Midsummer-Night’s Dream, A

London: William Heinemann, 1908. - "An Almost Perfect Setting for Rackham's Devic Imagination"Edition de Luxe Signed by Arthur RackhamBound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, William. A Midsummer-Night’s Dream. With Illustrations by Arthur Rackham. London: William Heinemann, 1908. Edition de Luxe, limited to 1,000 numbered copies signed by the artist, this being copy No. 370. Large quarto (11 1/4 x 9 inches; 286 x 229 mm.). [6], 134, [1, blank], [1, printer's slug] pp. Forty color plates mounted on brown art paper, with descriptive tissue guards. Bound ca. 1960 by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in three-quarter dark blue morocco over blue cloth boards ruled in blind. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, top edge gilt, others uncut, cockerel end-papers. Early ink signature on recto of front blank, some mild toning to preliminary leaves. A near fine copy in an attractive binding."Within twelve months appeared Shakespeare's A Midsummer-Night's Dream, De la Motte Fouqué's Undine, and the Grimm brothers' Fairy Tales, all very different in quality and feeling, as demanded by the texts, but all of extremely high quality. The Dream was, of course, an almost perfect setting for Rackham's devic imagination -- perhaps only bettered by the opportunity of The Tempest -- with the result that some of the fairies, elves and goblins he created for this play are among his finest colour images, and almost all the plates echo perfectly the mysterious interweaving of lightness and depth in this great work. Many of the formal plates are exquisite, whether they depict the principal events of the main theme of the story, such as the translated Bottom with his ass-head mocked by tree sprites, or the night-rule of Titania's haunted grove, those incidents within the subsidiary action, with details hardly dreamed of by Shakespeare, such as the gnomish knife-grinder in a motley group of fairies. Some of the floriated headings for the Dream are the finest of Rackham's line at the time, as for example the heading vignette for Act One, Scene One, which with typical Rackham irrelevance spreads its tendrils over the page, and into the text, ignoring the fact that the setting is supposed, according to Shakespeare, to be the Palace of Theseus, and throwing us immediately into a tangle-wood Rackhamerie, with mice, pixies and a sleeping maiden." (Fred Gettings. Arthur Rackham, pp. 117-123).Latimore and Haskell, p. 32. Gettings, p. 177. Riall, p. 87.

This encouraged the twins to commence drawing animals and plants at a very early age, and resulted in a debut at the age of 13 at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, with nature studies in the Japanese style. The Detmolds subsequently learned techniques of watercolour etching and of colour printing with copper plates.

        Heinrich Kley: Zeppelins Schatten (Originalzeichnung)

1908 - Tusche, Gouache, Bleistift und Deckweiß. 36 x 32 cm. Rechts unten signiert. Veröffentlicht: Simplicissimus. Jahrgang 13 (1908), Heft33, Seite 546. Ausstellung: Heinrich Kley 1863-1945. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

History of the Sixth New York Cavalry (Second Ira Harris Guard) Second Brigade - First Division - Cavalry Corps Army of the Potomac 1861 - 1865 (with) A Cabinet Card Photograph of the Regiment's Major General, Thomas C. Devin

