L'Heure Espagnole Comédie Musicale en Un Acte, Poème de Franc-Nohain... Partition pour Chant et Piano Transcrite par l'Auteur. [Piano-vocal score]

Paris: A. Durand & Fils [PN D. & F. 7073], 1908. First Edition. Orenstein: Ravel Man and Musician, p. 228. L'Heure Espagnole was first performed in Paris at the Opéra Comique on May 19, 1911 to a libretto closely based on the play by Franc-Nohain. Madame Jean Cruppi (the dedicatee) convinced the director of the Opéra-Comique, Albert Carré, to stage the work in spite of its risqué story line. "In a letter of 17 May 1911, two days before the première, Ravel wrote: ?What I've tried to do is fairly ambitious: to breathe new life into the Italian opera buffa: following only the principle ... the French language, like any other, has its own accents and inflections of pitch.' At the same time he referred to Musorgsky's Zhenit'ba (?The Marriage') as the work's only real ancestor. It also forms part of a larger group of Spanish works that spanned Ravel's whole career, and the necessary Spanish colouring provided him with a reason for a virtuoso use of the modern orchestra, which he felt was ?perfectly designed for underlining and exaggerating comic effects'." Roger Nichols in Grove Music Online. Indeed, composer-writer Reynaldo Hahn somewhat critically referred to Ravel's technique as "a sort of transcendent jujitsu." Noted music critic Georges Jean-Aubry (1882-1949) "belonged to a circle of avant-garde musicians and littérateurs and was a frequent contributor to periodicals. Encouraged by his 20-year friendship with Debussy, he wrote enthusiastically in support of contemporary French composers, noting similarities between their music and that of the 18th century (Couperin, Rameau). He wrote perceptively in praise of Spanish composers (Falla, Granados, Albéniz), but rejected German Romanticism as expressed in the works of Wagner and Strauss." Grove Music Online.. Small folio. Half mid-tan calf with marbled boards, original publisher's wrappers printed in black and red bound in. 1f. (blank), 1f. (title printed in red and black), 1f. (printed dedication "À Madame Jean Cruppi Hommage de respectueuse amitié Maurice Ravel"), 1f. (cast list), [i] (index), [ii] (performance notes), 114 pp. With an autograph inscription signed by Ravel to dedication leaf: "et à G - Jean - Aubry (en moins respectueuse amitié) Maurice Ravel." Wrappers browned and very slightly defective. Slightly worn and browned; small tear to head of dedication repaired; small publisher's monogramatic handstamp to lower edge of verso of last page; contemporary newspaper clippings to recto of blank leaf preceding title, with synopsis and review of the work by Gabriel Fauré.

An Illustrated Practice of Osteopathy - 1908 von Christian Hartmann Verlag (Herausgeber), Still National Osteopathie Museum (Autor), Etienne Cloet (Vorwort), Jason Haxton (Vorwort), James McGovern (Vorwort), Jane Stark (Vorwort) Sprache: Deutsch, Englisch, Franz?sisch, Spanisch

Jolandos, 1908.

Autograph letter to an unidentified male recipient, signed in full

As promised, Strauss completed the score for Elektra on September 22, 1908. The opera premièred at the Dresden Hofoper on January 25, 1909, followed shortly thereafter by a performance in Berlin on February 15. Although publically announced in newspapers such as the New York Times, the Monte Carlo première appears not to have eventuated. The French language première of the opera was actually given by the Manhattan Opera Company on February 1, 1910; Strauss accorded the first American performance of Elektra to this fledgling company of Oscar Hammerstein's as something of an act of revenge upon the Metropolitan Opera for banning his previous opera, Salome. Raoul Gunsbourgh (1860-1955) was the longest-serving director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, his career there spanning almost six decades.. 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Garmisch, July, 20, [19]08. In black ink. On lined paper. In French (with translation). An important letter in which Strauss discusses the forthcoming Dresden, Berlin, and Monte Carlo premières of his opera, Elektra. "... Tell [Raoul Gunsbourgh] that I am sure to finish the score for Elektra by September, that everything will be printed by the beginning of December and that the French première at Monte Carlo can take place towards the end of February or the beginning of March... I myself will be able to conduct Elektra at Monte Carlo if all circumstances permit. I want to personally assist in the première of Elektra at Dresden (at the end of January)... " Very slightly soiled; creased at folds.

Accompanied by some ethnographical notes, annotations, calculations and explanations, Michel himself left 15 manuscript sheets on this subject, probably composed (between 1945-1948) to prepare for an article/essay in a french magazine. After events of second world war actually matched well with the Zoukouala predictions (really mentioning 1939 + 1945 in particular), Michels attention was brought back to these prophecies, he copied decades ago. The script features further cataclysmic predictions up to the 21st century, so Michel possibly then decided, matter may be worth publishing. As it apparently remained unpublished, this unique manuscript seems to be the only surviving source on this mysteries and prophecies nowadays. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

History of the Sixth New York Cavalry (Second Ira Harris Guard) Second Brigade - First Division - Cavalry Corps Army of the Potomac 1861 - 1865 (with) A Cabinet Card Photograph of the Regiment's Major General, Thomas C. Devin

