Ombres Chinoises

(Paris: Saussine, c. 1910). (Paris: Saussine, c. 1910). This large and very colorful example of a French animated shadow theater, or Ombro-Cinéma, employs a sheet of acetate printed with vertical, black rules set into a chromolithographed wood and cardboard box to create the illusion of movement. A paper scroll printed with a panorama fits into the back of the box, and a wind-up clockwork mechanism with a music box unrolls the scroll so that the images pass by, behind the acetate. The black bars align with the illustrations as they move to animate the images. Scrolls for the theater are interchangeable. This set includes a color-printed roll presenting the tale of Puss in Boots, titled "Film No. 21, Le Chatte Botté," and also comes with an additional black & white scroll titled "Film No. 6, Carnival de Nice," depicting a parade of costumed people, fanciful floats, musicians and acrobats. The surrounding proscenium is brightly illustrated with theatrical red curtains, lanterns, kabuki masks, a geisha and a samurai set in a Japanese landscape. Housed in the original pink paper-covered box, which includes an enclosure for the additional scroll. The publisher's printed instructions, including a list of other scrolls available for the theater, is adhered inside the lid. Box measures 18 by 12 3/4 inches. A very fine example of this optical toy, rarely seen in such excellent, working condition.

        Golden Legend, The

New York: Hodder & Stoughton / George H. Doran Co., n.d. [1910]. First American trade edition. Quarto (9 5/8 x 7 in; 244 x 179 mm). viii, 153, [1] pp. Twenty-five tipped-in color plates with captioned tissue guards. Publisher's gilt- and blind-stamped cloth. An astonishing copy, very fine in the original glassine dust jacket (a bit of edgewear) and publisher's original box (archivally repaired at joints).British painter and art teacher Sidney Harold Meteyard (1808-1947) worked in stained glass, enamels and tempera, as a book illustrator and designer in the Pre-Raphaelite style of the Birmingham Group, and was further influenced by Edward Burne-Jones and the Arts and Crafts Movement.A lyric drama in verse, "the Golden Legend is a framework including a series of tableaux illustrative of life and manners, principally in Germany, at some period of the middle ages between the first and last crusade. The story by which these tableaux are connected is that a certain Prince Henry of Hoheneck, labouring under an apparently incurable disease, is informed by the doctors of Salerno that he may be cured by the blood of a maiden voluntarily giving her life for his. He is tempted by Lucifer, appearing to him under various disguises, to avail himself of the generosity of a village maiden named Elsie, the daughter of one of his tenants, with whom he takes refuge on being expelled by some not very intelligible priestly process from his castle and princedom on the Rhine. The pair travel together to Salerno, discourse on the various objects of interest they meet on their journey, and finally arrive at Salerno; where the Prince's selfishness gives way before a sudden impulse, and Elsie, becomes Princess of Hoheneck" (The Spectator, Jan. 3, 1852).

24 Original Character Studies from "The Pickwick Papers

, 1910. 1910. A Unique Volume of Original Dickens ArtworkBy The Artful "Kyd"KYD (pseudonym of Joseph Clayton Clarke), artist. [DICKENS, Charles]. 24 Original Character Studies from "The Pickwick Papers." Drawn in colors by 'Kyd' "Portsmouth" Series. [N.p.: n.d., ca. 1910].Manuscript title and twenty-four original pen, ink and watercolor drawings (each 11 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches; 286 x 223 mm.), each on fine laid paper with full backgrounds, ink ruled borders, and signed by the artist. Chemised in a quarter morocco clamshell case.Joseph Clayton Clark (1856-1937) worked as a freelance artist with a particular affection for Dickens, his Dickens illustrations first appearing in 1887 in Fleet Street Magazine, with two collections soon to follow: The Characters of Charles Dickens (1889) and Some Well Known Characters from the Works of Charles Dickens (1892). In the first decade of the twentieth century, five sets of postcards based on his Dickens drawings were published, and seven sets of non-Dickensian comic cards by him were issued. Beginning in the 1920s, he earned his living from watercolor sketches, mainly of Dickens' characters, which he sold to and through the London book trade. Frederic G. Kitton gives him early notice in his classic text, Dickens and His Illustrators (1890); Kyd's watercolors were at that date already being avidly bought by major Dickens collectors (Kitton, p. 233), the Cosens sale in 1890 successfully selling a collection of 241 of Kyd's Dickens watercolors, and Mr. Tom Wilson, at the time the foremost collector of Dickens, possessing 331 of Kyd's drawings. In 1910, the approximate date of the character studies under notice, the British Museum acquired a collection of 598 drawings and paintings of the artist's Dickens work, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, Dickens House in London, and the University of Texas at Austin each have significant collections of Kyd's Dickens illustrations."As a character 'Kyd' emulated those of Dickens and his own illustrations - slightly larger than life. In his style and dress he was mildly flamboyant for the period…He seldom varied his attire from a grey suit, spats, homburg hat, gloves and was never without a carnation or substitute flower in his button hole" (Sawyer, Richard. "Kyd" (Joseph Clayton Clark): A Preliminary Study of his Life and Work Together with an Essay on Fore-Edge Paintings, 1980. p. 7)."The vast majority of 'Kyd's' works offered for sale today are single character studies. Some of these are mistakenly taken for hand-colored lithographs…As a general rule, the lithographs are on inferior paper and do not possess ink ruled borders. Far more rare are character studies with backgrounds…" (Ibid., p. 8).A superb, singular and most desirable collection of Dickensiana. Unique and scarce. The characters from The Pickwick Papers that Kyd has so vividly brought to life are:No. 1. Mr. PickwickNo. 2. Mr. SnodgrassNo. 3. Mr. WinkleNo. 4. Mr. TupmanNo. 5. Golden Legend, The

, [1910] [1910]. A Pristine CopyLONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth. [METEYARD, Sidney N., illustrator]. The Golden Legend. With Illustrations by Sidney N. Meteyard. 3, 1852).