The Blanchard Press, Worcester, Mass. 1908 - 575 pages; black and white illustrations; including portrait of Brevet Major-General Thomas C. Devin, General Charles L. Fitzhugh, Lieutenant-Colonel Duncan McVicar; map of Alsop's Field, map of Gettysburg, illustrations of groups of portraits; maps of Five Forks, more; with a useful ready-reference page at front, acting as a short index; bound in the original goldenrod-yellow cloth, with the regimental arms illustrated on front board; some tips, edge-wear, soiling, to binding; contents clean and in very good condition; (with) a cabinet card half-length portrait photograph by Howard of Greenport, Long Island N.Y. of Thomas Casimir Devin (1822 - 1878) Union Army cavalry officer in command of the 6th NY for many of its engagements during the Civil War including Antietam and especially at the battle of Gettysburg: ". It was under Buford that Devin's star shone brightest. Devin had already acquired a well-earned reputation as a disciplinarian and field tactician as colonel of the Sixth New York, which was commended by observers as "the best-drilled Regiment in the service." As one of Buford's two brigade commanders, Devin now became known as "Buford's Hard Hitter" and Buford's "Old War Horse." He took his brigade into action under Buford in major cavalry engagements at Brandy Station (9 June 1863) and Upperville (21 June 1863). It was at Gettysburg (1-3 July 1863) that Devin performed his best-known service for Buford. On the first day, as Buford's cavalry division attempted to delay the advance of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia into Gettysburg so that the infantry of the Army of the Potomac would have the time to deploy and defend the town, Devin dismounted his Second Brigade and spread them out on the north side of Cashtown Road (on the northwest side of Gettysburg). Together with the dismounted troopers of the First Brigade, this thin screen of dismounted cavalry slowed the advance of superior numbers of Confederate infantry just long enough to permit the Army of the Potomac to occupy the high ground south and west of Gettysburg and thus ensure a Union victory over the next two days of the battle." (Allen C. Guelzo in the ANB); approx. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" size overall with the mount; studio imprint on back; photograph titled in the image; faded, mount a bit soiled; in good condition and a good accompaniment to the regimental history. Sehr guter Zustand. Vereinzelt stockfleckig. Unbeschnitten (aber aufgeschnitten). Handschriftlicher Besitzvermerk aus dem Jahre 1908: "R. Linder, cand. theol.".

1908 - London (and New York): Frederick Warne & Co., 1908. Original maroon cloth, beveled, with front cover pictorial onlay. First Edition, first printing. Tom Kitten disobeys his mother and goes hunting for adventure, but is captured by Samuel Whiskers and his fellow rats, who then steal dough and other ingredients to prepare a kitten pie. THE ROLY-POLY PUDDING was first published, in this large-format maroon cloth, in 1908 (two printings with that date on the title page, then a third in 1913); in 1918 it was published (undated) in paper-covered boards; and in 1926 the book was issued in the small format, and with the title changed to THE TALE OF SAMUEL WHISKERS.~This copy is from the first printing, with "[All rights reserved]" below the date 1908 on the title page. Condition is very good-plus, perhaps near-fine: the cloth is slightly faded (though as Quinby points out, the cloth is "mixed light and dark threads"), and there is just a touch of wear at the corners; inside, two textual leaves have short closed edge-tears. The front endpaper bears a Christmas 1908 gift inscription. Quinby No. 15; Linder p. 427. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Macmillan and Co., 1908.. First Detmold colour illustrated Edition. Octavo (22 x 4.5 cm); pp.xii, 314, [2] advertisements. With 16 full-page colour plates. Elegantly hand-bound in half red morocco over origina gilt-pictorial cloth sides, with raised bands and gilt titles to spine, top edge gilt. Charles Maurice Detmold and Edward Julius Detmold were English graphic artists, twins, born on 21 November 1883. Due to the illness of their father, they grew up in the care of their uncle, Dr E B Shuldham, who had acquired a notable collection of Japanese woodprints of plants and animals.

