Autograph letter signed "Dr. Richard Strauss" to composer and conductor Otto Singer

1 page. On a postal card. Dated and postmarked Berlin April 11, [19]08. Densely written in Strauss's characteristic hand in black ink with the recipient's name and address in Munich to verso. In German (with translation). Strauss sends his recommendations for a reduced orchestral version of one of his works ?-?- presumably his opera, Elektra. "I received the scores today. The more I orchestrate, the more I realize that you won't get by with just 2 clarinets and bass clarinet in your transcription. That is why I'd like to ask you to modify the edition for reduced orchestra for e-flat clarinet or bass clarinet (one part), 2 clarinets in F, 1 basset horn. I will then have the e-flat or bass clarinet parts distributed such that, where both are playing, the two parts appear one above the other. When there is only one player, the conductor can choose; when there are two, the parts can simply be assigned. So for these e-flat/ bass clarinet parts you can simply add the passages for 3rd and 4th clarinet where there is room." Very slightly worn and foxed. . Strauss completed the full score for Elektra on September 22, 1908. The opera was first performed at the Dresden Hofoper on January 25, 1909, followed shortly thereafter by a performance in Berlin on February 15, 1909. As this letter indicates, Strauss seems to have conceived the versions for larger and smaller orchestra concurrently. Indeed, Adolph Fürstner published both, along with piano reductions by Otto Singer, in 1908. Otto Singer, Jr. (1863-1931) also produced solo piano transcriptions and/or vocal-piano reductions of works by other important composers, including Beethoven (complete symphonies), Brahms (complete symphonies), Liszt (at least 57 songs), and Wagner (12 operas). He was the son of Otto Singer (1833-1894), a prominent pianist, composer, and ardent disciple of Liszt and Wagner

        Marshall-Wells Hardware Co

Portland, OR.: Marshall-Wells Co.. No date. Ca. 1908.. Illustrated throughout in black and white and color, paging is not sequential but book is 5 1/2 inches thick, indexes, 12 x 11 inches, bound in a manufacturer-issued expandable binder (cloth covered boards with leather corners and spine) now missing front cover, part of spine missing, very worn and soiled, first page stained and missing lower right 1/4, first five pages with creasing and chipping to edges. Dampstaining affecting lower edge of some pages. Many of the paint samples have been removed, all but one of the sheets of sample wrapping paper have been torn out, occasional soiling, tears and paper loss to interior pages (see further description below), but in general the interior is still very tight and in good condition. Because it has been assembled from individual catalog sections the paging is not sequential eg. jumps from 2942 at end of cutlery department to 2999 at beginning of Sporting Goods, one side of one page is 2193 and the other side 2198. This is a compendium of Marshall-Wells catalogues gathered in an expandable binder for use in a store. The following sections are included, each with index: Saddlery hardware; Saddles, Collars, Harness; Fishing Tackle and Bicycle Goods; Sporting Goods Department; Cutlery Department; Mine, R.R. and Mill Supplies; Stove Department; House Furnishings; Paint Department; Farming and Logging Tools; Tools and Heavy Hardware; Builders' Hardware. It starts with page 129 of the Builders' Hardware section. This section is very similar to another individually bound copy of this section I have examined which is dated 1906; however this store copy seems to be an enlarged version with pages 279-1 to 279-11 inserted, whereas the single bound copy does not have these extra pages. Some of the multitude of different items illustrated and priced are trunks, horse blanket labels (5 pages in color of which 1/3 of one page is missing), all kinds of equipment for horses including boots, bridles and many many pages of harnesses, saddles (including ladies' side saddle and ladies' Australian astride saddles), bicycles, fishing equipment including baits etc (one of two color pages of wooden minnows is 2/3 torn out), 5 color pages of hammocks, row boats and canoes, croquet sets, 12 pages of baseball equipment, baby carriages, sleds (2 pages in color, one with long tear and paper loss at top left corner and in price area), skates, guns, revolvers and other shooting equipment including Remington and Winchester, office supplies, watches, harmonicas, toy banks, clocks (including cuckoo clocks and mission clocks and two color pages of Sessions mantle clocks), silverware, cut glass, cutlery, some very elaborate Art Nouveau design coal stoves, cooking stoves, iron bedsteads, spittoons, bird cages, wagons and buggies, logging tools, axes (18 color pages), tile roofing, ornamental steel ceilings, store cabinets and counters, electric light and gas fixtures, Santa Claus electric lighting, door and cabinet hardware. Price list dated 4-24-08 inserted. An invaluable view into the consumer and social life of early 20th century America. .

