        Beatrisa

S.-Peterburg Tipografiia „Iakor’“ 1912 - Very rare first edition of the libretto to Davidov’s opera, by the dance critic Valerian Svetlov after Maurice Maeterlinck’s play Sœur Béatrice. The premiere took place in June 1912, at the railway station in Pavlovsk, just outside St Petersburg, as a fundraiser for the orphans of workers on the Moscow–Vindava (i.e. Ventspils, Latvia) Railway. The young soprano Maria Brian (1886–1965) took the title role, which she reprised for the work’s next performance, in St Petersburg, in 1914. Davidov (1867–1940) was a founder member, and later chairman of the St Petersburg Music Society in the 1890s. Although he wrote two operas, and other works, music was not to be his career: he was the head of the Commercial Bank of St Petersburg (1909–17) and a member of the board of the stock exchange, fleeing Russia after the Revolution for Berlin, where he spent the rest of his life. Bernandt, p. 35. Not found in WorldCat, which lists a sole copy of Bessel’s 1914 libretto (National Library of Australia). Small 8vo (174 × 108 mm), pp. 32; stamp of the music publisher Vasily Bessel (who published the piano score of the opera) to p. [4] (blank); light toning due to paper stock; original printed wrappers, light marginal browning, small chip at head. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        A CALENDAR OF VERSE

Privately printed, [London 1912 - Just 20 Copies Printed, this Copy Inscribed by the Compiler to the Printer. 225 x 155 mm (8 3/4 x 6"). [48] leaves, printed on recto only. ONE OF 20 COPIES. Excellent full vellum over boards by Riviere & Son (stamp-signed on front turn-in), compiler's gilt coat of arms on each cover and at foot of spine, flat spine with gilt titling, densely gilt turn-ins, ivory moiré silk endleaves, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. In a fleece-lined blue cloth slipcase. Engraved frontispiece with monograms of Humphries and his wife surrounded by putti and other symbols of love, engraved coat of arms on title. Front flyleaf with ink inscription from the author to William Maxwell, master printer at R. & R. Clark, where this volume was printed. A little foxing to front flyleaves, otherwise AN EXTREMELY PLEASING COPY, the binding unworn, and entirely clean, fresh, and bright inside and out. This is a lovely little collection of love poems--one for each month of the year--by Donne, Wither, Keats, Tennyson, and others, compiled and arranged by antiquarian Sydney Humphries (1862-1941) in honor of his wife, Mary Elizabeth, and then distributed to friends. Humphries also contributed two poems of his own. The binding, paper stock, and press work are all of very high quality. Our copy was presented by Humphries to printer William Maxwell, with this inscription, dated 9 October 1912: "To my friend William Maxwell with sincere appreciation and acknowledgment of his share in making this booklet what I believe it to be, a gem in its way, and as perfect as humanly possible." With a limitation of just 20 copies, the work is unsurprisingly rare, with no copies recorded at auction in ABPC back to 1975 or in Rare Book Hub this century. OCLC locates just four institutional copies, none in America. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        SOME REMINISCENCES

1912. London: Eveleigh Nash, 1912. 2 pp undated ads. Original dark blue cloth. First Edition of this autobiographical work, which initially appeared serially in Ford Madox Ford's newly-founded "English Review."~What is remarkable about Conrad's reminiscences is how clearly he employed fictional techniques worked out with Ford,... wherein the narrative intensity increases as the story develops. To achieve that, Conrad used a constantly interrupted narrative as a way of unsettling conventional sequences and, thereby, established anticipation of the next episode. Conrad needed a method that permitted intimacy, up to a certain point, and then withdrawal, when he had revealed enough... so his reminiscences would be matters of attack and retreat. [Karl]~SOME REMINISCENCES is generally believed to have slightly preceded the American edition -- which, as with subsequent English editions, was titled A PERSONAL RECORD. Wise claimed that only 1,000 copies were printed (apparently including some bound by Bell as the colonial issue), but Nash records have not survived to substantiate this.~This copy is in fine, bright condition (rear endpaper slightly cracked). Provenance: bookplate of noted civil rights lawyer Arthur B. Spingarn; the bookplate was designed by the Art Deco artist Ruth Reeves, and bears her name. Cagle A15b.1. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

München 7 VIII 1912 - Gr.-8°. 3 Seiten. Doppelblatt.

