Trans-Himalaya: Discoveries and Adventures in Tibet. Two Volumes.

MacMillan, New York 1909 - Original two volume set in maroon cloth boards with a Tibetan male figure stamped in gold on the front cover. A third volume was published later as a supplement. From 1905-1908, Hedin despite British and Tibetan opposition to his plans, managed to sneak into Tibet, and explored extensively in its southern and western regions. Hedin claimed the discovery of a "previously unknown" major mountain system, the "Trans-Himalaya," and the sources of the major S. Asian rivers, although these claims were then disputed. He explored extensively on and around Lake Manasarovar. Not by his own choice, spent significant time in Shigatse, where he interacted with the Panchen Lama. Hedin had a phenomenal memory and his books, with their vivid details, are still fascinating reading for anyone who is interested in Asian cultures. Catalog Merlot

        A Gentleman from Mississippi

      J. S. Ogilvie Publishing Co New York (1909 - First Edition. Original blue illustrated cloth and illustrated dustjacket. Rare novelization by Frederick R. Toombs of this extremely popular play by Thomas A. Wise and Harrison Rhodes and produced by William Brady and Joseph Grismer, with 407 performances at the Bijou Theatre on Broadway. The play and novel explore the current state of corruption in Washington politics, an honest southern senator beset by political bosses who plan to use him for their own gain.         J. M. Barrie.

London: 1909 - Image size: 22 x 17.3 cm. Mount size: 45.7 x 27.8 cm. Framed in a hand finished black wooden frame. Light toning to mount otherwise in excellent condition. Monochrome photogravure tipped onto a white wove mount. Produced under the personal supervision of Coburn on his own copper plate press. Proof before letters (no printed plate number or facsimile signature). J. M. Barrie titled to the foot of the mount in Coburn's hand. Tipped on to a much larger mount than that published in "Men of Mark". Coburn's first book of portraits "Men of Mark" was published in 1911 (it was followed some years later by More Men of Mark) features 33 portraits of artists, thinkers and writers such as George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, Henry James, Auguste Rodin, Henri Matisse, Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Frank Brangwyn, William Butler Yeats, Robert Bridges etc. Coburn's introductory text provides a running commentary on his pursuit of his subjects and their eventual capture on film. 'To make satisfactory photographs of persons it is necessary for me to like them, to admire them, or at least to be interested in them. It is rather curious and difficult to exactly explain, but if I dislike my subject it is sure to come out in the resulting portrait. I had thought of using 'Men of Genius' as the title for this book, but Arnold Bennett objected seriously, saying, very modestly, that he did not consider himself a man of genius, but merely a working author, and absolutely refusing to join the throng unless I changed it, so I told him that if he would give me a better one I would use it. 'Men of Mark' is his alternative. '

The Heart of the Antarctic . [With:] The Antarctic Book

William Heinemann, London 1909 - Publisher's vellum with gilt sign of the penguin on each cover (Heart of the Antarctic) or publisher's vellum-backed boards (Antarctic Book), spines lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut Copy number 11 of 300 numbered sets, with the rare third volume signed by Shackleton and the members of the Shore Party: "one of the most handsome productions in the Antarctic canon" (Rosove). Shackleton's monumental 1907-09 Nimrod Expedition is best remembered for his crossing the Trans-Antarctic mountain range, making the first ascent and survey of Mount Erebus, and coming within a hundred miles of the South Pole. He "began working on The Heart of the Antarctic soon after the party's return to New Zealand" in August 1909 and the work was published just a few months later. "The book was an instant success . Nothing was spared by the publisher and printer to style the volumes as beautifully as possible . [Shackleton's] narrative is one of the most compelling in the Antarctic literature" (Rosove). As usual, the present set includes the second corrected issue of The Antarctic Book (see Rosove for a detailed explanation on the error in typesetting to the first issue). This volume is, of course, most famous for the autographs of 16 members of the expedition: Ernest Shackleton; Sir Philip Brocklehurst; Bernard Day; Ernest Joyce; Dr. A. F. Mackay; Dr. Eric Marshall; G E. Marston; James Murray; Raymond Priestley; William Roberts; Frank Wild; Aeneas Lionel Acton Mackintosh; Bertram Armitage; William C. Roberts; Edgeworth David; and Douglas Mawson. "The most luxurious publication ever to have appeared during the 'heroic age' of Antarctic exploration" (Taurus). This set exceptionally clean. Rosove 305.A2; Books on Ice 7.4; Spence 1096; Taurus 57. (8 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches). Half-titles. 224 plates (including portrait frontispieces in vols. 1 and 2, 12 mounted colour plates after George Marston in vols. 1 and 2, and a folding panorama and 3 folding maps in a pocket in the rear of vol. 2). Double-page in front of Antarctic Book containing 16 autograph signatures of each member of the Shore Party plus Mackintosh. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Decorative borders to plates and leaves.Publisher's off white buckram, front cover and spine pictorially stamped in gilt, decorative endpapers. Slight foxing to edges of text block otherwise a near fine copy.In his autobiography, George Doran, the book's American publisher, noted "In point of excellence of art, popularity, distinction and profit the crowning achievement... was the publication of the Fitzgerald version of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám illustrated by Edmund Dulac. The book was a joy and a treasure. Its public acceptance was immediate and great."Continuing, Mr. Doran recalled the following amusing incident: "Over the weekend Mr. Hodder had taken occasion to read for the first time Omar's Rubaiyat; also for the first time he had reviewed the art of Edmund Dulac…fresh from the exhausting exhilaration of an evangelically active Sabbath, he thrust himself into the office and presence of [Hodder's grandson and the firm's manager] J.E.H.W. In his shaking hand he held a copy of Dulac's Omar Khayyam…Mr. Hodder: 'Ernest, what is this pagan book you have dared to publish over my imprint?'J.E.H.W.: 'Why Grandad, that is one of the greatest classics of all time.'Mr. Hodder: 'Classic or no classic, I will not tolerate the publication of such heathen rubbish.'J.E.H.W.: 'Grandad, it is beautifully illustrated by one of the very great artists of our day - it is a proud production.'Mr. Hodder: ' The artist only abets the author, whoever he is, in the production of a purely pagan and disgusting book. I will have none of it.'J.E.H.W.: 'But, Grandad, we made a profit of £800 on that book in the last twelve months.'"Mr. Hodder's anger cooled, his indignation evaporated. The matter was settled.Hughey 21a.
