        Personae.

London: Elkin Mathews, 1909 - Octavo. Original brown boards, titles to spine and front board gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Light rubbing to spine ends, joints starting from the top, internally fine, an excellent copy. Publisher's device to title page in red. First edition, one of around 500 copies under the original separate issue, this in Gallup's earlier binding with spine titles measuring 20 mm, as opposed to the later with 15 mm titles. Personae is Pound's first regular book (the two preceding works, A Lume Spento and A Quinzaine for this Yule, having being printed at Pound's own expense in small numbers (100 copies apiece), and now rare (fewer than 30 survive of each, many fewer in private hands). It was published at the expense of the publisher in an edition of 1,000, but the collection sold slowly, and in 1913 Elkin Mathews issued the remaining sheets – around 500 – as a combined issue bound together with remaining sheets of Pound's Exaltations.         Der Kleine König; Ein Märchen.

München; Georg W. Dietrich. [1909]. Landscape 4to. Original dove grey cloth-backed pale grey boards, boldly and pictorially blocked in black, blue, and gilt to upper cover, olive green Art Nouveau endpapers, preserved in original buff dustwrapper pictorially panelled and lettered in black; pp. [iv] + 24; strikingly illustrated with 12 stylish and chalky coloured lithographs in Art Nouveau style, all beautifully illuminated in sparkling gilt; an exceptional copy; externally near fine with only minor shelf wear to lower edges of boards, internally pristine with only one small and insignificant scuff mark to a lower margin, protected by a remarkably good copy of the rare dustwrapper which has small loss to head of spine (20 x 25mm), chipping to tail and corners, some (largely closed) splits to flap folds, corner creasing to upper flap and a few closed edge tears (longest 80mm), now all neatly and archivally repaired to the reverse using paper tabs or archival tissue; a remarkable survival in the dustwrapper. First edition of this masterpiece of Art Nouveau illustration and colour printing and one of the finest children's books of its period. The original edition is far superior to later ones and the lithographic printing in twelve colours is dramatic. The dustwrapper is rare. We have not seen another and, at the time of cataloguing, we are unable to trace any other examples on the market or in sales histories. The Viennese artist Hanns Pellar (1886-1971) was drawn from his initial career path in the military to pursue artistic ambitions, studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1905 under Heinrich Lefler. The following year he attended artist's school in Munich where he was taught by Franz von Stuck. The influence of Gustav Klimt is evident in his work, especially in the blocked areas of printed gold. His style of closely worked, elongated strokes in juxtaposed and contrasting hues results, as here, in a richly coloured and complex flickering tone which is given additional energy by the inclusion of printed gilt, causing the picture to shimmer on the page. This effect is particularly impressive in the image of the king with the fiery cauldron which plays tricks on the mind's eye and appears to shower sparks from the page. Pellar's technique is in direct contrast to the block formality of the Jugendstil style.

