Modernisierte Ornamentik im Germanischen und Romanischen Stil.

Folio 12 3/4 x 19 5/8". Plauen: C. F. Schulz & Co., [circa 1910]. Folio 12 3/4 x 19 5/8", [1] title page, 20 leaves of color lithographs printed to recto only. Quarter black cloth portfolio, decorated black paper boards printed in red and gold, edges rubbed and chipped, corners chipped, with gray cloth ties. Plates have some finger marks and small stains to outer margins, slight foxing to edges, otherwise very good. A dramatic collection of German Art Nouveau or Jugendstil interior designs inspired by Romanesque architecture. The plates feature between one and nine panels, many with intricate knotted designs, both German and Romanesque floral patterns, round-headed arches, and acanthus-leaf decoration. Some incorporate animals such as deer, birds or dragons, printed in a palette of grays, greens, muted blues, reds, yellows, browns, and accented in gold. The first plate features a magnificent Angelic figure in a Romanesque architectural style. The two aesthetics are seamlessly combined to create a harmonious and palatial example of thoughtful ornamental design from the period.

CARL BAMBERGER AG, Möbelfabrik, Wien: Englische-Stile. [Album with 47 tipped-in vintage photographies and 1 tipped-in colour pencil drawing of arm chairs, bureaus, chests, tables, sofas and stools]. S.l. [Vienna], s.a. [1910]. 34:25:5,5 cm (album), 7:10 to 24:19 cm (photos). 41 dark brown cardboard leafs, where of 40 with 47 tipped-in photos and 1 drawing in different portrait or landscape format, numbered as follows: p. 1-80, [2 p.]. Original dark-brown half cloth with black title on front cover painted by hand with stencil, cardboards bound in separately with strong linen folds and partly with transparent protection leafs. Unique archival document and probably also presentation album for customers of renown Vienna furniture industry Carl Bamberger AG, a company that also executed for Wiener Werkstätte and was „Arianised" when the Nazis annexed Austria in 1938. The 47 included photographies of this album (accompanied by one additional colour pencil drawing), tipped in on hand-numbered cardboards and titled „English style", show arm chairs, bureaus, chests, tables, sofas and stools, mainly in suites. The front leaf recto bears a tipped-in hand-written table of contents mentioning 6 production series titled „Butterfly", „Franklin", „Hamilton", „Stephenson", „Tennison" and „Wellington". Additionally „Beardsley" and „Morris" and to be found inside, hand-written on 2 of the photos. Most of the furniture is designed in neoclassicist styles of the 18th and 19th century, however some of them also incorporate Art Nouveau and other modern elements. Many of the objects were photographed with small panels aside, stating measures. Others are marked by hand with different combinations of numbers and letters, numbered with a stamp or stamped with the company's seal („Technisches Büro / Carl Bamberger A. G. / Wien., V. Schönbrunnerstr. 25."). Paul Bamberger, son of founder Carl, had to flee the Nazis in 1938 due to his Jewish origins and continued the business in New York. The company's Viennese head office in Schönbrunnerstraße 25 was taken over by neighbouring cabinetmaker Mathias Brunngraber (Rüdigergasse 8), whose successor ran the business until 1982. Cover worn and torn due to heavy use, cardboards in parts with traces of glue, protection papers partly creased, some of the photos slightly stained, altogether well preserved album, a unique collection of Viennese conservative cabinetmaking around 1900. Aufbau (New York), 21st April 1944, p. 23 (advertisement of Bamberger, New York); Adolph Lehmann's allgemeiner Wohnungs-Anzeiger 1938, vol. 2, p. 263 and 1939, vol. 2, p. 212f.

1910. Hi, Today I am listing a set of Wisdens , all rebound with covers from a well travelled collector. J Kingsley Havers OBE QC son of Sir William Havers. The books have been to many places , mainly Botswana but also Kenya Belize and Gibraltar which are all listed on the bookplate. The 1911-1919 in nicer blue boards and the 1910 in green, the green rebind is a bit shaky but the internal covers are in good order and contents very respectable. A nice cheap set. Strategy 1.         Famous Personalities from Montecarlo.

