REBEL PRIVATE: FRONT AND REAR EXPERIENCES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM THE EARLY FIFTIES AND THROUGH THE CIVIL WAR.

Beaumont: Press of The Greer Print, 1908., 1908. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Decorated cloth, 193 pp., portrait. Fletcher's rememberences has been hailed by historians as a classic and indispensable work of a common foot soldier who happened to have fought in many of the war's most dramatic engagements. Fletcher returned to East Texas following the Civil War, where he owned a successful lumber business until his death in the early 1900s. Howes F194 says, "Best personal narrative by a Confederate private. An excellent Civil War narrative about a man who enlisted in the 5th Texas Cavalry in 1861 and later transferred to the 8th Texas Cavalry in 1864. Most of the [original] edition was destroyed by fire." Some rubbing and soiling to the fore-edges of the covers and some internal soil to a few pages, a small old water stain to the margin along the bottom page edges, and a small amount of insect nibbling to the lower margin edges of pages 105 through 117, else a very good, tight copy of a rare book. Housed in a cloth slipcase with leather label on spine and titles stamped in gold gilt.

Lettera autografa firmata indirizzata a ''Caro Goffredo''

Datata 11 Xbre, s.d. (ma 1908 c.a). - 3 pagine in-8, chiaramente vergate e firmate ''Edmondo''. Arthur Machen autograph letter

Arthur Machen, Welsh writer of 'weird fiction' autograph letter 6 page autograph letter from Machen to Fr Henry George Edward Rope [1880 - 1978] Catholic priest and scholar, dated Aug 5th 1908 from 6 Cosway Street, Marylebone. My Dear Sir, very many thanks for your kind letter & for the "Franciscan Annals", your work in which I read with great interest & sympathy. Certainly poor Ruskin was a catholic egare [i.e. 'lost'] an anima naturaliter Christiana ['a natural Christian soul']. I trust your [wish?] as to the German Church may be accomplished. It is curious by the way, that the Lutheran rite is musically very interesting. The Prayer of Consecration is sung throughout to a "Preface Tone" & another prayer (I forget which) to a chant of peculiar beauty with strong resemblances to the Welsh Hwyl. I am much annoyed by one article in the "Annals" - that about Father Matthew. I wish the anecdote about Fr Matthew's aunt's stockings could have ended up - "whereupon his uncle kicked him out of the house". A male prude is a horrid thing; that is unfitting for the young to correct their elders, it is unfitting for any man to destroy another's goods. Your sympathy is very cheering to me, who do my best in a cause which I think is lost. Even amongst the faithful there is the hopeless corruption of this age. In every church we are fond of singing maudlin hymns to maudlin tunes; in your church you are fond of maudlin statues posed on maudlin altars. In either case the defence is the same: "it edifies the people". I tell my vicar that it would be much better if the people were not edified - in that fashion - but he will not believe me. Bad religion manifests in bad art as good religion built Lincoln Cathedral & sang the Victimae Paschali [medieval hymn during the liturgy of the Eucharist. Machen was a great aficionado of medieval music] The Lord of the Feast "compelled them to come in" but there is no record of his having furnished his house to please their hedge-&-ditch aesthetic standard. Again with many thanks, yours Arthur Machen. Two shhets of blue writing paper, the second with integral blank. Envelope folds else VG condition. Included are two letter from machen's correspondent, Fr Henry Rope. Both are to Aidan Reynolds, Machen's biographer before the publication of the biography. The letters are dated Nov. 1959. The first informing Reynolds that he corresponded with machen several times but this is the only letter he could find others he thinks he has sent to Mrs Kyrle Fletcher. The second letter actually pertains to Machen's more directly. Mentioning the anecdote relating to "Fr Matthews" which he can barely recall: Altogether ludicrous but I think too trivial to be worth recording......I agree that Machen went too far about art. Had he said that good art is one sign of good religion that could be contended (but also could be contended against, I fear)at any rate that could be a very tenable opinion. But good religion built or allowed to be built appallingly bad buildings (like St Nicholas Pro-Cathedral Liverpool) and hundreds of deplorable buildings in England, in ireland, france and above all in the USA (I am not condemning modern Gothic, much of which I warmly admire but only bad, costly travesties of Gothic such as we see in Cork, for example..... Some creasing, punch holes to the Rope letters. Machen's letters are rare and even rarer those which offer an insight into the man.

