1911 Sketches of Klondike Life Dawson [cover title]

Hardcover. Very Good. narrow oblong quarto, photograph album, containing 76 black and white snapshots, mounted on 26 black paper leaves, rectos only, bound in an elaborate and unusual fringed deerskin binding, title and border burnt into front and rear boards, in very good condition. The images depict the family life of a prosperous Dawson family, and views in Dawson, steamers and other boats on the Klondike River, and scenes of hiking and fishing in the hills and mountains around Dawson. There are a number of views of the Cascade Laundry in Dawson. We speculate that the album may have been kept by William "Billy" Johnson, the proprietor of the Cascade Laundry, a steam laundry. There are also photographs of Johnson, his wife and young child, in and around their Dawson home. William Johnson was involved in financing several fellow Klondikers who discovered new placer gold streams at Shushanna, (Chisana) Alaska at the head of Tanana River, called Discovery Creek. The claim was discovered by Fred Best, Billy James and Ed Nelson. Johnson staked James and Nelson. This discovery was heralded as a new "Eldorado" in the San Francisco Call, Volume 114, Number 51, 21 July 1913. It was the last great gold rush in Alaska and thousands of stampeders rushed into the area - but the boom was short lived. The Cascade Laundry remained in Dawson until 1942-1943, when it was dismantled and removed to Whitehorse, due to the declining economic prospects of Dawson.

        The Writing on the Ground.

London: Published for the Author,, [1913]. Single leaf folded to make four leaves. Folded for mailing, and with some minor splitting to the folds. Single authorial correction. Very good. First edition, first printing. With Crowley's signed presentation inscription, "To Edward W. Titus in sympathetic vision a relic of great days Aleister Crowley 22.1.27 E.V." Titus was the proprietor of the Black Mannequin Press which would published Crowley's translation of Baudelaire's Little Poems in Prose in 1928. Titus had a spectacular book collection which included a full set of corrected proof sheets for Joyce's Ulysses. His Crowley holdings were also remarkable. This little pamphlet prints two Crowley pieces including A Galahad in Gomorrah his 1896 review of a little book of Alfred Douglas' verse. It was considered liabelous and was omitted from reprints of this pamphlet. Rare.

        Alice Rothenstein. Original pencil drawing

ca. 1913. Very Good. English artist, Sir William Rothenstein (1872 - 1945), was highly regarded for his portraits of authors, royalty, and other famous persons. He was also an official war artist during both world wars and served as the Principal of the Royal College of Art between the wars. This is a lovely pencil drawing on paper of the artist's wife, Alice, that was done as a study for the double portrait of her and Eric Gill now at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The drawing is from the collection of the Rothensteins' daughter, Betty Holiday. The study measures 26.4 x 18.5 cm. In very good condition with slight aging to margins and a pencil smudge along the hem of Alice's dress, neither affecting the image. A few pencil marks on the verso, possibly by artist practicing pencil strokes. In an archival mat and protected by sheet of tissue paper. ORIG/071216.

Collection of Eugene Orflinger, Automobile Parts Supplier, 1913-1915 (21 items)

The 21 letters reflect the age of the vintage automobile. Several things are evident from these letters: (1) Each corporation was both aggressive but attempting to emphasize public service even when the customer (as is evident from the correspondent Mr. Dorflinger) in their eagerness to promote sales; (2) Many of these corporations were either very new or had already undergone corporate changes in their history. As an example, Stewart-Warner Speedometer Corporation (see letter of June 15, 1913) had just ended a legal battle in 1912 when they acquired the Warner Corporation and controlled their patents; (3) In this era before the assembly line, parts were produced in very small quantities ranging from a few hundred to upward of a thousand. Consequently, once the stock was over, the parts had to be manufactured anew or else a modification of the existing part.

Teil: In: Jahrbuch für Philosophie und phänomenologische Forschung. Zweiter Band. In Gemeinschaft mit M. Geiger = München, A. Pfänder = München, A. Reinach = Göttingen, M. Scheler = Berlin, herausgegeben von Edmund Husserl).

