        Raum und Zeit.

Teubner, Leipzig 1909 - In: Jahresberichte der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung, vol. 18, pp. 75-88. Leipzig: Teubner, 1909. 4to (240x167 mm). Contemporary library cloth with handwritten paper label in modern cloth protective case with morocco spine label. The whole volume is offered. ---- PMM 401; DSB IX, 414; Norman 1514. - In this paper 'Space and Time,' read by Minkowski in Cologne only a few days before his death, he introduced the notion that made possible the expansion of the relativity theory of Einstein from its specific to its general form. The technical description of Minkowski's hypothesis is the four-dimensional space-time continuum. Minkowski maintained that the separation of time and space is a false conception; that time itself is itself a dimension, comparable to length, breadth and height; and that therefore the true conception of reality was constituted by a space-time continuum possessing these four dimensions." (PMM). This is the original article as referenced by PMM. The work was also simultaneously published in "Jahresberichte der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung. Leipzig 1909, an edition which is much more common on the market. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Autograph Manuscript Signed

This well-known French poet, novelist and playwright was elected member of the Academie francaise in 1909; his home at La Garde on the French Riviera is now a museum. AMS, 20pp (rectos only). 8" X 10 3/4", n.p., n.y. [ca. 1890]. Very good to near fine. Custom bound in half grey cloth with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. Binding is very good, showing mild edgewear. Holograph manuscript for "La Noel du petit Jean," penned boldly in black ink on heavy stock leaves and boldly signed at the conclusion. Clearly a working draft, for it contains crossouts, insertions and corrections throughout. Apparently this was a novel, for the journal "Bulletin Bibliographique" and other scholarly sources of 1890-91 list an Aicard work by this title, one even noting 754 pages -- though perhaps these are lists of works in progress, for no published novel by this title can be found. To confuse matters further, the gilt title of this bound manuscript notes "1909," although this could be an error or simply the year this was bound. After the closing signature on the final leaf, Aicard pens the address of the "journal le Figaro" in Paris. An intriguing manuscript worthy further research.

RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, Rendered Into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1909]. First edition thus, the poem printed from the second Quaritch edition (with the additional quatrains) and being the first with Dulac?s Illustrations. 20 tipped-in color plates by Edmund Dulac mounted on cream colored sheets with elaborate border designs on the plates and decorative frames on each page printed in light green . Also with a beautifully decorated titlepage printed in light green and burnt umber. The pages within the quatrains printed on recto only. 4to, publisher?s original full white buckram lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt on spine and cover. Upper cover depicts a wreath composed at the top of two peacocks and the bottom two facing elephants. A fine copy, very fresh and handsome, the binding remarkably clean for white cloth and internally very near pristine with only a slight bit of the usual evidence of foxing. The spine with only very minor mellowing. A very pleasing copy. FIRST EDITION OF THE WONDERFUL ISSUE ILLUSTRATED BY EDMUND DULAC. Announced in June1909, Edward Fitzgerald?s translation of the 12th century Persian RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, newly illustrated by Edmund Dulac, became the Gift Book of the year. Each page of verses or quatrains was printed on heavy paper surrounded by delicate borders and was frequently interspersed with Dulac?s evocative paintings. After the RUBAIYAT?S publication in America, its US publisher wrote of the book."In point of excellence of art, popularity, distinction and profit the crowning achievement...was the publication of the Fitzgerald version of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam illustrated by Edmund Dulac. The book was a joy and a treasure, Its public acceptance was immediate and great." -A.Hughey. One can see why the book received such immediate and unalloyed admiration. For on these twenty exquisitely detailed pages, one finds unsurpassed artistic expression. The viewer is irresistibly drawn into the Persian poetical world of starry nights, labrythine bazaars, dusty streets, flower perfumed bowers, and sultry royal palaces. We can almost smell the pungent incense and feel the hot air move as the fan stirs a tiny breeze. We are palpably drawn into Dulac?s hypnotic images of Middle Eastern sensation and emotion. The artist used intense but subtle tones of color to create a rich tapestry of visual contrasts, page after page. Pale flesh is swathed in delicate patterned silks and set to pose on hillsides of velvet grass. Figures emerge from opalescent nights and drink thirstily from silver goblets. Dulac vividly captures the temptations of the senses as Omar himself succumbed to them. The RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM illustrations portray a humanity, poignant and complex, as perhaps nowhere else in Dulac?s repertoire. The modern reader can partake of Fitzgerald?s spell-binding translation of one of the finest poems ever written, while sipping the spiced wine of Dulac?s sensuous illustrations.