[c. 1910]. Size: 725 x 515 mm. Mounted size 855 x 640 mm. Lithograph. Printed colour. Very good condition. Georges Goursat (1863-1934), known as Sem, attained a high level of success with his wonderful portrayals of Paris at the turn of the century. This outstanding caricaturist was a member of the Salon des Humoristes and an officer of the Legion of Honor. His works offer us glimpses into Parisian high society at the turn of the Century. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable, particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition, in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. Sem captured the spirit of the subject and in turn produced images that were true to life. This wonderful print is a brilliant example of Sem's series "Famous Personalities from Montecarlo", published in Paris c.1910.

A collection of separately issued booklets relating to South Australian properties featured in the important series of volumes, 'Pastoral Homes of Australia'

The seven substantial quarto volumes were published in Sydney between 1910 and 1931. The first four volumes were published by 'The Pastoralist's Review' between 1910 and 1914; the three volumes of the New Series were published by 'The Pastoral Review' between 1929 and 1931. Featured properties were each given twelve pages of well-illustrated text, and it would appear that unpaginated sections, attractively presented in cord-bound wrappers with the name of the property, its owner and the publisher in gilt on the front cover, were made available to the owners for distribution to family, friends and colleagues. On offer as one lot are the separately-issued booklets relating to nineteen South Australian properties; eight of the booklets were prepared for the first series of volumes, the remaining eleven for the New Series. The cover titles of the latter are Anlaby; Ben Lomond; Buckland Park; Canowie, Sheaoak, Oraparinna and Wilkatana; The Glen; Keyneton and Weroona; Koomooloo, Sturt Vale & Wahroonga; Millbrae, Native Valley and Sturtbrae, Sturt; Munduney & Moralana; Padthaway & Lake Roy; and Struan. The cover titles of the former are Anama and Nombi; Bungaree; The Canowie Stud; Gums; Nalpa; Rhine Park and Cappeedee; Sheoak Hills and Pitcairn; and Wilgena, Wooltana, &c. The Canowie Stud booklet is in a variant binding that would appear to have been produced for (or by) the property itself; there is no reference to its source publication, and the words 'A Souvenir' appear in the bottom right-hand corner of the cover. Of far more interest, however, is the fact that three of them - Anama and Nombi; Nalpa; and Wilgena, Wooltana, &c. - do not appear in any of the published volumes. Only the fourth volume of the first series contained any South Australian properties, and it may well be that the outbreak of war put paid to plans for any further volumes in the series. Fifteen years later, when the project was revived, the information on these properties would have been obsolete ... We have been unable to inspect the third volume of the New Series, but to the best of our knowledge, the only South Australian property in the published volumes not included in the collection on offer here is Mt Crawford (see pages 367-378 in the final volume of the first series). Apart from trifling marks and creases to a few covers, the entire collection is in superb condition.

[Unpublished lectures for course on psychiatric nursing at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital]

Baltimore, 1910. Twelve typescript lectures, averaging 10 pages each; comprising 130 total pages. Introduced by collective title page ("Tuesday talks for juniors") and dated "October 1909–." Each lecture distinctly foliated and fastened with contemporary paper clips, with minor offsetting. With a handful of annotations to text (both manuscript and typescript). The lectures are accompanied by a presentation copy of Nursing problems and obligations by Sara E. Parsons. Boston: Whitcomb & Barrows, 1916. Purple cloth boards, wiht gilt lettering to front panel and spine. Contents: xi, [5], 149, [1] pages. With Farrar's bookplate affixed to front endpaper and presentation inscription to front pastedown. "To be a good nurse is first of all to be a good woman." Before becoming the long-time editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry, Clarence B. Farrar accepted a position in 1904 as Assistant Physician and Director of Laboratories at the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, where he was also an Associate Professor in Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins (having just returned from two years in Heidelberg, where he studied with Emil Kraepelin, Franz Nissl, and Alois Alzheimer). A year after his arrival in Baltimore, the Sheppard-Pratt would become one of the first institutions to develop a psychiatric nursing program. In its inaugural two-year curriculum (University of Toronto Archives, B1999-011), Farrar is listed as delivering a lecture to the junior class entitled “Observations of symptoms” and a senior lecture on Psychology. It's unclear—in titling the present typescripts as he did ("Tuesday talks for juniors")—whether these lectures represent a portion of Farrar's contribution to the nursing curriculum for 1909 and 1910, or whether they were instead intended as informal lectures for the graduate nurses from other training schools who were welcomed to the Sheppard-Pratt for a four-month course in the care of psychiatric patients. Either way, in these lectures, Farrar is plain about the importance of the subject: “In many cases, it is chiefly the nurse who has been instrumental in doing good, rather than the doctor; the nurse is constantly by the patient's side and the one towards whom the patient is most likely to turn, so that the nurse, then, is very often chiefly responsible for the patient's recovery.” The somewhat free-floating lectures include references to psychiatric history and theory, patient management strategies, case studies, "family skeletons," and a handful of references to compassionate euthanasia. The first two lectures here appear to be orphaned from the full 1909 set of lectures, while the remaining ten lectures comprise a complete course of Tuesday lectures from the following year (October 11 to November 29, 1910). Given the overlap between these two sets, it's interesting to note how Farrar reshaped his materials. These lectures are accompanied by a presentation copy of Nursing problems and obligations (1916) by Sara E. Parsons, who was then-Superintendent of the Training School for Nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital. Arriving in Baltimore at the same time as Farrar, Parsons had been hired by Dr. Edward Brush as the organizer for the Sheppard-Pratt's nursing program. According to Farrar's reminiscences: “[Brush] secured the best nurse available in the country to start this school.” Parsons, it would seem, held Farrar in similar esteem. In her presentation inscription to this copy, she writes: “I waited as long as I could for your book on Ethics and finally did the best I could myself. Your ethics have influenced mine to such a degree that you ought to be interested in my book. Yours faithfully, Sara E.”

