Folio. Wrappers. 53 pp. score, 49 pp. solo part. Both the score and one copy of the solo part signed and inscribed by the composer to the Polish- Brazilian pianist and dedicatee of the work, Felicja Blumental (1908-1991) on the first page of both the score and one of the parts, the score with the autograph date Katowice, April 27, [19]72 and the part with the autograph date Lisbon Oct. 19, [19]72. Extensively annotated for performance in both pencil and ballpoint pen, quite likely in Blumental's hand. With additional annotations, corrections and additions in multi- coloured felt-tip pens which appear to be in Penderecki's hand. Wrappers worn and partially separated. First leaf of score torn with some loss to inscription; minor dampstaining; one copy of solo part yellowed and with old plastic tape to spine and corners throughout including outer edge of first leaf. . The Partita was commissioned by the Eastman School of Music where Blumental gave the first performance of the work on February 11, 1972 with Walter Hendl conducting the Eastman Philharmonic; she made a recording of the work in that same year and went on to perform it extensively. We would like to thank Professor Cindy Bylander for her kind assistance in the cataloguing of this item.

Land and Housing Reform by Winston S. Churchill, first edition first printing, bound in Pamphlets and Leaflets for 1907 Being the Publications for the Year of the Liberal Publication Department

London: The Liberal Publication Department, 1908. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Here is quite a rarity - significant both bibliographically and to collectors. This is a very early and seldom seen Churchill speech. On 20 April 1907, a young Winston S. Churchill gave a speech on Land and Housing Reform at Drury Lane Theatre in London. At the time, Churchill was a rising star of the Liberal Party serving as Under-Secretary for the Colonies under Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. This is the first edition, only printing of this speech. It is bound by the Liberal Publications Department in a volume containing speeches and pamphlets for the year 1907. Fascinating to note, this appears to be the only printing of the full text of this speech. The speech appears on pages 779 to 782 of Volume I of the Complete Speeches published in 1974, but this 1907 first printing of the speech contains significant amounts of text not included in the Complete Speeches presentation. Further, there are fascinating notes on the introduction of Winston Churchill and on the audience ("The theatre was crowded to its utmost capacity with an audience of 4,000 people.") There is even a notation in the text of a comment shouted from the audience and Churchill's reply. The volume in which the speech is bound contains pamphlets and leaflets published before 16 November 1907. Bound in a black leather pebble grain spine over green ribbed buckram covers, the book measures 8.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. It contains a table of contents indexing by subject the numerous bound pamphlets and leaflets. The book is a fascinating piece of history, containing pamphlets and leaflets of various shapes and sizes, many of which are folded in and, we imagine, are unlikely to now be found anywhere else given their fragility and ephemeral nature. Condition of the bound volume is very good. The leather spine shows minor wear, particularly at the head and tail, but retains bright gilt and shows no cracking to the leather. The green cloth top board is clean and bright with minor corner wear. The rear board has a bump to the lower corner and some small white spots, but is otherwise sound and bright. The contents, including the Churchill speech pamphlet, are in excellent condition. The binding is tight, the pages are exceptionally bright and clean, and the top edge retains bright gilt. There is no spotting and no inscriptions. What a very rare and exciting find for collectors. Bibliographic reference: Cohen D11, Woods A10.

House on the Borderland: From the Manuscript, discovered in 1877 by Messrs Tonnison and Berreggnog, in the Ruins that lie to the South of the Village of Kraighten, in the West of Ireland. Set out here, with Notes

London: Chapman and Hall, Ltd., 1908. London: Chapman and Hall, Ltd., 1908. First edition. Hardcover. 300pp. Octavo [19.5 cm] Red cloth with gilt stamped title and author on front board and backstrip. Good. Spine rolled, backstrip faded, covers rubbed. There is a small moisture stain on the backstrip, which obscures a bit of the title, and there is a 1/2 inch long split in the cloth at the head of the spine. The spine ends and the corners are bumped. The underlying boards are peeking through at the corners. There is a bookplate on front pastedown, cosmetic splitting to the hinges. There is a large loss from the fore edge margin of p. 79, not affecting the text. The pages are yellowed and have sporadic light foxing. Uncommon first edition of this classic of supernatural fiction. Precedes the Arkham House (American first) by 38 years. This novel is a classic example of the 'found journal' narrative (i.e. Lovecraft's Necronomicon or Danielewski's House of Leaves). The influence of Hodgson on supernatural fiction cannot be overstated. H.P. Lovecraft wrote: "...perhaps the greatest of all Mr. Hodgson's works .... The wanderings of the Narrator's spirit through limitless light-years of cosmic space and Kalpas of eternity, and its witnessing of the solar system's final destruction, constitute something almost unique in standard literature. And everywhere there is manifest the author's power to suggest vague, ambushed horrors in natural scenery. .....a classic of the first water." Bleiler p.101. Currey, p. 243 Reginald 07284. In "333.