4 FIRST EDITIONS IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF LIPPMANN'S MILESTONE PAPERS DESCRIBING HIS INVENTION OF COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY. For his "method of reproducing colours photographically based on the phenomenon of interference", Lippmann was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1908 (Nobel Prize Committee). Gabriel Jonas Lippmann was a French scientist and physicist with a particular interest in the theory of light, and specifically, color theory. In the first paper offered here (February 2, 1891) Lippmann announced to the Academy of Sciences in Paris that he had succeeded in recording a true-color spectrum which was permanent. To do so, he employs the 'interference principle' - a method based on silver chloride's optical reaction to light waves). A little more than one year later, on April 25, 1892 (offered here in the second paper), Lippmann gave a second presentation at the Academy of Sciences. This time he displayed four color photographs of different objects" - specifically, he had succeeded in producing colour images of a stained glass window, a group of flags, a bowl of oranges topped by a red poppy and a multicolored parrot. (Hannavy, Ency of 19th c. Photography, 862). In the third paper offered here (October 24, 1892), Lippmann presented the first colored photographs of the spectrum on albumen and bichromated gelatin. Here Lippmann took "albumenized and gelatinized plates soaked in bichromate of potash may be employed for photographing in colors" (Nature 47, 1201, 1892, 23). "They are used like silver-salt plates, being placed so that the mercury is in contact with the film. The colors will appear immediately after immersion in water, which develops and also fixes the image. It disappears on drying, but reappears as soon as the plate is soaked. The colors are very brilliant and visible at all angles. Those of gelatin plates are brought out by simple breathing. The theory is analogous to that of silver plates, the maxima and minima of interference producing hygroscopic and non-hygroscopic layers with varying refractive indices" (ibid). In the forth paper offered here (January 15, 1894), Lippmann put fourth his theory of photography simple colors and composed by the interferometric method". 1894 is "the first proper theory of the recording of monochromatic and polychromatic spectra. He applied Fourier mathematics to optics, which was a new approach at that time. To record a more complex wave front, such as a landscape scene in natural colors, Lippmann introduced Fourier mathematics to show how such a recording could be theoretically described" (Bjelkhagen, Ultra-Realistic Imaging, 43). CONDITION & DETAILS: Paris: Gauthier-Villars. 4 complete issues, all in original paper wraps. 4to (11.25 x 9 inches; 281 x 225mm). Comptes Rendus in paper wraps are rarely present as the wrap paper (not interior paper) is particularly fragile; it is quite unusual for all issues to have their wraps. The wraps are bound in string with the spines going but the stitching holding; otherwise clean. The April 25, 1892 issue shows signs of old staining (happily absent any mustiness) on the wrappers plus a short closed tear at the foot of the front wrap. The staining is contained to the wrap and did not advance to the interior text. The first, third and fourth issues have slight creasing but are in very good condition.

        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, 1908. With Sixty-One Illustrations from Photographs by the Author and Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Wilson, and Three Maps. Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt lettered spine, titles and pictorial decoration to front board in black, blue, and grey. Publisher's 16 catalogue at end. Photographic frontispiece, 48 photographic plates, and 3 maps (one folding). Spine lightly sunned, slightabrasion to fore edge of front cover, a touch of foxing to lower margins, a few leaves creased at fore margin but nevertheless a very good copy. First edition, first impression. My African Journey was the first book to derive purely from Churchill's journalism, as distinct from his work as a war correspondent. Before embarking he signed an extremely lucrative contract for the publication of a series of articles in The Strand, and for further publication in book form. What Churchill was offered is impressive testimony to his perceived drawing power, at £750 for five contributions he was receiving "more than Kipling, whom The Strand were paying £90 for his short stories; more than W. W. Jacobs, whose rate at the time was £110 for a story" (Pound, The Strand Magazine, 1891-1950). "The result bubbles with Churchill's irrepressible interest in everything new, whether it was the thrill of hunting rhino, the dangers of sleeping sickness, or the engagingly extempore justice of the District Officers" (Woods, Artillery of Words: The Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, 1992, p. 81).

