        The Bride and The Pennant

Chicago: Laird and Lee. (1910). First. First edition. Paperback original. Preface by Charles A. Comisky. Small bookstore label on the front wrap and the title page, cheap pulp paper quite browned, a couple of very small chips to the page edges and a couple of tiny chips to the wrappers, still a clean, very good plus copy in pictorial wrappers. Very rare pulp novel by the Cubs' "Peerless Leader" and which includes a short biography of Chance. McCue in Baseball by the Books speculates that it was ghostwritten by Hugh Fullerton, who dedicated his own first baseball novel to Chance, and who ended his last novel with the toast, "To the bride, the groom and another pennant." Fullerton was a reporter for a Chicago newspaper whose reportage was instrumental in breaking the 1919 Black Sox scandal, and he was the only local writer to predict that the White Sox "Hitless Wonders" would beat the Cubs in the 1906 World Series.       Longmans, Green & Co., London, 1910 - Octavo. Original maroon cloth, titles to upper board in blind and to spine gilt. Housed in a quarter black morocco slipcase, titles to spine gilt. Small stain to title page offset to half title, later ink ownership inscription to front pastedown, brief annotation to rear free endpaper, nonetheless a bright and very fresh copy. Six photographic portraits including frontispiece. First Edition First Impression, Presentation Copy, with the author's signed presentation inscription facing the title page, "To Ronald Ross, from H. Rider Haggard, Ditchingham, 12 January 1911". The recipient was Haggard's friend, the Nobel laureate Sir Ronald Ross (1857–1932). Awarded the Nobel for medicine (the first Briton to be awarded one) in recognition of his groundbreaking work abroad on the prevention and containment of malaria, the Indian-born Ross spent the latter part of his career in Britain. His concerns were not merely epidemiological and Ross saw clearly that social conditions, poor housing, poverty and disease were inextricably linked, a sentiment echoed in the pages of the present book, this copy of which was presented from Haggard's home at Ditchingham in Norfolk.         Souvenirs de Marine . Collection de Plans ou dessins de Navires et de Bateaux Anciens ou Modernes Existants ou Disparus, avec les Éléments Numériques nécessaires à leur Construction

Paris: 1910-1886-, 1908. Six volumes, folio, 560 x 470 mm., with three portraits (Richelieu, Colbert and Tourville) and 360 lithographed plates (and several others either unnumbered or "b" plates) as well as numerous lithographed leaves of text, dedications, indices, etc.; a few slight stains or spots, a couple of plates lightly chipped at edges; an extremely good set in the original publisher's fine-grained dark green cloth gilt. Encyclopaedic work on ship building by the great authority. Magnificent work on ship building by the great French authority, the influential director of the Musée de la Marine who had sailed with both Dumont d'Urville and Laplace. With three hundred and sixty large plates contained in six enormous volumes, the complete work is almost too much for one person to lift at a time. This is 'the great nineteenth-century collection of plans and data by the marine curator of the Louvre… A treasure-house of plans and data for all periods… Essential…' (Charles O. McDonald, {i Sailing Ship Technology: Some Bibliographical and Book Collecting Notes}, 331). Pâris' beautifully produced and painstaking encyclopaedic publication brings together lines and construction details, sometimes very closely observed, for vessels of all kinds, from all over the world, from the Mediterranean to the Americas and including China and Japan. It also includes a small series of plates devoted to the East Indies and Far East. One plate details boats of New Zealand and New Holland from the early contact period and another reproduces several Cook images of Hawaiian, Tahitian and New Zealand boats, while there is a general plate of different boats of Pacific peoples. Altogether it offers a wealth of plans and drawings of old and modern sailing ships, boats and other craft, ranging from deep-sea commercial square-riggers to men-of-war and from native craft to ancient ships, with details of their construction, masts and rigging, decks, fittings, bows and sterns, and even details of decorations. Pâris had started his naval career on the {i Astrolabe} under Dumont d'Urville; he sailed as an officer on the {i Favorite }on Laplace's first voyage, and sailed again with Laplace on the{i Artémise} on her final voyage of 1837-1840. This was his last voyage too, since he lost an arm as a result of a terrible accident. Unable to sail again, he continued a distinguished naval career as a writer and administrator, and was an influential early promoter of steam. As a writer his first major publication was his study of native ship building ({i Essai sur la construction navale des peuples extra-européens}){i }which appeared in 1841. He would publish altogether thirty-five works in his long career, the largest of which was his final work offered here, the {i Souvenirs de Marine}. In many ways this great book, much of it published after his death, represents the summation of his lifework. While his first work had concentrated on the exotic, this final study covers every aspect of more traditional shipbuilding. In 1871 Pâris was appointed director of the Musée de la Marine, at that time part of the Louvre, but now of course a magnificent independent institution. Pâris' work reflects the enthusiasm of that museum: indeed the illustrations of ships' prows and figureheads here recall some of the most striking exhibits in the museum today. Pâris gave the Musée de la Marine the final twenty-two years of his life, setting out to make its collections the most complete and perfect in the world, in a manner which echoed his gathering of information for his great books. This very attractive set has a fine provenance, having once been in the library of the Cruising Association with their gilt stamps on covers and their bookplates. The book is hard to find as a complete set today, partly because its attractive plates and large size led to copies being broken up for the print trade, but also because Volume 3 was published in a smaller edition than the rest, and is often lacking in sets. The first two volumes here are in their second printing, the others are all from the first printing. We can also offer a copy of the supplementary publication, Jean Poujade's {i Documents d'ethnographie navale}, six parts (Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1946-1948) which was planned as a supplement (in many ways a successor) to this work and which includes an index to the {i Souvenirs de Marine.}.

