Zu I: Erste Ausgabe von Moseleys berühmter Arbeit zur Bestimmung der Ordnungszahl der Elemente, ein Meilenstein in der Entwicklung der Atomphysik. - "Moseley, working under Rutherford an Manchester, used the method of X-ray spectroscopy devised by the Braggs to calulate variations in the wavelength of the rays emitted by each element. These he was able to arrange in a series according to the nuclear charge of each element. Thus if the nuclear charge of hydrogen is 1, in helium it is 2, in lithium 3, and so on by regular progression to uranium as 92. These figures Moseley called atomic numbers. He pointed out that they also represented a corresponding increase in extra-nuclear electrons and that it is the number and arrangement of these electrons rather than the atomic weight that determines the properties of an element. It was now possible to base the periodical table on a firm foundation, and to state with confidence that the number of elements up to uranium is limited to 92. When Moseley's table was completed, six atomic numbers had no corresponding elements; but Moseley himself was able to predict the nature of four of the missing elements"(PMM). - DSB 9, 542; PMM 407; Norman 1559. - Zu II: Erste Ausgabe dieser bedeutenden Arbeit zur Verbesserung von Rutherfords Atommodell. - "Bohr's three-part paper postulated the existence of stationary states of an atomic system whose behavior could be described using classical mechanics, while the transition of the system from one stationary state to another would represent a non-classical process accompanied by emission or absorption of one quantum of homogeneous radiation, the frequency of which was related to its energy by Planck’s equation" (Norman). - DSB 2, 239; PMM 411; Norman 258. - Vorsätze gestempelt. Einbände gering berieben. Rücken leicht fleckig. Insgesamt gut erhaltenes und nahezu fleckenfreies Exemplar [Attributes: First Edition]

IN POWDER AND CRINOLINE. Old Fairy Tales Retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch

London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1913). DE LUXE FIRST EDITION LIMITED, AND SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, KAY NIELSEN, number 11 of only 500 numbered copies. With 26 beautiful colour plates tipped onto highly decorated printed borders and behind captioned tissue-guards, decorated title-page in red and gray on gray stock, decorated headlines to every page and numerous drawings within the text by Kay Nielsen. Large 4to, in the publisher's de luxe dark green full vellum, the upper cover and spine with elaborate gilt lettering and pictorial decorations designed by Nielsen, decorated endpapers from Nielsen's designs, t.e.g., others untrimmed as issued. xii, 164 pp. + plates. A very handsome copy of this scarce issue, the green vellum very well preserved, bright and fresh with vivid gilt. The plates all very fine, the text in excellent state, the free-flies with some of the usual offsetting caused by the adhesive used under the pastedown. FIRST EDITION DE LUXE. THE SCARCE SIGNED LIMITED EDITION OF ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS OF THE GOLDEN ERA. This wonderfully produced De Luxe issue also has two colourplates that were not included in the trade issue. This was Nielsen's first book, commissioned by Hodder and Stoughton in 1911 upon Nielsen's moving to England from his native Denmark. It was published in the heady and decorative days before the First World War. It represents perhaps the peak of his illustrative powers (though some would argue in favor of "East of the Sun West of the Moon"). The illustrations were reproduced by a 4-colour process, in contrast to many of the illustrations prepared by his contemporaries that characteristically utilized a traditional 3-colour process. In the United States the book was issued under the title "The Twelve Dancing Princesses." Whichever title you prefer the book is the first of only five titles Nielsen would illustrate in total. He was lured away from book illustration by theatrical work in Copenhagen, and then later by Walt Disney. At the Disney Studios his work was used in the "Ave Maria" and "Night on Bald Mountain" sequences of Fantasia. Nielsen was renowned at the Disney studio for his concept art and he contributed artwork for many Disney films.

Perhaps the most iconic of children's rhymes are given the wonderful addition of 98 of Arthur Rackham's colour paintings and line drawings. A stunning book, and this an exceptionally beautiful copy. MOTHER GOOSE was an especially fond undertaking for Rackham, who's intent to please children with this offering was extremely successful. He chose each of the poems which would be included in the work, and featured himself in the opening initial to the first rhyme with a whimsical self-portrait. The drawing of 'the house that Jack built' was modeled from his own home in Chalcot Gardens. The colourplate 'As I was going to St. Ives' features another self-portrait, with Rackham being terrified by seven witches, black cats and vast multitude of kittens!