Halle, Niemeyer, 1913-16. Two 8vo volumes, both in orig. wrappers. 1st part, being offprint: in the orig. brownish wrappers. A bit of wear to upper capital and a bit of occasional brownspotting. Corners a bit bumped. Uncut. (4), 161 pp. 2nd part, being the entire issue of Jahrbuch für Philosophie ... from 1916: Orig. greyish wrappers, sunned spine. Nice and clean. Uncut. Pp. 21-478. Entire volume: VIII, 478, (2), (8, -contents list for volume 1, part 1).. The first printing, first part in offprint, of Max Scheler's great phenomenological work "Formalism in Ethics and Non-Formal Ethics of Values".Max Scheler (1874-1928), an important contemporary of Husserl, was a German phenomenological philosopher mostly known for his theories of value and philosophical anthropology. He was very inspired by Husserl and further developed his philosophical method. He was greatly admired in his time and made important contributions to his fields of philosophy. When José Ortega y Gasset called Scheler "the first man of the philosophical paradise", this expresses a notion felt my many of the important philosophers of his time. Though he did not always see eye to eye with Husserl and Heidegger, they admired him a great deal, and had it not been because of his early and sudden death, he might well have survived as one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. Heidegger actually referred to him as "the strongest philosophical power in contemporary Germany, no in contemporary Europe and even in contemporary philosophy in general" ("die stärkste philosophische Kraft im heutigen Deutschland, nein, im heutigen Europa und sogar in der gegenwärtigen Philosophie überhaupt"), and in his thoughts are represented the epitome of philosophical and cultural efforts articulated in the transition to the 20th century. In this work, which is one of his main, we are presented with the essence of Scheler's theory of value. He wishes to found an ethic in form of a theory of value, and he focuses on the feeling human nature and the individual, who feels and loves. He puts the value of the person in front of knowledge and perception and presupposes the sphere of the individual human being, denying the possibility of pure ego, pure reason or pure consciousness, thus criticizing both Husserl, Kant and German idealism. The essence of human existence cannot be accounted for by a transcendental ego, reason, will or the like, but by the human feelings with love as the centre. Scheler links human feelings to experiences of value and divides these into five ranks that can be felt by all human beings. These values are independent of the things they are felt with, though there is always a certain order, and this order is thoroughly investigated

In Memoriam. Miss Emily Wilding Davison, B.A.

folded 8vo. brochure (19 x 13 cms), (4)pp., incorporating an oval photograph of Miss Davison set within a laurel wreath border, all four pages lined in black. Folded as issued and a fine, fresh, copy. As a martyr to the cause, Emily Wilding Davison (1872-1913) holds a permanent place in the history of the suffragette movement, and therefore in the story of women's liberation. Davison had joined the WSPU in 1906 and soon became a highly active member, contributing numerous articles and reviews to the suffragette newspaper, Votes for Women, until December 1911. "However, in keeping with her consistent rejection of authority, she soon fell out of favour with the WSPU leadership over her independent and unauthorized programme of militant actions. Davison notably hid in the House of Commons three times, including in April 1911 when she spent the night in a cupboard near the crypt chapel in order to avoid participating in the census. She was imprisoned eight times, for offences including obstruction, assault, stone-throwing, breaking windows, and setting fire to pillar boxes, during which she went on hunger strikes, suffered solitary confinement and force feeding, barricaded herself in her cell, had a hosepipe turned on her, and attempted suicide as a protest against the mistreatment of her fellow suffragette prisoners. ...... Among Emily Davison's close friends were Rose Lamartine Yates, Elinor Penn-Gaskell, Edith Mansell-Moullin, and Mary Leigh?all prominent and active members of the suffrage movement. Sylvia Pankhurst, in The Suffragette Movement (1931), describes her as 'tall and slender, with unusually long arms, a small narrow head and red hair. Her illusive, whimsical green eyes and thin, half-smiling mouth, bore often the mocking expression of the Mona Lisa' (Crawford, The women's suffrage movement, 160). She never married and had no children. On 22 June 1912, after throwing herself onto a staircase at Holloway prison, Emily Davison told the medical officer that she had done so because she felt 'that a tragedy was wanted' (Hansard 5C, 25 June 1912, 216). However, she is usually remembered as the 'suffragette martyr' for her last protest at the Epsom Derby in June 1913. As the horses rounded Tattenham Corner she ducked under the railing and ran out onto the course in front of the king's horse, Anmer, which struck her with its chest and knocked her down. Among the articles found in her possession were two WSPU flags, a racecard, and a return train ticket to Victoria. She remained unconscious for four days and died on 8 June 1913 at Epsom Cottage Hospital as a result of a fracture to the base of the skull. The coroner recorded a verdict of death 'due to misadventure'. It is not known whether she intended to commit suicide. Queen Mary's first thought was for 'poor Jones', the jockey, and she referred to Davison as 'the horrid woman' (Pope-Hennessy, [Queen Mary, 1867-1953], 467). A public funeral was held in London on 14 June 1913. Emily Davison's body was taken from Epsom and escorted, by a large and spectacular procession, from Victoria to St George's Church, Bloomsbury, where a memorial service was held, and afterwards to King's Cross where the body was entrained for Northumberland for burial at the parish church of St Mary's, Morpeth, on 15 June." [Vera De Campli San Vito in ODNB]. The present brochure is a flattering posthumous eulogy to Emily Davison. It comprises a portrait and brief biographical note (on p.1), a long essay (on p.2) headed Why did she stop the King's Horse?, A petition to the King (on p.3), and a programme note (on p.4) about the memorial service. Davison's death was, of course, a gift for the suffragette movement and was milked for all it was worth. "The yielding up a life is the highest and most eloquent proof of love for others that human beings have it in their power to give - only the very strongest and most urgent reasons can call for such a sacrifice. Had Miss Davison such strong and urgent reasons? Yes, for deep down in her heart burned the knowledge of the intolerable wrongs from which women are suffering".