Autograph Letter, signed ("Wyeth"), to Eric Pape

Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, nd. ca. 1908 - Wyeth writes to his former teacher Eric Pape to decline an invitation to move to Boston and teach at the Eric Pape School, where he had studied in 1901. "Extremely sorry at the turn of affairs. As sorry for disturbing any of your plans as for losing any opportunities. The fact that this fall promises to add another member to the Wyeth household and the fact that four large decorations for a western house I find will run into the winter makes it impossible to undertake that stupendous job of moving to Boston - [I] trust that I am not saying too much by adding , that I hope the future will see satisfactory arrangements carried out -" Wyeth did eventually change his mind and taught at Pape's school in 1909. The child referred to in the letter is likely artist Carolyn Wyeth (1909-1994) 4to. 2 pp. pen and ink on rectos of two sheets of Chadds Ford stationery.         NOTES OF A BOTANIST ON THE AMAZON & ANDES BEING RECORDS OF TRAVEL on the Amazon and it's tributaries, the Trombetas, Rio Negro, Uaup?s, Casiquaiari, Pacimoni, Huallaga, and Pastasa; as also to the Cataracts of the Orinoco, along the eastern side of the Andes of Peru and Ecuador, and the shores of the Pacific, during the years 1849-1864. Edited and condensed by Alfred Russel Wallace, OM., F.R.S. TWO VOLS. COMPLETE.

MacMillan and Co., Limited,, London: 1908 - 518 pp.; 542 pp. First edition; contemporary, green cloth; gold lettering stamped across the spine; top edge gilt; fp. with tissue guard; 71 illustrations; 7 maps (two fold-out). Vol. I: v-lii; 1-518; f.p. portrait Richard Spruce, PhD; Wallace's preface pp. v-ix; list of books and papers published by Spruce p. xlii. Vol. II: [v]-vii; [1]-542. Hinges starting vol. II; endpapers foxed both vols.; fp. foxed edges; spine faded; closed tears; see additional images provided. This work, along with Bates The Naturalist. . . and Wallace's own Amazon and Rio Negro. . . comprise the three most important works of Amazon natural history by 19th century English speaking naturalists. Quoting the Preface (by Wallace): "Shortly after Spruce's death, I offered to do what I could to put together a narrative of his travels from his Journals and letters, if, on examination of the materials, it seemed possible to do so. His executor, Mr. M.B. Slater, was anxious that I should undertake the duties of a literary executor; but, partly owing to both of us being fully occupied with our own affairs, it was only after a delay of eleven years that I was able to begin the preparation of the present volumes. The first eight chapters of Spruce's proposed Notes of a Botanist, etc. (as given on the title-page), had been carefully written out (in a large account-book) during his last years in South America, and were apparently ready for publication after being copied and finally corrected. With considerable condensation, this constitutes the first six chapters of the present work. The illustrations are mostly from Spruce's own pencil sketches and drawings. Most of the larger of these were in very delicate outline, but a few were highly finished; and from these, as indicating the type of scenery, the outlines have been shaded by a skilled artist under my directions, so as to produce very lifelike and attractive views in districts quite beyond the sphere of the travelling photographer. . . The beautiful portrait of Spruce forming the frontispiece was taken by a friend of Spruce's four years before his death. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Tempest

sp;- London - Chapman and Hall Ltd, 1908. sp;- London - Chapman and Hall Ltd, 1908 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An illustrated copy of Shakespeare's comedy The Tempest. With nineteen beautiful tipped-in coloured plates, backed with cartridge paper. There is no obvious single source for the plot of The Tempest, but researchers have seen parallels in Erasmus's Naufragium, Peter Martyr's De orbe novo, and an eyewitness report by William Strachey of the real-life shipwreck of the Sea Venture on the islands of Bermuda. In addition, one of Gonzalo's speeches is derived from Montaigne's essay Of the Canibales, and much of Prospero's renunciative speech is taken word for word from a speech by Medea in Ovid's poem Metamorphoses. Condition: In a red cloth binding. Externally sound, though with some dampstaining to the boards and some bumping and sunning also. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Pages are bright, though with some scattered spotting throughout. Overall: GOOD..

Partita for Harpsichord and Orchestra. Dyeline copy of the score and two copies of the solo part issued by B. Schott's Söhne in Mainz

. Folio. Wrappers. 53 pp. score, 49 pp. First leaf of score torn with some loss to inscription; minor dampstaining; one copy of solo part yellowed and with old plastic tape to spine and corners throughout including outer edge of first leaf..