Fine large original photograph signed "Enrico Caruso" and inscribed to the prominent Moravian soprano Maria Jeritza

      - "The winning quality of the sound, the tender mezza voce (particularly in the early years), and his phrasing, based on a rare mastery of legato and portamento, enabled Caruso to sing the French and Italian lyric repertory as well as lighter operas. In addition, his noble, incisive declamation, his broad, generous phrasing, and his vigor in dramatic outbursts made him a notable interpreter of Verdi as well as of French grand opéra. In this repertory his performances were characterized by the irresistible erotic appeal of his timbre allied to a temperament as warm and vehement as his voice. His numerous recordings, now faithfully remastered on CD, not only made him universally famous, they also did much to encourage the acceptance of recording as a medium for opera." Rodolfo Celletti and Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online.Maria Jeritza was one of the greatest sopranos of her generation, celebrated for her singing as well as for her acting, which included acrobatic elements. World famous composers wrote roles specifically with her in mind. For Richard Strauss, she created Ariadne (both versions, 1912 and 1916) and the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten (1919). Puccini wrote Turandot for her; she performed it, but she did not create the role. Other roles in which Jeritza excelled were Salome and Jen fa. She gave her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1921 as Marietta in Korngold's Die tote Stadt and appeared on the Met's stage no fewer than 290 times in 20 roles. Full-length role portrait of the famed tenor as the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto by A. Bert, Paris, ca. 210 x 134 mm. Signed and inscribed in black ink at lower portion "À Madame Jeritza – la belle Marie. Sincerement Enrico Caruso Wien 1919." Laid down to original ivory mount (ca. 350 x 260 mm.) with photographer's name embossed at lower right.Slightly worn, soiled and foxed, slightly heavier to mount; date somewhat smudged with final digit altered; two small tears to upper edge of mount.         GRAND CANYON OF ARIZONA FROM HERMIT RIM ROAD

New York, 1912. In fine condition. This majestic print is the largest and most dramatic of Thomas Moran's printed works. It was published by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad in 1912, after the original oil commissioned for (and still owned by) the line. It shows a tremendous sweep of the scenery of the Grand Canyon from the Hermit Rim, with the bright colors of the Canyon shown dramatically against the turbulent sky. Thomas Moran, famous for his superb landscapes of the West, first painted the Grand Canyon in 1873 when he painted his "Chasm of the Colorado," which he sold to Congress the following year. In 1892 he visited the Canyon as a guest of the Santa Fe Railroad, whose line now brought tourists within easy reach, and painted a large canvas for the line in return for a free trip. The Santa Fe Railroad completed a spur line to the rim in 1901, and consistently sponsored "artist's excursions" there from 1901 to 1912, as well as purchasing paintings to serve as a basis for promotional efforts. In 1912 the railroad capped twenty years of association with Moran by commissioning this picture and producing this large chromolithograph. Almost all copies of this Moran print were soon distributed by the Santa Fe Railroad as a promotional gift. Few of these have survived, generally being badly framed, usually without glass, and displayed in poor conditions. A small number remained in the archives of the railroad, and so have retained their untrimmed and pristine state. The present copy is one of these, a fine copy of Moran's most striking printed image.

Irish Rebels in English Prisons. [Author's Autographed / Signed Edition]

