        SONGS OF INNOCENCE

[London], ca. 1911-12. This is a magnificent volume--bejewelled and spectacular on the outside, and full of artistry and immense charm on the inside. Francis Sangorski (1875-1912) and George Sutcliffe (1878-1943) had learned the craft of binding from Douglas Cockerell before founding their own bindery in 1901. As early as 1905, Sangorski & Sutcliffe began to specialize in custom-made jewelled bindings incorporating elaborately gilt and inlaid designs, and the bindery reached its zenith in the first dozen years of the 20th century, when their most gorgeous jewelled bindings were produced. An intense rivalry between Riviere and Sangorski developed, and the two firms began putting out intricately decorated bindings described by Nixon as having as their main aim the putting of "so much gold and color on the cover that the hue of the original leather could no longer be determined." It seems apparent that our binding came from that period. Ratcliffe estimates that of these special bindings "no more than 300 were ever produced," and given the labor-intensive process required to produce a binding like the present one, this small number is not surprising. Many of these bindings enclosed exquisite illuminated manuscripts done by Francis' older brother Alberto (1862-1932), who had started his professional life as secretary to a goldsmith's firm, became attracted to the book arts at the age of 43, and embarked on a career as a calligrapher and illuminator. At some point around 1910-11, there was a falling out between the Sangorski brothers, and Alberto took his talents to Riviere, leaving some unfinished work behind. It seems likely that this manuscript was one such project. In the opinion of Sangorski & Sutcliffe expert Stephen Ratcliffe, the present work is something of a hybrid: the illuminated initials and borders are clearly by Alberto, the script less definitely so, while the miniatures are not in his style and were probably done by Sutcliffe. Given the prevalence of glimmering illumination here, the text is fittingly from the first illuminated book of poems produced by William Blake (1757-1827). According to DNB, the 1789 "Songs of Innocence" "express Blake's ideal of a unified sensibility incarnate in children." Day calls them an "imaginative picture of the state of innocence" and a reflection of Romanticism's fascination with childhood and belief in a "primitive condition of human perfection." Not surprisingly, children figure prominently in the sweet miniatures, which show joyful tykes dancing a jig, boys and girls racing about with their dog, and a frightened little boy reunited with his mother by God the Father attired in a white robe. There are at least a small number of Sangorski bindings that are in some way more dazzling than ours (one such is the "Great Omar," said to be the grandest English binding made in the 20th century, now sleeping with the fishes in the ruins of the Titanic); however, it is next to impossible to imagine a production as beautiful and at the same time as delightfully endearing as the present one.. 260 x 182 mm. (10 1/4 x 7 1/8"). 25 pp., [1] leaf (colophon), written in black and red in a lovely hand. SPLENDID CORNFLOWER BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO, LAVISHLY GILT, INLAID, AND BEJEWELLED, BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE (stamp-signed on front doublure), covers with wide frames of gilt and inlaid floral vines, in red and green morocco, surrounding a sunken central panel, that on upper cover with an intricate inlaid strapwork design in blue, green, and brown morocco on a densely stippled and incised gilt ground, the design accented by jewels including a large cabochon garnet at center, and smaller carnelians, amethysts, and turquoise, panel on lower covers with central quatrefoil in green and brown morocco with turquoise flower at center, surrounded by leafy gilt vines bearing turquoise berries; raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with gilt vines, two brick red morocco labels; HANDSOME DOUBLURES OF IVORY MOROCCO, framed by blue morocco inlaid with black and brown, center panel at front with inlaid and gilt ribboned wreath enclosing Blake's name and dates, above an inlaid lyre surrounded by gilt and inlaid flowers, blue silk endleaves, all edges gilt (tiny patch of gilt refreshed on upper cover). In the original (slightly scuffed) green morocco box, padded and lined with velvet. TITLE PAGE WITH gilt lettering and large opening initial set into an illuminated floral half border and with A MINIATURE OF A TROUBADOUR KNEELING BEFORE A PUTTO, 11 OTHER MINIATURES OF FACES, SCENES, OR LANDSCAPES INCORPORATED INTO ILLUMINATED BORDERS, 15 LARGE INITIALS IN COLORS AND GOLD, six of these extending into partial borders, smaller initials in gold with penwork tracery. Original tissue guards. According to the colophon, "This copy of The Songs of Innocence has been written out and illuminated by F. Sangorski and G. Sutcliffe of London for The Grolier Society and will not be duplicated." Not in Ratcliffe. Two small stones more opaque than the others (and so perhaps replacements?), one initial and one border with a little flaking to paint and gold, revealing the gesso underneath, otherwise A VERY FINE SPECIMEN, the vellum creamy and bright, the illuminations with rich colors and shining gold, and the breathtaking binding unworn and shimmering. Manuscript China Letter Book, Contemporary to the Chinese Revolution, Made By by a German Imperial Navy Engineer.

