Opus divinum, cui titulus historiae naturalis, multoqua[m] antehac unqua[m] prodiit in luce[m] castigatius, una cu[m] annotationibus Hermanolai Barbari .Paris, Jean Petit (colophon: Nicolaus Sauetier), 1526. 2 parts in 1 volume (bound in reverse order).       - Bird 1910; USTC (2 copies); not in Adams; BMC French; Durling; Hunt; Wellcome. Very rare first Paris edition of Historiae naturalis, with the annotations by Hermolaus Barbarus. Pliny's Natural history is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman Empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available at the time. It encompasses the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy, geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Pliny's accounts of some technical advances are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing (using water to wash away soil) in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding grain. Archaeological excavations have confirmed much of what he wrote. ''We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls [He] attests that pearls were the most highly rated valuable in Roman society, and that those from the Gulf were specially praised The pearl related finds at the site of El-Dur indicate the site was integrated into the maritime trade routes linking the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, India and South Arabia'' (Carter). Book 6 holds a chapter that gives the first detailed account of the regions around the Gulf, including what are now Qatar, the Emirates and Oman. Hermolaus Barbarus (1454-1494) was an Italian Renaissance scholar. His discussions of Pliny's Naturalis Historia was first published as Castigationes Plinianae in 1492, in which he made over 5000 corrections to the original text. Due to this work and other classical works he translated or edited he was considered a leader authority on Latin and Greek work on antiquity. With manuscript inscriptions on title-page. The two parts bound in reverse order. Binding rebacked and restored, but with most of the central tooling on the boards still clear. Text in very good dcondition, with only a couple marginal waterstains and some minor thumbing.

        THE TALE OF MRS TITTLEMOUSE

1910. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1910. Original blue-grey paper-covered boards with hexagonal pictorial onlay. First Edition of Beatrix Potter's tale about a wood-mouse named Thomasina Tittlemouse. The tale tells of her attempts to keep her underground home neat and tidy in spite of various unexpected visitors ("friends" they were called in the manuscript: this was changed to "visitors" in the book, but even more appropriate would be "intruders"). These include bees, a beetle, a ladybug, a butterfly, a spider and of course the debonair toad Mr. Jackson. The manuscript also included three wood-lice, but Warne objected that such creatures did not belong in a children's book; so they are instead described as "three creepy-crawly people" in the book.~There were actually two printings during (and dated) 1910, but they are identical; the third was not until 1911. Customers were given the choice of buying MRS. TITTLEMOUSE in blue-grey or cream paper-covered boards priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth priced at 1/6. For this title the pictorial paste-down endpapers were revised to their present-day design, showing Mrs. Tittlemouse and a bee in the upper right corner of each paste-down.~This is a fine, attractive copy, with scarcely any wear at all. Linder pp 205-207 and p. 429; Quinby 18.

Unikales Fotoalbum zur (Kunst-)Möbeltischlerei in Wien um 1910

CARL BAMBERGER AG, Möbelfabrik, Wien: HERRENZIMMER. Vorlagen-, Muster- bzw. Archivbuch. A letter to American teachers of history

[press of J.H. Furst Co., Baltimore], Washington, [D.C.] 1910 - First edition, signed by Henry Adams at the end of the introductory letter; 12mo, pp. vi, 214, [2]; original green cloth, spine a bit sunned and with a small snag in the cloth (not effecting any lettering), otherwise very good. "In 1910 Adams published and scattered widely a little volume which he called A Letter to American Teachers of History. Its style was designedly colloquial and its tone provocative. Assuming the validity of the second law of thermodynamics, that there is a universal tendency to the dissipation of mechanical energy, he pointed out the dilemma of teachers of history if they postulated a progressive evolution in human history towards some state of perfection, or tried to exempt mind from the operation of the law. What did they propose to do about it? Human thought should be considered as a substance passing from one phase to another, through a series of critical points which are determined by attraction, acceleration, and volume. - the equivalents of pressure, temperature, and volume in mechanical physics. In short, the future historian who would interpret the movement called history would have to seek his education in the world of mathematical physics" (Allen Johnson, in DAB). BAL 34: "Many copies, perhaps most, signed by the author at p. vi." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Photo Album]: Early 20th Century New England College

