        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, 1908. London: Hodder and Stoughton,, 1908. With Sixty-One Illustrations from Photographs by the Author and Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Wilson, and Three Maps. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt, titles and pictorial decoration to upper board in black, blue, and grey. 16 pages of advertisements. Photographic frontispiece, 50 photographic plates, and 3 maps of which one is folding. A small dark mark to slightly faded spine, spine ends rubbed, slight tanning to free endpapers, occasional foxing along margins, one plate loose. A very good copy. First edition, first issue, only printing. My African Journey was the first book to derive purely from Churchill's journalism, as distinct from his work as a war correspondent. Before embarking he signed an extremely lucrative contract for the publication of a series of articles in The Strand, and for further publication in book form. What Churchill was offered is impressive testimony to his perceived drawing power, at £750 for five contributions he was receiving "more than Kipling, whom The Strand were paying £90 for his short stories; more than W. W. Jacobs, whose rate at the time was £110 for a story" (Pound, The Strand Magazine). With small light green bookseller's ticket to front pastedown.

        Midsummer-Night’s Dream, A

, 1908. 1908. An Almost Perfect Setting for Rackham's Devic Imagination"[RACKHAM, Arthur. Illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, William. A Midsummer Night's Dream. With Illustrations by Arthur Rackham. London / New York: William Heinemann / Doubleday, Page & Co., 1908. First U.K. trade edition. Quarto (9 3/4 x 7 1/8 in; 245 x 180 mm). [6], 134 pp. Forty tipped-in color plates, thirty black and white drawings. Publisher's gilt-stamped tan cloth. Neat gift inscription. Some feint damp-stains to upper board and pastedown endpapers, otherwise an internally fresh and fine copy. The Dream was, of course, an almost perfect setting for Rackham's devic imagination -- perhaps only bettered by the opportunity of The Tempest -- with the result that some of the fairies, elves and goblins he created for this play are among his finest colour images, and almost all the plates echo perfectly the mysterious interweaving of lightness and depth in this great work. Many of the formal plates are exquisite, whether they depict the principal events of the main theme of the story, such as the translated Bottom with his ass-head mocked by tree sprites, or the night-rule of Titania's haunted grove, those incidents within the subsidiary action, with details hardly dreamed of by Shakespeare, such as the gnomish knife-grinder in a motley group of fairies. Some of the floriated headings for the Dream are the finest of Rackham's line at the time, as for example the heading vignette for Act One, Scene One, which with typical Rackham irrelevance spreads its tendrils over the page, and into the text, ignoring the fact that the setting is supposed, according to Shakespeare, to be the Palace of Theseus, and throwing us immediately into a tangle-wood Rackhamerie, with mice, pixies and a sleeping maiden." (Fred Gettings. Arthur Rackham, pp. 117-123).Riall, p. 87. Latimore and Haskell, p. 32.

Minor surface rubbing to front board with loss of a few letters of illustrators name, otherwise a near fine copy. With an ALs from Dulac to Edward Cahen dated March 2, 1918 in reference to powdered gold pigment used for illustration background color. It is thought that gold pigment was in short supply during the WWI and still difficult to acquire. With a Dulac-to-Cahen autograph envelope dated February 12, 1918 tipped-in to rear. The note reads in full:"Dear Mr. Cahen:Excuse hasty note. I have been very busy & worried lately. Thence apparent negligence. Forgive me. No. I do not mind an initial expense. I said before that I would not expect you to be out of pocket, in addition to a ton of time on my account.A thousand thanks for your kindness.Yours,Edmund Dulac[?] is the gold [?] ?""A very attractive quarto, containing delightful drawings, in which that rare gift of colour which distinguishes this artist is reaffirmed... there is no monotony in Mr. Dulac's quaint conceptions" (The International Studio, January, 1909)."Mr. Dulac's pencil and brush have rarely been more successfully employed. Nothing more original in conception and effective colour printing has perhaps appeared for a long time" (The Daily Telegraph)."The rollicking figures that illustrate Dulac's alphabet book are, with those of Arabian Nights, among the most delightful of his book pictures. His work here shows his most individual style, his own way of doing things when unhampered by the limitations of a story or of a publisher... seldom did Dulac fail to tuck some whimsy into his book pictures, but the comic style which he launched... achieved sure triumph in the Lyrics..."         The Wind in the Willows