4to., recently finely bound in half dark blue morocco, lettered in gilt on spine. A fine copy. Limited edition of 440 numbered copies , handsomely printed by the Riverside Press. The annual reading of President George Washington?s 1796 Farewell Address has become a tradition in the American Senate. In his letter to ?Friends and Citizens,? Washington warned that the forces of geographical sectionalism, political factionalism, and interference by foreign powers in the nation's domestic affairs threatened the stability of the Republic. He urged Americans to subordinate sectional jealousies to common national interests.

        Diary and Photograph Album.

Photograph album 10.5 x 10.5 inches, brown cloth boards with nut and bolt binding; 52 stiff leaves of pasted-in b&w photographs alternating with leaves of typecript; a little rubbing to binder, browning to text leaves, very good. This anonymous diary - we only know that the author was called 'Sam' - records a trip to Europe by three young men from New York. Perhaps the most interesting part of the diary from an historical point of view covers the first fourteen days, when the friends were aboard RMS Carpathia, the ship which had, the previous year, led the attempts to rescue the survivors of the Titanic. Captain Arthur Rostron, who was heavily praised and decorated for his part in the rescue, continued in command of the Carpathia until sometime in 1913 and so may have been aboard the ship at this time. On 13 July the ship sailed to the rescue of another vessel whose engine had broken down; the diarist makes little comment, and so one wonders if he even knew of the Carpathia's dramatic recent history. His main concerns are girls, games and good dinners, and this part of the diary contains fascinating descriptions and photographs of life on board a steam liner, including a shuffle-board tournament, a 'cock fight' (in which two bound men have to push each other out of a chalk circle), a needle threading contest and fancy dress parties. He also records the living conditions of a low-fare passenger : "Our stateroom is very unsatisfactory, being a small room with four berths, no wardrobe... Only two at a time can dress not very confortably at that. Room is very hot, and stuffy". The rest of the diary concerns the friends' grand tour around Europe, passing through the great sights of Italy, France and Holland and ending up in London, where the author has a very unsatisfactory meal and a rather peculiar moustache trim. They embarked for home on 27th August on the Oceanic which, being "far inferior" to the Carpathia, attracts less attentive description. An excellent contemporary source for information on the daily events and lifestyle on board ocean liners in their heyday.

In recent half blue/grey morocco, with colour illustrated cloth from original boards. Top edge green, others untrimmed. A near-fine copy of a scarce book. London-born Arthur Rackham was one of the leading artists during the golden age of Edwardian gift books. In 1905 his illustrated 'Rip van Winkle' introduced him to the US public. One year later 'Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens' was published. Rackham was made a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908, and was honoured abroad, with gold medals from Milan (1906) and Barcelona (1911). His illustrations for many classics followed including Alice In Wonderland (1907), Gulliver's Travels (1909), Aesop's Fables (1912), A Christmas Carol (1915), King Arthur (1917) Cinderella (1919), Sleepy Hollow (1928), The Night Before Christmas (1931), Hans Andersen (1932), Pied Pier of Hamelin (1934) and Poe's Tales (1935).
