Fine Private Album relating to the Chinese Maritime Customs Service - Peking, Hong Kong, and Manchuria - 1910-3

1910-3. Landscape quarto album (267 × 360 mm) Deep tan half morocco on oatmeal buckram boards, gilt rules to spine and spine and corner edges, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. 266 original sepia photographs (the majority 108 × 65 mm, and vice versa mounted on 27 dun card leaves, full y captioned in white ink. A little rubbed on the joints, but very good, the photographs largely mid to dark toned, overall very good. A highly interesting personal album containing over 250 good quality original photographs of the life of the European diplomatic and administrative community in China around the turn of the century. Unfortunately the identity of the photographer, as so often, remains a mystery, but the album is fully captioned throughout giving names, including a number of prominent figures, and locations. From the concentration of identified individuals around the Chinese Maritime Customs service, it is clear that the mystery compiler was either personally involved, or was a relative of an officer in the service, and from the timespan of the album and the evidence of a "leave" period in England, most likely the former. The album relates to a time when the plans of the recently retired Inspector-General Sir Robert Hart's of the CMC were coming fully into effect; "Hart's lasting contribution would be the foreign inspectorate of the CMC, a model of an empire-wide organization, centralized in Peking, administered efficiently and honestly, which The Times rightly declared 'one of the most striking monuments ever produced by the genius and labour of any individual Englishman' … He built lighthouses, made harbour and waterways improvements, and initiated a statistical service, the collection of medical and scientific data, and participation in international exhibitions … When Hart became inspector-general in 1863 the CMC was operating in seven open ports; in 1907 it was operating in 57, and 76 native customs stations were under his administration or guidance. Hart presided over the servicing of 182 lights, various other navigational aids, and 2800 post offices … China's trade had increased from 1863's £38.9 million to £111.7 million, and customs revenue from £2.3 million to £3.3 million, a formidable contribution to the revenues of the Chinese empire" (ODNB). This was also a time when China was suffering the turmoil consequent on the nationalist democratic revolutions of 1911 and 1912, circumstances greeted by one of the dramatis personae of the album, the Hong Kong doctor, Dalmahoy Allan, in breathless terms; "The Rebellion is spreading like wildfire. Last night the streets were pandemonium, because news had arrived by Chinese sources that Pekin had fallen … Canton won't be long now, and I think the Manchus will make a stern fight for it. They have threatened to burn the whole of that huge rabbit-warren of a city to the ground, and they can do it. I hope to go up there next week, as I believe, with the present exit going on, silks, etc., ought to be going cheap. If you don't hear from me next week, you will know that I have got held up there. I think it would be splendid if the Revolution started while I was there!" (D.F., James Cyril Dalmahoy Allan: A Memoir). There is little sign of disruption, emigrants do appear in the Manchurian segment of the album, but it does provide an interesting context for this visual record, and perhaps was part of the rationale behind the "tour". The images are essentially arranged in five main groups, each relating to a particular location; Peking, 1910; Hong Kong 1911; a shooting trip in South China, Christmas 1911-2; the voyage home, 1912; Shanghai, Mukden and Manchuria, 1913. The first grouping of 40 images is set in and around Peking, featuring locations such as the Tartar City; the pagoda at the Old Summer Palace, Yu Chuan Shan; the Big Bell Temple; and various tombs around the City. Among the group visiting the Big Bell Temple are M. Barbier, of Barbier, Bénard, Turenne, Sir Robert Hart's favoured supplier of lighthouses; Mlle. Korostovetz, daughter of the Russian Minister to Peking; Mrs. Bowra, the wife of the Chief Secretary in Peking, Cecil Arthur Verner Bowra; and from the CMC Alexander Henderson Forbes, an Assistant Commissioner at Chinkiang, and one Parkes, probably a nephew of Sir Harry Parkes, late British Minister in China and Japan. The sequence of 35 photographs of Hong Kong opens with some excellent views from the Peak, the entrance to the Harbour, Kowloon Station and Observatory, British naval craft in the harbour, several images of a frontier station and and the Commissioner's bungalow. The trip to HK was evidently by way of a holiday, and the group are shown swimming at Kowloon Tsai and playing croquet at Deepwater Bay. Among those in the party are Charles Bulmer Johnson, a solicitor in the Supreme Court of Hong Kong, Leslie Sandercock, an Assistant Inspector CMC, and William Shenton, later Sir William, an influential voice on the Legislative and Executive Councils of Hong Kong for nearly thirty years. The sojourn in HK was evidently a halt en route to a shooting trip in South China over Christmas/New Year, 1911-2, which is chronicled in a series of 43 images. Many picturesque views, steam yachts on the lagoon, and native vessels on the river including "Pirate Junks", the Governor's yacht, "Pineapple Bunds", paddy fields, the glassworks at Pakshawn; together with the usual guns, bearers, and trophies. The party includes two Hong Kong doctors, Gerard Fitzwilliams, and J.C. Dalmahoy Allan who was lecturer in Pathology at the School of Medicine. The anonymous photographer briefly returned to Britain in 1913, a voyage tracked by 43 images from Singapore, Penang, and Colombo, via the Canal to Heckington in Lincolnshire, and Woodbury Common in Devon, in which locations there may be some potential clue as to the compiler's identity. The Chinese sequence re-opens in Shanghai with 7 photographs which feature the enigmatic Eric A Sykes, arms expert, martial artist, and perhaps spy. Sykes first arrived in Shanghai in 1907 as a representative for the import-export company Reiss & Co., later becoming the China and Japan representative for Remington and Colt, and an expert instructor for the Shanghai Municipal Police. The scene then shifts to Mukden, with a sequence of 41 images opening with a portrait of the Commissioner R.B. Moorhead and his daughter, and followed by a superb collection of shots of the streets, shops, various "types" - blind musician, Manchu woman, 3 teachers, a blacksmith - and including 10 well-composed views of the Mausolea at Pei-ling. The tour then takes in the surrounding "Manchurian Country" in 52 exposures, a similar mixture as before - a barber, the "China Mender", beggars &c. - but several of emigrants carrying their worldly possessions in baskets and barrows. The final images in the album being of Foochow, and including "Sunday at the Commissioners" and the "Assistants' Mess at Foochow". In all, an extremely intriguing collection of images taken at pivotal moment in Chinese history.

