BY SALT MARSHES: PICTURES AND POEMS OF OLD IPSWICH

1908. Fine. DOW, Arthur Wesley & Everett Stanley HUBBARD. BY SALT MARSHES: PICTURES AND POEMS OF OLD IPSWICH. Ipswich: Privately printed, 1908. No. 103 of approximately 200. [32] pp. 8vo. Quarter brown cloth (unmarked) with color illustrated (front cover only) paper covered boards. Covers worn but still attractive; interior near fine, small pencil numerals to front pastedown. Eight lovely color woodblock illustrations, with other monochrome and two color designs/headpieces. "BY SALT MARSHES is Arthur Wesley Dow's tribute to the old North Shore town of Ipswich, where he was born and spent most of his life, and to his boyhood friend, Everett Stanley Hubbard. It is a collaboration somewhat in the spirit of Meteyard, Carman and Hovey in their Vagabondia books, though Hubbard was undoubtedly a lesser poet and Dow a greater artist. BY SALT MARSHES is his masterpiece, and it is evident from the numerous sketches and proofs in the Ipswich Historical Society and the Society for Preservation of New England Antiquities - some dating back as far as 1895 - that it was a labor of love. Infinite care and craftsmanship were expended on every detail. The illustrations are color woodblock prints, such as Dow described in an article in MODERN ART (1896), entitled "Painting with Wooden Blocks." This was a technique Dow had discovered in the course of his study of Japanese art, and he was a master of it, using as many as four or five different blocks, accurately registered, thinly inked to show the grain of the wood, and printed in subtle gradations of tone to achieve a luminosity that effectively evokes the quality of the light on the marshes. Although the text is printed from small gothic type, the lettering on the cover and title page was also cut by hand in woodblocks, after the manner of Meteyard and Dawson-Watson's lettering for the COURIER INNOCENT (1897)." Finlay - Artists of the Book in Boston, 1890-1910.

        Marshall-Wells Hardware Co

Portland, OR.: Marshall-Wells Co.. No date. Ca. 1908.. Illustrated throughout in black and white and color, paging is not sequential but book is 5 1/2 inches thick, indexes, 12 x 11 inches, bound in a manufacturer-issued expandable binder (cloth covered boards with leather corners and spine) now missing front cover, part of spine missing, very worn and soiled, first page stained and missing lower right 1/4, first five pages with creasing and chipping to edges. Dampstaining affecting lower edge of some pages. Many of the paint samples have been removed, all but one of the sheets of sample wrapping paper have been torn out, occasional soiling, tears and paper loss to interior pages (see further description below), but in general the interior is still very tight and in good condition. Because it has been assembled from individual catalog sections the paging is not sequential eg. jumps from 2942 at end of cutlery department to 2999 at beginning of Sporting Goods, one side of one page is 2193 and the other side 2198. This is a compendium of Marshall-Wells catalogues gathered in an expandable binder for use in a store. The following sections are included, each with index: Saddlery hardware; Saddles, Collars, Harness; Fishing Tackle and Bicycle Goods; Sporting Goods Department; Cutlery Department; Mine, R.R. and Mill Supplies; Stove Department; House Furnishings; Paint Department; Farming and Logging Tools; Tools and Heavy Hardware; Builders' Hardware. It starts with page 129 of the Builders' Hardware section. This section is very similar to another individually bound copy of this section I have examined which is dated 1906; however this store copy seems to be an enlarged version with pages 279-1 to 279-11 inserted, whereas the single bound copy does not have these extra pages. Some of the multitude of different items illustrated and priced are trunks, horse blanket labels (5 pages in color of which 1/3 of one page is missing), all kinds of equipment for horses including boots, bridles and many many pages of harnesses, saddles (including ladies' side saddle and ladies' Australian astride saddles), bicycles, fishing equipment including baits etc (one of two color pages of wooden minnows is 2/3 torn out), 5 color pages of hammocks, row boats and canoes, croquet sets, 12 pages of baseball equipment, baby carriages, sleds (2 pages in color, one with long tear and paper loss at top left corner and in price area), skates, guns, revolvers and other shooting equipment including Remington and Winchester, office supplies, watches, harmonicas, toy banks, clocks (including cuckoo clocks and mission clocks and two color pages of Sessions mantle clocks), silverware, cut glass, cutlery, some very elaborate Art Nouveau design coal stoves, cooking stoves, iron bedsteads, spittoons, bird cages, wagons and buggies, logging tools, axes (18 color pages), tile roofing, ornamental steel ceilings, store cabinets and counters, electric light and gas fixtures, Santa Claus electric lighting, door and cabinet hardware. Price list dated 4-24-08 inserted. An invaluable view into the consumer and social life of early 20th century America. .

Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz

Chicago: The Reilly & Britton Co.. 1908. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first state, 1908. Small 4to, sky blue cloth lettered in black with gold color pictorial onlay to front cover, yellow and black pictorial endpapers, color plates. A very good or better copy in an incredibly bright, tight fine binding; the only blemishes to this copy are a Christmas '08 inscription in black ink on verso of the 'This book belongs to' page, careful red hand coloring to most of the title words on the half title page, a small coffee-colored blotch to the lower outer edge of the half title and faint foxing or spottiness evident to color frontispiece and facing title page. Otherwise a lovely tight, bright copy (faintest hint of soil to rear board); we have rarely seen this title in such great shape.

        Chinese Mathematics Manuscript

Zhaoqing, 1908. Chinese manuscript manual for mathematics. 8vo. String-tied brown paper wrappers, titled in manuscript, measuring approximately 24 x 14,5cm. Contains 16 pages of text, in Chinese, and some diagrams, on 28 double leaf rice paper uniquely bound to create uncut edges, lined vertically in ink. Age-toning, chips to extremities, otherwise in very good condition. Together with a manuscript letter on delicate rice paper, single leaf measuring 11,5 x 25cm. Indication of moisture to corner margin, otherwise in excellent condition. Manuscript mathematics manual in Chinese, dates from the beginning of modern education, together with accompanying letter in a fine traditional calligraphy. The manuscript was one of a series of mathematics books, this being volume 4, belonging to Yan Yan, professor at a Zhaoqing Second Level School, for use in the winter of 1908. Its title, translated into English, is "Practical Exercises in Arithmetic Calculations" and it features a printed attendance register. At the time, great reforms were taking place in China's education system. Teachers and tutors were most likely producing at least some of their own materials, especially in attempting to preserve traditional curriculum, which was rapidly being superseded by foreign influenced works. In 1904, only four years prior, even the long-standing Imperial Civil Service Exam, the cornerstone of China's bureaucratic tradition, was abolished as a symbol of the end of traditional education system. The letter seeps with exuberance towards new opportunities brought forth by the recent and dramatic reformation of education in China. Penned by an educated, intellectual, and appropriately socialized young man named Zidong, who employs the traditional respect in addressing his friend who is slightly older than he, "my brother elder in years," it represents the dawn of prosperity for the young and ambitious men and women in China. The writer is in his late teen years, has lovely penmanship and keen interest in politics and communication. In this correspondence he mentions a reader's group which he is organizing, and reveals an enthusiastic interest in the writings of seventeenth century scholar Wang Fuzhi. He also confirms receipt of the Dagong Bao newspaper published in Tianjin, and makes the following comment (translated excerpts from the letter): "I had originally intended to subscribe to the paper together with Zizhen... In the modern age, if you don't read newspapers, you are blind and deaf." He further warns, "your humble brother has not determined yet if the affair we talked about will actually reach its goal..." The recipient, identified only as Tingnian, is involved with the writer in an ambiguously mentioned campaign, "an affair we mentioned earlier," possibly of political or intellectual controversy for this period of reform, or perhaps the forming of a private club to study Western ways. The traditional Chinese education system worked admirably for more than Traditional education centred around the civil service examination, an esteemed reward for high achievement, which provided only a small group of civilians a channel of upward social mobility in the bureaucrat class, while leaving the majority of society with very little ambition for education. Thus, the curriculum focused excessively on social science education, and overlooked the importance of natural science, mathematics, so on. In traditional China, instead of governments, local lineages and social elites played an extremely active role in providing schooling to children. The absence of public funding for education meant that schooling was still quite limited to middle class and rich families. Furthermore, the schooling system had no rigorous formal regulation, namely clear classification of grades and formal training for teachers. The informal home schooling was the most common education format witnessed in traditional China, and teachers were principally private tutors, directly engaged by the elders. However, at the turn of the 20th century, with increasing exposure to western imperial powers calling for industrialization, tradition was gradually replaced by western and modern education systems, and in 1904, the Imperial Civil Service Exam and its hierarchal status was dissolved. In 1911, the Qing Dynasty was overthrown by revolution, and a republican form of government was established. At that time, government completely abandoned the traditional way of education, replacing those with educational models from Europe, America and Japan. Prior to 1946, China had only 1,300 kindergartens, 289,000 primary schools and 4,266 secondary schools, which is not much considering the population. It was not until very recently, in 1978, with the adoption of the policy of reform and opening to the outside world, that basic education entered an era of real progress. .