China, 1911-1912, 1911. Tsingtao [Qingdao], Hong Kong, Amoy [Xiamen], Wusung [Shanghai], Chefoo [Yantai], Yokohama, Hakodate, Port Arthur, 1911-1912. Journal of manuscript retained copies of letters and diary notes made by German naval engineer H.L.A. Heine while serving onboard Scharnhorst, during and after the Chinese Revolution, with a few hand sketched diagrams within the text. Together with two pencil drawings of nautical scenes inscribed by the artists and measuring approximately 14,5 x 10 cm, and one black and white photograph of a group of German Navy officers perhaps including Heine himself, the photograph measuring approximately 11 x 8 cm. Qto. Approximately 390 pages in manuscript, written in ink single sided onto thin tissue leafs, a scant few integral blanks. Text is almost entirely in German. Volume measures approximately 22,5 x 27 cm, blue cloth boards titled in English and Chinese to front "Foreign Letters: The Terminus Stores. Kowloon." Spine reinforced with tape, a red wax seal cemented to rear board, otherwise in very good condition, internally clean and bright. SMS Scharnhorst was an armored cruiser of the Imperial German Navy, the lead ship of her class, assigned to the German East Asia Squadron based in Tsingtao in 1909. After arriving, she replaced the cruiser Fürst Bismarck as the squadron flagship, a position she would hold for the rest of her career. Over the next five years, she went on several tours of various Asian ports to show the flag for Germany. She frequently carried the squadron commanders to meet with Asian heads of state and was present in Japan for the coronation of the Taisho Emperor 30 July 1912. Attached to the China Station of the German Navy and spending some two years at this post, Hans Ludwig Adolf Heine, 'marine ingenieur, SMS Scharnhorst,' wrote several letters, to family and friends, and also to notable business firms. All of the correspondences are dated, with location also given. Several of the letters were written at Tsingtao, being the ship's base port in China. To demonstrate German presence in the Far East, also to augment political and trade relations, frequent tours were made along the coast of China to the Japanese islands. Surely, he would have observed some fascinating communities and situations. For example, he was in Port Arthur [now called Lüshunkou District] on 5 September 1911 only six years after the siege which took place during the Russo-Japanese War. Yokohama was also a port of call later the same month. In December 1911 he is in Hakodate, Japan. He was also in Japan after the death of Emperor Meiji the Great, when his successor Emperor Taisho was given the throne. At least one voyage in 1912 was made as far as Vladivostok in Russia, during which an eight-page letter was penned and contains references to the Russian city, as well as Peking, and torpedo boats in Tientsin [Tianjin]. From January to May 1912 he wrote from Wusung or while anchored off the Wusung Küste [coast]. At the time, Wusung was a separate small port town; it has since become a sub-district of Baoshan in northern Shanghai.. Manuscript.