Frontispiece and 31 reproductions in half-tone, 2 etchings by Renoir and one each by Morisot and Manet, 2 wood engravings after Manet and one each after Degas and Camille Pissaro First UK edition, first impression of the first work to describe the development of Impressionism, with a chapter on each of the major painters and numerous illustrations. The author, Theodore Duret (1838–1927), was one of the earliest and most vocal supporters of the movement. He first met Manet in 1865 and the two became good friends, with the artist painting the connoisseur three times. During the 1870s Duret began writing articles championing the new movement, and this, his most important work, was published in 1878 to accompany the fourth Impressionist exhibition in Paris. Duret also collected and promoted the work of the pre-Raphaelites, was an early devotee of Asian art, particularly Japanese prints, and coined the term avant-garde. A nice copy of this book that "remains a primary account of Impressionism and contemporary reception" (Dictionary of Art Historians, Duke University).

ALASKA VOLUME I NARRATIVE, GLACIERS, NATIVES. By John Burroughs, John Muir and George Bird Grinnell. [with:] VOLUMES II - V, VIII - XI, XIII - XIV

Washington. 1910-14.. Eleven volumes bound in twelve, lacking only the twelfth volume (sixth and seventh volumes were never published). Numerous plates (some colored) and maps. First and second volumes in modern green half morocco, the others in original gilt green cloth, t.e.g., fifth through eleventh volumes in green cloth dust jackets. A couple covers slightly rubbed. Minor dampstain on foredge of front board of thirteenth volume. Shelf label removed from toe of some spines. A few volumes with library labels on front pastedown and front free endpaper. Bookplate on front pastedown of first and second volumes. Generally a very good, sharp set. A very rare, nearly complete set of the Harriman expedition publications, lacking just one volume. These volumes record the findings of perhaps the largest private expedition to Alaska ever undertaken, that backed by Edward Harriman in 1899 in cooperation with the Washington Academy of Sciences. The party, which included an impressive roster of scientists and naturalists (e.g. William H. Brewer of Yale, George Bird Grinnell, John Muir, Prof. William Ritter of the University of California), sailed from Seattle on May 30 and returned two months later. They sailed along the Northwest Coast, through Bering Sea with stops at various islands, visited Eskimo settlements on the Asiatic and American coasts, and went through Bering Strait to Siberia before heading home, travelling nine thousand miles in all. The first two volumes constitute the entire narrative section. The other ten volumes (of which nine are present here) of scientific data are extremely scarce, having been printed over a period of thirteen years, with a change in publisher after Harriman's death in 1910. The work is illustrated with handsome plates and maps throughout, including chromolithographs of birds and plants, as well as photogravures of Curtis Eskimo photographs. Accompanying the expedition were artists R. Swain Gifford and Fred S. Dellenbaugh, as well as bird painter Louis Agassiz Fuertes. Most of the photographs are by E.S. Curtis or C. Hart Merriman. Following is a list of the titles of each volume: 1) NARRATIVE, GLACIERS, NATIVES. By John Burroughs, John Muir, and George Bird Grinnell. 183pp., paginated continuously with second volume, which contains the index for both. 2) HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, RESOURCES. By William Healey Dall and others. pp.185- 383. Index. 3) GLACIERS AND GLACIATION. By Grove Karl Gilbert. 231pp. 4) GEOLOGY AND PALEONTOLOGY. By Benjamin Kendall Emerson and others. 173pp. 5) CRYTOGAMIC BOTANY. By J. Cardot and others. 424pp. 6) Never published. 7) Never published. 8) INSECTS PART 1. By W.H. Ashmead and others. 238pp. 9) INSECTS. PART 2. By W.H. Ashmead and others. 284pp. 10) CRUSTACEANS. By M.J. Rathbun and others. 337pp. 11) NEMERTEANS AND BRYOZOANS. By W.R. Coe and A. Robertson. 251pp. 12) [lacking here:] ENCHYTRAEIDS AND TUBICOLOUS ANNELIDS. By C. Eisen and K.J. Bush. 355pp. 13) LAND AND FRESH WATER MOLLUSKS OF ALASKA AND ADJOINING REGIONS. HYDROIDS OF THE EXPEDITION. By W.H. Dall and C.C. Nutting. 250pp. 14) MONOGRAPH OF THE SHALLOW-WATER STARFISHES OF THE NORTH PACIFIC COAST FROM THE ARCTIC TO CALIFORNIA. By A.E. Verrill.         The Sphinx

John Lane. Printed at the Ballantyne Press. London and New York 1910 - First Edition Thus with notes by Robert Ross. Original fragile pictorial boards designed by Charles Ricketts, publisher's dust jacket with same Ricketts design. Extremely Rare Wilde publication. In 1904, Ricketts presented the Sphinx manuscript to Ross, who then gifted it to the British Museum. Before doing so, he published this smaller format with his own notes. Ross, Wilde's longtime lover, friend and, finally, his literary executor, had the author's remains moved from the Bagneaux Cemetery to P?re Lachaise in Paris in 1909 and directed that his own remains be buried in the tomb. A very uncommon edition of this famous poem; fewer than 5 institutional copies located and no copy exists at the Bodley Head archives at the Harry Ransom Research Center. Mason 363. Very Good tight copy, with visible crease lines at spine edges, small chip to base of spine, final advertising leaf appears to have been excised, in attractive Very Good thin-paper dustjacket that seems to have defied all odds by surviving, shallow chips at spine ends, clean split along front spine edge.