Archive of Material Relating to Juanita Miller and her Father Joaquin Miller

Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 0. Ephemera. The following is a beautiful archive of autograph letters with envelopes (mostly) from Juanita Miller to her father from Sept 1908 through March 21, 1911. Also included are several extra items including one autograph letter from Joaquin Miller to his daughter and several letters relating to either Juanita or Joaquin. "Cincinnatus Heine Miller (September 8, 1837 - February 17, 1913), better known by his pen name Joaquin Miller, was a colorful American poet and frontiersman. He is nicknamed the "Poet of the Sierras" after the Sierra Nevada, about which he wrote in his Songs of the Sierras (1871)." (From Wikipedia.) His daughter Juanita (Juanita Joaquina Miller -daughter of Joaquin Miller and wife Abbie Leland Miller was born in New York City in 1880. Miss Miller lived at Joaquin Miller's locally famous home, "The Heights," in Oakland, California, and was an active participant in the Oakland performing arts community until the 1960s.) She studied music in New York and was a sometime composer of music which produced to accompany her father's poems / lyrics. She was famous more for her father's well respected name than anything she herself did and was a flamboyant and rather eccentric character well known in the San Francisco Bay area from the 1930's on. The archives consist of:*Five holograph letters to Joaquin Miller from his daughter dated September 21st, 1908 - Dec 26th, 1908 in hand addressed envelopes.*Seven holograph letters to Joaquin Miller from his daughter dated February 1, 1909 - November 5th, 1909, in hand addressed envelopes.*Ten letters to Joaquin Miller from his daughter dated March 12, 1910 - December 14th, 1910, in hand addressed envelopes.*Five letters to Joaquin Miller from his daughter dated March 17th, 1911 - March 21st, 1911: all of these letters are addressed to Fabiola Hospital, Oakland, CA. (in hand addressed envelopes). (The Fabiola Hospital was built in 1887 at the intersection of New Broadway and Moss Avenue (now Broadway and West MacArthur Blvd.) on 2-1/2 acres of land donated by Anthony Chabot. This new hospital was the work of the women club members of the Fabiola Association who envisioned a comfortable environment for the underprivileged. The Oakland Kaiser Permanente complex literally stands on the same site as the Fabiola Hospital. 1Fabiola Hospital, Oakland, California 1Kate Kirkham learned of the need for a local hospital in Oakland after witnessing a terrible carriage accident in 1877. The victim had to be transported 10 miles to a hospital in San Leandro. $50 was collected from 18 of her women friends and the Fabiola Association was formed. The focus of the group was to provide medical assistance for all, regardless of financial circumstances. The name Fabiola comes from Saint Fabiola, a woman in 4th century Rome who started the first hospital for sick and needy travelers.*A five page holograph letter from Juanita Miller to her father dated May 10, 1909 in a hand addressed envelope which discusses her graduation (from music school) and plans for travel and goes on to mention that she would like to be independent: "it is really wicked for me to be dependent any longer & mother will not allow me to teach, she considers it unlady-like, she is also so fearful lest I sing (?) but do something without her knowledge." *An envelope (with the address of Harris and Ewing Photographers 1311 F. Street N.W. Washington D.C. which includes a holograph request by Margaret E. Harrington for Miss Miller to perform her father's poem "Columbus" for a group of pupils (undated). The envelope also includes a typed letter hand signed by Juanita Miller to her father discussing her mother's stifling of her career and life and how she would like to live with her father in Oakland but not sure she could flout her mother's wishes. Also included is a newspaper clipping regarding Juanita Miller (undated).*A holograph four page letter from Juanita Miller to an unknown recipient which mentions her father's illness and fighting spirit (there's much more to the letter, but the handwriting is difficult to read). This letter does not include an envelope and is undated. *A two page (half page letterhead from the Fabiola Hospital Association) dated March 8 (1911?) holograph letter from Joaquin Miller at Fabiola hospital - the handwriting is nearly illegible, but appears to be a note of love and care to his daughter . *A single page (half page letterhead from the Fabiola Hospital Association) , undated (assumed to be during March 1911), holograph letter from an attendant at Fabiola Hospital giving an update on Joaquin Miller's condition which was not improving and was partly due to nerves (according to the writer). *Four newspaper clippings regarding Juanita or Joaquin Miller (one from the Oakland Tribune dated Wed. Sept 25, 1968).*A flyer from AMORC (Rosicrucians) to Miss J J Miller.*Eight 8x10" photos (a couple of them have been cut down) of Juanita Miller posing for the camera (Includes duplicates of the same pose). One photo shows her in front of a small wooden cabin of some sort, the other could be a back garden (?)The letters vary in length and in content, but generally cover Juanita's daily life, her work with music and music study, her controlling mother and her desire to come and live with her father. There are instances throughout many of the letters where she discusses something to do with her father's writing, either receiving proof copies of something he wrote, discussion of something she read about or by him, etc. etc. Also the letters give an interesting look at the peripatetic lifestyle Juanita Miller had during this period of time - the letters are sent from a number of different places and she visits, or mentions many friends / acquaintances in her travels. .