New York: P.J.Kennedy and Sons. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. . New York, P.J.Kennedy and Sons, no year [c. 1912]. 8°. Portrait-Frontispiece showing "O'Donovan Rossa in Prison Dress" and an additional page with a portrait of O'Donovan Rossa which is signed by him. Pagination: XIV, VII, 442 pages. Original Hardcover with gilt lettering on spine and cover. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa (10 September 1831 ?- 29 June 1915) was an Irish Fenian leader and prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. His life as an Irish Fenian is well documented but he is perhaps known best in death for the graveside oration given at his funeral by Pádraig Pearse. Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa was born Jeremiah O'Donovan at Rosscarbery, County Cork, to Denis O'Donovan and Nellie O'Driscoll, a family of tenant farmers. According to the eminent scholar John O'Donovan, with whom Rossa corresponded, Rossa's ancestors belonged to the obscure but ancient sliocht of the MacEnesles or Clan Aneslis O'Donovans. His ancestors had held letters patent in Kilmeen parish in the 17th century before the confiscations, with his agnomen "Rossa" coming from the townland of Rossmore in Kilmeen. So Jeremiah adopted the surname, Rossa. Rossa became a shopkeeper in Skibbereen, where, in 1856, he established the Phoenix National and Literary Society, the aim of which was "the liberation of Ireland by force of arms", This organisation would later merge with the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), founded two years later in Dublin. In December 1858, he was arrested and jailed without trial until July 1859. In 1865, he was charged with plotting a Fenian rising in 1865, put on trial for high treason and sentenced to penal servitude for life due to his previous convictions. He served his time in Pentonville, Portland and Chatham prisons in England. Rossa was a defiant prisoner, manacled for 35 straight days for throwing a chamber pot at the prison's warden and thrown into solitary confinement on a bread-and-water diet for three days for refusing to take off his cap in front of the prison's doctor. For most of his time in prison Rossa was denied the right of correspondence with his associates in the outside world for his violation of prison rules. In an 1869 by-election, he was returned to the British House of Commons for the Tipperary constituency, in which he defeated the Liberal Catholic Denis Caulfield Heron by 1054 to 898 votes. The election was declared invalid because Rossa was an imprisoned felon. After giving an understanding that he would not return to Ireland, in effect his exile, O'Donovan Rossa was released as part of the Fenian Amnesty of 1870. Boarding the S.S. Cuba, he left for the United States with his friend John Devoy and three other exiles. Together they were dubbed "The Cuba Five". O'Donovan Rossa took up residence in New York City, where he joined Clan na Gael and the Fenian Brotherhood. Rossa additionally established his own newspaper dedicated to the cause of Irish national liberation from British rule, The United Irishman. In it Rossa advocated the terroristic use of dynamite bombs as a means of overthrowing the British occupation. His paper was used to raise a so-called "resources for civilisation fund," presumably for the purchase of dynamite and other armaments for the Irish struggle. Rossa organised the first ever bombings by Irish republicans of English cities in what was called the "dynamite campaign". The campaign lasted through the 1880s and made him infamous in Britain. The British government demanded his extradition from America, but without success. In 1885, Rossa was shot outside his office near Broadway by an Englishwoman, Yseult Dudley, but his wounds were not life-threatening. The British government claimed she was mentally unstable, and not acting on its behalf, although Rossa's supporters and even many of his detractors found this hard to believe. More likely, she was incensed at the fund he organised (the so-called "Skirmishing Fund") which was intended to support the arming of those who would fight the British. Rossa was allowed to visit Ireland in 1894, and again in 1904. On the latter visit, he was made a "Freeman of the City of Cork." O'Donovan Rossa was married three times and had eighteen children. On 6 June 1853, he married Nora (Nanno) Eager of Skibbereen, who bore him four sons. She died in 1860. In 1861 he married Ellen Buckley of Castlehaven. They had one son (Timothy Francis). She died in July 1863. In November 1864 he married, for the third time, to Mary Jane (Molly) Irwin of Clonakilty. They had thirteen children. Rossa was seriously ill in his later years, and was finally confined to a hospital bed in St. Vincent's Hospital, Staten Island, where he died at the age of 83. The new republican movement in Ireland was quick to realise the propaganda value of the old Fenian's death, and Tom Clarke cabled to John Devoy the message: "Send his body home at once". His body was returned to Ireland for burial and a hero's welcome. The funeral at Glasnevin Cemetery on 1 August 1915 was a huge affair, garnering substantial publicity for the Irish Volunteers and the IRB at time when a rebellion (later to emerge as the Easter Rising) was being actively planned. The graveside oration, given by Pádraig Pearse, remains one of the most famous speeches of the Irish independence movement stirring his audience to a call to arms. It ended with the lines: "They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but, the fools, the fools, the fools! — They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace." His grave was renovated in 1990 by the National Graves Association.
