Neat ink name on front free end-paper, spine slightly darkened and 'mottled' otherwise a very fine copy. (Publishers' note). After the tragic death of his twin brother and collaborator, Edward Detmold concentrated his talents on books, primarily of flowers and animals: “Detmold’s finest plates are those produced for The Fables of Aesop (1909), The Life of the Bee (1911), and Hours of Gladness (1912), the latter with texts after Maurice Maeterlinck, the Belgian poet, naturalist, and mystic…A painting of chrysanthemums, contained in Hours of Gladness, is a glorious acknowledgement of the artist's debt to William Morris and Burne-Jones” (David Larkin, The Fantastic Creatures of Edward Julius Detmold).

Artemis to Actaeon and other verse.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1909. Octavo. Original dark green ribbed cloth, gilt lettered spine, gilt lettered front cover within a neo-classical cartouche, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom-made solander box. A few nicks and chips to periphery of jacket (small portion missing from front panel). An excellent copy. First edition, first printing of Wharton's second book of poetry; her first, Verses (printed in 1878), is unprocurable. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on on the front free endpaper: "Matilda Gay from Edith 1909". A particularly attractive association copy: Matilda and Walter Gay were American expatriates in France whose social circle included Wharton, Henry James and many other artists (see William Rieder, Charmed Couple: The Art and Life of Walter & Matilda Gay, 2000). Walter Gay, described as "the dean of American artists in Paris", supplied an illustration for The Book of the Homeless (New York 1916), edited by Wharton. Matilda Gay was a particularly close friend of Wharton's, in fact the last letter that the author wrote, a few days before her death, was to Matilda Gay. "Mostly, Matilda Gay and Edith Wharton saw eye-to-eye. Matilda thought her an 'intelligent, brilliant woman', and their Franco-American ideas were remarkably close... They both preferred the Hôtel Crillon to the Ritz, thought men made better talkers at dinner-parties, believed in Dreyfus's innocence, disliked modern art, ran their houses with great efficiency, and adored eighteenth-century furniture, antique-collecting, motor-flights through France, and dogs" (Hermione Lee, Edith Wharton, 2013, p. 273). Copies in the dust jacket are most uncommon.

An imposing vintage sepia-toned gelatin silver portrait photograph of a young Aboriginal woman smoking a pipe. It is still on its original mount (external dimensions 268 x 268 mm), with a brown matt cut to display a circular image 210 mm in diameter

      - The photograph is positioned so that the finished product presents as a diamond shape; it is both unusual and effective. Both the matt and photograph are in fine condition. The details of the photographer, 'Chas P. Scott, Waymouth Street, Adelaide', are blindstamped in the bottom right-hand corner of the matt. He is listed as a photographer at that address in South Australian directories 'from 1909 to 1915+' (Photohistory SA website). We have previously handled another example of this photograph, captioned 'Clara of Oodnadatta', and we know it appears on the front cover of one variant of 'Native Legends' by David Unaipon (Adelaide, [1929]). The photograph probably dates from the 1920s. Use [Ask Bookseller a Question] option below to confirm availability.

        SONNETS

[No place]: Privately Printed, 1909. Quarto. Quarter white cloth backed blue-grey paper over boards. Corners slightly bruised, tiny ink blot and a few thumb smudges at extreme fore-edge of upper board, collector's bookplate (by Rockwell Kent) on front pastedown, but a very good or better copy. First edition thus, being one of fifty copies printed on handmade paper for private distribution by the author. As often in copies of this book, there is a textual alteration in Sassoon's hand in the poem, "Immortality" on p.11. With Sassoon's presentation inscription on the front free endsheet: "To Mr. W.L. Mollison - with kindest regards from Siegfried Sassoon October '09." An excellent association copy: Mollison was the senior tutor at Clare, who having read some of Sassoon's poems in manuscript, encouraged him to enter the competition for the Chancellor's medal, and to undertake publication, leading to the privately printed POEMS of 1906 (see Egremont, p.33). Of the seventeen sonnets printed herein, six are new and eleven appear in "drastically" revised form from their appearance in the earlier SONNETS AND VERSES (1909), which was destroyed by Sassoon but for two or three copies. Ten of these sonnets were again reprinted in 1911, but again in considerably revised form. KEYNES A4.

[Autograph Letter, Signed ("S.L. Clemens"), to Mrs. Hookway]

Stormfield, Redding, CT, 1909. two panels of a folded oblong quarto sheet of letterhead. In ink, ca. 200 words. Mounted, with upper outer corner of first panel torn away, costing the year, and one word and a couple of letters; tanned from having been framed at some point, with a group of small drop-marks on upper panel, not affecting legibility, otherwise good. To "Dear Mrs. Hookway," evidently a teacher involved in the staging of children's dramatic productions: "I have been deeply moved [by] your letter ... you must be the happies[t] woman 'on live' - to borrow the quaint phrase of the Arthur-Tales - because you are so NEAR to the children; so near to so MANY children; so haloed with them, so submerged in them, so sat round about with a glory of them ... If I were going to begin life over again I would have a Children's Theatre, & watch it, & work for it, & see it grow, & blossom, & bear its rich moral & intellectual fruitage; & I should get more pleasure, & a saner & healthier profit, out of my vocation than I should ever be able to get out of any other, constituted as I am ...." He praises an article about her endeavor that he has read, and thanks her in anticipation of receipt of some photographs she is sending. Signed: "Sincerely Yours S.L. Clemens."