Histologie du systčme nerveux. 4 vols. First ed. in French. Library buckram

Paris: Maloine, 1909. Ramon y Cajal, Santiago (1852-1934). Histologie du systčme nerveux de l'homme et des vertébrés. Translated from the Spanish by Dr. L. Azoulay. 2 vols. in 4. xiv, 986; [2], 993, [5]pp. Numerous text illustrations, some in color. Paris: A. Maloine, 1909-11. 263 x 167 mm. Library buckram. Upper corners of volume titles torn away, not affecting text, light toning, but very good. Bookplate in Vol. I. First Edition in French, revised and enlarged by the author. Originally published in Spanish between 1899 and 1904 (the Spanish edition is extremely rare), Ramon y Cajal's comprehensive analysis of all parts of the vertebrate nervous system "must rank as a classic of medical science. This massive work, more than any other, contains the cytological and histological foundations of modern neurology" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Cajal proved many of the connections between one section of the brain and another, and he illustrated these, as well as the many connections one cell makes with others. He described many nerve cells for the first time and also pointed out the plasticity of nerve cells in the brain, a discovery that has only recently come to be appreciated. Cajal's research confirmed the neuron doctrine; his classification of neurons provided a histological basis for cerebral localization. His descriptions of the cerebral cortex are still the most authoritative, and led directly to the cytoarchitectonics of Campbell, etc. He set up the problem of synaptic transmission and developed the theory of dynamic polarization, with transmission of the nerve impulse from dendrites and cell body to axon. He developed new staining techniques, such as the reduced silver nitrate method for displaying neurofibrils. His work overturned concepts of the nervous system that had held sway for over a century, that is since the beginning of investigation with the microscope. In 1906, two years after publication of the Textura, Ramon y Cajal was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine, sharing the prize with Golgi, who, even at this late date tried to dispute Cajal's neuron doctrine in his Nobel lecture. Garrison / McHenry 168-69. Norman, Grolier Medical Hundred (1995) 86. See Garrison-Morton 1293.1. The revised French translation of Cajal's work was translated into English as Histology of the Nervous System by N. and L.W. Swanson (2 vols., Oxford, 1994). Swanson points out in his introduction to the translation that this masterwork, produced with only primitive tools and Cajal's exceptional brilliance, contains many more discoveries than had previously been attributed to it.

Macon Cook Book. A Collection of Recipes. Tested principally by members of Benson-Cobb Chapter, Wesleyan College Alumnae, Macon, Georgia.

Macon, GA, J. W. Burke Company, 1909. - 8vo. 284, (22) pp., interleaved and with numerous blank verso pages as issued. Publisher's original giltstamped burgundy cloth. First edition, signed and dated on the flyleaf by Ai-ling Soon in the year of publication: "E-Ling Soon '09, Wesleyan College". Ai-ling Soong was the eldest of the three Soong sisters, the most famous women in China in the first half of the 20th century. Their father, himself educated at Vanderbilt and Duke, sent all three of his daughters to Wesleyan College, the liberal arts women's college in Macon, Georgia. Upon graduation in 1909, Ai-ling returned to China and became secretary to Sun Yat-sen, a close friend of their father's. When she left that position, her younger sister Ching-ling Soong took the job, eventually marrying Sun Yat-sen, who was to become the first president and founding father of the Republic of China. While Mei-ling, the youngest sister, married Chiang Kai-shek, commander of the Chinese armies and later himself President, Ai-ling was to marry H. H. Kung, the Finance Minister and the wealthiest man in China. The sisters were the subject of a widely-read 1941 book, as well as of a 1997 film. - The community cookbook, containing "five hundred good old Southern recipes", soon became so identified with the region as to be named "Macon's Official Souvenir" by the Macon City Council in 1912. Among the recipes - many attributed - are Okra Soup, Oyster Loaf, Belted Smelts, Spoon Pone, Corn Dodger, Rice Waffles, and Chicken Gumbo; there are also instruictions on how servants ought to present and remove dishes. - Slight edge toning to text block; insignificant rubbing to binding. This copy lacks the cancel leaf 270a which was inserted into the index after printing in order to include the "Desserts" section, which had been inadvertently dropped by the printer: likely, the present copy was distributed before the error was caught. Bittner 575. Cook 53. Brown 508. Not in Cagle. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Histologie du système nerveux. 4 vols. First ed. in French. Library buckram

Maloine, Paris 1909 - Ramon y Cajal, Santiago (1852-1934). Histologie du système nerveux de l'homme et des vertébrés. After early aspirations of a military life he became an artist, and worked in Ipswich alongside artists such as Robert Burrows, and his brother Thomas (1825-1906). In 1840 Smythe moved to Norwich, and is said to have worked with John Sell Cotman. He was undoubtedly influenced by several Norwich School artists, such as his friend Frederick Ladbrooke. His work attracted commissions from eminent patrons such as the Earl of Cardigan, and the Greene family.

Recollections of a Long Life ... With Additional Extracts from the Private Diaries. Edited by his Daughter Lady Dorchester.

