A decided break with the usual narritive style of 19th century illustration is seen in the asymmetrical pages. The flatness, simplification, and linear quality create a tense and expressive mood, forecasting the Art Noveau style" (Eleanor M. Garvey, The Artist and the Book, 1961, S. 59). - Gelenke minimal berieben, kl. goldgepr. Leder-Exlibris "Aleramo Spada-Lavini", sehr gutes Exemplar im dekorativen Meistereinband. Hellbrauner handgeb.         Peter and Wendy

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1911 Illustrated by Francis Donkin Bedford. First edition, first printing. Publisher's decorative olive green cloth designed by Bedford, with an illustration of Peter with mermaids and crocodiles within a vine frame to front board in gilt, illustration of Peter looking down on Captain Hook to the spine in gilt, lettered in gilt. Near fine, with a hint of rubbing to the extremities, bright spine, fresh gilt, some light offsetting to the free endpapers, minor spotting to the page edges, otherwise fresh and clean interior. Overall, a very bright and striking copy, seldom found in this condition. Peter and Wendy is the popular story of a mischievous young boy who refuses to grow up and spends his days flying and adventuring with his troop of Lost Boys on the island of Neverland. Peter Pan made his debut in Barrie's 1902 novel The Little White Bird, but his best-known appearances are as the title characters in Barrie's 1904 play Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (published 1928), the 1906 novel after the play Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and this 1911 novel Peter and Wendy. Notably, this edition contains the final chapter "When Wendy Grew Up," which tells of Wendy's return to Neverland as an adult with a child of her own. Today, this story is generally referred to by the shortened title Peter Pan.. Illus. by Beford, Francis Donkin. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

        Navajo, The

Crystal, Navajo Reservation, New Mexico: Moore, J. B.. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1911. First Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. Tan pamphlet with black and red design on front wrapper. Light soiling to wrappers; back bottom corner shows bent corner. Interior is exceptionally clean for this issue. This copy has no markings inside; the ink in the color plates has not smeared or run as if often the case. Staple binding is tight. John Bradford Moore arrived on the Navajo Reservation at Narbona Pass in 1896 and bought the seasonal trading post operation currently existing. He soon built a permanent building and named it the Crystal Trading Post. He hired young Navajo weavers, supplying them with locally sheared wool, which had been cleaned and carded back east. He also created numerous designs which his weavers would master, quickly weaving many rugs of the same designs. Crystal designs are often seen on the auction market today. Some historians also credit Moore with what we know as the Two Grey Hills design. He published two catalogs, in 1903 and 1911 which gave a short history of the Navajo rugs and why his rugs were superior. This 1911 catalog (we've never handled the 1903 catalog) includes 15 color plates and 1 black and white plate of rugs plus numerous photographs of weavers and the country in and around the Crystal Trading Post, supplied by Simeon Schwemberger. While fairly commonly seen in facsimile, original copies of this item are rarely seen, especially in this condition. ; Oblong Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 32 pp .

New York Department Store Pioneer B. Altman pays William Waldorf Astor $18,750!

New York, New York, January 31, 1911. 6.5" x 2.75". "Partly Printed Check Signed ""Benjamin Altman,"" 6.5"" x 2.75"". New York, January 31, 1911. Drawn on the Astor Trust Company ""Safe Deposit Vaults,"" completed in manuscript, made payable to ""W.W. Astor"" for $18,750. Endorsed on verso ""W.W. Astor"" beneath stamping: ""Pay Astor Trust Company, / or Order / William Waldorf Astor."" One tiny bank cancellation hole on ""n"" of ""Benjamin."" Fine condition. The Astor Trust Company was a financial institution at 5th Avenue and 36th Street headed by John Jacob Astor IV, William Waldorf Astor's cousin. Benjamin Altman was a director and a stockholder in the Astor Trust Company. After Altman acquired property owned by W.W. Astor in 1910 on a long lease, he owned outright more than half of the block bordered by Fifth and Madison Avenues, between 34th and 35th Streets. What he did not own was held on long leases from Astor. This check most probably was payment for property leased by Altman from Astor.Benjamin Altman (1840-1913) founded the department store and chain, B. Altman & Co. in New York City in 1865. Altman's flagship store was on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, across Fifth Avenue from the homes of brothers William B. Astor, Jr. (1829-1892) and John Jacob Astor III (1822-1890). When John Jacob Astor III died in 1890, William Waldorf Astor (1848-1919) inherited his father's share of the Astor holdings and, titularly, became the head of the Astor family. He tore down his father's house and replaced it with the Waldorf Hotel. The 13-story hotel was specifically designed to overshadow Mrs. Astor's mansion, which was right next door, in an attempt to overshadow her status with it.In 1891, William Waldorf Astor moved with his family to England, became an English subject in 1899, and was created Baron Astor in 1916 and Viscount Astor in 1917. Unwilling to live next door to the Waldorf Hotel, his aunt, Mrs. Astor, and her son, John Jacob Astor IV (1864-1912), tore down their house and erected another hotel at its site, the Astoria. Soon the two hotels merged and became the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. It was torn down in 1928-1929 to make way for the Empire State Building. The new Waldorf Astoria at Park Avenue and East 49th Street was completed in 1931."