The People's Rights Selected from his Lancashire and other Recent Speeches.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1910 - Octavo. Original pictorial "vivid orange yellow" (Cohen) wrappers printed in greyish green and black. Housed in a black cloth solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Wraps a little rubbed and soiled, some chips from the corners, a few minor edge-splits, spine a little sunned and creased, but near complete, no loss of text from the wraps, text-block typically browned, remains a very good copy. First edition, first general paper wrappers issue, first state, with index, and just a single appendix; and p. 71 - section title for "The People's Trade" - misnumbered 1. "All issues of The People's Rights are extremely scarce" (Cohen) despite a print run of 40,000, this largely due to the low quality of the materials, and the cheap and clumsy method of production, and despite the apparent catalogue of faults above, this is in fact an unusually well-preserved copy.         Charleville-Verdun (Al. & Ret: 240 km). Record du voyage en France. Roger Sommer sur son biplan SOMMER muni du moteur GNOME 20 Mai 1910

Paris.: Mabileau & Co.. 1910.. Color lithograph with pochoir (stencil) handcolor, image approximately 15 x 29 inches on sheet 17 3/4 x 35 1/2 inches. Discoloration to lower left corner of sheet (outside image area); thin line of light toning to left upper edge; a few light foxing spots; couple of tiny edge tears to upper edge; clean and bright. 'Gamy' is thought to be a pseudonym of Marguerite Montaut, the wife of the French poster artist Ernest Montaut, who died in 1909 at the age of 31. Ernest Montaut and, after his death, his wife, produced posters whose subject matter reflects the era's fascination with speed, on land and in the air. The posters were elaborately produced employing a combination of color lithography and handcoloring using the pochoir (stencil) process. This image, of a biplane flying low over a flat riverscape with speeding auto below, commemorates the record for flying distance in France set by Roger Sommer on his biplane. .

        QUANTRILL AND THE BORDER WARS

The Torch Press, Publishers, 1910., 1910. First edition. Cloth, 539 pp., + 2 page errata at end. Numerous illustraions and maps, index. An outstanding study of William Clarke Quantrill and the famous "Border Wars" in Kansas and Missouri in the 1860's. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Quantrill joined the Confederacy and fought at Lexington, Missouri. Preferring guerilla tactics, he organized his own gang of southern sympathizers. Although he failed to receive any Confederate endorsement or direct support, he and his men raided communities supposed to have Union sympathizers and robbed mail coaches. They frequently murdered citizens who were suspected as Union sympathizers. In 1862, Quantrill and his gang were declared outlaws by Union officials. Quantrill helped Confederate troops capture Independence, Missouri in August, 1862. A year later Quantrill, with 300 men plus another 150 men who were loosely allied to him descended on Lawrence, Kansas, burning much of the city down and killing nearly 150 citizens. A few weeks later, after defeating a small group of Federal soldiers at Baxter Springs, Kansas, Quantrill put the Federal prisoners to death. Quantrill was finally mortally wounded in 1865 by Federal troops during a raid into Kentucky in which he led only 33 men. Many later outlaws rode with Quantrill during those violent years. Frank James, Jesse James, Cole Younger, and other noted outlaws are among them. Fine, bright, copy. The rare dust jacket has some chipping to edges, a few short closed tears, and some light general soiling, yet still attractive and nearly complete.