Worcester, Mass.: The Blanchard Press, 1908. 575 pages; black and white illustrations; including portrait of Brevet Major-General Thomas C. Devin, General Charles L. Fitzhugh, Lieutenant-Colonel Duncan McVicar; map of Alsop's Field, map of Gettysburg, illustrations of groups of portraits; maps of Five Forks, more; with a useful ready-reference page at front, acting as a short index; bound in the original goldenrod-yellow cloth, with the regimental arms illustrated on front board; some tips, edge-wear, soiling, to binding; contents clean and in very good condition; (with) a cabinet card half-length portrait photograph by Howard of Greenport, Long Island N.Y. of Thomas Casimir Devin (1822 - 1878) Union Army cavalry officer in command of the 6th NY for many of its engagements during the Civil War including Antietam and especially at the battle of Gettysburg: "... It was under Buford that Devin's star shone brightest. Devin had already acquired a well-earned reputation as a disciplinarian and field tactician as colonel of the Sixth New York, which was commended by observers as "the best-drilled Regiment in the service." As one of Buford's two brigade commanders, Devin now became known as "Buford's Hard Hitter" and Buford's "Old War Horse." He took his brigade into action under Buford in major cavalry engagements at Brandy Station (9 June 1863) and Upperville (21 June 1863). It was at Gettysburg (1-3 July 1863) that Devin performed his best-known service for Buford. On the first day, as Buford's cavalry division attempted to delay the advance of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia into Gettysburg so that the infantry of the Army of the Potomac would have the time to deploy and defend the town, Devin dismounted his Second Brigade and spread them out on the north side of Cashtown Road (on the northwest side of Gettysburg). Together with the dismounted troopers of the First Brigade, this thin screen of dismounted cavalry slowed the advance of superior numbers of Confederate infantry just long enough to permit the Army of the Potomac to occupy the high ground south and west of Gettysburg and thus ensure a Union victory over the next two days of the battle...." (Allen C. Guelzo in the ANB); approx. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" size overall with the mount; studio imprint on back; photograph titled in the image; faded, mount a bit soiled; in good condition and a good accompaniment to the regimental history.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Albert Weisgerber: Neuestes von Serenissimus (Originalzeichnung)

1908 - Tusche (Pinsel), Bleistift und Deckweiß auf Papier. 37,0 x 31,0 cm. Rechts unten signiert und datiert. Veröffentlicht: Jugend. Jahrgang 13 (1908), Heft 21, Seite 504. Text: „Se. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Handbook of the Medical Services of Foreign Armies. Parts I?VI.

London: HMSO,, 1908-11. 6 volumes small octavo (164 × 103 mm). All perfect bound in the original buff textured paper wraps laid down on light archival card. All wraps restored as noted, no loss of text from the upper wraps, part I lacks entire lower wrap, ink-stamps of the Inspector of Medical Services to the upper wraps, light toning, contents clean and sound, a very good set. First editions of these uncommon official publications. Print-runs were 2,000 for each part, but there are just a scatter of complete sets institutionally (10 recorded on OCLC). The individual volumes deal with France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium. They represent a revision of the Handbook of the Medical Organisations, chiefly for War, of Foreign Armies, which was compiled by Lt.-Col. Frank Howard in 1902, which gave brief coverage to around 20 nations. "In consequence of the Geneva Convention ? 1906, a knowledge of these services has become of greater importance than previously to officers of the army, more especially to officers of the Royal Army Medical corps, and to all who may be associated with that corps in time of war" (introduction). Lieut.-Col. Macpherson, the compiler of this new series, was later to become colonel commandant of the Royal Army Medical Corps, having been deputy director-general medical services during World War I. During the war he was mentioned in despatches nine times, and received honours from France, Italy and the United States, picking up the sobriquet "Tiger Mac" on account of his ferocious energy and attention to detail. He was the author of the official medical history of the war. These copies from the library of the Royal Army Medical College with their ink-stamps to the wraps.

        Midsummer-Night?s Dream, A

1908. An Almost Perfect Setting for Rackham's Devic Imagination"Edition de Luxe Signed by Arthur RackhamBound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, William. A Midsummer-Night?s Dream. With Illustrations by Arthur Rackham. London: William Heinemann, 1908. Edition de Luxe, limited to 1,000 numbered copies signed by the artist, this being copy No. 370. Large quarto (11 1/4 x 9 inches; 286 x 229 mm.). [6], 134, [1, blank], [1, printer's slug] pp. Forty color plates mounted on brown art paper, with descriptive tissue guards. Bound ca. 1960 by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in three-quarter dark blue morocco over blue cloth boards ruled in blind. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, top edge gilt, others uncut, cockerel end-papers. Early ink signature on recto of front blank, some mild toning to preliminary leaves. A near fine copy in an attractive binding."Within twelve months appeared Shakespeare's A Midsummer-Night's Dream, De la Motte Fouqué's Undine, and the Grimm brothers' Fairy Tales, all very different in quality and feeling, as demanded by the texts, but all of extremely high quality. The Dream was, of course, an almost perfect setting for Rackham's devic imagination -- perhaps only bettered by the opportunity of The Tempest -- with the result that some of the fairies, elves and goblins he created for this play are among his finest colour images, and almost all the plates echo perfectly the mysterious interweaving of lightness and depth in this great work. Many of the formal plates are exquisite, whether they depict the principal events of the main theme of the story, such as the translated Bottom with his ass-head mocked by tree sprites, or the night-rule of Titania's haunted grove, those incidents within the subsidiary action, with details hardly dreamed of by Shakespeare, such as the gnomish knife-grinder in a motley group of fairies. Some of the floriated headings for the Dream are the finest of Rackham's line at the time, as for example the heading vignette for Act One, Scene One, which with typical Rackham irrelevance spreads its tendrils over the page, and into the text, ignoring the fact that the setting is supposed, according to Shakespeare, to be the Palace of Theseus, and throwing us immediately into a tangle-wood Rackhamerie, with mice, pixies and a sleeping maiden." (Fred Gettings. Arthur Rackham, pp. 117-123).Latimore and Haskell, p. 32. Gettings, p. 177. Riall, p. 87.