A Hundred Years of Conflict. Being some Records of the Services of Six Generals of the Doyle Family 1756 - 1856. UNIQUE 'GUERNSEY' ASSOCIATION COPY

Longmans Green & Co., 1911 Longmans Green & Co., 1911 8vo., First Edition, with a portrait frontispiece (original tissue guard present), and 10 plates; original red cloth, upper board framed and lettered in blind, gilt back, uncut, covers lightly age - marked else a very good, bright, clean copy. With the separately printed errata slip. The work includes accounts of General Sir John Doyle, Major - General Welbore Ellis Doyle, Lieut. - General Sir Charles Doyle, Major - General Sir Francis Hastings Doyle, Major - General Charles Joseph Doyle and Major - General Sir John Milley Doyle. A strong Guernsey connection is immediately apparent, for Sir John Doyle was Lieut. - Governor from 1802 to 1816 'and one of the most deservedly popular of our island rulers' (Tupper). In addition, Doyle's nephew, Charles Joseph Doyle, was appointed Captain in the 87th Prince's Own Regiment stationed in Guernsey in 1807. The author, Colonel Arthur Doyle, is the father of writer Arthur Conan Doyle, historical novelist and creator of Sherlock Holmes. This copy was formerly in the library of Edith Frances Carey, historian and author of Guernsey. It contains a number of relevant items of associated ephemera: 1) a long A.L.s to her from Lord de Saumarez, written from his residence at 43 Grosvenor Place London, mounted on front free endpaper; 2) an A.L.s, written on a postcard, from Henry Tupper, descendant of the Channel Islands historian Ferdinand Brock Tupper; 3) an engraved portrait of Major - General Sir Charles William Doyle (repeated as a plate) referred to in the correspondence; 4) a copy of Tupper's review of the present work, also mentioned in the postcard, as published in the 'Star' newspaper; 5) a cutting relating to the accidental death of Sir Everard Doyle. It is interesting to note that both de Saumarez and Tupper deliver in their correspondence less than favourable opinions of the work. 'it is rather carelessly compiled' (de Saumarez); 'it seems to me that Colonel Arthur Doyle is a regular plagiarist' (Tupper). A SPLENDID AND UNIQUE ASSOCIATION COPY WITH SEVERAL IMPORTANT GUERNSEY CONNECTIONS. Extremely scarce. Not in Thomson.

[Vernon, California?]: Pacific Coast League. 1911. Stapled wrappers. (8pp.). One horizontal fold, bottom half of the front wrap age-toned, some marginal tears to a couple of pages. Program for a game between the Vernon Tigers of Vernon, California, and the Los Angeles Angels. The program features photos of a couple of the players, center score card/roster pages with the names of the players pre--printed, ballpark rules: "Bottle and cushion throwing prohibited," and some amusing baseball related advertising. Founded in 1903, the PCL was the highest level of western baseball until the Dodgers and Giants moved to California in the 1950s. Vernon was one of only two cities in Los Angeles County that was "wet" and with alcoholic beverages as an attraction, the Tigers attracted big crowds by the standards of the day, and won three pennants during their 17-year history. Very early memorabilia from the PCL is exceptionally scarce. .

Der Tod in Venedig [Death in Venice]

Berlin: S. Fischer Verlag. 1st Edition. Soft cover. FIRST PRINTING IN EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of arguably Thomas Mann's most celebrated work. "At the beginning of 1911, Mann's health was poor and his development sluggish. Nothing he had published since Buddenbrooks had been received with such universal acclaim. He had planned but abandoned several long works, and had published chiefly short stories. Convinced that he needed to make a mark with a new piece that would appeal to current tastes, he poured all his mastery into Death in Venice … The story was written between July 1911 and July 1912 … Mann had intended it for S. Fischer's magazine, by that time merely called Die Neue Rundschau, but was uncharacteristically hesitant about submitting it once it was done-it was too innovative and personal. His wife convinced him to send it in. It was first published in the October and November 1912 issues" (S. Appelbaum). The publication in the October and November issues of Die Neue Rundschau preceded the rare limited edition printed by Hans von Weber. In: Die neue Rundschau (October and November issues, 1912; pp. 1368-1398; 1499-1526). Berlin: S. Fischer Verlag, 1912. Octavo, original publisher's printed wrappers. November issue with some marginal foxing; extra paper strip folded over outer margin of first page of November issue (not affecting Death in Venice). Very light edgewear to wrappers. SCARCE IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS.

Limited to 525 copies signed and numbered by the artist, this being copy no. 241. Quarto. A fine copy with only a bit of light staining to spine. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase.William Andrew ("Willy") Pogany (born Vilmos Andreas Pogány) (August 1882 – 30 July 1955) was a prolific Hungarian illustrator of children's and other books. Pogany's best known works consist of illustrations of classic myths and legends done in the Art Nouveau style. He also worked as an art director on several Hollywood films, including Fashions of 1934 and Dames. The publication of Pogány's Tannhauser was the first act in his trilogy of masterworks focused on Wagner's Germanic tales, and one of the quintet that is considered his finest work. Pogány clearly approached the commission to improve and extend techniques that he had developed through his preceding work, particularly The Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyám, and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Along with Tannhäuser, Parsifal, and Lohengrin these five books immortalized his career as an llustrator. That commitment to ongoing innovation resulted in an incredible suite of illustrations, including color lithographs, monotone and marginal illustrations and the delightful tipped-in color plates (produced in four-color process) included in Tannhauser. Themes of medieval chivalry, erotic love and moral tests are illustrated in a lavish fashion by Pogány with an outstanding use of iconography, form and colour.

Tiny bank cancellation holes are not near signatures. Fine condition. The Astor Trust Company was a financial institution at 5th Avenue and 36th Street headed by John Jacob Astor IV, William Waldorf Astor's cousin. Benjamin Altman was a director and a stockholder in the Astor Trust Company.Benjamin Altman (1840-1913) founded the department store and chain, B.
