Raum und Zeit [Space and Time]

Leipzig: F.W. Vogel, 1909. First edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Minkowski's explanation of the fourth dimension, a critical bridge between Einstein's theories of special and general relativity. "In "'Space and Time', read by Minkowski in Cologne only a few months before his death, he introduced the notion that made possible the expansion of the relativity theory of Einstein from its specific (1905) to its general form (1916). Minkowski's space-time hypothesis was in effect a restatement of Einstein's basic principle in a form that greatly enhanced its plausibility and also introduced important new developments. Hitherto natural phenomena had been thought to occur in a space of three dimensions and to flow uniformly through time. Minkowski maintained that the separation of time and space is a false conception; that time itself is a dimension, comparable to length, breadth, and height; and that therefore the true conception of reality was constituted by a space-time continuum possessing these four dimensions. This strongly reinforced Einstein's objections to absolute concepts and supported his view of the relativity of events in nature" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 401). In: Verhandlungen der Gesellschaft deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte, Vol 80, pp. 4-9. Leipzig: F.W. Vogel, 1909. Octavo, original wrappers; custom box. A little wear to spine and wrapper edges; otherwise fine. Rare in original wrappers. NOTE: There were three 1909 (simultaneous or nearly simultaneous) journal printings of Raum und Zeit. The modern consensus is that this printing in "Verhandlungen" appeared first; the printing in "Jahresbericht" is cited by PMM. Very Good.

An Account of the Arab tribes in the Vicinity of Aden

1909 - First edition. 2 vols. 14 genealogical tables (9 folding) & 3 folding maps. Large 8vo. Original green cloth, gilt, slightly rubbed and spotted. [vi], ii, 356pp. Bombay, Government Central Press, A scarce, important work. Compiled initially in 1886, the text was brought up to date in 1907 by Captain A.E. Mosse. The authors provide a chronological breakdown of the events, relationships and hostilities of each of the sixteen tribes in the area. In addition, the work discusses the nature of each tribe (i.e. ?a proud, warlike and independent race?), their income, how they're organised and notes on sub-tribes and their reigning families. The appendix includes copies of the treaties and agreements signed between local tribes and the British, many of which led to the establishment of the British Protectorate. Hunter wrote the first account of some of the tribes surrounding Aden in his work An Account of the British Settlement of Aden in Arabia (1877). Aden was ruled as a part of British India from 1839 until 1937, when it became a Crown Colony. Its proximity to Zanzibar, the Suez canal and Mumbai made it an important strategic possession in the British Empire. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Aesop's Fables Limited to 750 copies signed by Edward J. Detmold

