[Photo Album]: Philadelphia and Portland Limited Express

Philadelphia. 1908. Oblong octavo. Measuring 5" x 7". Black cloth photo album with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 21 sepia toned photographs measuring 3.5" x 5" with captions. The album is very good with a crack in the center gutter, containing about fine photos. Images of a boat trip on the Philadelphia and Portland Limited Express around 1908, collected and captioned by Lemuel Sponagle, who claims the journey made "one stop only". The photos capture the travelers as well as the captain and men working aboard the vessel at the wheel, in the rigging, and looking at the sea via binoculars "locating a light ship," all in beautiful photographs taken by Sponagle, presumably an enlightened amateur photographer. Included are two photos of a woman, one her sitting with her back to the camera wrapped in a heavy coat captioned, "lost in thought." Also included are photos of passing ships captioned, "touring up the Delaware," and "our assistant down the Delaware." A unique archive of photographs from the early 1900s displaying travel by boat in wonderful quality photographs. .

Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon & Andes being records of travel on the Amazon and its tributaries, the Trombetas, Rio Negro, Uaupés, Casiquiari, Pacimoni, Huallaga, and Pastasa; as also to the cataracts of the Orinoco, along the eastern side of the Andes of Peru and Ecuador, and the shores of the Pacific, during the years 1849–1864. Edited and condensed, with a biographical introduction, portrait, seventy-one illustrations and seven maps. In two volumes.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1908 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. With the small ownership stamp of Roger Perry and a bookplate recording his donation to the Spruce memorial plaque installed at Coneysthorpe, Yorkshire in 1971. Roger Perry (1933–2016) was director of the Charles Darwin Research Station, Galapagos, from 1964 to 1970. Spines a little faded and worn at ends, browning to endpapers, still a very good copy. Portrait frontispiece, 71 illustrations, 7 maps (the last folding). First edition. One of Wallace's later works was this edition of the botanical papers and diaries of his friend and co-Amazonian explorer Richard Spruce, who had died in 1894. "This work best reflects [Spruce's] gift for analysis, description, and narrative, along with his dry humour" (ODNB). Spruce had been sent to South America in 1849 by Hooker, Bentham, and other botanists; Bentham was to receive, name, and distribute the plants he sent home. Towards the end of the year Spruce travelled up the Amazon to Santarém, at the mouth of the Tapajos, where he met Wallace and the lepidopterist Henry Walter Bates. Spruce spent three years on the rivers Negro and Orinoco, entering Venezuela and discovering many plants new to science, including 200 species of fungi in the rain forest of the Uapes. His travels were interrupted in 1852 when he returned to the River Negro to assist Wallace, who had been struck down by malaria, and oversee his safe passage down river. After extensive travels, Spruce remained on the Pacific coast until 1864, when he lost his entire capital in the collapse of a Peruvian bank. He returned to England in 1867 after an absence of 18 years. The work stands as a landmark of ethnobotany. Among Spruce's discoveries were a number of plants with medicinal properties, including the datura and coca plants. (It was his samples of the latter, sent to Berlin, which helped Dr Nieman isolate the active principle of the alkaloid cocaine in 1858.) Spruce also made the first detailed reports of ayahuasca and yopo and the ceremonial usage of these hallucinogenic plants. (See Schultes & Hofmann, Plants of the Gods, for numerous references to Spruce.) Howgego, S41. [Attributes: First Edition]

The images are after designs by eminent 19th century Rimpa artists, and printed by Unsodo while at the height of their considerable powers. This is a complete set (it is almost never found complete nowadays) in good impressions and colors, in a rather weak, clasped chitsu with printed set title label.         Typed Letter, signed, dated September 16, 1908. To G. M. Phillips of West Chester, Pennsylvania

1908. Very Good. One page (135 words) on a single letter-sized sheet (21.5cm. x 28cm.). No letterhead (sent from New York City). Blue type. Minor soil. Old fold marks. Minor corner chip. Phillips was Secretary of the Pennsylvania State Educational Commission. BTW is responding to a letter which apparently asked for his views on the matter of separate race schools in Pennsylvania. Instead he suggests that prominent Pennsylvania African Americans be consulted and suggests the names of four such individuals (all of whom were editors of African American journals or newspapers). Also included is the carbon copy of a short letter from Phillips thanking BTW for his letter.

Included are two photos of a woman, one her sitting with her back to the camera wrapped in a heavy coat captioned, "lost in thought." Also included are photos of passing ships captioned, "touring up the Delaware," and "our assistant down the Delaware." A unique archive of photographs from the early 1900s displaying travel by boat in wonderful quality photographs. .

        Renault 1908

Paris: M.M., 1908. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some minor foxing in the margins and a 1" tear in the lower margin. This is the Coal-Shovel nosed Renault, which was very popular and successful in 1906 and 1907. In 1908, the car was less formidable, but could reach speeds of 100 miles per hour. Hungarian Francois Szisz drove his last race for Renault in 1908, in this beautiful car.`The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Tennis.Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries.Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.