        Maskee. A Shanghai Sketchbook

      - The wicked, decadent Shanghai of the thirties deliciously captured! Limitation No. 166 of unknown number. Inscribed and signed by Schiff. Closed, 27 by 19 cm. Stretched open, its 22 panels can reach 418 cm, or over 4 meters. Schiff (1908-1968) was an Austrian Jew who settled in Shanghai in 1930 and remained for 14 years, drawing inspiration from the colorful intermingling of Western and Chinese cultures and the vitality of its nightlife, its street life, its shadowy underworld and scrim of corruption. All of this serves as the backdrop for this humorous panorama, with its gobs, prostitutes and golddiggers, foreign expatriates, dissolute, sophisticated, desperate, and its smoky, boozy ambiences. Blue silk fabric of cover worn through in corners. Occasional soiling to the plates, but overall a bright and attractive copy. Leporellos. Silk over outer boards. Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, Illinois, including the Administration building, Drill Hall, Receiving Group/Dormitory & Mess, Detention Group/Receiving Building, Instruction, and Dormitory, all signed by Albert Ross, first Commandant of the Naval Training Station, August 17, 1906.Accompanied by four images of Admiral Ross, a 6.25??? x 9.5??? silver gelatin print in uniform, a 4.75??? x 6.75??? reproduction in uniform, an 8??? x 10??? reproduction in service dress whites, and a 5.5??? x 3.5??? photographic postcard [blank on verso] of Admiral Ross at his desk. Also includes a 5.5??? x 3.25??? photographic post card of President Taft and Admiral Ross at the dedication ceremony of the Training Station, and a few photographs unrelated to the training facility. The Great Lakes Naval Training Station is the largest training center in the Navy and its only boot camp, comprising 1,153 buildings on 1,628 acres. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt signed the act authorizing its construction, with Rear Admiral Albert Ross as the first Commander. According the mybaseguide website, ???It was a novel idea, at the time, to train enlisted Sailors before they got to the fleet. The Training Station at Newport, R.I., only got started in 1881. Before that, enlisted Sailors joined the Navy and went directly to a ship. All their training took place underway.â? Its location initially perplexed many who wondered why a Naval training facility would be located more than a thousand miles from any ocean. The website explains, â??Not long after the Spanish-American War, in 1902, U.S. Naval leaders noticed a remarkable fact: Many of their best Sailors came from the American Midwest. Why not train Sailors in the same part of the country?â?Rear Admiral Albert Ross [1846 â?? 1925] entered the Naval Academy during the Civil War. He had overseen several training commands and had been assigned to the Alliance, a training ship. Rear Admiral Ross was charged with supervising the work of Navy Civil Engineer George A. McKay and noted architect Jarvis Hunt. The initial facility opened July 1, 1911, and the first graduation class of 300 Sailors was attended by President Taft.