London:: Methuen,, 1908.. London:: Methuen,, 1908.. First edition.. Hardcover. Very Good. [vi], 302pp, plus the guarded frontispiece by Graham Robertson. An unrestored, firm, viable copy with some erosion to joints and spine ends. Front free endpaper bears the original bookseller's blind stamp to the corner, a neat 1908 gift inscription, and a later ownership name, which has offset slightly to the pastedown. Endpapers have minor foxing. A one-inch stain to the title page reduces rapidly over the next few pages. Many pages have a faint diagonal crease, appearing to have been slightly bent as a group at some time: a few have very minimal soiling. Contents otherwise very clean, with no splits or repairs. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Firm, in the original binding of blue cloth with the gilt image of Pan on the front and Toad in goggles on the spine: the front board is fairly bright, the lower board has a few ink spots, and the spine has puckering and small nicks to the foot and slight fraying to the top edge. There is some rubbing to edges and joints, the lower joint having a thumbnail snag and slight splitting. One of greatest children's stories, as it first appeared.

Nel Paese delle meraviglie di Lewis Carroll. Illustrato da Arturo Rackham

, [1908]. [1908]. Scarce First Edition in ItalianUnrecorded by Lattimore and HaskellAlice cominciava ad annoiarsi…[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. CARROLL, Lewis. Nel Paese delle meraviglie di Lewis Carroll. Fatto Italiano da Emma C. Cagli. Bergamo: Instituto Italiano D'Arti Grafiche Editore, n.d. [1908]. First edition in Italian of the Rackham edition of Alice in Wonderland, limited to 150 copies. Quarto (10 5/8 x 7 5/8 in' 270 x 195 mm). [10], 157, [1] pp. Thirteen tipped-in color plates, including frontispiece, on heavy stock with captioned tissue guards. Pictorial titlepage in black and white, and thirteen black and white drawings including three full-page. Decorated initials. Publisher's olive cloth with gilt vignette and lettering. A very attractive copy, in the original glassine, of an extremely rare Rackham edition."This translation appeared for the first time at the beginning of the twentieth century for the types of the Italian Institute of Graphic Arts of Bergamo and was taken in the series Fiabesca of Alternative Press - New Balance of Viterbo. The original title page reads: "IN WONDERLAND by Lewis Carroll illustrated by Arthur Rackham, Italian made by Emma C. Cagli "(emphasis added). This is the main feature of the version of Cagli: having given an Italian flavor to Alice. Cagli's translation is is a mixture of linguistic family and courtly, boyish and respectable bourgeois, provincial and catches us with a fidelity and happiness that seems to reflect the cultural tone of the emerging middle class of the early century, in a climate restless and in its way, and necessity, experimental."This edition seems very interesting - for in it, the reader does not claim to find the taste of the original, but to find the Italian air of the early twentoeth century.Riall p. 245.

        NEWPORT IN THE FIFTIES [manuscript].

[Newport, R.I. ]. 1908 - 43pp., written on recto only of 8 1/2 x 11-inch ruled paper. Held together in upper left corner with a brass fastener. First leaf very lightly soiled; several small holes, affecting two words of text near bottom. Verso of last leaf with some ink stains. Otherwise quite bright and clean. Very good. This anonymous manuscript was written in 1908, in response to a characterization of old Newport that had appeared in Henry James' AMERICAN SCENE in 1907. James wrote of the old inhabitants as a priggish and pretentious lot. The writer, Miss Katherine Prescott Wormely, unearths an old manuscript from the Fifties to disprove James' assertions. She first states her purpose, then quotes at length the offending passages from THE AMERICAN SCENE. Then, relying on the old manuscript, she names two dozen of the old families, describes their origins and accomplishments, and goes into detail about how they passed their time - including the patriotic Civil War contributions of this group, the formation of the "first (known) Woman's Club in America" and a dramatic club. After a description of the scenic highlights of Newport in the Fifties, she demonstrates the intellectual capability of her group by citing several examples of an intricate word game, and by quoting at length several poems, essays, and other literary efforts, including a particularly charming and revealing effort entitled "Unprotected Female of Newport." As of 1908 the author notes, "all (but one) have passed away." But this lone survivor has left us a poignant, charming, and highly detailed picture of the social scene in Newport in the 1850s. Probably a second or later draft, very neatly and legibly executed, but with portions of the text crossed out and corrected, notes appended and some corrections tipped in. A similar manuscript is in the Redwood Library in Newport.