New York: The Century Company, 1909 - 4 volumes, quarto. Recent burgundy morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Small remnant alongside the gutter from the original front free endpaper to the verso of the frontispiece in volume 1, an excellent copy. Colour frontispiece and numerous monochrome illustrations. First published in 1896. William Milligan Sloane was professor of history at Princeton University, and editor of both the Political Science Quarterly and the American Historical Review. In conversation, the late John Sandler, pre-eminent British Napoleonic collector, revealed that Sloane had been the cornerstone of his remarkable collection, purchased by him at the age of 7 from a bouquiniste on the Embankment.

HEART OF THE ANTARCTIC: Being the Story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909

London: William Heinemann, 1909. 2 volumes. First edition. Portrait frontispiece, 12 color plates, numerous black and white plates, 3 maps and panoramas in rear pocket. Tall, thick 8vo, publisher?s original dark blue cloth with silver pictorial vignette and lettering on upper covers, spine lettered in gilt, t.e.g. xlviii, 371; xv, 419 (including extensive appendices, index). A very good and handsome set. The spine panels with some mellowing and a bit of chipping at the head and tail. SCARCE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF ERNEST SHACKLETON?S FAMOUS 2-YEAR EXPEDITION AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK IN THE ANTARCTIC OEUVRE. Shackleton?s narrative of the ?Nimrod? voyage and expedition of 1907-1909 is not only one of the classics of Polar exploration, but a great read in its own right. Shackleton had three goals for the mission and divided the company into three groups: one would set out to reach the Pole, another to plant a flag at the South Magnetic Pole, and the third to explore the Ross Barrier. This ambitious program was kept faithfully in the foreground, and although it was not possible to fulfill every detail of it, the mission is regarded as a a triumphant success. ?Men go out into the void spaces of the world for various reasons. Some are incited simply by a love of adventure, some have a keen thirst for scientific knowledge, and others are drawn away from trodden paths by the ?lure of little voices,? the mysterious fascination of the unknown. I think that in my own case it was a combination of these factors that determined me to try my fortune once again in the frozen south... ?The DISCOVERY expedition [1901-1903] had brought back a great store of information, and had performed splendid service in several important branches of science. I believed that a second expedition could carry the work still further. ...The southern limits of the Great Ice Barrier plain had not been defined... It was important to the scientific world that information should be gained regarding the movement of the ice-sheet that forms the Barrier. Then I wanted to discover what lay beyond the mountains to the south of latitude 82 17? and whether the Antarctic continent rose to a plateau similar to the one found by Captain Scott beyond the western mountains.? Shackleton goes on to discuss the possibilities for discoveries in the fields of meteorology, zoology, mineralogy and general geology, atmospheric electricity, tidal movements, hydrography, etc. The work as a whole touches upon all these fields and more, providing an extensive account of Shackleton?s Antarctic adventure from the preparation and supplies to accounts of daily travel and discovery. A copy preserved in its original decorated cloth bindings of this increasingly scarce set.

ANN VERONICA (First Edition, Inscribed and in Original 1909 Dust Jacket)

London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1909. Wells, H. G. Wells. ANN VERONICA. A Modern Love Story. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1909. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET, INSCRIBED. ANN VERONICA was Wells' most infamous novel which, of all his hundred plus published works, caused the most public outrage and condemnation. The publisher's brick-red volume is bright and nearly fine save for some shelf-wear and two tiny spots of discoloration to the very bottom edge. The exceedingly rare dust jacket (first we've seen) is complete; it has been reinforced with archival tape on the inside as three inner folds have split and it also sports three evenly-spaced pieces of tape (now dried and inoffensive) on each of the flaps. Despite the DJ's fragile nature, it has commendable shelf appeal. INSCRIBED on the title page by the author to Willard Wiener (1900-1982), the American author who wrote "Four Boys and a Gun" in 1944, later adapted as a film noir. Using the printed title of "Ann Veronica. A Modern Love Story" as a preface to his holograph inscription, Wells continues thus in black ink: "which scandalized England in 1909 & seems very mild stuff indeed (after Hemingway and all that)/ to Willard Wiener in 1940." Underneath signed in full "H. G. Wells." A compelling inscription; the mention of Hemingway seems (at least to us) both remarkable and especially desirable. ANN VERONICA created indignation and furor in 1909 because of the feminist actions and attitudes of the heroine and also because of the affair Wells was having with Amber Reeves, the woman who inspired the novel's eponymous character. It was considered a scandalous novel by many (not just because the "sinners" were granted a happy ending) and was denounced as "capable of poisoning the minds of those who read it" according to one appalled contemporary reviewer. Hammond A5. From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G. Wells, with McMurtry's bookplate.. Inscribed By Author. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/Very Good.
