        Mr. Churchill on the Peers

London: The Liberal Publications Department (in connection with the National Liberal Federation and the Liberal Central Association), 1910. 1st Edition. Paperback. Near fine. Here is the scarce first edition, only printing of Churchill's letter to his constituents of 14 November 1910. This letter addressed to Sir George Ritchie was published by the Liberal Publication Department as a single-sheet, double-sided "Leaflet No. 2358" on 18 November 1910, measuring 8 x 5.25 inches. In 1910 Winston Churchill was a young lion of the Liberal Party, vexing the British establishment and helping Lloyd George lay the foundations of the modern welfare state. Churchill's 14 November speech is in vehement opposition to the veto power of the House of Lords. This leaflet captures the young radical Churchill in full flower. "Was ever inequality more scandalous? Was ever injustice more glaring? All classes are to have votes; but only Tory votes are to count. WE CAN SUBMIT NO LONGER TO THIS USAGE. THIS IS OUR LAND AS MUCH AS IT IS THEIRS." The small number of original Churchill leaflets and pamphlets available to collectors from the Pre-WWI decade beginning in 1904 frequently owe their survival to the fact that they were bound in annual compilations by the Liberal Publication Department. This leaflet appears to have been disbound, but is in superlative condition - crisp and bright with no spotting or markings of any kind and with only slight wrinkling along the left edge. The leaflet is protected by a black hard case stamped in gilt on the front cover that completely enfolds the pamphlet within. The case is in perfect condition, with a previous owner bookplate on the inside front cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A33.1, Woods A18.

LOGOS. Internationale Zeitschrift für Philosophie der Kultur. Herausgegeben von Georg Mehlis (Band 1-12) und Richard Kroner (ab Band 3). Band 1-22 komplett.

Tübingen: Verlag von J. C. B. Mohr (Paul Siebeck) 1910-1933.. 22 Bände (= so vollständig). Gr. 8° (24 x 19 cm). - Band 15 leicht abweichend in Orig.-Leinen gebunden. - Ehemalige Bibliotheksexemplare; komplett eingeschlagen in selbstklebende transparente Buchbinderfolie. - Hogrebe, Periodica Philosophica 297. - Als komplettes Exemplar sehr selten.

        Frank Brangwyn and His Work

London - Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner and Co, 1910. London - Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner and Co, 1910 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of Shaw-Sparrow's examination of Anglo-Welsh artist Frank Brangwyn. With colour frontispiece and further plates depicting Brangwyn's work, twenty colour and sixteen collotype, all with tissue-guards. Includes a title vignette. Sir Frank William Brangwyn RA RWS RBA (12 May 1867 11 June 1956) was an Anglo-Welsh artist, painter, water colourist, virtuoso engraver and illustrator, and progressive designer. Frank Brangwyn received some artistic training, probably from his father, and later from Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo and in the workshops of William Morris, but he was largely an autodidact without a formal artistic education. Initially he painted traditional subjects about the sea and life on the seas. By the late 19th century Orientalism had become a favoured theme for many painters. Soon Brangwyn was attracted by the light and the bright colours of these southern countries. While Brangwyn produced over 80 poster designs during the First World War, he was not an official war artist. Brangwyn was an artistic jack-of-all-trades. As well as paintings and drawings, he produced designs for stained glass, furniture, ceramics, table glassware, buildings and interiors, was a lithographer and woodcutter and was an illustrator of books. Condition: In a half calf binding. Externally sound, smart spine, a little shelfwear and marks to the boards. Front hinge is strained. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean aside from somelight scattered spotting, and one or two small marginal tidemarks to the plates. Overall: VERY GOOD..

(29 Bände) The Encyclopedia Britannica. A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, Literature and General Information. Eleventh Edition. Handy Volume Issue.

New York; The Encyclopedia Britannica Company, 1910.. - KOMPLETT ; A - Z / Mit sehr sehr zahlreichen Abbildungen / Plänen / Karten u.a. - "Dedicated by Permission to His Majesty George the Fifth King of Great Britain and Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas Emperor of India / and to William Howard Taft President of the United States of America". - The economic and mechanical obstacles to the production of a great encyclopaedia otherwise than in a series of volumes separately issued at intervals during a number of years were formerly considered prohibitive: Thus the Ninth Edition, the first volume of which was published in 1875 and the twenty-fifth in 1889, was incomplete for some sixteen years after its real inception. Not only does such a long interval between the start and the finish involve the possibility of a change in editorial direction and conception such as happened in 1881 when Spencer Baynes was compelled by ill-health to hand wer the reins to Robertson Smith; but even if the same editorial policy remained to dominate the work, the continual progress of time was constantly change in the conditions under which it was exercised. With such a system of publication an; encyclopaedia can have no proper unity of conception or uniformity of treatment. It cannot be planned from the beginning so as to present at its completion a satisfactory synoptic view of any department of knowledge. The historical record is restricted by the accident of the dates at which the separate volumes are published, in such a way that the facts included in one volume may contradict those in another. Individual volumes, the contents of which are arbitrarily determined by the alphabetical order of headings, may indeed be abreast of the learning and accomplishments of their day, but each time a later volume appears the circumstances have altered, and there is every chance that some integral portion of what had previously been published may be different dates stultified. Those who were responsible for the execution of the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopedia Brilannica did their best under an impossible system. They made it a collection of detached monographs of the highest authority and value. In their day the demand of a modern public for "up-to-dateness" had not come into existence, and it seemed perfectly reasonable in 1879 to bring the article on the history of England no further than the accession of Queen Victoria. But it was not their failure to appreciate the importance of dealing with the latest events in history that made so much of the Ninth Edition useless in preparing its successor. When only this was in question, later history could be added. It was the fact that, owing to its system of publication, its arrangement was not encyclopaedic, and that in preparing an edition which for the first time had the advantage of being systematic in the distribution of its material, there was no way of adapting, to its needs what had been written originally on a faulty principle. The Sum of Human Knowledge).
