        Blumenstilleben.

        SOME REMINISCENCES

1912. [to Reggie & Maisie Gibbon] London: Eveleigh Nash, 1912. 2 pp undated ads. Original dark blue cloth. First Edition of this autobiographical work, which initially appeared serially in Ford Madox Ford's newly-founded "English Review."~What is remarkable about Conrad's reminiscences is how clearly he employed fictional techniques worked out with Ford,... wherein the narrative intensity increases as the story develops. To achieve that, Conrad used a constantly interrupted narrative as a way of unsettling conventional sequences and, thereby, established anticipation of the next episode. Conrad needed a method that permitted intimacy, up to a certain point, and then withdrawal, when he had revealed enough... so his reminiscences would be matters of attack and retreat. [Karl]~SOME REMINISCENCES is generally believed to have slightly preceded the American edition -- which, as with subsequent English editions, was titled A PERSONAL RECORD. Wise claimed that only 1,000 copies were printed (apparently including some bound by Bell as the colonial issue), but Nash records have not survived to substantiate this.~This copy is in fine, bright condition (discreet bookplate of the remarkable Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger). Cagle A15b.1. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.~This is an inscribed presentation copy from Conrad, with the following in his hand on the front free endpaper: "To | Maisie and Reggie | from their affectionate | J.C. | 1912". Perceval "Reggie" Gibbon (1879-1926) was, like Conrad, a former seaman who had become a writer; both used J.B. Pinker as an agent, which may be how they first met. When Conrad suffered his nervous breakdown in early 1910 (as he was completing UNDER WESTERN EYES), it was Gibbon who came to the rescue: Jessie Conrad later wrote of those months, "If it had not been for Perceval Gibbon who came often and always, it seemed, in the nick of time, I feel sure I would not have held out" [quoted in Karl p. 680]. Gibbon dedicated his Margaret Harding to the Conrads in 1911, and a few years later Conrad would reciprocate by dedicating VICTORY to Gibbon and his wife Maisie. Conrad and "Reggie" had a rather intense flurry of correspondence during the 'Teens, but most of it was lost during the Great War so not a lot is known about their friendship. At one point the two men considered collaborating on a play based on both men's early seafaring experiences in Africa (as in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness"). Toward the end of the war, Gibbon was a war correspondent with the Italian Army for The New York Times, and after the war he became a major in the British Royal Marines. As veteran Conrad collectors know, the most intimate inscriptions Conrad wrote were those he signed merely "J.C.

        Elementary Principles of Economics

New York: The Macmillan Company,, 1912. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, buff endpapers. Spine darkened, edges rubbed, tips worn, front free endpaper slightly abraded from erasure of inscription, marginal toning, joints starting. First "published" edition of Fisher's textbook of economics, preceded by two "trial" editions, one in 1910 under the title of Introduction to Economic Science, the other in 1911 under the same title as this one. "The experimental editions, of which there were two, were made possible by special arrangement with the publishers. This gave opportunity for thorough trial for two years in classrooms at Yale ... The present - the third and final - edition is the first to be offered to the general public" (Preface). "Fisher was the consummate pedagogical expositor, always clear as crystal. He hardly ever wrote for fellow experts. His mission was to educate and persuade the world. He took the trouble to lead the uninitiated through difficult material in easy stages. Whenever he was teaching or tutoring students, he wrote handbooks or texts for their benefit - in mathematics and science when he was still a student himself, in the principles of economics when he was the professor responsible for the introductory course. Fisher's economics text was published in 1910 and 1911. Its graceful exposition of sophisticated theoretical material will impress a modern connoisseur" (Tobin in The New Palgrave 2, p. 370).

Paris, Librairie Fischbacher, S.A. printed by Auguste Weisbrod, Francfort, 1912.REPRINT 1912 (dated on lower cover), small 4to, 263 x 208 mm, 10¼ x 8¼, French text, red cloth spine, buff boards with hand coloured repeat of title page, publisher's adverts to lower board. Hand coloured title illustration (repeating illustration on page 1 of the original except that centre illustration at lower edge of Gaspard seated at the table is replaced by the publisher's imprint). 24 pages of hand coloured illustrations. This Struwwelpeter is notable for having a huge mass of straight hair hanging down to his ankles. Edges of covers just very slightly darkened, slightest wear to corners, contents exceptionally clean and bright. Near Fine excellent copy of a title scarce in any edition. French version of Struwwelpeter following the original illustrations quite closely. First published in 1860, Fischbacher was still publishing this version in 1929 (see BNF). The early French editions stated that it was translated from the German of Dr Hoffmann, but for obvious reasons from 1872 onwards this this information was dropped. Not in Baumgartner. The illustration of Pierre on page 2 is very close to the second design made by Hoffmann in 1858 (for image of Pierre see Bilderwelt page 238, but this shows the 1929 cover which is quite different from our copy).         A Negro Explorer At The North Pole. With a Foreword by Robert E. Peary, and an Introduction by Booker T. Washington

New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1912. New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1912. First Edition. An unusually fine copy. Henson (1866-1955) became Peary?s valet on a canal survey trip to Nicaragua in 1887-1888, and accompanied Peary on trips to the arctic in 1891. He became indispensable to Peary on these expeditions, particularly for his resourcefulness in equipment handling. It took Peary and Henson eighteen years of Arctic expeditions to gather the expertise to reach the Pole, and return. On an 1891 expedition they proved that Greenland was an island. On April 6, 1909, Peary, Henson and four Inuit made it to the North Pole; with Henson planting the American flag. It took the expedition five months to return and send the message by cable, ?Stars and Stripes nailed to the North Pole -- Peary.? Dr. Frederick Cook claimed to have reached the Pole earlier, but a commission of the National Geographic Society credited Peary, a process that became necessary once again in the 1980s when an astronomer charged that Peary missed the mark, not an unlikely scenario in the days before radio and GPS receivers. In 1989 the National Geographic Society once again endorsed the claim of Peary?s expedition, but this is a controversy that is not likely to ever completely disappear. When Peary and Henson returned from the North Pole many were unable to accept this black man as a hero.