(INSCRIBED BY SPALDING) America's National Game: Historic Facts Concerning the Beginning Evolution, Development and Popularity of Base Ball, with Personal Reminiscences of Its Vicissitudes, Its Victories and Its Votaries

New York: American Sports Publishing, 1911. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, inscribed by Spalding on the front flyleaf "To John Heydler/with my compliments/A.G. Spalding/New York/Oct. 15. 1911." (apparently publication date as the only signed copies we have seen are dated either Oct. 11 or Dec 25. 1911) Publisher's gilt stamped blue cloth. 7 3/4 x 5 1/8 inches (20 x 13.5 cm); 542 pp., portrait frontispiece, photographically illustrated including foor folding photographic plates all of which are present and intact. The binding rubbed (though the front cover gilt lettereing and Uncle Sam design are bright, the spine lettering somewhat less so) and somewhat bowed from a former dampstain which affects the page edges and has left a tideline around much of the text at the front and rear of the volume, the endpapers, including the inscribed leaf, are spotted and with some blue marks from the cloth at edges, these leaves nearly sprung, the rear hinge strengthened and the endpaper detached. Spalding's important reminiscences of the early days of baseball, inscribed to fellow baseball pioneer John Heydler, who had been a National League Umpire (1895-97), a sportswriter, Secretary to the National League President (from 1903), and the National League's Secretary-Treasurer at the time of this presentation (1907-18); he was briefly NL President in 1909 after Harry Pulliam's suicide and again assumed the President's postion from 1918 to 1934. The classic early work on baseball, authored by one of the sports' founding fathers and founder of America's first sporting goods empire. A.G. Spalding was one of the game's earliest professional stars, pitching for Rockford, Boston and Chicago in the 1860s and 70s. He gave up active play when he and his brother launched the sporting goods company that bore their names and, in the 1880s, became the most powerful magnate in the game. This work is filled with history and anecdotes as well as photos still to be found nowhere else. Spalding devotes a large section to flag-waving and "proving" the Doubleday myth which expounds that baseball was a totally American invention which sprang full-blown from the mind of the later-day general in 1839 at Cooperstown.

Milan: Direzione del Movimento Futurista, [1911]. Single sheet folded once to make [4]pp. Soft horizontal fold to middle with a few tiny spots of loss to the rear, else a very good example of this early Futurist manifesto, the first on music. Though not as nihilistic as Russolo's Art of Noises published three years later, he still makes what at the time, were revolutionary demands that musicians break from the traditional, proclaiming in a later manifesto that" the new order of disorder should be created by destroying the ancient schemes."         Les Choses vues par Georges Lepape.

Paris Maquet 1911 - 4to (33.5 x 30.5 cm). No. 146 from deluxe run of 300 copies (of total edition of 1000), with three plates on papier des manufactures impériales du Japon. Title, limitation page with monograms of Poiret and Lepape, 11 colour pochoir lithographs (1 folding) highlighted in gold; upper blank loose. Publisher's illustrated card boards, housed in elaborate black and red exotic hardwood box with white shark leather inlay by Antonio Perez-Noriega, pupil of Jean de Gonets; very slightly rubbed, small restoration to joints and back. Loosely inserted 2 pp. manuscript letter from Max Knaake to Poiret dated 2 March 1915. One of 300 deluxe copies in an extraordinary slip case by a pupil of Jean de Gonets. Presented by Poiret to the German art director and filmmaker Max Knaake, the book was later sent back to the former for safe keeping during the turbulent war years. Fine association copy. 'Très rare.' (Carteret) These magnificent plates present designs by Paul Poiret (1879 – 1944), one of the most influential and notorious designers of the early XX century. His gowns followed the natural line of a slim, uncorseted body, although many women still had to resort to longline corsets to achieve the same effect. Compared to the elaborately detailed and constructed gowns that many fashion designers produced, his designs were audaciously simple and bold, and sometimes quite far-sighted. For example, his robe de minute, a gown made of two rectangles of fabric, was created in 1911, ten years before near-identically constructed chemise dresses became widespread. The models' heads are simply wrapped in colourful turbans, in contrast to the elaborately arranged coiffures that many fashionable women favoured. The inscription, by Poiret, reads: 'à M. Max Knaake Berlinois mais qui mériterait d'être Parisien' [To Max Knaake, who is from Berlin but deserves to be a Parisian.] The book is accompanied by a manuscript letter sent by Knaake to Poiret at the beginning of the First World War. Written in almost perfect French on 2 March 1915, the letter is a testament to the deep friendship between the two. In it, Knaake reflects on his collaboration with Poiret in Cologne, where he was involved in the designer's first exhibition in 1914, and the events that led to his current circumstances; Knaake was in France when the war broke out, but managed to escape to Corsica, where he stayed in a convent under official scrutiny and with strict limitations placed on his communications with the external world. In the second part of the letter Knaake politely asks Poiret to keep the book safe until the situation changes, as it is very dear to him, particularly because of the designer's presentation inscription. He expresses deep gratitude for Poiret's help and friendship and finishes: 'The world is big and art has no Motherland.' Carteret IV, 322; Colas 1837; Monod 9205; Lipperheide Fc 67.         Behind Turkish Lattices. The Story of a Turkish Woman's Life.