IX. 1909, 29. VIII. bis 17. IX. 1913, 8. bis 17. IX. 1915, 19. bis 30. IX. 1916, August 1922 ["nach 6jähriger Pause"], 28. VII. bis 19. VIII. 1923, 28. VIII. 1924, 7. bis 31. VIII. 1925, 28. VIII. bis 26. IX. 1927, 11. bis 30. VIII. 1928, 5. VIII. bis 4. IX. 1929, 10. VIII. bis 10. IX. 1930, 28. VII. bis 26. VIII. 1931, 22. VIII. bis 16. IX. 1934); General Theodor von Graevenitz (Juni 1926); der Romanist Ernst Robert Curtius (September [1921]); Johann Georg Herzog zu Sachsen und dessen zweite Gattin Maria Immacolata (24. VIII. 1917); Maria Josepha von Portugal (11. X. 1918), Louis Ferdinand Prinz von Preußen (22. IX. 1927) sowie Franz Joseph Prinz von Thurn und Taxis und dessen Gattin Elisabeth (13. X. 1928, allein auch 11. X. 1925).

Pastedowns and endleaves somewhat toned, the text very clean and bright, as is the fine Art Nouveau binding AN ODDITY IN THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE. Aletrino, Top Naeff, and others. To this work the Dutch Queen Emma and Prince Hendrik contributed writings on behalf of children who were fighting tuberculosis. * Copies of the greatly inferior and poorly made trade edition are common, but the Deluxe edition is very rare in public and private collections.         Hans Teichmueller. Biographical Sketch. Addresses and Letters to his family. [Prepared] by his loving wife and daughters

Austin: Von Boeckmann-Jones, 1908. FIRST EDITION. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. Small folio. Bound in original publisher's brown boards, upper cover decorated with a large vignette of acorns and oak leaves (signed "M.T."), recent brown morocco spine. A BEAUTIFUL COPY EARLY TEXAS JURISPRUDENCE AS PRACTICED BY ONE OF THE ORIGINAL GERMAN IMMIGRANTS. "Hans Teichmueller (1837-1901), judge and lawyer, was born in Braunschweig (Brunswick), Germany, on March 7, 1837, the third son of an army officer. At the age of fourteen, after several years of private training, he attended a boarding school where he had intended to study theology. He later gave up this idea to become a cabin boy on a steamer to New York. While in New York he stayed with a German lawyer who tried to persuade him to remain and study law. Not long afterwards Teichmueller returned to Germany and entered the gymnasium of Blankenburg in the Harz Mountains. The sudden death of his father a few years later made it impossible for Teichmueller to secure a university education, so he came to Texas to join his cousin, Arthur Meerscheidt, who lived on a farm in Fayette County. On June 16, 1858, Teichmueller married Augusta Kellner, whose father, a modern-language teacher, had taught him English when he first arrived in Fayette County. The Teichmuellers had five children. For a few months they farmed near Highhill in Fayette County, before moving to New Ulm, where Teichmueller studied law and taught school. His duties as a teacher exempted him from military service, but he served for about half a year as secretary of a militia at Brenham. Before the end of the Civil War he moved to La Grange, Fayette County, to begin his law practice. He passed his bar examination on May 16, 1866, and then entered the law firm of L. Lindsey and B. D. Shropshire. He served as county judge in 1869-1870 to fill the unexpired term of Reinhardt Hillebrandt. After several law partnerships he formed one with Meerscheidt and a man named Dunn, which terminated with Teichmueller's election to the judgeship of the Twenty-second Judicial District in 1884. Judge Teichmueller, a Democrat, read two papers before the Bar Association of Texas (later the State Bar of Texas) and wrote several articles on such subjects as trusts, economic freedom, expansion of the constitution, American jurisprudence, and bankruptcy; he intended to write a book on the homestead law. He died at La Grange on February 17, 1901" (SOURCE: Rudolph L. Biesele, Handbook of Texas).

Octavo. Original black wrappers, front panel lettered in gold, untrimmed. Title page and decorative initial letters printed in black and burgundy. Portion torn from head of spine and corner of front panel. First edition of Buber's third book, rare: not in OCLC and Copac locates just three copies (British Library, London Library, Oxford). Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Für Bernhard und Dora Kahn, 23.III.08, Martin Buber". An excellent association: Bernhard Kahn (1906-1963) was a Jewish lawyer born in Oscarsham, Sweden. Between 1904 and 1921 he was general secretary of the Hilfsverein der deutschen Juden. His archival collection is in the Leo Baeck Institute, Center for Jewish History, in New York, and was donated by his wife Dora. "[Buber's] neo-romanticism shaped his mystical and hagiographic anthologies of Hasidic lore such as The Legend of the Baal Shem [sic] (1908)" (Gordon & McCormick, Weimar Thought: a Contested Legacy, Princeton, 2013, p. 168).
