        OSIRIS AND THE EGYPTIAN RESURRECTION

London and New York: Philip Lee Warner and G. P. Putnan's Sons, 1911. 2 volumes. First edition, issue with the imprint for America, identical to the Medici Society printing and from the same sheets and with the bindings executed in England and identical to the English issue. With over 200 illustrations after drawings from Egyptian papyri and monuments, including 4 plates in collotype, two large folding plates and a large folding frontispiece for each volume in colour. 8vo, publisher’s original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt and with gilt vignettes, upper covers lettered in gilt and with gilt stamped pictorial vignettes. xxxv, 404; viii, 440, including index pp. A fine, bright, and handsome set, still largely unopened and essentially pristine internally, the cloth nearly as fine but for some extremely minor evidence of shelving. SCARCE FIRST EDITIONS, this imprint identical to the Medici Society printing but with more gilt stamping on the otherwise identical bindings. Both issues are from the same sheets all printed by Harrison and Son in England. “In this work by Dr. Budge, the author attempts to investigate the history of Osiris and the dogma of resurrection in Ancient Egypt. As Dr. Frazer found in ‘The Golden Bough’ the central point for incomparable studies of Religions and myths, so---taking Osiris as the centre of religion of Egypt---this investigation assumes the form of a history of the beliefs in heaven and hell, of African eschatology, and a description of the other world. The cult of Osiris is African from beginning to end, a thesis readily proved by the statements concerning the religion of the modern African peoples made by travelers who have lived in Africa during the last three centuries. The modern people could not borrow from Egypt for Ancient Egypt died 2000 years ago. As these religious beliefs are identical with those of the ancient Egyptians, it seems to follow that they are so because they are the product of the indigenous African mind. Dr. Budge, therefore, tries to explain, by the beliefs of the modern African, the old African cult of the spirit ancestor who took upon himself flesh, lived and died on earth, and rose from the dead. In this work---it is believed for the first time---the facts embodied by the Pyramid Texts, written B.C. 3500, are used in a connected fashion, with special application to the rise and growth of the cult of Osiris. In all important passages, the original text is given. Reference to, and comparison with, modern Christian beliefs is carefully avoided; no deductions are drawn, and the Author has taken care not to offend the susceptibilities of any Believer” [Publisher].

Minor shelfwear, light bumping to spine ends, small spot of discolouration to rear board, a very good copy indeed. A scarce collection of weird tales, a couple of which were published in Wide World Magazine (also home to a couple of scarce bits of Hodgson) and The Idler (similarly the original home of Carnacki, did anyone ever see E. Elliot Stock and W. H. H. in the same room I wonder?). Internally clean, bearing the ownership of E.G. Vawdrey (Elizabeth Glasscott Vawdrey, a rather charming 19th century landscape artist who specialised in Cornish seaside scenes) and a gift inscription to the same on the title page. Frontispiece illustration with tissue guard present. Four plates in all. The stories are very much of an outdoorsy, mountain climbing, arctic expedition gone wrong vein and are briskly written; lots of tweed, plenty of derring do. A remarkably difficult book to lay one's hands on. .

THE FORTY QUESTIONS OF THE SOUL and THE CLAVIS or KEY

John M. Watkins, 21 Cecil Court, Charing Cross Road, London 1911 - First impression of the revised edition and first edition thus. Translated by John Sparrow Reissued by C. J. B. With Emendations by D. S. Hehner. ***Illustrated with folding map of Böhme's 'Philosophic Globe'. ***Very good in dark bottle-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine and front board. Deckled fore-edge and bottom edge of text-block (rough-cut, as called for). Offsetting to front and rear boards. Very faint unobtrusive violet stamp "Presentation Copy" to top of title-page. No inscriptions. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and creased. Corners of boards rubbed and slightly bumped. Very slight sporadic unobtrusive foxing to prelims. Interior pages clean. Spine tight. Liii prelim-pages plus 310 pages and To The Clavis or Key vi-prelim-pages plus 52 text-pages plus two-page catalogue of the books written by Jacob Boehme to rear. 246mm x 162mm. ***The Forty Questions and the Clavis were the first of Boehme's works published in English by John Sparrow. They appeared together in one volume, quarto, 17.7cm. x 13.7 cm., in the year 1647. The few copies of this volume that have come down to this present day are not exactly identical: they exhibit two different title-pages; one here is reprinted; the other, with the same wording, but not the same type throughout, has the imprint "London, Printed by Matth. Simmons, in the yeare 1647." In the copies exhibiting the latter title-page, also, the piece "To the Earnest Lovers of wisdom" is not included, so far as I am aware. Otherwise all the copies are exactly alike. ***In 1665 Sparrow published a new edition, a duodecimo, 13.5cm. x 8.2cm. This translation differs slightly from the former one, and, strange to say, the 1647 version is, on the whole, the better of the two. ***In the present reprint the 1647 edition has been followed very closely. Occasionally words from the 1665 edition have been preferred; and in three places whole paragraphs have been adopted from it (see pp. 8, 43, 129); not on account of the superiority of the translation, but because the symbols accompanying these paragraphs do not appear in the earlier edition. In these instances I have followed the example of George Ward, the editor of the 18th-century reprint, usually known as "Law's edition," of the Forty Questions.' (Quote from the prefatory note, Purley February 5th, 1911 by C.J.B.). ***Jakob Boehme (Böhme) [575-1624] was a German Christian mystic and theologian whose writings explored the nature of sin, evil and redemption. Boehme thought like the Lutherans that humanity had fallen from a state of divine grace to a state of sin and suffering, that the forces of evil included fallen angels who had rebelled against God, and that God's goal was to restore the world to a state of grace. However unlike the Lutherans he rejected "sola fide". Also he described the Fall as a necessary stage in the evolution of the Universe. His theology is difficult, based on a mystical vision which he reinterpreted and reformulated. Poets such as John Milton, Ludwig Tieck, Novalis and William Blake were inspired by Böhme's writings. Coleridge, in his Biographia Literaria, writes of Böhme with admiration. Böhme was highly thought of by the German philosophers Baader, Schelling and Schopenhauer. Hegel stated that Böhme was "the first German philosopher. C. S. Lewis and Jorge Luis Borges were also influenced by Jacob Boehme. First impression of the revised edition and first edition thus in its original boards in very nice, complete collectable condition (including folding map of the Philosophic Globe). **Of interest to collectors and scholars of rare esoteric and philosophical antiquarian titles and the writings of Jacob Boehme. ***Scarce.***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Arensky, Glazunov, Taneyev and Tchaikovsky wrote their most important violin compositions for him. As for Tschaikovsky's violin concerto, Auer refused the dedication, declaring it technically awkward and too long! After a few revisions to the violin part, he eventually played this monumental violin work in 1893, shortly before the composer's death. <br style="">
