Rodin, Dessins Inédits. Ten Drawings by Rodin

New York, Brentano's, [1910]. Two of the Steichen gravures are slightly uneven at their edges due to how the book was cut; two of the Rodin drawings might be trimmed at the edge, or issued that way. Overall a near fine copy in blue cloth and half blue morocco including the tips, with gilt dentelles and lettering (leather lightly worn at the spine and extremities).. First Edition. Small quarto. Rare book on Rodin featuring four beautiful photogravures by Edward Steichen: one a portrait of Rodin, the others of Balzac; with two additional photogravures and seven tipped-in color plates after Rodin's drawings. Likely issued on the occasion of Rodin's 1910 exhibition at Alfred Stieglitz's Photo-Secession gallery, and including work from Rodin's 1908 exhibition. Published by Brentano's, the book nonetheless has all the earmarks of a Camera Work volume: from design, to font, to the splendid tissue gravures. While the title calls for ten Rodin drawings, this copy has nine, including two photogravures. OCLC tracks three copies. Like ours, the copy at NYPL has nine drawings, with thirteen total illustrations, including Steichen. A copy at the Philadelphia Museum of Art is missing half the plates. The third copy is reproduced partially in facsimile. With texts by Benjamin de Cessares, Agnes Ernst Meyer, S.H., and Arthur Symons (reproduced from Camera Work).

Great English Collections: Stafford House. 5 fascicules housed in 2 portfolios, as issued (Complete)

Paris: Goupil & Co, 1910. Limited First edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. 1/200. Folio (15 x 12 3/4"). Each of the five fascicules in original printed stiff paper wrappers, with publisher's logo and red and black lettering to front covers. The five fascicules are housed in two olive cloth spine over printed paper covered portfolios, with publisher's logo and red and black lettering to front covers. String ties. Main title in red and black lettering. Decorative initial. This handsomely produced monograph on Stafford House, a magnificent mansion located in the St. James' district of London's West End, and the spectacular private art collections it contains, is lavishly illustrated with no less than 3 in-text, and 100 mounted photogravure plates, of which 20 are in full color. The construction of the house started in 1825 for the Duke of York and Albany, the second son of King George III, and it was initially known as York House. Sir Robert Smirke was originally hired to design the house, until under the influence of the Duke's mistress the Duchess of Rutland, he was replaced by Benjamin Dean Wyatt who mainly designed the exterior. The house was only a shell by the time of the death of the Duke in 1827. It is constructed from Bath stone, in a neo-classical style, being the last great London mansion to use this essentially Georgian style. The house was purchased by and completed for the 2nd Marquess of Stafford (later 1st Duke of Sutherland) and was known as Stafford House for almost a century. The completed building was three floors in height, the State rooms being on the first floor or piano nobile, family living rooms on the ground floor and family bedrooms on the second floor. There is also a basement containing service rooms, including the government wine cellar. The interior was designed by Benjamin Dean Wyatt, Sir Charles Barry and Sir Robert Smirke and was completed in 1840. "The Sutherlands' liberal politics and love of the arts attracted many distinguished guests, including factory reformer the Earl of Shaftesbury, anti-slavery author Harriet Beecher Stowe and Italian revolutionary leader Giuseppe Garibaldi. Chopin gave a recital there in 1848 in the presence of Queen Victoria. Almost as influential as the visitors was the décor, which was to set the fashion for London reception rooms for nearly a century. The mainly Louis XIV Style interiors created a stunning backdrop for the Sutherlands' impressive collection of paintings and objets d'art, much of which can still be seen in the house today." For more information, see: Stourton, James. "Great Houses of London," London, Francis Lincoln Publisher (2012).The plates depict masterpieces of various schools and masters, such as: - St. Francis Borgia: The Duke of Gandia at the door of a convent, by Diego Rodriguez da Silva Velazquez (Spanish School).- Bacchante and Satyr, by Nicolas Poussin (French School)- Queen Charlotte; Lord Ligonier; Elizabeth Sutherland, by Sir Joshua Reynolds (English School)- Coronation of Marie de Medicis, by Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish School)- Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland, by John Singer Sargent (American School)- A River Scene, by Jan van Goyen (Dutch School)- Group of Children listening to an old piper, by Louis Le Nain (French School)- The Prodigal Son, by Bartolome Esteban Murillo (Spanish School)- The Great Hall and Staircase, Stafford House, on the occasion of a visit of the Queen Victoria, 1849, by Eugène Lamy (French School)Also includes sculptures, pieces of furniture and artworks such as:- Ganymede Feedong Jove's Eagle, marble group by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1797-1838)- Bronze clock, with figures and globe, by Jean Romilly (1714-1796)- Oliver Cromwell, marble bust by Edward Pierce (1630-1695)One of 200 numbered copies of which this one is stamped "OFFERT" (Gift) on the colophon.Minor age-toning along edges of wrappers and portfolios.         Skepnader och tankar & Folkfienden: tidspolitiska uppsatser

Inbunden bok. Skepnader och tankar af Per Hallström. Albert Bonniers förlag, Stockholm 1910. Originalupplagan. SAMMANBUNDEN MED: Folkefienden: tidspolitiska uppsatser av Per Hallström. Albert Bonniers förlag, Stockholm 1915. Originalupplagan. 8vo [12,8 x 18,8 cm]. (2), 331, (3) & (5), 8-96 sidor.

Draeger Imprimerie, Paris 1910 - A most unusual trade promotion fur catalogue, housed in a Japanisme leporello featuring five color illustrations. Closed, 28 by 13.5 cm. With four folds, forming ten panels. Three of the illustrations are double paneled, two are single, and the first panel has text, while onto the final panel is pasted an envelope which contains within a folded cover sheet and six cards, each with a tinted illustration of a woman wearing one of the company's furs. These cards, which are the real heart of the promotion, are each 23.5 by 11 cm. The Japanisme-inspired illustrations are not entirely irrelevant to the product on offer, as they tell the story of Prince Kararih who is seeking a special fur as a gift and goes out hunting to kill this ferocious beast to obtain it. The narrative is told in French verse captions. Back to the cards, they show soigne women in lavish creations designed by Leroy and Schmidt, who we can infer were top designers for Max Fourrures, but possibly not the only ones the company used. The illustrations are very much in keeping with the style of "Le Bon Ton" and other tony fashion publications of the teens, these, without the pochoir color. The whole production of this trade promotion was produced by Draeger, which brought a singular exquisite panache to the many commercial publications it did during the first half of the twentieth century. The outer cover sheet for the cards has foxing, and there is some light foxing, not much though, on the margins of the leporello paper. [Attributes: First Edition]

The mainly Louis XIV Style interiors created a stunning backdrop for the Sutherlands' impressive collection of paintings and objets d'art, much of which can still be seen in the house today."         Manifesti dei Musicisti Futuristi

Direzione del Movimento Futurista [1910], Milan - Single sheet folded once to make [4]pp. Soft horizontal fold to middle, else a nice example of this early Futurist manifesto, the first on music. The first musician to "surrender to the persuasion of promises and liberation", Pratella was courted early on by Marinetti to join his new movement that he hoped would breathe new life into Italian culture. Though not as nihilistic as Russolo's Art of Noises published three years later, he still makes what at the time, were revolutionary demands that musicians break from the traditional, proclaiming in a later manifesto that" the new order of disorder should be created by destroying the ancient schemes."