Also in 1856 Cowell introduced FitzGerald to a collection of quatrains (or rubáiyát) attributed to the eleventh-century Persian poet ‘Umar Khayyam. See ODNB.Dulac, [Edmond], artist, who ‘made greater use of the breakthrough in four-colour printing, conceiving and modelling his pictures in colour rather than adding colours to a linear design.         [ALBUM OF EIGHTY-FIVE ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOWING CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS AROUND CALIFORNIA, MANY INVOLVING BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION, AND OTHERS SHOWING PIERS AND BUILDINGS]

[Various places in California. 1909-1913].. Eighty-five photographic prints, ranging from 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches to 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. A few of the images captioned in the negative, but many more captioned in ink in the white border. Mounted in contemporary oblong quarto cloth album, string- tied. The photographs are in near fine condition. An album of interesting photographs of construction projects in California, mostly centered in the Bay Area and Central Valley, in the years before World War I. Many of the photographs show bridges under construction or finished bridges, and it is likely that the compiler of this album was either a contractor or an engineer - someone who worked on pilings and bridge foundations. Included are pictures of the building of Pier 30-32 in San Francisco in 1913, a major public works project in the post-earthquake years. Located just south of the present location of the Bay Bridge, Pier 30-32 was built as the first pair of piers in San Francisco. It was the first with up to date freight handling services consisting of traveling cranes, telphers and shiptowers. A major construction project, it is represented by several photographs. A number of bridges and bridge construction projects are also shown, including the Crescent City suspension bridge, the Eel River Bridge in Humboldt County, four images of the Skaggs Bridge in Fresno, a bridge in Modesto and several photographs of San Joaquin River bridges, and the Oroville Bridge. There are also a number of images of lift bridges, including the Hawthorne Avenue Bridge in Portland, and a pair of pictures of the types of dredgers used in constructing river bridges. Other photographs show buildings in Thousand Oaks, Eureka, Fresno, and San Francisco a few months after the earthquake. An interesting visual survey of public works constructions projects in California in the early twentieth century.

[Green, Elizabeth Shippen] Original Watercolor Painting by Elizabeth Shippen Green

Original Elizabeth Shippen Green Watercolor entitled “Clematis XII.” Signed lower right: "ESGE To HC With Love, 1909." This is a full-size watercolor painted and given by Green to her friend and gardener, Henrietta Cozens of Cogslea (residence of J.W. Smith, E.S. Green, Violet Oakley and Cozens in early 1900’s). As per the account of Edith Emerson, friend and eventual curator of Violet Oakley’s estate, Green painted it as a present for Cozens, with a gentle ribbing implied in the title. As the story goes, Cozens, who became quite proficient in her gardening skills for the beautiful estate, at the beginning of her tenure as gardener couldn’t quite get the names of the flowers straight. So after misnaming nearly a dozen flowers ‘clematis,’ Green came up with this painting of lilies and snapdragons and named it, sardonically, “Clematis XII” as in, ‘the twelfth try at getting the name right.’ The painting is bright and colorful and in pristine condition, measuring 20” x 15.”

        THE CONDITION OF ENGLAND

1909. London: Methuen & Co., (1909). 40 pp ads dated May 1909. Original blue cloth. First Edition of the best-known work by this member of the Christian Social Union and Liberal member of Parliament. He had earlier (1902) written FROM THE ABYSS, about life in the London slums (after moving there, anonymously, to experience such life first-hand). With Ford Madox Hueffer/Ford he co-edited The English Review, and during the Great War he would be head of British propaganda, for which he recruited writers such as John Buchan and Arthur Conan Doyle. After the war, propaganda was handled otherwise and Masterman's services were no longer required, he lost his seat in Parliament, and he gradually sank into poverty and alcoholism, dying in 1927.~"The Condition of England" had been a term coined by Thomas Carlyle in 1839, referring to the living conditions of the working class. Masterman's 300-page book on the evolving social condition of Britain was a major work of its day.~This copy is very good (spine slightly browned, with very light wear at the corners). Today this is a curiously scarce book.