London, John Murray, 1909-11. Six volumes in 8vo. ........................, titles printed in red and black, six photogravure portraits, and a few others; volume one with light traces of humidity to front cover, otherwise a very good set; provenance: Very rare complete set in the publisher's binding of all six volumes of the recollections and diary excerpts of Byron's travelling companion and friend. 'At Cambridge Hobhouse founded a whig club and became the close friend of Byron, with whom in 1809 he travelled across Portugal and Spain to Gibraltar. From Malta he and Byron were encouraged by English naval and diplomatic intelligence to travel into Albania, where they stayed with Ali Pasha from 19 to 23 October 1809; an English naval force meanwhile took over most of the Ionian Islands, a fact on which Ali congratulated them. They then went into Greece, where they were surprised to discover considerable anti-Turkish feeling among the inhabitants. They based themselves in Athens, visiting Marathon on 24 January, and then went via Smyrna to Constantinople, where they attended an audience with Sultan Mahmoud II on 10 July. On 31 October 1809 Hobhouse recorded in his diary, "Byron is writing a long poem in the Spenserian stanza" - the first reference to Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (BL, Add. MS 56527, fol. 65r). Prior to its publication Hobhouse had regarded Byron as his poetic equal. Lines 247-62 in the first edition of English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809) are by him. In their absence from England, Hobhouse's anthology Imitations and Translations was published, containing several poems by Byron. On returning Hobhouse published a comic poem, The Wonders of a Week at Bath, and his account of their eastern tour, A Journey through Albania, and other Provinces of Turkey, went through two printings' (ODNB). In 1815 he was best man at Byron's wedding with Annabella Millbanke. 'Hobhouse was loyal to Byron throughout the separation from Annabella, drawing up "a full and scrupulously accurate account" of the events. This was printed privately in 1870 in the wake of the Beecher Stowe controversy, and reprinted in Recollections of a Long Life (2.191-366)' (ODNB). Hobhouse became executor of the poet after his untimely death. The rarity of complete sets is due to the fact that the first two volumes came out in 1909 with the note on the title in two volumes. Volume III and the remaining ones, published in 1910 and 1911 state in four volumes. The politically risky contents of Hobhouse's recollections (he had been a leading radical of his time) probably accounts for the rarity of even incomplete sets.

The Heart of the Antarctic. Being the Story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909. With an Introduction by Hugh Robert Mill. An Account of the First Journey to the South Magnetic Pole by Professor T.W. Edgeworth David.

London: William Heinemann, 1909.. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, quarto (24x18cm), pp.xlviii; 372; pp.xvi; 419; [1]. Portrait of E. H. Shackleton as frontispiece to first volume, with portrait of the Northern Party at the South Magnetic Pole to second volume. Both are protected with captioned tissue guards. Generously illustrated throughout with photographic plates and diagrams, in addition to several plates in colour. Half dark blue morocco, cloth sides, gilt titles, t.e.g., folding maps in pouch at rear of vol. II. Light spotting, exterior unmarked. A very good copy in an attractive recent leather binding. A comprehensive work, filled with a mass of maps, photographs and sketches which chronicle the expedition. This item truly embodies the golden age of polar exploration. Although the expedition team was unable to attain its goal of reaching the South Pole, Shackleton and his companions reached 88° 23' S, a point only 180 kilometres (112 mi) from the Pole. Accomplishments also included: the first ascent of Mount Erebus, the location of the Magnetic South Pole by Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David and MacKay (January 16, 1909), and the discovery of the Beardmore Glacier passage (named after Shackleton's patron). The group was the first to cross the Trans-Antarctic mountain range, and to set foot on the South Polar Plateau. Subsisting on half-rations, Shackleton discovered the party's salvation – a letter declaring that Nimrod would sail on February 26, 1909. In response, the crew burnt the camp to attract the departing ship's attention. The plan succeeded, and on March 1, 1909, Shackleton departed for home and returned to the United Kingdom a hero. He was knighted for reaching the furthest south of any human at that time. Regarding the failure to reach the South Pole, Shackleton remarked to his wife: "Better a live donkey than a dead lion.". It would be three more years before Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first to reach the South Pole, followed shortly by Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition.