LOST IN THE ARCTIC: Being the Story of the 'Alabama' Expedition, 1909-1912

London: William Heinemann, 1913. First edition. With a frontispiece portrait of the author and 111 reproduced photographs on 36 plates, most double-sided, plus a large colour fold-out map. Large 8vo, original dark blue-green cloth lettered and ruled in silver on spine, the upper cover lettered and with pictorial vignette in blind. xviii, 400 pp. A very nice copy, the text solid and sound, the plates are all quite fine, the cloth is well preserved and still handsome with just a bit of expected age mellowing, very little of the usual spotting. A HANDSOME COPY. The Alabama expedition charted much of the east coast of Arctic Greenland but was far from a simple mapping voyage. Its primary purpose was to recover the journals from the ill-fated Danmarks Expedition. With a small party on a tiny ship (which would be broken down for wood) Mikkelsen set out on a grueling three year testament to the human survival instinct. He succeeded in recovering the journals while surviving many hardships, such as two winters spent in a small cottage made from salvaged timbers and planking from the Alabama before being rescued, in the direst of extremities, by a Norwegian whaler in summer 1912. This is his well written and extensively illustrated account. Interestingly, the "Alabama cottage" has survived, intact, and was photographed during a visit by Danish Navy inspection ship Ejnar Mikkelsen in September 2010.

The Conquest; The Story of a Negro Pioneer By The Pioneer

Lincoln, Neb: Woodruff Press, 1913. 1st ed. [so stated on copyright page]. Hardcover. Good. frontis (portrait), photos, 311p. Blue cloth, lettered in gilt on backstrip and front cover. 20cm. Recased (new endpapers). Some bubbling/wrinkling or cloth on back cover. Ends of joints scuffed. Extremities rubbed (with minor fraying at corners). Spine slightly sloped. Scattered marginal soiling on text-pages. As with other copies we've had, the photo listed as facing page 251 actually faces page 240. The photo listed as facing page 241 (and usually found facing page 224) is not present in this copy. An unusual copy of the first edition of his first novel. Other copies we've owned (and almost all of those we've seen described) have been lettered in white. We find no evidence in our copy that the missing photo was ever pasted in at page 224 or elsewhere. The errors in placement of photographs in the first edition have long seemed mysterious. We believe that this gold lettered binding represent the first state of the first edition and that when, for some reason (perhaps cost), the cover lettering was changed to white, the missing photo was noticed and inserted in the wrong place since another photo was already misplaced between pages 240/241). While we have no corroboration for this, it provides a reasonable explanation for the rare gilt lettering and the odd misplacement of the photos.

