        The Good Puss

[n.p.]: , c.1910. - Felonies Against Felines Afoot?WAIN, Louis. "The Good Puss." [N.d., ca. 1910]. Chromolithograph. Image size: 15 1/2 x 24 inches; 390 x 600 mm. Slight cockling, mounted to the image, title cartouche to lower right, framed and glazed.A delightful Wain chromolithograph depicting a pubescent cat in red bow tie, proudly holding a fork in his right hand with an impaled mouse on it, being walked by his father to "Dame Tibby's School," accompanied by nine adolescent cats of dubious class, character or attitude.Providing a dark edge to an otherwise playful image is a small sign at the entrance to Mrs. Tibby's which reads: "Cat's Meat Men Please Ring Here," suggesting that the cats enrolled at Mrs. Tibby's entered the front door as students and left through the back door as sausage: Mrs. Tibby as Sweeney Tabby, the Demon Barbara of Feline Street. As such, an unusual example of mordant humor from the tormented cat artist whose developing mental instability would cloud the sunshine of his subject matter.

        Animal Frolics

1910. first edition. A Very Scarce Early Louis Wain with Four Marvelous Full-Color PlatesWAIN, Louis. Animal Frolics. London: John F. Shaw & Co. Ltd., [1910]. First edition. Original gray cloth spine, decorated gray card wrappers with a copy of the color frontispiece mounted on the front cover. Small light stain to lower edge of rear board, just touching margin of last text leaf, otherwise a remarkable and near fine copy of this very scarce Louis Wain title. An unusual Louis Wain book with four color plates of Cats and Dogs and many black and white drawings of Bears, Lions, A Duck, An Elephant and a 'fishy' Hippo! We have never seen this title before. At the end of the nineteenth century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist who went mad, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. “He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves” (H.G. Wells).“From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled…although he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well-known!” (Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914).Rodney Dale only records the later Collins edition of 1919.

The equation of state for gases and liquids.] Autograph manuscript in German of his Nobel Lecture

1910 - Autograph Manuscript of van der Waals's Nobel LectureWaals, Johannes Diderik van der (1837-1923). [The equation of state for gases and liquids.] Autograph manuscript in German, written in ink with ink and pencil emendations; marked for use as printer's copy. 24ff. 210 x 171 mm. Light toning, small marginal dampstain on last leaf, left margins a bit frayed minimally affecting text, but very good. Original Manuscript of van der Waals's Nobel lecture, delivered in December 1910. ). Holograph manuscripts of Nobel lectures are very rare, and this is an exceptionally early example from a major figure in the history of modern physics. Van der Waals was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics that year for his work on the equation of state of gases and liquids, in particular for the "van der Waals equation" approximating the behavior of real fluids, introduced in his classic 1873 dissertation on the continuity of gaseous and liquid states.Van der Waals' idea of continuity was that there is no essential difference between gaseous and liquid states of matter, although one must consider other factors in addition to motion of the molecules in the determination of pressure. The important factors are the attraction between particles and their proper volume. . . . From these considerations van der Waals arrived at the equation p + a/v2 ) (v-b) = RT where a expresses the mutual attraction of the molecules, and b is their volume. . . . Other experimenters have suggested different models and equations of state, but van der Walls's model is probably the most useful because it emphasizes the essential features of molecules that determine liquidity, without introducing too many 'realistic' complications. . . . An important practical application of the theory is the prediction of conditions necessary for the liquefaction of a gas; this was an important guide in the liquefaction of the 'permanent' gases" (Weber, Pioneers of Science, p. 41; see also p. 40). In his Nobel lecture van der Waals summarized his life's work on equation of state theory, describing how he had come to formulate the van der Waals equation and the equation's experimental corroboration by Sydney Young, an event that had given van der Waals "great joy." "The laureate went on to detail his most recent work, which he termed 'pseudo association' (the 'van der Waals force') to distinguish it from chemical bonding. The only way to achieve agreement between the equation of state and laboratory data, he maintained, was to postulate the existence of large complexes of molecules, especially in liquids. . . . In the conclusion to his address, van der Waals said, 'In all my studies I was quite convinced of the real existence of molecules . . . I never regarded them as a figment of my imagination, nor even as mere centers of force effects.' He noted that 'the real existence of molecules is universally assumed by physicists,' and that his theory 'may have been a contributing factor" (Magill, The Nobel Prize Winners: Physics, pp. 150-51.         [Ephemera] Box containing 94 unusual illustrated arithmetic cards

Edinburgh: Thomas Laurie. A most unusual collection of 94 arithmetic cards, the overwhelming majority of which also feature a charming vignette, two or three of a piece of turn-of-the-century material culture, garment or young woman. The cards were created as math drills or exercises by the publisher, Thomas Laurie of Edinburgh, which specialized in educational material and textbooks, and as with most ephemera, the sweet imagery and charm of the material probably did not excite its initial users in the least, who would have regarded these cards as entirely an utilitarian learning tool. Their indifference, of course, doomed most of the sets of these cards to the dustbin and thus what we have now is surely very scarce. While it is likely there were a few additional cards, based on the size of the box the cards came in, this set is close to full, and one will not have a sense of incompleteness with these cards, which are plentiful. The cards today should be valued for their decorativeness, for being a relic and survivor from an earlier educational era, and for their rareness. The cube-shaped box housing them is itself substantial and an object of beauty and interest. The box is close to 12 inches on each side, and the top lid is now hinged, although it was originally not so. (The hinges are themselves obviously old.) To open the box one pulls out a narrow pinned board, and this too should delight. As to dating, there is no date given, but based on the illustrations, circa 1910. The labels on the inside lid would suggest an earlier date, but these labels may predate the set of cards housed in the box. The cards themselves are generally 6.5 by 4.5 inches, or 16 by 12 cm, and each has the text and illustration, both on a slab of what looks almost like paper mache, mounted onto wood board. The "paper mache", or whatever the material is, has some light soiling here and there, heavier on a few cards, with most being lightly touched.

