        The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries

London: Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press, 1911. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. 552 pp. First edition of the first book published by Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz (1878-1965) who is best remembered for his studies on Tibetan Buddhism and the subsequent publication of "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" in 1927. Of German -Irish descent, Evans-Wentz studied religion, philosophy and history at Stanford University and was deeply influenced by visitors such as W.B. Yeats (who is one of the two dedicatees in this book). He then attended Oxford and studied Celtic Mythology and Folklore, performing ethnographic fieldwork collecting fairy folklore in Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall, Brittany, and the Isle of Man. In 1911 Evans-Wentz published his degree thesis as this book which has gone through numerous reprintings, at least as recently as 1977. ***DESCRIPTION: Fully bound in evergreen ribbed cloth, gilt vignette to the front with various symbols contained within a wheel, including a shamrock, thistle and the Welsh dragon; the spine has a gilt vignette of the rising sun within Stonehenge and gilt lettering; top edge gilt; the front pastedown has the private library stamp of the Sufi temple from whom we acquired the book; frontispiece a vintage photograph of the stones of Carnac in 1909, title page in red and black, nine-page Index at the rear; octavo size (just over 8.5" tall), pagination: (i)-xxviii, (1)-524. ***CONDITION: The book is now near fine; when acquired it had several condition issues which we had addressed by a professional restorer (name available upon request). The volume has a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, and the interior is clean and bright; the gilt design on the front cover was bright and unrubbed when we acquired the book and remains lovely; the gilt on the spine was nearly as bright, alas, there was a chip at the head of the spine which our restorer replaced to protect the text block, but the very top edge of the first word ("The") of the title on the spine was lost. Remaining condition issues are a few stray marks to the binding and some private library markings (stamped and hand-written) on the front and rear pastedowns, and one number on the front free endpaper (please see pictures and request more if needed); one can also just see where the necessary restoration work was done to the spine, joints, and edges. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.

Book on the Horse. Handbook for each Horse-Master, Breeder, Horse Owner and Horse Lover].

Russkoe knizhnoe tovarischestvo "Deiatel" S.-Peterburg 1911 - Octavo (26 x 17.5 cm). VIII pp., including half title and title, 744, VIII pp., with 8 plates; 642, XXII pp., with 8 plates and 1 double page table, with multiple illustrations in text; marginal brown spotting to some pages, occasional inscriptions and underlines in pencil, corner of pp. 223-224 in vol 1 torn affecting text. Original publisher's half calf over marbled boards, gilt lettering to flat spines; slightly rubbed, corners bumped, each vol. of slightly different colour. One of the most influential pre-revolutionary Russian horse books, here in its third edition, revised and enlarged. Count Sergey Urusov (1854–1915), a recognized specialist and an honorary Chairman of the Russian Society of Horse Breeding, spent more than a quarter of a century researching Russian horse breeds and establishing the treatments and conditions required for the successful breeding. Surprisingly, there was hardly any substantial scientific literature in the Russian language available on the subject, which led Urusov to a decision to produce the present work. His initial idea was to simply translate a popular German work titled "Das Buch vom Pferde" by Carl Wrangel, which provided information on all the aspects of horse care, breeding and racing. As he progressed with his work, Urusov started to realize that German text was not be fully applicable in the conditions of Russian climate, local soil and infrastructure. The Urusov's work proved to be extremely successful and useful exactly because the author applied his experience and knowledge and adapted the text to the local conditions and specificity of the Russian breeds.         Paul Klee - Catalogue raisonné Alle 9 Bänder zum Sondersparpreis

NEUBUCH!!!

