        MIDNIGHT HOUSE AND OTHER TALES

London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd.,. 1910. title page printed in red and black, original gray paper-covered boards, printed paper label affixed to spine panel, top edge trimmed, fore and bottom edges untrimmed.. Edges of the text block and preliminary and terminal leaves foxed. (just a bit more than average for this book; the paper stock used is. prone to heavy foxing), free endpapers just a darkened (a bit less. than usual), spine label rubbed, a near fine copy. A nice copy of a. very scarce issue of this book which is seldom found in decent. condition. (#114006). First edition, variant issue. This issue, bound in gray boards, rather than the usual gilt stamped green cloth, is also printed on thicker paper stock, here measuring 28 mm across the top of the sheets, as opposed to 22 mm across the top of cloth bound copies. This appears to be a special binding of some sort, probably issued around the same time as the first issue cloth bound copies (there was a later issue circa the 1940s, but copies of the later issue we have seen were bound in cloth, not boards). Regardless of their status, these copies bound in boards are quite uncommon. Harvey's first short story collection, with many tales of the weird and supernatural. "It is usually difficult to distinguish the real situations from the disintegrating minds of Harvey's characters. Feverish moods and the unclear nature of personal relationships are the essential elements of his world. From the obsessive to the whimsical, William Fryer Harvey remains an excellent craftsman throughout the corpus of his engaging, sardonic fantasies." - Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction Writers, p. 595.         The Bride and The Pennant

Laird and Lee Chicago: Laird and Lee. (1910). First. First edition. Paperback original. Preface by Charles A. Comisky. Small bookstore label on the front wrap and the title page, cheap pulp paper quite browned, a couple of very small chips to the page edges and a couple of tiny chips to the wrappers, still a clean, very good plus copy in pictorial wrappers. Very rare pulp novel by the Cubs' "Peerless Leader" and which includes a short biography of Chance. McCue in Baseball by the Books speculates that it was ghostwritten by Hugh Fullerton, who dedicated his own first baseball novel to Chance, and who ended his last novel with the toast, "To the bride, the groom and another pennant." Fullerton was a reporter for a Chicago newspaper whose reportage was instrumental in breaking the 1919 Black Sox scandal, and he was the only local writer to predict that the White Sox "Hitless Wonders" would beat the Cubs in the 1906 World Series. Rare. .

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, CORRECTING A PRESS ARTICLE IN 'THE LADY'S PICTORIAL.'

Ayot. St. Lawrence or London. 11 December 1910 Ayot. St. Lawrence, or London. 11 December 1910. One full page, in ink, on oblong octavo sheet of dual address letterhead, ca. 175 words. Folded for mailing, a few marginal spots or finger smudges, otherwise very good. To Arthur Goddard, Jr., of THE LADY'S PICTORIAL: "May I suggest that you should give the writer of the enclosed cutting a friendly blowing-up. It happens that the passage I have underlined is not only true, but precisely the opposite of the truth. My contribution to the subject, which is accessible in print to anyone who takes the trouble to verify statements before making them public, is a demonstration of the utter impossibility of the State Stud Farm proposal, and the necessity of trusting solely to Nature in marriage ...." He further cautions, "from one journalist to another - a writer so incautious and inconsiderate of his journal and his editor may make his (or her) next mistake about one of the people who live by taking actions against newspapers. You are in no danger in my case ...." He concludes by suggesting that the situation might prove an opportunity to "bring an inexperienced contributor up to the mark ... I offer you the opportunity for what it is worth. Yours faithfully G. Bernard Shaw." Shaw has captioned the letter at the top: "Private."