1910 - Oblong octavo. Measuring 5.5" x 8". Brown leather photo album with metal initials affixed to the front cover. A collection of 49 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 3.5" x 5.5" and 2.5" x 4.25" affixed to stiff black paper without captions. A very good photo album with rubbing and tears, containing fine photographs. A photo album of early 20th Century snapshots taken in what appears to be New England by a woman referred to only as "E.D." The photos show winter scenes at an unnamed college with both men and women participating in winter sports such as sledding and hockey as well as the inevitable snow ball fight. The latter half of the album shows spring and summer scenes with boating and hikes. The New England landscape is shown here in photos of the campus, lakes, forests, and a small town. Also included are group photos of the students as well as candids of laughing girls and well-dressed people at a function on campus. An interesting look at co-ed life in New England just after the turn of the century.

[PHOTO ALBUM OF SCENES IN WASHINGTON STATE, THE PHILIPPINES, JAPAN, HAWAII, AND ALASKA]

[Various locations, 1910. 26pp. containing eighty-six photographs, nine colored photographs, and one photographic postcard. Two photos 8 x 6 inches, the remainder approximately 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. Oblong quarto. Original black cloth. Binding separating from text block; corners and extremities worn. Photos clean, many with manuscript captions. Good plus. Photo album of assembled snapshots showing various parts of Japan, the Philippines, Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington state. The two larger images are of Snoqualmie Falls in Washington, the first showing the park area and the second showing the falls itself. The images appear to be in no particular order, with scenes from all the various locales dispersed throughout the album. Other photographs show scenes in Manila, including the "oldest church," a "Spanish transport sunk by Dewey" in the Spanish-American War, Fort Malata, other churches, some water buffalo, and other rural scenes in the area. Images of Honolulu include a group of school children, the palace, views in a park, and some rural scenes, including a waterfall. Images of Japan are primarily from Nagasaki, Kobe, and Osaka. They include views of the harbors and ships, the dry dock at Nagasaki, the lower and upper falls at Kobe, Japanese peddlers aboard a ship, "temple 2000 years old" at Nagasaki, among others. Views of Alaska are primarily taken from off the coast, showing Dutch Harbor from several angles. The transport ship Oopack is featured in several photos; the Oopack was a British merchant vessel that was sunk by the Germans in 1918 off the coast of Malta. Several unlabeled photos at the rear of the volume show what are presumably local scenes from home, likely the Pacific Northwest. There are two farmers plowing a field behind a horse, bathers at the seashore, picnickers, and other group photos. The picture postcard is a baseball team group shot, and the colored images are views of Japan.

Original colour printed wrappers; slightly soiled. Fine example of this rare and important programme presenting the first ever production of the famous Firebird composed by 28-year old Stravinsky. It also included Diaghilev's productions of Sheherazade and Carnival. Firebird was to originally be danced by Anna Pavlova but when she heard Stravinsky's music she declared it "noise" and refused to dance to it. Tamara Karsavina was given the iconic role. The programme features multiple photographs of the dancers, as well as colour illustrations of Bakst's costumes and set designs - some of the most famous ones being drawn for Firebird. Dancers include all stars of the early Ballet Russes team: Pavlova, Karsavina, Nijinskiy. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Grant of arms donated by Alfred Scott-Galty, Garter King-of Arms, to Christopher Furness, first Baron Furness of Grantley (23 April 1852 - 10 November 1912), British businessman and liberal politician.