Peking Collection - Twenty Eight Photographs by Hedda Hammer [Morrison]

(circa1940).. 28 black and white silver gelatin photographs of important Imperial sites in Peking. Images of The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Beihai, Coal Hill and Summer Palace are presented in their original mats. Each signed by Hedda Hammer on the mat just below the lower right corner of photograph. Some light even browning on mats, the photographs are in very good condition. Presented in a custom made cloth covered Chinese folding case with the initials F.W.B. embroidered on an upper flap. Toggle ties. The photographs measure 19 x 14.7cm and the matts 32 x 24.5cm. A very good collection. This is a stunning example of the type of collection that German Australian photographer Hedda Hammer Morrison prepared for wealthy clients. This collection features Imperial sites in Peking and includes images of places that are now no longer accessible to the public such as Yuquanshan or Jade Fountain Mountain which is now a resort for the Military Commission of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee. Hedda Morrison was a photographer of rare ability. Born in Germany in 1908 she did not study medicine, the path her parents would have liked her to have taken, but instead studied photography at the State Institute for Photography in Munich (1929-31). After graduating she worked as an assistant to photographers Adolf Lazi in Stuttgart and Olga Linckelmann in Hamburg. However as Nazi influence grew she became increasingly concerned about the direction Germany was moving in and decided to leave the country. An advertisment in a German photographic magazine led to her taking up the position of manager of Hartung's Photo Shop in Peking in 1933. While living in Peking she met Alastair Morrison, (the son of the Australian G.E. Morrison) and they were married in 1946. The couple left Peking that same year, living for a short period in Hong Kong and then in Sarawak where Alistair Morrison served as a District Officer for over 20 years. Hedda continued to take photographs throughout this period and significant collections of her work can now be found at Harvard, the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and National Gallery of Australia. The Morrison's moved to Canberra in 1967 where she lived until her death in 1991. This collection is a beautiful example of the work of Hedda Morrison. Hedda Morrison compiled collections are scarce on the market. [References: The Hedda Morrison Photographs of China, Harvard University Library; Powerhouse Museum and Dr Claire Roberts]. .

HISTORY OF THE INGENIOUS GENTLEMAN DON QUIXOTE OF LA MANCHA...translated from the Spanish, By F.A. Motteux

Edinburgh: John Grant, 1908. 4 volumes. Grant’s fine Library Edition, first edition thus. Richly illustrated throughout with 37 engravings designed and etched by Ad. Lalauze on tissue-guarded plates, engraved portrait of Cervantes at the beginning of Volume I. Tall, thick 8vo, in the publisher’s original brown cloth with paper labels printed in red and black on the spines, t.e.g., others untrimmed. xlii, 445; x, 484; xii, 512; xii, 508 pp. A very handsome set, very fine and seemingly unread and unused, the brown cloth with only extremely minor age evidence, paper labels a bit mellowed by time. A FINE AND HANDSOME SET WITH EXCELLENT ACADEMIC INCLUSIONS. A beautiful set of Cervantes and a very scarce edition edited by J.G. Lockhart who also wrote the included essay on the Life of Cervantes. Motteux’s translation is one of the most famous of the period, and here, the book is presented in lovely style. There is a fine ‘Life of Cervantes’ preceding the text and in addition, important and very copious notes on the text are appended. The content of the notes is of significant interest to the reader as they have been taken from the most important and scholarly editions prepared by Bowle, Pellicer and the Academy. In addition, significant content was gained from researching the old histories and chronicles with which the Spaniards of the 16th century were familiar. Thus, many of the period poetical nuances have here been included in English for the first time. Blackwood’s said of the translation that “This is, we think, out of all sight, the richest and the best. ... Motteux, the translator of Cervantes and Rabelais, possesses a native humour which no other translator that we ever met with has approached.” And William Prescott said that “The most popular versions in English are those of Motteux, Jarvis, and Smollett. Perhaps the first is the best of all. It was by a Frenchman who came over to England in the time of James the Second. It betrays nothing of its foreign parentage, however, while its rich and racy diction, and its quaint turns of expression, are admirably suited to convey a lively and very faithful image of the original. The slight tinge of antiquity, which belongs to the time, is not displeasing, and comports well with the tone of knightly dignity which distinguishes the hero.” Miscellanies, 1845