        Beautiful Thoughts from Bulwer-Lytton

James Pott & Co., New York 1908 - From about 1890 into the 1920s, New York Publisher James Pott (& Co.) issued from their premises on East Twenty-Third Street a number of volumes of "Beautiful Thoughts" -- 366 sayings excerpted from the works of a given author of note and then arranged to provide a "thought" for each day of the year. (Those who contend there are 365 "thoughts" in their volume should check for a Feb. 29 entry.) These little 16mos were available in "colored cloths, (with) photogravure of author inlaid on cover," for 75 cents, or in leather, "gilt top," for $1.00. The Tennyson, Drummond, Gladstone, Shakespeare, Browning and Carlyle volumes are fairly common. The Longfellow and George MacDonald volumes command moderately higher prices, while the Ralph Waldo Emerson is generally considered the prize of those still readily available, often commanding several hundred dollars per copy -- more if in leather. Whether Mr. Pott ever got around to producing his promised volumes based on Hawthorne, Ruskin, and the Holy Bible, we don't know. But there should be volumes for Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Kingsley and John Greenleaf Whittier (the latter combined with "Holmes" -- we presume Oliver Wendell), rarely seen. And then there's the Bulwer-Lytton, 1900, now known only in reprints digitized from the lone copy at the Library of Congress. A cursory search turns up no copies offered at auction for more than 60 years. (Of course, the popularity of the author of "Paul Clifford," "Godolphin," "The Last Days of Pompeii," and "The Coming Race," may not have held as steady as Mr. Emerson's, despite the persistence of the annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest.) Our Bulwer-Lytton is a 1908 printing of the year 1900 compilation, in leather, gold gilding to top edge at about 70 percent, bottom of front hinge torn but the top half still holding, with a 1924 graduation gift inscription to the FFE. It's tight enough to close its own (moderately flexible) boards, but there's a tidemark to middle of front page edges indicating bottom half of said front page edges were once damp. Dampness did not penetrate more than 1/4-inch, affecting no text, but we still reduce our grade of this rare volume to "good." 273 pp. followed by a publisher's ad for the 16 titles in the series as of 1908, those being: Gladstone, Drummond, MacDonald, Kingsley, Bulwer-Lytton, R&E Browning, Carlyle, Emerson, Longfellow, Whittier combined with Holmes, Stevenson, Tennyson, Shakespeare, selections from the Holy Bible, Hawthorne, and Ruskin. Exeunt omnes. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Wind In The Willows (1908 first printing)

Methuen and Co, 1908. Hardcover. Used; Acceptable. Graham Robertson. Hardcover; English language; No jacket; Illustrator: Graham Robertson; 12mo - over 6.75" - 7.75" tall; a worn but readable copy of scarce title; both cover boards are discoloured at bottom from moisture staining, moreso on front but this is nowhere near the gilt illustration; spine unaffected by staining but cloth is worn at top and bottom edges, though the gilding of the text and illustration of Toad are strong; there are some small splits to the cloth joining the spine to covers, mostly on the rear board side, with a 25 mm split at the bottom; internal and external hinges are sound; all pages are present but tissue paper protecting the Graham Robertson frontis is missing; front and rear endpapers have foxing and a few early pages have light foxing but the vast majority of pages are very clean, with only the occasional page having a small mark; no owner name inside (just 5/- written in pen at top-left corner of front paste-down) but front paste-down and the blank page opposite the half title page have considerable scribbling with a yellow pencil (and one line of yellow on flyleaf) - it might be possible to erase this but we have not attempted it; the yellow pencilling only affects these blank pages; despite the flaws, this is a sound copy with mostly very clean pages of the first printing of one of the most iconic books of the C20th.         [Original Autograph Letter, Signed ("Father"), to His Daughter, Jean Clemens]

New York, 1908. Four pages, in ink, on folded quarto sheet of simple letterhead (21 Fifth Avenue), ca. 275 words, with envelope addressed in his hand, with signed ("S. L. Clemens") return address. A warm and loving letter from Clemens to his youngest daughter, Jean (1880 - 1909), then at Eastern Point in Gloucester, Mass, during one of the extended separations from her family due to her need for special care for her epilepsy: "Your beautiful letter has come, Jean dear, & I draw a deep breath of relief - you like the place & my anxieties have vanished away! I had a growing fear - founded on nothing - that you would feel the other way about it. I am unspeakably glad that it pleases you, & now I hope & believe you will have a happy summer. By your description, it is a place that would delight the heart of any one that has the seeing eye for the graciousness of the woods & fields & rocks & their wild inhabitants & for the majestic ocean. You can live out of doors there. You were virtually in prison at Greenwich, & would still have been in prison if you had occupied the whole forlorn & uninspiring town ...." He continues at length about his own activities, assuring her not to "... trouble about me! I am a happy & vigorous loafer." He recounts attendance at speeches and political banquets, games of billiards and the like, then turns to family matters, detailing efforts by Clara and the house staff to keep distresses from him "unless it is something I could remedy ... They know I desire this; for I am taking my holiday, now after 60 years of work & struggle & worry & vexation ... But whenever there is anything that depends upon me & my help, I want to know all about it." He closes: "With ever & ever & ever so much love, dear child, Father."