The text of this book is based on John Edward Taylor's translation from 1847. ***ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Giambattista Basile (1566-1632) was an Italian poet, courtier, and fairy tale collector. The earliest form of this work was published in 1634 and 1636 under a pseudonym, by his sister, in two volume. It languished and then received attention when praised by the Brothers Grimm as the first "national" collection of fairy tales, and contains the earliest known versions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Rapunzel. His collection of stories became known as the Pentamerone because it was loosely modeled after the Decamerone of Boccaccio. ***ABOUT THE EDITOR: Edward Fairbrother Strange worked at the Victoria and Albert Museum and was the author of numerous works on art and illustration, as well as contributing articles to the famous 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. ***ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR: Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was an illustrator specializing in Japanese and Indian themes; his interest in Japanese style is evident in his work, and had an affect on later illustrators including Virginia Frances Sterrett. Wells's The War of the Worlds. ***DESCRIPTION: Deluxe binding of white vellum with gilt decoration on front, gilt lettering on front and spine, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, yellow ties, plain endpapers, title page in red and black.         Camera Work 36: "The Steerage"

New York: Alfred Stieglitz, 1911. THE COMPLETE ISSUE OF CAMERA WORK 36, INCLUDING THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE ICONIC IMAGE THE STEERAGE, ALONG WITH 15 OTHER PHOTOGRAVURES BY STIEGLITZ.A REMARKABLE ASSOCIATION COPY: MAX WEBER'S COPY, WITH HIS OWNERSHIP SIGNATURE. IT WAS WEBER WHOM STIEGLITZ CREDITED WITH "DISCOVERING" THE STEERAGE. "Alfred Stieglitz was a major force in the promotion and elevation of photography as a fine art in America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Steerage is considered Stieglitz's signature work, and was proclaimed by the artist and illustrated in histories of the medium as his first 'modernist' photograph. It marks Stieglitz's transition away from painterly prints of Symbolist subjects to a more straightforward depiction of quotidian life."The Steerage began its life as a masterpiece four years after its creation, with Stieglitz's publication of it in a 1911 issue of Camera Work devoted exclusively to his photographs in the 'new' style, together with a Cubist drawing by Picasso. Stieglitz loved to recount how the great painter had praised the collage-like dispersal of forms and shifting depths of The Steerage. Canonized retroactively, the photograph allowed Stieglitz to put his chosen medium on par with the experimental European painting and sculpture he imported and exhibited so presciently at his gallery" (Metropolitan Museum of Art).Although Stieglitz took the photograph in 1907, it was so radical that even he failed to immediately recognize its significance. It "is entirely reasonable--and no discredit to Stieglitz--that others probably had to intervene in his understanding of the picture before he could really grasp it--that the picture's conception came, as it were, after its birth. According to Edward Steichen, in 1911 the painter Max Weber brought The Steerage to Stieglitz's attention as a Cubistic accomplishment, and only Pablo Picasso's admiration for the picture--and his praise of Stieglitz as 'the only one who has understood photography'--allowed Stieglitz to see the picture in the formalist terms he narrates" (Francisco, The Steerage and Alfred Stieglitz, 2012).Stieglitz himself credits Weber as one of the few people whom he showed the proofs to who "truly saw the picture" and Weber's approval (along with the approval of the artists Haviland and de Zayas) gave him the confidence to publish it. "When it appeared in Camera Work," Stieglitz later wrote, "it created a stir whenever seen... I said one day, 'If all my photographs were lost and I'd be represented by just one, The Steerage, I'd be satisfied'" (ibid).More on the relationship between Max Weber and Stieglitz:"Because Stieglitz's knowledge and understanding of modern art, especially European art, was initially limited... he relied heavily, during the early years of 291's new incarnation, on his closest advisers to recommend artists and to make contact with them and their dealers in Europe... [He] sought advice from... the Russian-born American Cubist painter Max Weber... Weber greatly influenced Stieglitz's understanding of European modernism. The artist's knowledge of modern art derived from his years in Paris (1905-9), where he had studied with Matisse, visited Picasso's studio and absorbed his Cubist style, attended Gertrude Stein's salon, and befriended the modern primitive painter Henri Rousseau. Back in New York, Weber was introduced to Stieglitz (through Steichen) and, for a while, gave art lessons to the dealer's young daughter, wrote for Camera Work, and even lived at the gallery, where he worked as an assistant... [Their] close association ended suddenly and acrimoniously in 1911, when they argued about the pricing of Weber's first (and only) one-man show at 291... Years later, probably in the 1930s, the two men made peace and acknowledged the importance of their early collaboration" (Dabrowski, Stieglitz and His Artists).Camera Work 36 would have been a particularly important issue for Weber, for, along with The Steerage which he championed, it contains an announcement and numerous reviews of his seminal one-man show in January 1911 at Stieglitz's 291 gallery. The other Stieglitz photographs in the issue are: The City of Ambition (1910), The City Across the River (1910), The Ferry Boat (1910), The Mauretania (1910), Lower Manhattan (1910), Old and New New York (1910), The Aeroplane (1910), A Dirigible (1910), The Steerage (1907), Excavating, New York (1911), The Swimming Lesson (1906), The Pool - Deal (1910), The Hand of Man (1902), In the New York Central Yards (1903), The Terminal (1892), Spring Showers, New York (1903).New York: Alfred Stieglitz, 1911. Quarto (9" x 12", 23cm x 35cm), original grey wrappers; custom box by noted book designer Sjoerd Hofstra. Lacking front free endpaper (blank). Wrappers with chips at edges. Back in New York, Weber was introduced to Stieglitz (through Steichen) and, for a while, gave art lessons to the dealer's young daughter, wrote for Camera Work, and even lived at the gallery, where he worked as an assistant… [Their] close association ended suddenly and acrimoniously in 1911, when they argued about the pricing of Weber's first (and only) one-man show at 291… Years later, probably in the 1930s, the two men made peace and acknowledged the importance of their early collaboration" (Dabrowski, Stieglitz and His Artists). Camera Work 36 would have been a particularly important issue for Weber, for, along with The Steerage which he championed, it contains an announcement and numerous reviews of his seminal one-man show in January 1911 at Stieglitz's 291 gallery. The other Stieglitz photographs in the issue are: The City of Ambition (1910), The City Across the River (1910), The Ferry Boat (1910), The Mauretania (1910), Lower Manhattan (1910), Old and New New York (1910), The Aeroplane (1910), A Dirigible (1910), The Steerage (1907), Excavating, New York (1911), The Swimming Lesson (1906), The Pool - Deal (1910), The Hand of Man (1902), In the New York Central Yards (1903), The Terminal (1892), Spring Showers, New York (1903). New York: Alfred Stieglitz, 1911. Quarto (9" x 12", 23cm x 35cm), original grey wrappers; custom box by noted book designer Sjoerd Hofstra. Lacking front free endpaper (blank). Wrappers with chips at edges. Spine perished with early reinforcement at board edges near spine. Plates in fine condition, with The Steerage remarkably fresh. AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT VOLUMES IN THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY.

