on several Hollywood films, including Fashions of 1934 and Dames. The publication of Pogány's Lohengrin was the final act in his trilogy of masterworks focused on Wagner's Germanic tales, and one of the quintet that is considered his finest work. Pogány clearly approached the commission to illustrate Lohengrin as an opportunity to improve and extend techniques that he had developed through his preceding work, particularly The Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyám, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Tannhäuser and Parsifal, the other four books that immortalized his career as an illustrator. That commitment to ongoing innovation resulted in an incredible suite of illustrations, including color lithographs, monotone and marginal illustrations and the delightful tipped-in color plates (produced with a four-color process) included in Lohengrin. Themes of medieval chivalry, erotic love and moral tests are illustrated in a lavish fashion by Pogány with an outstanding use of iconography, form and color.

Collection of Two Original Photograph Views of Whitehorse, Each Titled:] Whitehorse, June 11, 1913.

1913 - 1913. Two unmounted gelatin silver prints, each ca. 19,5x25 cm (7 ¾ x 9 ¾ in). Titled and signed "E.J. Hamacher" in negative. Minor creases and tears on extremities, with minor losses, but overall very good bright photos. Two attractive panoramic views of the young growing community of Whitehorse taken by the renowned local photographer E.J. Hamacher, who was later credited for accomplishing the most comprehensive visual history of the early years of Whitehorse. The photos taken from the clay cliffs surrounding the town show the main outline of Whitehorse with the Yukon River and the wharf with the sternwheelers in the foreground, followed by the streets, the residential area and the church; distant snow-capped hills of the Coast Mountains are seen in the background. "Ephraim J. Hamacher (or E.J. As he was commonly called) was born June 10, 1857 in Kitchener, Ontario and was living in Yakima, Washington when news of the Klondike Gold Rush broke out. He moved north, and in 1898 set up a photography studio in Bennett City, B.C. In April 1900 Hamacher moved to Whitehorse, Yukon and operated a general merchandise and photographic store selling his own prints as well as photography equipment and supplies. Hamacher became known as "The Whitehorse Photographer". He was involved in many community activities including hunting, fishing, curling and playing piccolo in the town band. E.J. Hamacher died in Whitehorse on November 1, 1935" (E.J. Hamacher Collection/Yukon Archives online). "Hamacher worked in Washington and Oregon possibly as early as the 1870s (Mautz, 1997). By the summer of 1898, according to Becker, he was left in charge of Hegg's "studio" at Lake Bennett while Hegg, P.E. Larss and others carried on to Dawson. Hamacher was assisted by Florence Hartshorn" (Camera Workers: The British Columbia, Alaska & Yukon Photographic Directory online, vol. 1).

Slight shelf-wear, light scatter of foxing, else very good. Photogravure portrait frontispiece to volume I, and 170 other plates from photographs by the author, and a further 8 coloured coloured plates from his watercolours, one mounted as the frontispiece to volume II, full-page route map, and folding chart of the passage of the Arinos and Arinos-Juruena Rivers. First edition, presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the first blank of volume I; "To Sir George Lewis, Bart. with sincere regards of Henry Savage-Landor, London Oct. 3 1918." An account of Savage-Landor's hair-raising exploits in South America, from Rio de Janeiro: "he trekked inland into the Northern Mato Grosso in the company of an unruly band of porters who ditched his possessions and stole provisions whenever the opportunity arose. Several times they mutinied and demanded to be released from his employ, only to realize that alone they had no hope of finding their way home" (Howgego). Landor mapped the Rio Arinos, which he descended to the Rio Juruena, continuing to the Rio Tapajós, and entered the Amazon after a "harrowing journey" in which they were rescued from their sinking raft by a rubber planter on his annual excursion upriver. The party descended the Amazon to its mouth at Belém, then re-ascended the river to Peru, crossed the Andes to Lima, thence to Cusco and La Paz, and back to the Pacific at Antofagasta; "There he shipped to Valparaiso, crossed the Andes for the fourth time and made his way overland to Buenos Ayres. The total distance was reckoned by Landor to be 13,750 miles." Savage-Landor was one of the last explorers in the grand style; "Landor's want of training and his impatience to press on with all speed made him an unreliable surveyor, and there were those who impugned the veracity of his hair-raising escapes; but in energy and resourcefulness, in courage and power of endurance, he was the equal of any of the previous generation of great explorers. He scorned special equipment and commonly appeared on a mountain or in a jungle as he would in Bond Street. His contempt for ropes and nailed boots nearly cost him his life mountaineering on several occasions" (ODNB). A superb copy of this remarkable narrative. Howgego IV, L6 (C).