[Various locations. ca. 1910]. - 26pp. containing eighty-six photographs, nine colored photographs, and one photographic postcard. Two photos 8 x 6 inches, the remainder approximately 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. Oblong quarto. Original black cloth. Binding separating from text block; corners and extremities worn. Photos clean, many with manuscript captions. Good plus. Photo album of assembled snapshots showing various parts of Japan, the Philippines, Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington state. The two larger images are of Snoqualmie Falls in Washington, the first showing the park area and the second showing the falls itself. The images appear to be in no particular order, with scenes from all the various locales dispersed throughout the album. Further photographs show scenes in Manila, including the "oldest church," a "Spanish transport sunk by Dewey" in the Spanish-American War, Fort Malata, other churches, some water buffalo, and other rural scenes in the area. Images of Honolulu include a group of school children, the palace, views in a park, and some rural scenes, including a waterfall. Images of Japan are primarily from Nagasaki, Kobe, and Osaka. They include views of the harbors and ships, the dry dock at Nagasaki, the lower and upper falls at Kobe, Japanese peddlers aboard a ship, "temple 2000 years old" at Nagasaki, and others. Views of Alaska are primarily taken from off the coast, showing Dutch Harbor from several angles. The transport ship Oopack is featured in several photos; the Oopack was a British merchant vessel that was sunk by the Germans in 1918, off the coast of Malta. Several un- labeled photos at the rear of the volume show what are presumably local scenes from home, likely the Pacific Northwest. There are to farmers plowing a field behind a horse, bathers at the seashore, picnickers, and other group photos. The picture post card is a baseball team group shot, and the colored images are views of Japan.

1910. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1910. Original blue-grey paper-covered boards with hexagonal pictorial onlay. First Edition of Beatrix Potter's tale about a wood-mouse named Thomasina Tittlemouse. The tale tells of her attempts to keep her underground home neat and tidy in spite of various unexpected visitors ("friends" they were called in the manuscript: this was changed to "visitors" in the book, but even more appropriate would be "intruders"). These include bees, a beetle, a ladybug, a butterfly, a spider and of course the debonair toad Mr. Jackson. The manuscript also included three wood-lice, but Warne objected that such creatures did not belong in a children's book; so they are instead described as "three creepy-crawly people" in the book.~There were actually two printings during (and dated) 1910, but they are identical; the third was not until 1911. Customers were given the choice of buying MRS. TITTLEMOUSE in blue-grey or cream paper-covered boards priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth priced at 1/6. For this title the pictorial paste-down endpapers were revised to their present-day design, showing Mrs. Tittlemouse and a bee in the upper right corner of each paste-down.~This is a fine, attractive copy, with scarcely any wear at all.Linder pp 205-207 and p. 429; Quinby 18.
