        A Circuit Rider's Wife

Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company. (1910). First. First edition. Illustrations by William H. Everett. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with decorative gilt stamping. Mild edgewear, an attractive, very good or better copy. Inscribed and dated by Harris on the front flyleaf: "With compliments of the Author, Corra Harris. In the Valley, September 4th 1922." Corra May Harris (1869-1935) was, for a time, the most widely known woman from the state of Georgia. Her literary reputation during her life, and her legacy since, rest on this novel. Drawing heavily on her troubled marriage to Methodist minister and educator Lundy Howard Harris, it tells of the challenges, hardships, and mostly intangible rewards of itinerant country preaching in the Northern Georgia mountains. Harris wrote more than two dozen books and published over 200 articles and short stories, and well over a thousand book reviews. Although she became famous for her fiction, she earned a reputation for reactionary conservatism with a notorious nationally published piece defending the lynching of Thomas Wilkes, alias Sam Hose, near Newnan, Georgia in 1899 and her subsequent essays on Southern identity. She was not so easily categorized though, her 1915 novel The Co-Citizens was seen by various critics as both showing support and opposition to woman suffrage! Later, Harris was the first women war correspondent to go abroad in World War I. This novel was the basis for the 1951 film I'd Climb the Highest Mountain written and produced by Georgia native Lamar Trotti and starred Susan Hayward and William Lundigan. This title was reprinted by the University of Georgia in 1998, but the first edition is very uncommon, especially signed. .

[Presentation with Sketch] A Century of Art

London: Carfax & Co. for Charles Ricketts, [1910]. First edition. 12mo. Polished green buckram, black leather panel and gilt lettering on spine, original light green printed wrappers bound in place. Inscribed by Ricketts to a friend and admirer, with sketch and one page autograph letter attached, all to H. G. Plimmer, a well-know physician and art enthusiast (whose superb pictorial bookplate appears on front pastedown). On top of title-page: "To Dr. Plimmer from C. Ricketts, Sunday after Lunch." And appearing just above publisher credits on t.p., Ricketts has sketched himself, rotund and sleeping, in a reclining position on an armchair with the caption, 'C.R. after Lunch at 3 Hall Rd.'" As well, affixed to a preliminary page, is the folowing ALS from Ricketts: "Dear Plimmer, I am sending you this pamphlet of mine as the preface touches on some important points in Art. It was issued during the coronation Epidemic and is now out of print. Don't bother to acknowledge it, but only a few people are interested in what I feel about pictures nd among them I like to count you. Sincerely Yours, C. Ricketts." A near fine copy of an extremely scarce pamphlet (no other copies located on internet) and indeed a colorful collection of presentation highlights from one of the chief book artists and art critics of the period. Ricketts presentation copies are quite scarce, and that with an original sketch exceedingly so.

LOGGING AND LUMBERING OPERATIONS IN HOKKAIDO

1910. Paperback. Fine. [PHOTO ALBUM]. LOGGING AND LUMBERING OPERATIONS IN HOKKAIDO. N.p.: Mitsui Bussau Kaisha, Ltd., n.d. (circa 1910). 34 black and white photographs, including three double-page panoramic views, which illustrate all the steps in the logging and lumbering operations (cutting the timber, transporting it to the mills, milling, shipping to markets) through the eventual use of the lumber, in this case, to build a private passenger train. Although it was probably prepared for promotional use, the photographs are carefully composed and quite striking. Many of the logging photographs were taken during the winter and the whiteness of snow is a great foil for the closely graduated dark tones of the trees, laborers, and equipment, and in particular for delineating the delicate and complex silhouettes of the trees. The three panoramas ("General View of Mitsui's Mills at Sunagawa," "General View of Otaru Harbour," and "General View of Murorarn Harbour") are truly expansive and highly detailed. Most photos are 5 1/4" x 3 3/4" (13.5 x 9.5 cm); the panoramas are 14 1/2" x 3 3/4" (36.5 x 9.5 cm). Each photograph is identified in the negative with a small English-language label. The photographs are laid-down on heavy grey stock, one to a leaf, in a commercially manufactured album which is side-sewn in matching wrappers, with a printed title label on the front. Contemporary gift inscription, dated 30 October 1911, on the verso of the final leaf. A bit of sunning to front cover, and a few leaves are sprung, but the photos are fine.

Schachmeister Steinitz.

Ansbach: Druck und Verlag von C Brugel & Sohn, 1910-1921 4 volumes: 1859-1877: xiv+418 pages with frontispiece, diagrams and tables; 1878-1883: 232+[ii ad] pages with frontispiece, diagrams and tables; 1884-1893: viii+482+[vi ad] pages with frontispiece and diagrams; 1894-1900: xviii+391+[iv ad] pages with frontispiece, diagrams and table. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/4") bound in beige cloth with original covers laid on. [Biblioteca van Der Niemeijeriana:3131] First edition.Wilhelm (later William) Steinitz (May 17, 1836 ?" August 12, 1900) was an Austrian-American chess player and the first undisputed world chess champion from 1886 to 1894. Some contemporaries and later writers described him as world champion since 1866, when he won a match against Adolf Anderssen. Steinitz lost his title to Emanuel Lasker in 1894 and also lost a re-match in 1897. Statistical rating systems give Steinitz a rather low ranking among world champions, mainly because he took several long breaks from competitive play. However, an analysis based on one of these rating systems shows that he was one of the most dominant players in the history of the game. Although Steinitz became "world number one" by winning in the all-out attacking style that was common in the 1860s, he unveiled in 1873 a new positional style of play and demonstrated that it was superior to the old style. His new style was controversial and some even branded it as "cowardly", but many of Steinitz's games showed that it could also provide a platform for attacks as ferocious as those of the old school. Steinitz was also a prolific writer on chess, and defended his new ideas vigorously. The debate was so bitter and sometimes abusive that it became known as the "Ink War". By the early 1890s, Steinitz' approach was widely accepted and the next generation of top players acknowledged their debt to him, most notably his successor as world champion, Emanuel Lasker. As a result of the "Ink War", traditional accounts of Steinitz' character depict him as ill-tempered and aggressive; but more recent research shows that he had long and friendly relationships with some players and chess organizations. Most notably from 1888 to 1889 he co-operated with the American Chess Congress in a project to define rules for the future conduct of contests for the world championship title that he held. Steinitz was unskilled at managing money and lived in poverty all his life.Condition:Rebound in beige cloth with new end papers and original paste-board cover laid on front cover. Volume 3, 1884-1893, with Studenterforeningens Skakklub stamped on title verso, some pencil markings to titles else a very good set of an extremely difficult first edition biography to obtain.

The first English edition followed six months later on November 15th, 1910, under the title A Gentleman of Leisure. There are minor textual differences between the American and British editions of the book.

n.p., 1910. 4-3/4 x 2-3/4 inches. Fine . A delightful original ink drawing by Palmer Cox of three of his marvellous Brownies. "At the age of forty [Palmer Cox] began illustrating stories for St. Nicholas Magazine...He loved children and enjoyed entertaining them, and the children loved his drawings. As the magazine called for more and more material his brain was taxed for an original idea...and eventually the famous 'Brownies' were conceived...He resolved that there should be no pain or crime in the beings of his creation, only laughter for children...Cox estimated that he drew over a million of them, and of his thirteen Brownie books over a million copies were sold within his lifetime."

Erinnerungen aus Süd-West. - Privates Photographienalbum der Farm Korab bei Gaub (Ghaub) im damaligen Deutsch-Südwestafrika. 17 private Orig.-Photographien.