British Empire, London, d.d. 6 September 1910. Vellum charter (60 x 52 cm.), manuscript, calligraphic text. With 4 hand coloured coats-of-arms (three of the King and Scott-Galty) and one of Furness. With the signature and attached wax seal of Scott-Galty in brass crowned box. In a made to fit oblong wooden case, with metal closing mechanism and clothed with red linen, decorated in gold with GVR initials and crowns. Good condition. Furness was born in West Hartlepool, Co. Durham. He started his career as a buyer in Thomas Furness and Company, wholesale provision merchants, a firm owned by his older brother Thomas, and became a partner two years later. Stock for the business had to be brought in by ship, and Christopher found that it would be cheaper to use their own vessels, rather than hire other peoples. Consequently, on his initiative, the firm bought several steam ships from local shipbuilder William Gray & Company in 1877. In 1882 Christopher Furness and Company was formed and the business was split into two. Thomas kept the provision merchants, while Christopher took charge of the shipping fleet. After seven years as a partner in the shipbuilding firm of Edward Withy and Company, Furness merged it with his own company in 1891, to form Furness, Withy and Company. By a series of mergers, his firms become the main employers in Hartlepool, until they finally closed in the 1980s. Furness was also involved in politics, and was elected Member of Parliament for The Hartlepools at a by-election in 1891. He lost the seat in 1895, but was re-elected in 1900 general election, and served until his re-election in January 1910 was declared void after an electoral petition. He was knighted in 1895 and in 1910 he was raised to the peerage as the first Baron Furness, of Grantley in the West Riding of the County of Yorkshire. Moreover, in 1909 he was made an Honorary Freeman of West Hartlepool. In 1876 Furness married Jane Annette Suggit. They had one son, Marmaduke, born in 1883. Christopher Furness died on 10 November 1912, aged 60. He was succeeded in the barony by his son Marmaduke, who in 1918 was created Viscount Furness. With this charter certain alterations to the Furness family crest were officially accepted. Furness had applied for these changes. The family motto reads: I'll Defend. This charter was issued in the first year of the reign of George V. H100

        Small Country Houses of To-day

Country Life London [1910]-1925 - 4to. 4 volumes, set. Original green cloth, gilt. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs and drawings. All volumes are a bit bumped and worn. Volume 1 is rubbed with loss to cloth at tail of spine and with discolouration along lower and leading edges. Remains of small label removed from front paste down. Volumes 2 & 3 are slightly cocked and faded on spines. Neat ink ownership on front paste downs. Light foxing to end papers. Text clean in all volumes. Very good +. Originally published as one volume in 1910 and reprinted without any apparent changes in 1912. Since neither printing gives a date, it is impossible to say whether the present set starts with a first or second printing. The 'Second Series' expands the publication into three volumes and should be considered a new work, especially since it rearranges the original material which had been in alphabetical order of architect but is now grouped 'with reference to the traditions which inspired them'. This set includes 'Second Series' Volume 1 (Third Edition Revised, 1922), Volume 2 (Second Edition Revised, 1922) & Volume 3 (First Edition, by R. Randal Phillips, 1925).       Adolf Ecksteins Publishing House, Berlin-Charlottenburg 1910 - Massive volume of photomechanical prints (18.5x12 in.) mostly of American and European scientists.         CAMERA ADVENTURES IN THE AFRICAN WILDS; Being an Account of a Four Month's Expedition in British East Africa, for the Purpose of Securing Photographs from Life of the Game

London: William Heinemann, 1910. First edition. Illustrated with a vast profusion of photographs and maps. 4to, publisher's original full red cloth, gilt lettered on the spine, the upper cover gilt lettered and with a gilt pictorial vignette of a rhinoceros meandering through tall grass. In the rare original dustjacket. xviii, 231 pp. A fine copy in the very rare 1910 dustjacket, clean and unusually well preserved. There is some slight foxing to endpapers as would be typical. RARE FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET. Dugmore was one of the first African travelers to pursue photography in lieu of hunting with the gun. He found the study of animals through the lens to be far more useful and interesting than over the barrel of a gun. He felt that photographic hunting was not only a keen sport bu t in itself, provided the greatest possible opportunity for studying the life of wild animals, without closed seasons. The animal pictures throughout the book are direct photographic reproductions of the original photographs. There has been no retouching or faking of any description, and the great number of photographs were achieved mainly in the wilds of Kenya at the turn of the century.