, 1908. 1908. A Spectacular Copy of the Signed Limited Edition De LuxeWith A Significant Rackham Autograph LetterTogether with the Original Copper Printing Plate For One Of The IllustrationsIn a Magnificent Pictorial Onlaid Binding by The Chelsea Bindery[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, William. A Midsummer-Night's Dream. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: William Heinemann, 1908. Edition De Luxe, limited to 1000 number copies signed by the artist, this being copy no. 726. Quarto. [4], 134 pp on handmade paper. Forty mounted color plates with captioned tissue guards, thirty text drawings in black and white. Bound by The Chelsea Bindery ca. 2000, in full forest green morocco with gilt-ruled borders and trefoil corner-pieces framing a sunken panel of vividly varicolored morocco onlays with painted highlights reproducing the illustration, "I will sing, that they shall hear I am not afraid," opposite page 60. White moire silk endpapers. With a four page ALs from Rackham discussing this book, and one of the four copper plates used to color-print the illustration opposite page 88 "Never so weary, never so in woe". Mild offsetting to pages in contact with mounting paper. Housed in a magnificent, pictorially gilt drop-back clamshell box of full dark-green morocco with copper plate mounted within. An outstanding copy. The signed autograph letter, mounted on a preliminary blank, is addressed to Rackham collector John L. Hunt and reads in full: Stilegate, Limpsfield 19 Jan. '34Dear sir:Many thanks for your appreciative letter. I think The Midsummer-Night's Dream is certainly one of my best books. Nowadays it is disappointing that increasing costs of production make it impossible to publish anything like it on this score of quantity alone -Your copy is one of the first ordinary or unlimited edition. At the same time a numbered limited edition was published at two guineas. This has been done with almost all my books. The limited editions being signed tall paper copies, the text printed on hand-made paper, the coloured illustrations being the first prints taken, & bound (usually) in white vellum. Some of them are now hard to find as all were subscribed for on publication & the price has gone up in most cases, some to a considerable sum. At the present time I believe the prices have gone down since 3 or 4 years ago [the effect of the Great Depression] - as has happened with everything. But at the time the Midsummer Night's Dream was worth about 5 guineas. (Peter Pan - as much as 50 gs.)The limited editions are superior in that the colored plates are early & best impressions & that the hand-made paper of the text is sounder & more permanent.I feel bound to say that I think the actual difference in quality is not very great. Indeed, the text illustrations are less accurately printed on the handmade paper. But to me the fact of there being this limited edition is justified because (1) Without it, which insures a considerable certain return at a good profit to the publisher, as much in money and care, could not be spent on the quality of the production of the book at all: (2) Whereas I feel that the greatest compliment that can be shown to me is to wear my books out by appreciative use, the existence of the rather choice & costly limited editions more or less insures that some will be taken greater care of & will have a chance of survival (if future generations think they are worth preserving). The Americans have gradually been buying up hundreds of copies during the last few years, often sending them to me for original sketches to be inset or added.Sincerely, Arthur Rackham. At the time of the book's publication, Rackham took advantage of the new 4-color process for printing artwork. The included copper plate is one of four used to print the illustration, "I will sing, that they shall hear I am not afraid," opposite page 60. "[Rackham's] interpretation of A Midsummer-Night's Dream...[has] become definitive, and continue[s] to challenge later illustrators to find new approaches" (Hamilton, p. 9)."Rackham cast his spell over the play; his drawings superseded the work of all his predecessors from Gilbert to Abbey, and for fifty years have enriched the imagination; his conception of Puck and Bottom, Titania and Oberon, Helena and Hermia, his gnarled trees and droves of fairies, have represented the visual reality of the Dream for thousands of readers. Here he especially excelled at landscape, and in reconciling dream and reality, giving himself to the luxury of rich detail with rare generosity" (Hudson, p. 78).Latimore and Haskell p. 32. Riall, p. 87.