        The Day's Play

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1911. Octavo. Original red cloth, title and decorations to spine and front cover gilt. Spine faded, marks and rubbing to front cover. A very good copy. Third edition (a year after the first), inscribed by the author to his future wife, Dorothy de Sélincourt, on the occasion of their engagement, on the front free endpaper, "To my Dorothy — with the author's heart. January 23rd, 1913". With Dorothy's illustrated bookplate to the front pastedown. The two first met in January 1913 while buying ski boots — coincidentally they were headed for the same slopes in Switzerland, Diablerets, and were both staying at the same hotel, the Grand. After a brief courtship, they announced their engagement that same month, and were married six months later. This copy is one of two books that Milne presented to Dorothy on the day he returned to London from Switzerland, the other being a copy of The Holiday Round. This work is the first of Milne's four volumes containing a collection of his contributions to Punch. The book was well-received, and was in its third edition just four months after publication, and in its fourth when his second collection, The Holiday Round, was published the following year.

Pagination: unpaginated [38 pp.] which were beautifully printed at the Chiswick Press on fine paper. June 1911" (in an unknown hand). This binding may be related to catalogue entry 582 in Marianne Tidcombe's THE DOVES BINDERY, which mentions two copies of pattern numbered 742, and being bound as "the covers are tooled with a small corner design of rose leaves," but we are unsure this fully relates to our copy so therefore inconclusive.
