Hodder and Stoughton. London 1912 - First edition, UK. Slim 8vo. 34pp. Portrait frontis. of Dickens with tissue guard. Bowden House, Harrow stamp to front paste-down. Beige paper covered boards with brown cloth spine, sl. wear to extremities, occasional light foxing o/w VG+. Presentation copy from the author to the library of Bowden House, in Harrow. She writes on the front free endpaper, "I was the child and this my first journey outside my little New England village. It chanced that I met . on the way . Kate Douglas Wiggin" and beneath, "To Bowden House Library. From the author, a happy patient, 1923." This is a particularly moving and unique presentation copy as it was here that Wiggin died, after contracting bronchial pneumonia. During the spring of 1923 Kate Wiggin travelled to England as a New York delegate to the Dickens Fellowship Conference. She became ill and died, at the age of 66, in Harrow. At her request, her ashes were brought home to Maine and scattered over the Saco River. This is possibly the last book that the author of 'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm' signed. Bowden House is still a health facility on Harrow Hill but now helps patients with psychiatric problems and addictions. In March 1868 eleven year old Kate Douglas Smith met her literary hero Charles Dickens on a train while travelling between Portland, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts. He was on a second reading tour of America. At fifty-six he was nearing the end of his life. His novels and this meeting were to have a profound effect on Kate's life. The direct literary results of Thoreau’s stay at Walden Pond were the essay “Resistance to Civil Government” (1849), inspired by a night in the Concord jail (the result of not having paid his taxes as a protest against government policies) and early drafts of A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849) and Walden (1854). After A Week failed to sell, Thoreau began revising Walden, taking it through seven major drafts before finally publishing it seven years later to modest sales and mostly favorable reviews. Two more trips to the Maine Woods (1853 and 1857) and several excursions to Cape Cod (1849, 1855, and 1857). provided fodder for the essays collected into two posthumous books, The Maine Woods (1864) and Cape Cod (1865). Clifton Johnson an important literary figure with some 125 published books and countless magazine and newspaper articles to his credit. A friend of William Dean Howells and John Burroughs, he was an acquaintance of many other late 19th and early 20th century authors and editors. Helen of Troy and Other Poems [Signed Association Copy]

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1912. First edition, second printing. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, second printing in the Publisher's original paper-covered boards (corners rubbed and worn, former presumed bookplate removed from front pastedown), lacking the (presumed) rare dust jacket, BEING A PRESENTATION COPY FROM SARA TEASDALE TO JOHN REED signed and inscribed on the front free endpaper as follows: "For Mr. Reed / from / Sara Teasdale / March 1913." later owned by LENNOX ROBINSON, the Irish poet, dramatist, and theatrical producer, and SIGNED BY LENNOX ROBINSON on the second front free endpaper. John Reed (1887-1920) was an American journalist, poet, and social activist, critical in the founding of America's Communist Labor Party, and best known for his first-hand account of the Bolshevik Revolution, "Ten Days that Shook the World", a revolution he fully supported and hoped to bring to America. He died in 1920 and, being an important person in Revolutionary Russia, was buried in a hero's funeral at the Kremlin Wall Necropolis, a site where pro-Bolshevik victims of the October Revolution were buried in mass graves. The site, next to Lenin's mausoleum, was, following the mass burials of the Revolution, reserved for the burial of politicians and other notables. (Suslov, Stalin, Kalinin, Dzerzhinsky, Brezhnev, and Yuri Andropov, all are interred at the site.) A Very Good copy with a wonderful provenance, SIGNED BY SARA TEASDALE TO JOHN REED AND SIGNED BY LENNOX ROBINSON.

Les formes élémentaires de la vie religieuse. Le système totémique en Australie. Avec une carte hors texte.

Paris, Félix Alcan, 1912. 8vo. Completely uncut and unopened, in the fragile original printed green wrappers. Remains of a paper label to front wrapper, otherwise an exceptionally fine, clean, and fresh copy. Light minor brownspotting due to the quality of the paper. Housed in a custom-made green cloth box with gilt red laetaher title-label to spine. (4), 647 pp + folded map + publisher's catalogue (38, (2) pp).. Scarce first edition - especially in this condition - of what is generally regarded as Durkheim's magnum opus, his groundbreaking study of totemism among the Australian aborigines, which led him to the foundational conclusion that religion is social, that the primary purpose of religion is to bind people together. Showing that society is the soul of religion, that society is the foundation of all religious belief, and that religion is what allows for a society to express its social unity "The Elementary forms of religious Life" furthermore explains the enduring relevance of religion throughout history. In this milestone work of sociology, Durkheim sets out to discover the enduring source of human social identity. To that aim, he investigates totemism among the Australian Aborigines, acknowledging that all religion has its origin in totemism. Totems are collective symbols that represent both a god and society. The collective thought, of which totemism is an early expression, is the basis of all religious thought and as such also of philosophy and modern science. The work came to have a profound effect on not only sociology and religion, but also on philosophy, psychology, and history of science, documenting how collective thought, through totemism and religious expression, enabled mankind to enter into a world of concepts and correspondence and to identity causes and relations. All philosophy and science ultimately rests on this collective thought, which allowed mankind to enter into a conceptual realm. "The Elementary Forms has been applauded and debated by sociologists, anthropologists, ethnographers, philosophers, and theologians, and continues to speak to new generations about the intriguing origin and nature of religion and society." (from the English langiuage translation)."The general conclusion of the book which the reader has before him is that religion is something eminently social. Religious representations are collective representations which express collective realities; the rites are a manner of acting which take rise in the midst of assembled groups and which are destined to excite, maintain, or recreate certain mental states in these groups. So if the categories are of religious origin, they ought to participate in this nature common to all religious facts; they should be social affairs and the product of collective thought. At least -- for in the actual condition of our knowledge of these matters, one should be careful to avoid all radical and exclusive statements -- it is allowable to suppose that they are rich in social elements." (From "The Elementary forms of religious Life")