Hodder & Stoughton, London 1909 - Aesop's Fables. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1909. Limited to 750 copies signed by Edward J. Detmold, of which this is #532. Twenty-five full page color tipped-in plates by Detmold with lettered tissue guards. A masterpiece of illustration, and widely regarded as Detmold's finest work. 10 inches by 12 inches. Bound in vibrant red morocco by Bayntun/Riviere with Detmold's hare vividly inlaid on the front cover, and multiple gilt borders to front and back covers. Gilt-tooled turn-ins and marbled endpapers. Housed in somewhat worn buckram slipcase. Spine darkened and some light spots of rubbing. Aesop's Fables, or the Aesopica, is a collection of fables credited to Aesop, a slave and storyteller believed to have lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 564 BCE. Of diverse origins, the stories associated with his name have descended to modern times through a number of sources and continue to be reinterpreted in different verbal registers and in popular as well as artistic media. The fables originally belonged to the oral tradition and were not collected for some three centuries after Aesop's death. By that time a variety of other stories, jokes and proverbs were being ascribed to him, although some of that material was from sources earlier than him or came from beyond the Greek cultural sphere. The process of inclusion has continued until the present, with some of the fables unrecorded before the later Middle Ages and others arriving from outside Europe. The process is continuous and new stories are still being added to the Aesop corpus, even when they are demonstrably more recent work and sometimes from known authors. Manuscripts in Latin and Greek were important avenues of transmission, although poetical treatments in European vernaculars eventually formed another. On the arrival of printing, collections of Aesop's fables were among the earliest books in a variety of languages. Through the means of later collections, and translations or adaptations of them, Aesop's reputation as a fabulist was transmitted throughout the world. Edward Julius Detmold and his twin brother Charles Maurice Detmold were prolific Victorian book illustrators. Edward Detmold became one of the most talented of illustrators, depicting animals and plants with an extraordinary understanding, and making use of fantasy settings of architecture and landscape. In the 1920s, he retired to Montgomeryshire with his widowed sister as companion, initially living the life of an artist but finally retiring completely from public life. He suffered a period of depression, brought on by failing eyesight, that resulted in his committing suicide, aged 73, by his shooting himself in the chest in July 1957. Handsomely bound by Richard Smart (stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in). Full medium green crushed levant morocco over boards. In the center of the front cover is a superb inlaid design in multi colored textured and hand-painted morocco based on the headpiece of chapter XIX (page 113) "How the Knight Huldbrand was buried". The inlaid image shows the widowed bride, Undine, kneeling on the ground with the castle in the background. To the left of the image the binder has added a Rackhamesque tree with leaves outlined in gilt. Spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Elaborate gilt turn-ins. Green marbled liners and end-leaves. Fine. A superb and very attractive binding. "This is the story of the Knight Huldbrand of Ringstetten and of Undine, telling how the Knight wedded with a water-sprite, and what chanced therefrom: and how the Knight died and was buried: and how Undine returned to her element beneath the Mediterranean Sea." (Introduction). "With the aqueous world of Undine Rackham found an opportunity to revive and develop his earlier art nouveau linear decorative drawing. especially in the need to incorporate waves and water currents in his pictures. He was thus able to connect a felicitious quality of decoration into his plates, was well as a new feeling for flat pattern which harks back to fin de siècle without being too openly mannered" (Gettings, Arthur Rackham, p. 123). "Although the waves and eddies of Undine bear the mark of Art Nouveau, the work was still another step forward for Rackham, the unity of conception in the line drawings and the colour plates, the assertion of contrast in the moods of the heroine, rendering it a masterpiece of sympathetic understanding" (Hudson, p. 80). Hudson, p. 168; Latimore and Haskell p. 34; Riall p. 93.

The artistic legacy of Champa consists primarily of sandstone sculptures - both sculpture in the round and relief sculpture - and brick buildings. Some metal statues and decorative items have also survived. Much of the remaining art expresses religious themes, and though some pieces would have been purely decorative, others would have served important functions in the religious life of the Chams, which synthesized elements of Hinduism (especially Saivism), Buddhism and indigenous cults. This artistic legacy has been decimated by neglect, war, and vandalism. Much of the damage has been done in the 20th century. Some French scholars such as Henri Parmentier and Jean Boisselier were able to take photographs, create drawings, and pen descriptions of works which have been destroyed in the meantime." [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Pre WWI Cookery Manuscript by Hazel Drake, School 45 Desk 4 in Domestic Economics Class