        Daphnis & Chloe

1913 - RAVEL, Maurice. Daphnis & Chloé. Ballet en un Acte. Fragments Symphoniques 2e Série. Lever du Jour-Pantomime-Danse Générale. Paris: Durand, (1913). Folio, original printed paper boards. $3500.Association copy of the full score of one of the two orchestral versions of Ravel’s ballet, often considered his greatest work, inscribed by noted conductor Charles Munch on the front pastedown: “En Souvenir a mon premiere concert a Denver. le 7 Nov. 48. Charles Munch.”Charles Munch (1891-1968), who has inscribed this copy, was one of the greatest conductors of his generation and a friend and colleague of Ravel. He is perhaps best known for his work on French composers, particularly Ravel: he in fact recorded Daphnis & Chloé twice, both times with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which he led from 1948 to 1962. (Those recordings are today still considered the standard against which all subsequent ones are measured.) He has inscribed this copy to conductor Antonia Brico, perhaps the most celebrated female conductor of the twentieth century. A native of the Netherlands, Brico grew up in the United States and studied conducting both here and abroad. Her talent was immediately recognized; while still in her twenties, she became a popular conductor, working with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Los Angeles and San Francisco Symphonies, and the New York Philharmonic, among others, routinely being the first woman conductor an orchestra worked with. After working in New York throughout the thirties, she settled in Denver in 1940, where she became conductor of the Denver Community Orchestra. In 1974, Judy Collins, Brico’s most famous student, made a widely seen documentary on Brico (Antonia: Portrait of a Woman) that produced many new invitations to conduct, at places such as Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. In this copy Brico has written a list of conductors, orchestras, times and places, presumably times she heard Daphnis & Chloé performed. All of the performances are in New York up to 1938; the last two listed are Ormandy with Philadelphia in Denver in 1946 and Munch with the National Orchestra de France in Denver on November 7, 1948, the date of the inscription.Front hinge starting, but interior otherwise fine. Light edgewear to original boards, a bit of discoloration to rear board. A near-fine copy with a wonderful provenance. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1913. Concluding with The Romantic Adventures of a Milkmaid. London: Macmillan and Co., 1913. 2 pp undated ads. Original dark green cloth with monogram device in gilt, with dust jacket. First Edition of this collection of (to quote Hardy's prefatory note) "for what they may be worth, a dozen minor novels" that had previously appeared only in periodicals -- between 1881 and 1900, before Hardy had forsaken fiction for verse. This was issued as Volume XVIII of "The Wessex Novels," and constitutes Hardy's last major volume of prose.~This is a bright, just-about-fine copy (a faint water-mark in the lower margin of the frontispiece); included is the very scarce dust jacket, good-to-very good (some chips including the title's "CHA" lacking from the rear panel and spine, some tape reinforcement on the back-side).         TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY ALBUM OF AUTOMOTIVE PHOTOGRAPHS.

(France) 1913. (France), (ca. 1898 - 1913). (France) (ca. 1898 - 1913). A privately compiled photo album preserving a collection of 77 original amateur photographs of early automobiles. The vehicles shown are all French and the overwhelming majority date from 1898 to 1903. The compiler has made notes for most of the photos which indicate the manufacturer and year. Manufacturers include: Panhard, Peugeot, Victoria-Combination, G. Richard, Renault, Delahaye, Decauville, Krieger, Leon Bollée, Dion-Bouton, Clément-Bayard, Ripert and Richard-Brasier. A few of the photos also note locations, including two pages of miscellaneous photos taken in Poissy, at what may have been a rally, and one identified as being in Russia. All the photos appear to have been taken by the compiler while out driving, and in a few cases there are two or three photos of the same car taken from different angles. Many of the shots are "peopled". A fascinating collection of candid images of the early French automobiliste and what he drove. Oblong 4to (26 x 33 cm) 11 ff. with 77 mounted photos measuring from 5.8 x 8.5cm to 9 x 12cm (mostly 8.5cm x 8.5cm). Contemporary printed paper covers stabbed and tied; cover edges very worn and torn; a few of the photographic images with some fading, but, generally, most are clean and clear.

        Business Cycles.

Berkeley: University of California Press,, 1913. Quarto. Library binding of dark green cloth patterned to look like leather, gilt lettered spine. Closed-tear at foot of title page, embossed Harvard Library stamp on title page recto, accession stamps on verso. A very good clean copy. First edition of Mitchell's first book on the subject for which he remains best known. This mammoth study became the acknowledged precursor and guide for cyclical and other quantitative studies in economics for years to come. Mitchell (1874-1948), a leading authority on business cycles, regarded his task as the study of "money economy" and consistently sought a dynamic theory of social change. Though other contemporaries, such as Aftalion and Spiethoff achieved similar results in business cycle theories, Blaug calls his work "unique in its breadth and continuity".

There is only a hint of foxing of foxing on a few pages, both the text and plates are bright; a clean, near fine set with all original wraps present.. Pp. un-numbered text pages + 45 full page fine heliotype plates (2 in color) of European snakes, some text-figures. Recent cloth with title in gilt (all original printed wraps bound in), lg. 4to. Fritz Steinheil died in April 1926 after the completion of part 6. The final three parts were completed by Lorenz Müller who was then Chief Curator of Zoology at the Zoologische Staatssammlung in Munich. Müller's name does appears on front wrap of the final three parts though not as a co-author. The three parts compiled by Müller are the rarest parts of this work. The print run of these final three parts was likely less than the first six parts, perhaps due to the mounting effects of the Depression. Complete sets are therefore very hard to find.