        The People's Rights

Hodder and Stoughton, London 1910 - This is the first edition, first state of this striking, scarce, and fragile early collection of Churchill's speeches. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. In 1910, when The People's Rights was published, Winston Churchill was a powerful political force and a member of the Cabinet. From December 3-11, 1909 Churchill was on the campaign trail on behalf of the Liberals. The People's Rights is a distillation of these nine days of speeches, criticizing the House of Lords (which had rejected the Liberal Government's budget, thus precipitating the campaign) and championing Free Trade, a graduated income tax, luxury tax, and surtaxes on unearned income. Churchill's efforts were not wasted; as a result of the election, the Liberals would achieve a slim majority and passage of their budget. The People's Rights was published in an exceptionally perishable form, in bright yellow-orange paper wraps (with a halftone photo of Churchill on the cover) and printed on cheap, pulp paper. Consequently few copies survive, and wear, losses, and general deterioration are common to those copies that endure. There are two states of this first and only printing. The first state features an Appendix and an Index (at pages 149-152), while the second replaces the Index with a second Appendix. Here is the desirable first edition, first state. Given the inherent fragility of the edition, this copy is in quite respectable condition, about very good minus for the edition with some of the typical aging and wear, but substantially complete nonetheless. The covers remain attached, the front cover firmly, the rear holding despite a 5.5 inch separation at the rear hinge. The color, which understandably often dulls, remains fairly bright on both covers, somewhat toned on the spine. The spine is more complete than many copies we see, with the usual wrinkling from the binding process, but with nearly all of the spine print intact despite modest overall chipping. Both covers show only minor chipping to the edges, with the illustrated front cover notably complete. The contents are browned and brittle as usual. We note no previous ownership marks and light spotting appears confined to the half title. There are modest triangular losses to the lower corners of the half title and title pages and some small edge chips to the Appendix and Index pages.         Mission Santa Clara de Asis

[c. 1910]. Photograph (202 × 398 mm). Ink stamp of the Santa Barbara Free Public Library, red pen mark, and Haines blind stamp to verso. A few small marks. Excellent condition. One of a series of photos taken by William Amos Haines (1877–1953), who travelled through the United States in the first decades of the 20th century making early panoramas with a rotating Kodak Cirkut camera. He was particularly interested in California's Spanish missions, and took photographs of a number of these sites around 1910. Mission Santa Clara de Asis was founded in 1877 and is now part of the campus of Santa Clara University. The facade depicted in this photo was destroyed by a fire in 1926 and the mission was rebuilt to conform with an earlier, one-tower adobe structure.