Manuscript cookery book written by Hazel Drake and dated 14 September 1909 through 31 May 1910. Bound composition book comprised of 45 handwritten pages, 36 contemporary print recipes and household advertisements, and 20 printed assignments provided by the Department of Public Instruction. Notebook also contains 6 handwritten pages, 48 printed recipes loosely inserted into the back. Accompanied by two cookery manuals pasted into the book: [US Food Administration]. Best Wartime Recipes. (New York: Royal Baking Powder Company, 1917); and Wallace, Lilly Haxworth. Household Handbook Containing Reliable Hints and Suggestions for the Household (London: Rumford Chemical Works, n.d.). Black cloth spine and cardboard covers with original paper label to the front; front cover cracked and spine partially detached at the foot, with flyleaf and first page detached; textblock else tight. A rich resource of kitchen recipes, diagrams for table and service etiquette, menu plans, formulas for household cleaning products, first aid instructions and home medical remedies. Compiled by Hazel Drake, a high school student attending home economics classes in Buffalo, NY this book provides a wealth of insight on how young women were being trained in domestic management. In addition to her own handwritten notes and recipes, young Hazel pasted in numerous printed recipes and diagrams to supplement a notebook that she clearly used as a reference following her completion of the course. Each lesson is dated on the upper left corner; and Hazel typically initiated the class day with a handwritten reflection to the top (such as "The glory of life is to give, not to get; to serve, not to be served"; and "Patience is a necessary ingredient of genius"). The tops of various pages are marked with teachers' notes in blue pencil, commenting on the strength or weakness of Hazel's assignments and making recommendations for later improvements. The contents of Hazel's composition book reveal the layered expectations placed on women running homes at the time-as Hazel balances menu plans and recipes for everything from "Broiled Beefsteak" to "Donut Sponge Cake" with laundry-detergent formulas, instructions on unclogging drains to ensure a sanitary kitchen, and information on "Poultices" and emergency remedies. While the final handwritten pages conclude Hazel's 2-year course in school, the amount of inserted information as well as the two later cookbooks tipped into her manuscript suggest that she used the notebook as a reference guide into her adulthood. A rich resource with research possibilities including but not limited to cookery, diet and nutrition, economics, medicine, the history of education, and women's studies.

Original costume design for Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Le Coq d'Or by the noted Russian artist Alexandre Benois, in all likelihood for the character the Tsaritsa of Shemakha

Possibly a preparatory drawing for the Tsaritsa's costume. Rimsky-Korsakov's last opera, Coq d'Or (The Golden Cockerel) was first performed in Moscow at the Solodovnikov Theatre (Sergey Ivanovich Zimin's private opera company), on September 24/October 7, 1909. It is in a prologue, three acts, and an epilogue by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov to a libretto by Vladimir Nikolayevich Bel'sky after the eponymous imitation folk tale in verse by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, based in turn on 'The House of the Weathercock' and 'Legend of the Arabian Astrologer' from The Alhambra by Washington Irving."The Golden Cockerel is the only one of Rimsky- Korsakov's 15 operas to have achieved repertory status beyond Russia. This was Dyagilev's doing. At the prompting of the artist Alexandre Benois, the great impresario staged the opera in Paris and London in 1914 (under the title Le coq d'or, which has stuck to it in the West), with the singers seated in rows at the sides of the stage, accompanying the movements of dancers and mimes, who enacted the plot according to the conventions of ballet d'action (choreography by Fokin)... It also set an important precedent for Stravinsky, whose opera The Nightingale, not to mention such later stage works as Renard, The Wedding and Pulcinella, to a greater or lesser extent embodied the same split between singing and movement. It was an important stage in the modernist dismantling of the Gesamtkunstwerk." Richard Taruskin in Grove Music Online.Benois is considered a seminal influence on modern ballet set and costume design. "In 1901, [he] was appointed scenic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, the performance space for the Imperial Russian Ballet. He moved to Paris in 1905 and thereafter devoted most of his time to stage design and decor. During these years, his work with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes was groundbreaking. His sets and costumes for the productions of Les Sylphides (1909), Giselle (1910), and Petrushka (1911), are counted among his greatest triumphs. Although Benois worked primarily with the Ballets Russes, he also collaborated with the Moscow Art Theatre and other notable theatres of Europe." Wikipedia. Watercolour and pencil on laid paper with partial watermark "MBM." 320 x 240 mm. Signed by the artist with initials and dated 1932 in pencil at lower left. With pencilled notes in Benois's hand. Very slightly soiled; 35 mm. tear to blank right margin repaired; remnants of mounting paper to upper corners of verso.
