Printing and the Mind of Man 401. [First offprint of First Separate Edition].

Druck und Verlag von B. G. Teubner, Leipzig und Berlin 1909 - Very Good++ First Separate Edition, Offprint in modern half leather marbled board binding, gilt lettering spine. Library stamp title page. No other markings. Mild foxing frontispiece portrait, title page. pp. 5-6 trimmed in binding to the edge of the text but no letters or words were cut. Frontispiece portrait of Hermann Minkowski, [4], 14, [2 advertisements] pps. No man is an Island. This is equally true for the great and the humble. Thus, Albert Einstein's search to generalize the special theory of relativity (1905) depended upon Minkowski's four dimensional manifold in which space and time became inseparable. Minkowski's first report in 1907, in his paper on electromagnetic phenomena in moving bodies, was appreciated only by a few researchers. The current work, 'Raum und Zeit' was first published (1909) in Verhandlungen der Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher and Arzte and then in the Jahresbericht de Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung from which this first Separate Edition is taken. It is this work which provided the crucial nexus between space and time that enabled Einstein to propose his General Theory of Relativity in 1916.Hermann Minkowski (1864-1909) was a great and ultimately tragic figure in mathematics. His genius declared itself in 1883 when he shared the French Academy's Grand Prix for a paper on quadratic forms. From 1887-1902 he taught in Bonn and Zurich. In 1902 he moved to Gottingen to an endowed chair in mathematics arranged for him by David Hilbert. At Gottingen, influenced by Hilbert and his colleagues, he became interested in mathematical physics. In 1907, his research led him to realize that the work of Lorentz and Einstein could best be understood in non-Euclidean terms. From that derived his understanding that space and time, heretofore considered independent, should be coupled in a 'space-time continuum'. This is his most clearly stated exposition of that idea. The current edition was prepared as a memorial to Dr. Minkowski several months after his early and tragic death from a ruptured appendix (Printing & the Mind of Man 401; Porter-Biographical Dictionary of Scientists 1994).         My African Journey

This book is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. In 1909, just a year after the first edition, the publisher issued a so-called "First Cheap Edition" produced in vintage "pulp" style. The text is arranged in a 92-page, two-column format with a few pages of advertisements at either end. This handsome paperback edition features a color illustration on the front cover similar to that of the first edition, with Churchill in pith helmet with binoculars around his neck and a rifle in his hands standing beside a dead white rhinoceros. Some 20,000 copies were produced (80 percent sold domestically and 20 percent shipped for export), but given the fragility of the edition, few survive today. And those that do are usually in poor condition - befitting a 100 year old cheap paperback. This copy is a wonderful exception. Moreover, it is clearly one of the 20 percent of copies shipped for export. The former owner acquired it from Australia and it bears a vintage small circular sticker on the front cover from a bookseller in Sydney, NSW. The front covers are remarkably bright and complete, with no losses or tears and only the slightest soiling. The front cover has a few trivial corner creases. The spine is even more remarkable, being entirely intact apart from trivial, fractional losses at the ends and a closed tear at the center between the "H" and "o" in "Right Hon. Winston S. Churchill". There are no vertical creases, which, along with the tight and square overall condition, indicates that this copy has never been read. The pulp paper contents are browned as inevitable, but are crisp and tight in the wrappers. This is among the very best copies we have ever seen and all the more remarkable for the fact that it is among the few survivors of those 20 percent designated for export. The book is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A27.8, Woods/ICS A12(b), Langworth p.85.

Legatura in mz. tl. coeva. SMITH, Effie. ROSEMARY AND PANSIES. Boston: Richard G. Badger/The Gorham Press, 1909. First edition. 52 pp. Small 8vo., ribbed green cloth stamped in gilt and blind. Corners and spine somewhat shelfworn, with gilt cover lettering and floral ornaments rubbed. Ink ownership dated 1916 to front flyleaf. A few of the poems' titles have light pencil marks next to them. In 1900, educational opportunities were rare for both blacks and whites in most of eastern Kentucky. Black students in Pike County had to leave the mountains to advance beyond the eighth grade. In this environment Effie Waller, a young black woman, wrote ballads and verse to Bryant and Longfellow. Both of her parents were former slaves who provided all of their children a degree of education far beyond the norm. Waller's mother supplied the love and care that insulated the children from the harsh realities of racism. Effie Waller Smith married a deputy sheriff who was murdered in the line of duty, and when she moved out of Kentucky she left little record of her existence. What remains are three volumes of verse, three short stories, and a few poems she wrote for literary magazines. They testify to her desires and ambitions as a creative writer, and yet they remain largely unacknowledged. In 1906, Effie Waller Smith died in total obscurity.--David Deskins, Clerk of the Court, Pike County. Rare. Heredity By Effie Smith, in Rosemary and Pansies, 1909 Our dead forefathers, mighty though they be, For all their power still leave our spirits free; Though on our paths their shadows far are thrown, The life that each man liveth is his own.

Cat's Cradle: a Picture-book for Little Folk; cats by Louis Wain; rhymes by May Byron

New York: Dodge Publishing Company, 1909. Good -. Wain, Louis. [48] p.: 7 full-page color illustrations, many color illustrations with text; 25 cm. Grey paper over boards; black, green, and purple cover illustration of female cat with ball of yarn sitting next to kitten in a cradle. Grey fixed endpapers. No date of publication given; it was published in Britain by Blackie and Son in 1908. This is the first American edition with first verse being "Playtime in Pussy-town." Title vignette is a cat holding a sign reading "Christmas Carols." Most pages have one illustration with amusing verse, some have more than one illustration on a page. The center two pages, without verse, contain four illustrations set in a nickelodeon, showing what happens when an audience of cats sees a moving image of mice. The final 11 pages contain verses about Christmas, including Santa Claws and several about the traditional English pantomime. Gift inscription on front fixed endpaper dated 1912 or 1913. The scarce first American edition stating only Dodge Publishing is much less common than either the English edition by Blackie and Son or those listing both publishers. In Good- Condition: original cloth spine is gone (as is typical of this book); boards have been reattached through an old repair; chipping along edges of gray paper over boards, with most significant loss along spine and fore-edge of front board; light soiling throughout, primarily along lower edges; occasional foxing; 2-cm. tear from top edge and lower edge of title page at gutter; otherwise, solid.
