THE STONEGROUND GHOST TALES COMPILED FROM THE RECOLLECTIONS OF THE REVEREND ROLAND BATCHEL, VICAR OF THE PARISH

      W. Heffer & Sons Ltd., Cambridge 1912 - Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-187 [188: printer's imprint], original pictorial blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. A collection of nine ghost stories dedicated to Swain's longtime friend M. R. James. ". Swain's tales share many features with those of James' and draw on the friends' common interests and antiquarian studies. They are however rather milder in tone and regularly incorporate a playful humour not often found in James' work. The tales relate the adventures of a fictionalized version of the author, Mr Batchel, Rector of Stoneground parish. Although by today's standards, readers may find Swain's stories rather lacking in supernatural horrors, their subtle qualities become apparent on re-reading, and many find Mr Batchel one of the most enduring creations of English ghost fiction." - Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 468.

TIRAGE UNIQUE A 300 EXEMPLAIRES. The painter and lithographer Ludovic Alleaume was born in Angers (Maine-et-Loire); for some reason a mistaken belief that he was born in Russia has taken root on the internet. Alleaume was a pupil of Ernest Hébert and Luc-Olivier Merson at the Beaux-Arts, Paris. He exhibited with the Salon des Artistes Français from 1883 to 1938. From 1894 Ludovic Alleaume also exhibited with the Société des Peintres-lithographes. In 1890 he travelled to Palestine, making many sketches on which he relied in his subsequent Biblical paintings. Alleaume also painted portraits and landscapes, and painted murals in churches. In style, Alleaume remained faithful to the academic tradition, unaffected by new movements in art subsequent to the Barbizon School.         Nature's Harmonic Unity ****** The rare first edition on symmetry in Nature and classical art and architecture, greatly enriched with two extensively annotated Samuel Colman drawings in matching frames. ******

G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York and London, first edition, finely printed from type by the Knickerbocker Press, New York 1912 - OFFERING: The rare first edition on symmetry in Nature and classical art and architecture, greatly enriched with two extensively annotated Samuel Colman drawings in matching frames that illustrate fundamental aspects of symmetry explained in the book. The mixed media color drawings on crystalline geometry, and the golden ratio and Egyptian triangle, respectively are unsigned and undated, likely executed ca. 1910. PROVENANCE: From the estate of Caroline Lexow Babcock [1882-1980], the distinguished women's rights and peace advocate. SAMUEL COLMAN [1832-1920]: painted two iconic paintings of the Hudson River School and with Louis Comfort Tiffany, Lockwood de Forest, and Candace Wheeler, established the design firm, Tiffany & Associated Artists. Among their collaborations are the 1881 interior design for Samuel Clemens' house in Hartford and the 1882 redecoration of the White House for President Chester A. Arthur. By the early 1900s, Colman was preoccupied with his research and writing on aesthetics and he withdrew from commissioned work. DRAWING I: "Congealed Vapor, or Snowflakes. Illustrating the Power of the Dodecahedron over Beauty." Condition: Fine. A pen & graphite drawing of snow crystals with five examples done in light blue, golden brown and black on a mounted sheet with underlying geometric figures and measurements around peripheries, title in pen & ink, and four lines of explanation at the foot in pencil with a pen & ink cross-out, angle replaced with form. Size: Mounted Sheet (to mat margins): 163 x 143 mm / Mat Margins (to frame): 49 mm / Frame: 303 x 271 mm. The drawing isn't reproduced in the book, which contains an extensive study of snow crystal patterns. For related examples, see snow crystal illustrations in Chapter VII on Crystallography, pp. 75-89. DRAWING II: "A Design for a Church Window on the Angles of the Egyptian Triangle of 51 Degrees 30" and 58 Degrees." Condition: Near Fine, a few, scattered, light margin spots. A watercolor, ink and graphite drawing of a stained glass church window with arch, done in blue, green, purple, yellow, black, gray and brown on a mounted sheet with underlying geometric figures + an additional mount for the apex of the arch, with measurements in margins, penned label below the drawing, title in pen & ink at the foot. Size: Mounted Sheet (to mat margins) + apex of arch: 212 x 148 mm / Mat Margins (to frame): 57 mm / Frame: 382 x 308 mm. The drawing isn't reproduced in the book.

Zanichelli, Bologna, 1912. 2 v. (XIX 471 110 p. [33] c. di tav. [20] c. di tav. ) 27 cm m. perg.

Sguardie decorate. Circa 200 immagini fotografiche in b.n. intercalate n.t. e 33 tavv. fotografiche f.t. Yakushi, F71a. Neate, F - 26. Italiano

Illustrated edition - the pictures apparently have been taken from an English edition of the time. 20 chapters from David Copperfield was printed in Tbilisi in Armenian. Dickens in Armenian language first started to appear in 1880s-1890s, the first edition of this novel was printed in 1897 in Tbilisi. This is the first illustrated edition of this book. Rare. WorldCat locates one copy (Michigan). The National Library of Armenia doesn't have this edition.

Kuhnert is considered one of the most important German animal painters of his time. As he was not a professional hunter, it often took a great deal of effort to track down his subjects.
