Text block tight; internally clean and complete, with frontispiece, 11 plates, and 51 illustrations. The first known copy on the market in jacket in over 30 years. With laid in Night Lettergram handwritten and signed by Addams in her capacity as President of the Woman's Peace Party.Jane Addams' global advocacy for women's economic, educational, and social equality made her the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In her autobiography Twenty Years at Hull-House, Addams recounts her domestic activism as the founder of the second and most innovative settlement house in the U.S. Originally conceived in 1889 as a space where women of privilege could share their knowledge in humanistic fields such as art, literature, and music with the less fortunate, Hull House rapidly transformed into a community support system where working women could learn practical job skills, obtain medical and legal services, and locate affordable housing. Addams' two decades working in inner-city Chicago ultimately inspired her to take a global approach to advocacy; and she founded the Women's League for Peace and Freedom in addition to serving as President of the Woman's Peace Party. The enclosed Night Lettergram to Elsie M. Hill documents this work, as Addams writes in her hand, "Will you strengthen the appeal to be made next Friday by Ethel Snowden of England and Rosika Schwimmer of Hungary to President Wilson by telegramming him immediately at Washington somewhat as follows: 'We urge a conference of neutral nations dedicated to finding a just settlement of this war.' Jane Addams, President, Woman's Peace Party." In Krichmar 4411. [Attributes: First Edition]

Original Japanese Early 20th Century Textile Designs.

A collection of 43 original gouache designs for textiles very likely created during the Taishō or early Shōwa period (1910s-20s). The sizes vary with the largest of the sheets measuring around 75 x 35cm with a number though still large, somewhat smaller or of a slightly different shape. The smaller 25 sheets in the collection measure around 35 x 55cm. Handwritten characters on the reverse of one design reads "No 14 of 55", two others have small blue rubber stamps on the reverse which read "No 302" and "No 304" and another a stamp which reads "Kitamura" which may be the name of the company or the person who created the design. Some tears and chips at edges. Each sheet is loosely inserted in a protective mylar sleeve and the collection is presented in an conservation standard clamshell box. A scarce and most attractive collection of a working set of designs. A mixture of designs capturing the fusion of Japanese and Western influences in Japan in the pre-World War II period. The many attractive designs are neither quite Japanese nor Western but all are very striking and may have been a collection of designs for an autumn range.         Commission des Inondations. Rapports et Documents Divers. 1910

ciii, 707 pp. volume put out by the Flood Commission, chaired by Alfred Picard, following the Great Flood of Paris of 1910, in which various public authorities analyze the causes of the catastrophic flooding with regards to specific facets of Parisian infrastructure including the bridges, sewers, railways, trams, telegraph and telephone lines, electricity, and gas, and make recommendations for changes to prevent another similar disaster, including the establishment of reservoirs and a deepening of the Seine. Tables, notes. Illustrated with 18 large folding plates including a hydrologic map of the Seine basin, maps of flooded regions, a railway map, and diagrams and charts. 4to. Newer 3/4 leather with raised spine and marbled boards. Paris (Imprimerie Nationale) 1910. In the winter of 1909-1910, Paris and its environs experienced higher than average rainfall. The water level of the Seine rose eight meters, and the city became flooded through its sewers, subway tunnels, and drains. These tunnels had been enlarged as part of Baron Haussmann's changes to the city in 1878, which magnified the level of destruction. Much of Paris's infrastructure was shut down as it was built within the sewage system to keep from cluttering the streets. Tracks at the Gare d'Orsay even sat under a meter of water. On January 28 the water in the Seine reached its maximum height of 8.62 meters above its normal level, and in March levels finally returned to normal. Very scarce; as of January 2018, WorldCat locates only two institutional holdings in North America.