The Letter That Launched Woodrow Wilson's Meteoric Political Career

The Letter That Launched Woodrow Wilson's Meteoric Political Career. Cited in his biography, this letter helped to secure him the gubernatorial nomination Wilson was a lifelong academic and college president. During the first decade of the 20th century, he made the newspapers for his notable reforms at Princeton University and for trying (unsuccessfully) to break up its elite eating clubs. During his years as Princeton president, he had grown increasingly progressive and had come to believe that politics was good and that government could be a constructive and beneficial force. This was an era when reform was in the air, and independent men not beholden to party bosses or special interests were enormously popular, so Wilson's activities at Princeton led to his name being mentioned as a gubernatorial prospect in New Jersey in 1910. The Democratic Party could not help but note Wilson's popularity and grew interested in him. However, the Democrats were as afraid of Wilson's sidestepping the party or trying to smash its organization as they were impressed by his popularity. For his part, by mid-1910, Wilson was ready to leave Princeton. In June of that year, Jim Smith, the powerful Democratic boss of Essex County, took a trip westward and spoke with Democratic governors along the way. He was surprised to find that they knew of Wilson and shocked that they were actually mentioning him as a potential presidential candidate. The New Jersey Democratic Party organization was in a quandry; it clearly had a candidate who could get votes, but would he destroy the machine if nominated? It turned to a friend for help in finding out. When Smith reached Chicago, he met with that city's boss, Roger Sullivan, and another powerful politico, John M. Harlan. Harlan, son of one U.S. Supreme Court Justice and father of another, was an old friend of Wilson from the days they were at Princeton together. According to August Heckscher in his biography Woodrow Wilson, when Smith stated his doubts about Wilson's intentions, Harlan offered to act as an intermediary. He wrote his friend Wilson and asked if he were elected governor, would he set about "fighting and breaking down the existing Democratic organization and replacing it with one of his own?" Heckscher goes on to quote this letter, stating that Wilson's response reassured the party organization, leading to his nomination for governor a few months later. Typed Letter Signed on Princeton University letterhead, June 23, 1910, to John M. Harlan, accommodating the Democratic Party while at the same time staking out a completely independent position and leaving himself free to act. "I owe you an apology for not having replied sooner to yours of June 11th. The Commencement season began, as you know, on June 10th, and ever since it began I have been in the throes of the busiest part of the season. I need not say that I read your letter with the greatest interest. I would be perfectly willing to assure Mr. Smith that I would not, if elected Governor, set about'fighting and breaking down the existing Democratic organization and replacing it with one of my own.' The last thing I should think of would be building up a machine of my own. So long as the existing Democratic organization was willing to work with thorough heartiness for such policies as would re-establish the reputation of the State and the credit of the Democratic party in serving the State, I should deem myself inexcusable for antagonizing it, so long as I was left absolutely free in the matter of measures and men. I have been so extremely busy and business has brought me so near the eve of my vacation, that I do not see how it would be quite possible for me to arrange to lunch with Mr. Hurley and Mr. Smith in New York, but I should be very pleased to do so if it should turn out to be possible. My address will be care of Miss Florence Griswold, Lyme, Conn. I deeply appreciate your kindness in keeping these political matters in mind. You are certainly most generous and I appreciate your interest and friendship very warmly indeed. It seems to me as if the developments in Princeton make it pretty certain that my duty lies here in the immediate future and not in the political field, but I am as eager as ever to do anything that is possible, consistent with my other obligations, to help forward the rehabilitation of the great party in which I have always believed." Here, Wilson does agree to work through the party organization but qualifies it by stating that the organization must "reestablish" its credit (in other words credibility, by becoming more honest and less boss-controlled) and leave him free "as to measures and men" (which amounts to control of appointments and legislation). This letter led to Wilson's election as governor in November 1910, and less than three years after this letter launched his political career, a college president took the oath of office as president of the United States, a startling rise to power.

A Collection of Books Inscribed to Rachel MacKenzie

First. A collection of 11 Singer books, nearly all Inscribed to The New Yorker editor Rachel MacKenzie. Rachel MacKenzie (1910-1980) replaced Katherine White as the fiction editor at The New Yorker on the recommendation of May Sarton. During her tenure at the magazine, MacKenzie was noted for her nurturing and editing of, among others, Sarton, Muriel Spark, Philip Roth, and especially Isaac Bashevis Singer. In Master of Dreams: A Memoir of Isaac Bashevis Singer, Singer's assistant of 12 years and later editor, Dvorah Telushkin, remembers watching MacKenzie work with Singer by reading each story out loud to him, line by line, and how she would sometimes request stronger endings to his stories. At MacKenzie's memorial in 1980, Singer revealed that, "Whenever I write something, my first question is, would Rachel have liked it? What faults and defects would she have found in it? To many of her writers, she will remain the measure of what is good and wrong in all their literary endeavors." Singer later dedicated a special edition of his collected stories to MacKenzie, calling her "a literary leader in the best sense of the word."

Gott skick.. Zetterlund I:121.

        THE COMPLETE POETICAL WORKS

Houghton Mifflin Company Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1910. Large Paper Edition." ONE OF 500 COPIES. Beautifully Bound, and this Set Never Read 279 x 159 mm (11 x 6 1/4").10 volumes. LOVELY DARK OLIVE BROWN THREE-QUARTER CRUSHED MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, marbled sides and endpapers, raised bands, spine compartments densely gilt with floral and foliate tools emanating from a large central rose, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed, THE SET ENTIRELY UNOPENED. Vignette title pages, a map of the Lake District, and 75 PHOTOGRAVURE PLATES (with letterpress tissue guards), including one hand-colored plate at the beginning that duplicates a black and white plate elsewhere in the volume. Title page in red and black. Each volume with full-page tipped-in bookplate of Fannie May Howard. IN REMARKABLY FINE CONDITION, essentially without any wear, virtually pristine internally, and obviously used so little that the volumes open unwillingly. This is a really beautiful and almost untouched set of the works of William Wordsworth (1770-1850), who changed English poetry forever. When he (and Samuel Taylor Coleridge) published "Lyrical Ballads" in 1798-1800, he undertook the revolutionary modification of the entrenched traditional artificial verse styles in order to capture forceful sincerity and elemental human emotions. His radical purpose was nothing short of the reformation of poetry by deposing an artificial literary tradition and substituting a new poetics, more in keeping with normal contemporary speech patterns. Folk ballads, as "natural" poetry, formed his models for pieces that reveal a sense of lasting joy in nature and in experiences common to all humans. And there was considerably more to his poetic output afterwards, as he lived and wrote for another half century beyond the appearance of this landmark publication. Among other things, Wordsworth established himself as the first great English writer since Milton to produce a substantial number of notable poems in the sonnet form. Our edition of his complete poetry includes an index to titles and to first lines as well as an essay entitled "William Wordsworth" by Hamilton Wright Mabie. The publisher's note at the front says that the illustrations here are "intended to reproduce the atmosphere of Wordsworth's poetry through the medium of a remarkable series of photographs taken by Walmsley Brothers of Ambleside, England. These artists have lived all their lives in the Wordsworth country, and are enthusiastic admirers of the great poet, and it is hoped that their photographs, the product of a genuine love of Wordsworth, a wide and intimate knowledge of the Wordsworth country, and a keen artistic sense, will add materially to the reader's pleasure [as well as] afford a fitting accompaniment to the text.