      - Philadelphia, Lippincott, 1911. 8vo. Original green cloth, lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, illustrated in white and gilt; pp. ix, 179, frontispiece and numerous plates after photographs; minimal rubbing to cloth, text a little brown-spotted, otherwise very good. First edition of a scarce and important title. 'Hester Donaldson Jenkins (1869-1941), a professor at the American College for Girls in Constantinople from 1900-1909, wrote enthusiastically about the Young Turks, who in 1908 established a constitutional monarchy in the Ottoman Empire. They seemed to Jenkins to promise new freedoms for Ottoman women. In this book Jenkins uses her own observations of Constantinople, her students, and their families to construct an account of a typical Turkish Muslim womans life cycle at this turning point in Ottoman history. She intends her comments on childhood, education, marriage, polygamy, and divorce to correct Western misapprehensions and she notes how Ottoman women selectively adopted Western customs, such as European clothing, and increasingly practiced monogamy. Jenkins' corrective is only partial, however, for she describes Turkish women as childishly charming but sadly ignorant and in need of the uplifting influences of Western education. In its confidence in the bright prospects of American influence and Ottoman reform, this book captures an optimistic moment in which social progress seemed to prevail against the looming social and ethnic divisions of the Balkan and First World Wars' (blurb from a modern re-edition). Tennessee Williams (* 26. März 1911 in Columbus, Bundesstaat Mississippi - + 25. "Foreign Letters - The Terminus Stores" - Kowloon

Kowloon." SMS Scharnhorst was an armored cruiser of the Imperial German Navy, the lead ship of her class, assigned to the German East Asia Squadron based in Tsingtao in 1909. At the time, Wusung was a separate small port town; it has since become a sub-district of Baoshan in northern Shanghai. Details of Chinese custom, geography and climate, events of the time, as well as his observations of the people's way of life, fill the pages addressed to his personal acquaintances. Towards the end of the volume, he describes the great Tian Shan mountain range, presented with a simple drawing. In a couple of instances he seems to be recording expenses for ship repairs, including the keel. Some letters contain numeric figures or prices. One lists places such as Sumatra, Celebes, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Japan, which may be the locations where he was trading. A letter to the firm Wolf & Co. of Hamburg was penned at Amoy. At Tsingtao 2.5.1911, he transcribes eight letters which he wrote to various German businessmen and manufacturing firms, including Speidel et Cie. and others in Saigon, Singapore, and Shanghai. [F. W. Speidel was a famous German in Ho Chi Minh City during the early 1900s. His company, Speidel et Cie, was one of the biggest German businesses in the city, trading oil lamps, oil, and providing services ranging from rice milling, to imports, exports, shipping and marine insurance. Founded by German investor Theodore Speidel in 1868, it was one of the first foreign companies opened in Vietnam.] Evidently, Heine was bilingual. At least two letters are in English, one written at Chefoo 2 December 1911, as follows, "Dear Annie, Your card reached me at Tsingtao... A year ago you wrote to me that John was in New Zealand... I have been out here now a year, one more year and I shall go home." Heine returned Germany, by way of Siberia in 1912. He settled in Bremen, continuing work in his specialized field as an engineer, but also became an importer/exporter of goods, quite possibly having made some excellent business connections whilst abroad.
