        My African Journey

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1910. Paperback. This is the 1910 vintage pulp paperback, the so-called "First Cheap Edition." My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. In 1910, two years after the first edition, the publisher issued a so-called "First Cheap Edition" produced in vintage "pulp" style. The text is arranged in a 92-page, two-column format with a few pages of advertisements at either end. This handsome paperback edition features a color illustration on the front cover similar to that of the first edition, with Churchill in pith helmet with binoculars around his neck and a rifle in his hands standing beside a dead white rhinoceros. Some 20,000 copies were produced, but given the fragility of the edition, very few survive today. And those that do are usually in poor condition - befitting a cheap paperback more than a century old. This copy is far from fine, but nonethless quite respectable given the age and inherent fragility of the edition. The covers remain firmly attached with some creasing and minor loss confined to the corners. The spine is substantially complete, with only a .5 inch loss at the head and .25 inch loss at the tail, leaving all spine lettering intact except for the "M" in the title. There is a horizontal closed tear spanning the spine and a short distance adjacent on both covers between "Hon." and "Winston". The contents are age-toned, as is ineveitable given the pulp paper, with minor loss to the corners of the first few pages, but otherwise clean, with no spotting or previous owner names.         On the Determination of the Tension of a recently formed Water-Surface.

Harrison and Sons], [London 1910 - Presentation offprint, inscribed in Bohr’s hand to the chemist Einar Biilmann, of the ‘Second Royal Society Paper’ – what Bohr "learned by working in this field may have been a help to him when, more than a quarter of a century later, he showed that some of the properties of atomic nuclei can be understood by comparing them to liquid drops [i.e., Bohr’s liquid-drop model]." (J. Rud Nielsen). In February 1905 the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters announced a prize concerning Lord Rayleigh’s 1879 theory that the surface tension of liquids could be determined from the surface vibrations of liquid jets. The problem proposed by the Academy was to perform quantitative experiments to implement Rayleigh’s method. Bohr faced formidable difficulties, not least the fact that, since the university had no physics laboratory, Bohr had to perform the experiments at night (to avoid perturbations due to passing traffic) in his father’s physiology laboratory. Bohr’s paper was submitted on the deadline of 30 October 1906, and on 23 February 1907 the Academy notified Bohr that he had won its gold medal. "After receiving the gold medal, Bohr carried out additional measurements of the surface tension of water. At the same time he was occupied with the considerable task of preparing his work for publication. In the latter part of 1908 he submitted a paper entitled ‘Determination of the Surface-Tension of Water by the Method of Jet Vibration’ to the Royal Society of London. This paper is not a simple translation of the prize essay but deviates from the latter at a number of points "In 1910, while Bohr was working on his doctor’s dissertation, a paper was published by P. Lenard, in which he claimed that a recently formed water surface has a high surface tension which rapidly decreases. Lenard stated that this was in agreement with Bohr’s results. This led Bohr to re-examine the matter and, in particular, to test by new calculations the claim made by Lenard that a variation of the velocity over the different concentric parts of a jet will prolong the periods of vibration and increase the wavelengths of surface waves on the jet. He made a direct calculation of the wavelength when the velocity in the jet varies with the distance from the axis and concluded that his experiments do not support the claims made by Lenard. In August, 1910, he submitted to the Royal Society a paper entitled ‘On the Determination of the Tension in a recently formed Water-Surface [i.e, the offered paper], which was published in its Proceedings. This was Bohr’s last work on surface tension. The results of this paper, and the merit of the experimental method described, have apparently been appreciated by most later workers in the field. Thus, N. K. Adam writes in his book The physics and chemistry of surfaces ‘Bohr’s work on oscillating jets is probably the best of any dynamic methods.’ "What he learned by working in this field may have been a help to him when, more than a quarter of a century later, he showed that some of the properties of atomic nuclei can be understood by comparing them to liquid drops [i.e., Bohr’s liquid-drop model]." (J. Rud Nielsen, Collected Works, pp. 8-12). Large 8vo (254 x 176 mm), offprint from the Proceedings of the Royal Society, A, Vol. 84, 1910, pp. [395] 396-403 [404:blank], original light brown printed wrappers, inscribed in Bohr's hand to the upper right corner of front wrapper: 'Hr Professor E. Biilmann / ærbødisgst fra Forf.' (i.e., Mr. Professor E. Biilmann / respectfully from the author), Prof. Einar Biilmann (1873-1946) was a Danish chemist and early friend of Bohr, number in blue pencil to upper right corner of front wrapper (probably a library numbering from Biilmann).         Framed Autographed Letter Signed on rare letterhead

Chicago, 1910. unbound. 1 page on ornate "Ringling Brothers - Worlds Greatest Shows" letterhead, 11 x 8.5 inches, Chicago, March 12, 1910. Beautifully presented in a cream-colored matte and brown and gold frame measuring 15.5 x 13.5 inches. Written to the traffic manager of the St. Louis Railroad, in part: "...I beg to advise that Ringling Bros. Circus will exhibit in St. Louis the week of May 2nd. Will arrive at East St. Louis on the Big Four about one A.M. May 1st, and will want to be delivered to the Big Four loaded again about midnight May 7th at East St. Louis...Our equipment is as follows: 14 coaches, six box, 20 stock, 40 flats, and advertising cars Nos. 1, 2 and 3 and business car Wisconsin. I will be greatly obliged if you will send me the contracts for this movement at your earliest convenience." Note: this rare variety ornate letterhead was first used by the Ringling Brothers in 1909 and featured the images of brothers Al, Otto, Henry, Charles, and John. Upon the death of Otto Ringling at his 5th Avenue mansion in 1911, a new letterhead was commissioned. John Ringling is most desirable in letters that feature circus content of which only a few have entered the market in the past 20 years. In this case, due to the enormity of his circus, John Ringling needed to lease an astonishing 84 railroad cars from the St. Louis Terminal which was, without doubt, the biggest single expense of the circus. He solved this problem in 1919 by purchasing The St. Louis & Hannibal Railroad for $325,000 and hiring Mr. John Lewis Penney as his Traffic Manager, to whom this letter is addressed. Because this letterhead was printed on wood pulp paper, it was necessary to reinforce it by mounting it to another sheet in order to prevent further chipping and fraying at the margins. It has been restored to very good condition. The most well-known of the 5 Ringling brothers who merged the Barnum & Bailey Circus with their own family venture to create a virtual monopoly of traveling circuses in America.

The Mediterranean coast of North Africa is represented with seven views of the Algerian ports of Bona (Annaba) and Honaine (with interesting images of construction works over the loading docks), and three views of Nigretia off Tripoli, including a group portrait of Arab workers on the steamer's deck. There are also four interesting images of the Russian ports of Odessa and Archangelsk with loaders at work and piles of wooden planks prepared for transportation; views of the Kiel Canal with the Levensau High Bridge (Germany, launched in 1895), the Port of Hull (Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire), two photos of Dartmouth, Devon, and a photo of Nigretia in the port of Charlestown, the United States.
