        Monsieur Yturbe

Paris c. 1910 - Size: 560 x 723 mm Fair condition. Lithograph. Printed colour. Georges Goursat (1863-1934), known as Sem, attained a high level of success with his wonderful portrayals of Paris at the turn of the century. This outstanding caricaturist was a member of the Salon des Humoristes and an officer of the Legion of Honor. His works offer us glimpses into Parisian high society at the turn of the century. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable, particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition, in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. Sem captured the spirit of the subject and in turn produced images that were true to life. This beautiful print is a part of Album de Sem published in Paris c. 1910.

        Kodak Glimpses of Chicago Parks

6151 Lexington Ave. Chicago: Wm. F. E. Gurley, 1910. First Edition. Boards. Very Good. First Edition. [1] leaf (typescript title page), [115] leaves of plates, [3] leaves in rear (typescript, tipped in index pages). Inscribed by Gurley "To my friend C. L. Frank with the hope of many happy returns. Wm. F. E. Gurley. Feb 2, 1911" on the front flyleaf. 3/4 leather over marbled paper boards (minor "chewing" at base of spine). 7 1/2 x 9 inches. Marbled endpapers. The 115 un-numbered leaves of plates are all cyanotypes of various Chicago parks: Washington Park, Jackson Park, Lincoln Park, Garfield Park, Douglas Park, Humboldt Park and a group of Miscellaneous Views outside of the parks. Each plate is a wide margined cyanotype print (with the image approximately 3 x 5 inches in the center). Images are strong, dark blues for the most part. Boards. William F. E. Gurley was listed in the 1917 Illinois Academy of Science as a Paleontologist. The 1908 Cornell "ten year book" notes Gurley was the Curator in Paleontology at the Walker Museum [University of Chicago]. The cyanotypes range from architectural to scenic to monuments water scenes. There was little attempt to capture scenes with people in them, and what people are present are small in scale given the views relative to the subject, which was mostly the grandeur of the architecture and landscapes. The Jackson Park images include a number of buildings from the 1893 Columbian Exposition, long since destroyed by the wrecking ball. Cyanotypes are a much less commonly used process where the prints are blue in color.Rare, with only one other example we could find, at the Library of Congress in the Pennell collections. We suspect given the method of production (typescript index pages and title page) few were ever made.

        History of the Fan

      J. B. Lippiincott Company; Kegan Paul, Trench Trubner & Co. 1910 - Folio - over 12. Book. Limited first edition, this is #43 of 180 copies for sale in the United States. xix + 311 pp. Lippincott of Philadelphia in association with Kegan French of London. 27 color plates, 100 more in half-tone. While ex-lib copy, evidence of it is overall discreet, with unobtrusive bookplate on FFP and small pasted tape on lower spine. Pages and interior entirely clean, and tight. Because of heaviness of book, inner hinges in front and back reinforced with clear tape. Two straight lines running down spine. Overall, VG. This was first and very comprehensive study of its subject and remains an exemplary exegesis on a niche in the decorative arts. Book is extremely heavy and so postage may need to be recalculated, especially for export. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