        Les Acacias

Paris, 1910. Folio Folder with Paper Pastedown. Very Good. Spectacular color frieze capturing the "Proustian" Beau Monde parading on an exclusive promenade in the Bois de Boulogne, n.d., circa 1910. Folio. 53 by 36 cm. Inscribed, on front cover, by Sem to Michel Manzi (1849-1915), an art dealer and friend of Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec. Six panels, each 36 by 104 cm, which were intended originally to be assembled into a single panorama. The printing process is a pochoir using lithographed outlines. The Allee des Acacias was a true Fin-de-Siecle phenomenon. At 11 A.M. and again 3 in the afternoon, when members of the bourgeoisie had to answer to the prosaic call of the workplace, the leisure class took to riding their horses and carriages, phaetons and cabriolets -- and later horseless carriages, aka automobiles -- along this straight bridle path through the Bois du Boulogne. Sem was caricaturing real members of high society, most notably, perhaps, the Comte de Castellane (Paul Ernest Boniface de Castellane, better known at the time simply as "Boni"), who was the husband of the homely American heiress, Anna Gould, daughter of Robber Baron financier Jay Gould. Boni was at the pinnacle of the smart set in Paris, in no small part thanks to his wife's millions, and this made him a favorite subject of Sem. However, after he burnt through ten million dollars of her inheritance, she filed for divorce, which was granted in 1906. (After which, Boni litigated for many years in the Vatican canon court to have the marriage annulled, ultimately to no avail.) Here we see the haughty Boni, post-divorce, with his trademark mole, effete yet perhaps humbled. There is Gabrielle Rejane (1856-1920), actress and rival of Sarah Bernhardt, who was the model of the character Berma in Proust's "A la Recherche du Temps Perdu"; Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873-1932), a Brazilian heir and pioneer aviator -- the world's first feasible dirigible -- and at the time depicted, among the most famous men in the world; Louise Balthy (1865-1925), a cafe singer and entertainer; Leopold II (1835-1909), King of the Belgians and the ruthless colonizer of the Congo; Prince Ivan Troubetzskoy; Caran d'Ache (1858-1909), pseudonym for Emmanuel Poire, a French satirist and cartoonist; the artist Rita del Erido, nee Margaretha Liebmann, circus equestrian and Spanish comic before marrying Henri Duvernois, a French novelist, playwright and later screenwriter; the obese Prince Orloff, scion of Russian nobility (an ancestor a famous regicide); Fernando Leon y Castillo (1842-1918), a Spanish politician; the Marquis du Lau; the Comte A. de Guitart; The Duc de Brissac; the Col. de Sancy; M. le Harivel; the Marquis de Pracomtal; the Marquis de St. Sauver; the Comte d'Hinnisdel; M. Brinquant; Mme. d'Orville; the marquis de Dion; Comte Lindemann; Mrs. Hensman and Baron Lacaze. Of all the figures in the frieze, only the dog, by the side of a black chauffeur, looks out at us, with a knowing grin, it would also appear. And then, on the last panel, passing is a mail coach chock-a-block with gawkers at the whole spectacle, a precursor of the celebrity home tour bus that plies the streets of Beverly Hills. Light wear; generally clean. Folio with minor repair to joint extremities.

Photograph of the Original Grave of King William Barak of the Yarra Yarra tribe in Coranderrk

Coranderrk, near Healesville, Victoria: circa 1910-, 1920. Black & white photograph, 80 x 106mm., typescript caption to reverse 'Grave of King William Barrak, Yarra Yarra tribe, Coranderrk. "A Quiet, Good Christian."'. William Barak's original headstone at Coranderrk. Rare photograph of the original gravestone of Aboriginal elder William Barak from the cemetery at Coranderrk station. Barak's grave was replaced with Anne Fraser Bon's more elaborate memorial in 1955, making this an important relic and a significant footnote to our understanding of the history of Coranderrk. William Barak (circa 1824-1903) was the last chief of the Yarra Yarra tribe and one of the most prominent Victorian Aborigines of the nineteenth century. As a youth he personally witnessed the "purchase" of Melbourne by William Buckley and John Batman in 1835. Barak played a number of diverse roles throughout his life, particularly as a tribal leader and negotiator, but he was also an accomplished artist who readily embraced Western paints and materials. Moreover, he was a central source of information on traditional Aboriginal society for scholars and anthropologists: for example, significant sections of Alfred Howitt's Native Tribes of South-East Australia (1904) are derived from interviews with Barak held in Bairnsdale in 1882. He won widespread respect for both his Christian faith and vast knowledge of traditional lore. This photograph was taken at Coranderrk, the aboriginal station near Healesville to which Barak and a small group of his people moved soon after it was established in 1863. Poor living conditions at the camp and pressure from surrounding graziers led to an inquiry by the Board of Protection of Aborigines in 1882. Barak was instrumental in defending the interests of his people and quickly won respect as a patient and fair negotiator with a soft yet persuasive voice. During this time he came into frequent contact with the long-lived Anne Fraser Bon, owner of a nearby station and a keen advocate of Aboriginal rights at Corranderrk. William Barak passed away on 15 August 1903. He was buried in a simple grave at the Corranderrk cemetery, as photographed here, amongst well over 100 fellow Aborigines who had lived on the station. In 1934 Anne Fraser Bon paid for an impressive monument to Barak that was erected in the main street of Healesville; sadly this monument was vandalised and removed from public view while the cemetery itself fell into disrepair. In 1952 the Melbourne Bread and Cheese Club organised a clean-up of the grounds with the help of local Aboriginal descendents and arranged for Mrs Bon's monument to William Barak to be cleaned and placed on his grave, where it remains to this day. Given the nature of the detailed typed caption to the rear of the photograph, with its distinctive purple tone, it is possible that this image was taken by a Government photographer. However, a similar image of Barak's grave, now held in the State Library of Victoria, is noted as being taken by Morwell Hodges of Healesville. The typed note includes the phrase "A Quiet, Good Christian", the central phrase of the lettering on the headstone.