Atlas City of Toronto Plate 102 [St. Clair Ave.,Yonge St. & Eglinton Ave.]

      c. 1910, Toronto - Map of Toronto at the intersection of Yonge st. and Eglinton Ave. with Lawrence Ave. to the North, the Don River to the East, St. Clair and Moore Park to the South and Bathurst St. to the West. English railway engineer, went to Canada in 1868, where he did not pursue engineering, but became a representative for the Sanborn Company which published fire insurance plans. From 1875 Goad began to compile and publish his own large-scale plans of Canadian towns from a base in Montreal, and soon became the largest private mapmaker in Canada. By 1885 Charles Goad had returned to Britain and established a branch in London. Goad?s highly detailed plans included information on property holdings, building construction, use and contents, and, like Sanborn?s, functioned as Fire Insurance Plans. Once leased to an insurance company the map volumes were regularly updated by a team of workers who over-pasted sections with new information onto the existing maps, some of them building up to many layers. Goad?s business rapidly expanded to cover the cities and industrial areas of Britain, Denmark, France, Egypt, Turkey, Venezuela, Bermuda, Mexico and South Africa. After his death the company was run by his three sons. Copyrights and assets of the Canadian branch of the company were sold to The Underwriter?s Survey Bureau in 1931., Size : 457x707 (mm), 18x27.875 (Inches), Printed in Color, 0 Very Good; fold strengthened; corrections pasted to the map (corrections were mailed to subscribers so they could glue/paste them on the appropriate areas of the affected maps)

RHINEGOLD AND THE VALKYRIE. Translated by Margaret Armour

London William Heinemann 1910 - First edition, this copy with tipped-in card SIGNED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM, and with the one page printed announcement for the 1910 Arthur Rackham Exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in London which featured many of the original paintings for the Rhinegold and other subjects, plus an engraved four page (single leaf folded) prospectus from Heinemann for gift books of 1910. With 34 very impressive colour-plates by Arthur Rackham, representing some of his best and most adult work, the plates are tipped in onto stiff paper and feature captioned tissue guards. 4to, publisher’s original light brown buckram lettered and decorated in gilt on the upper cover and the spine. ix, 161 pp. + plates. A beautiful copy, the plates all pristine and perfect, the text fresh and clean and solid, the binding bright and fresh with just a hint of mellowing to the spine. A very pleasing copy. A VERY HANDSOME AND BRIGHT COPY OF THIS BEAUTIFUL WORK, WITH A TIPPED IN SIGNATURE CARD FROM ILLUSTRATOR ARTHUR RACKHAM AND WITH ADDITIONAL INTERESTING AND RELATED EPHEMERA. It is obvious at first glance that Rackham was deeply and personally inspired by Wagner’s great mythic theme. His illustrations emerge from each page with dramatic force and stirring emotion. The Rhinegold illustrations were a grand achievement in the continuing evolution of the artist’s style. Unlike many of his other books, his Wagnerian illustrations were not geared to a child audience. He wrote to a twelve year old fan, "I am very glad you like my illustrations. I am rather afraid that the books of mine that are coming out this year and next, which illustrate Wagner’s great Music-stories, the ‘Ring of the Nibelungs’, are not very well suited for those lucky people who haven’t yet finished the delightful adventure of growing up, but soon, perhaps, you will know and be fond of Wagner’s music and writings, and then you may like these drawings of mine as well as the others." -from Derek Hudson.         The Digressions of V: Written for His Own Fun and that of his Friends (Two Volumes)

Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston and NY 1910 - First, limited edition, signed and numbered by Vedder. This is Number 333 of only 525. Bound in publisher's full vellum, gilt lettering on spine, intricate embossed blue and gilt decoration and borders on covers, T.e.g., fore-edge deckle. Profusely illustrated with over a hundred etchings, engravings, gravures, drawings and photographs, all beautifully reproduced and printed on Japan vellum, some tissue-protected, some tipped-in, and a special original drawing made especially by Vedder for this edition, of which only 525 were printed and then the plate destroyed. In addition to Vedder's signature on the limitation page, this copy has an original four-line holograph poem signed by Vedder in Rome on April 14, 1911. Designed by Bruce Rogers. Elihu Vedder (1836 – 1923) was an American symbolist painter, book illustrator, and poet, born in New York City. He is best known for his fifty-five illustrations for Edward FitzGerald's translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (deluxe edition, 1884, published by Houghton Mifflin). Vedder had a home in Rome and - after the financial success of his 1884 Rubaiyat work - on the Isle of Capri, then a haven for male aesthetes. He decorated the hallway of the Reading Room of the Washington Library of Congress, and his mural paintings can still be seen there. In 2008, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington organized an exhibition of Vedder's Rubaiyat illustrations that toured several museums, including the Phoenix Art Museum. Vedder describes this book as "containing the quaint legends of his infancy, an account of his stay in Florence, the garden of lost opportunities, return home on the track of Columbus, his struggle in New York in war-time coinciding with that of the nation, his prolonged stay in Rome, and likewise his prattlings upon art, tamperings with literature, struggles with verse, and many other things, being a portrait of himself from youth to age. With many illustrations by the author." . Boards lightly soiled, minor shelf-wear. Bindings and hinges tight and strong, all contents clean and unmarked. An extremely nice copy of this handsome and scarce edition. NEAR FINE. . 4to 11" - 13" tall. xxi, 249; vi, 272 pp. Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
