Returning from Europe aboard the RMS Titanic, Futrelle, a first-cabin passenger, refused to board a lifeboat insisting his wife board instead, according to his wife, with the belief that her boarding would give him a better chance of surviving; he perished in the Atlantic.

(Wikipedia)

        è‰æ±æ¼«ç"» [Soju Manga].

      - Tokyo, Hidaka Yurindo 1908 (Meiji 41). 255x190mm publisher's printed wrapper (some wear, spine chipped); [6],136;[4],[8]pp; woodcut illustrations throughout, a few colour, most printed in sienna. Originally stapled, the staples have perished; a used but very decent copy in a modern chitsu. First edition of Usen's first book; a facsimile was published in the seventies. A lively collection of pictures, seemingly naive at times but as Hillier said of a later book - Sangusha (1912) - "The childlike naivete of the original sketches is . actually the acme of sophistication . the artist is as elliptical as the poet." (Hillier; The Art of the Japanese Book). Usen hadn't yet attained the fame that brought the quality of printing his later work has but he makes up for that here with humour and imagination. Usen studied western painting before starting his career as a newspaper and magazine illustrator and is among the best of the generation of artists born and educated with the Meiji, soaked in both the foreign and the nationalistic reaction to the foreign, and determined not to step backwards into regurgitating tradition nor become mimics of the west. Some of his late work seems refined to the point of kitsch to me but when sleek expensive art journals publish articles in English on the hitherto neglected anarchistic aims of Usen's early work we know that he has truly arrived. OCLC finds no copy of this outside the National Diet Library.

        The Holtbury Idyll

London: printed by the Women's Printing Society,, [1908]. An Heroic Comedy in thirteen Letters, six Telegrams and two Newspaper Paragraphs. Single 44pp quire stapled at the fold. Brown paper wrappers printed in dark brown. Staple a little rusted but holding fine, ends and corners slightly rubbed, a few small marks to wrappers and inner leaves, but still a very good copy indeed of this fragile and rare book. First and only edition of the rare first work by poet Frances Cornford (1886-1960, née Darwin - granddaughter of Charles Darwin), inscribed the dedication leaf verso, "To Stella from F. February 1908". The Holtbury Idyll is an elaborate skit on members of the Darwin family, provided in small numbers for family and friends. It is a genuinely rare work, not in Anderson's Treagara Press bibliography of Conford - we can also find no recorded instances of this work as having ever appeared at auction, and, at the point of cataloguing, no copies recorded at any library world-wide.

Réflexions sure la violence (Reflections on Violence).

Libraire de "Pages libres", Paris 1908 - 1 blank leaf + TP + Dedication page + [VII]-XLIII = Introduction + [1]-257 + [259] = Printer's information, Octavo. First Edition. On the Regenerative Role of Violence in a Modern Society.Anyone assessing the significance of Georges Sorel must long reflect on whether to classify him as an abstract thinker or as a social philosopher and reformer. He was, in fact, a mixture of both, but since he was a spectator in the workers' movement and not in any way a direct participant, he is most often placed with the thinkers. He is remembered for one book - Reflections on Violence - and for his later intellectual linkage with Communism and Fascism. Although his writing touched on many subjects, Sorel's work is most originally presents a fresh interpretation of Marxism, which was deeply anti-determinist, politically anti-elitist, anti-Jacobin, and built on the direct action of unions, the mobilizing role of myth-especially that of the general strike-and on the disruptive and regenerative role of violence. Whether Sorel is to be understood as a left or a right wing thinker is still a matter of dispute. The Italian Fascists praised him as a forefather, but the dictatorial government they established ran contrary to his beliefs. On the other hand, he was also an important touchstone for Italy's first Communists, who saw him as a theorist of the proletariat. Such widely divergent interpretations arise from the theory that a moral revival of the country must take place to re-establish itself; yet whether this revival must occur by means of the middle and upper classes or the proletariat is a point in question. His ideas, most notably the concept of a spontaneous general strike, have contributed significantly to anarcho-syndicalism. Publisher's original printed wraps. There a two light folds marks to the front cover and spine has been chipped a just a few small places. There is an inch-and-a-half closed tear to the lower rear cover. Although slightly cocked, this is a remarkably preserved copy of this important 100-year-old book. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]