First of all, I have to remark that I have to demand the Munich rehearsal right after the concert in Wiesbaden, because I will not make the trip twice under any circumstances.  Further, I am just thinking now if it wouldn't be better to play symphony by Beethoven or Schumann, instead of one of mine!  Please give me your opinion on this.  Will there be a soloist in this concert as well? The date is fine with me, but I would have preferred a bit later. Best regards, Mahler // From today on, back in Vienna"<br style="">The impresario Emil Gutmann, active in Munich and later in Berlin, organized the premiere in 1910 of Mahler's Eighth Symphony and was also responsible for coining its nickname, 'Symphony of a Thousand'.  His concert agency was central to Munich's musical life of that era. The present letter evidently refers to Mahler's performances in Wiesbaden on 8 May, 1908 (at which he conducted his own First Symphony and works by Mendelssohn and Beethoven) and to his performance, under Gutmann's supervision, in Munich on 27 October, 1908 at which Mahler conducted his Symphony No. 7 and works by Wagner and Beethoven. <br style="">

(Theory of the open pipe according to Helmholtz). Probably Vienna, no date.

1908. 4to. 13 numbered pp. on folded bifolia, 3 final blank pp. Black ink on paper; one diagram in the text. Several autogr. revisions and notes in pencil and blue crayon. Apparently penned in connection with Hasenöhrl's hydromechanics lecture (Mechanics II), which Hasenöhrl taught in the summer semesters of 1908, 1911, and 1914; possibly written for or during the concomitant seminar course. Two crayon markings ("1 V" and "2 V") typical for Hasenöhrl's documents show the progress made at each session. - In his 1933 Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Erwin Schrödinger looked back on the gift of his teacher Hasenöhrl to discuss a subject matter in the lecture hall both extensively and closely: "The lecture cycle, which spanned eight semesters of five periods per week, treated the advanced theories of mechanics as well as the eigenvalue problems of continuum physics with the degree of detail that I would later need dearly - I have never been able to study from books with any ease [... He died in the War], and a feeling tells me that, but for that, it would be he who would be receiving this honor in my place today." In his 1904 treatise "On the Theory of Radiation in Moving Bodies", Hasenöhrl had applied the concept of "electromagnetic mass" to a cavity filled with radiation, arguing that any kind of thermal radiation provides such a body with an apparent increase of mass. This achievement, which makes the connection of energy and mass and - in its most radically compressed form "m = E/c²" - seems to anticipate Einstein's special theory of relativity, won Hasenöhrl the 1905 Haitinger Prize (at Boltzmann's suggestion) and was the basis for his appointment to the Vienna Chair of Physics the following year. In 1905, Einstein generalised Hasenöhrl's equation (which the latter had applied only to cavity radiation) and managed to embed it within an encompassing theory, thus arriving at the iconic "E=mc²" equation (for Hasenöhrl's role in the development of the equation cf. Stephen Boughn's recent article, "Fritz Hasenöhrl and E=mc²", in: The European Physical Journal H 38/1 [Jan. 2013], p. 1-18). Incidentally, Hasenöhrl taught Einstein's theory of relativity in his lectures - a highly uncommon course topic for the time. In 1911, Hasenöhrl participated in the historic first "Conseil Solvay", the invitation-only Brussels conference that united the world's elite of experimental and theoretical physicists to discuss the fundamental problems of their field. Themed "La théorie du rayonnement et les quanta", that first conference tackled the various approaches of classical physics and the emerging quantum theory; among the other participants were Einstein, Marie Curie, Ernest Rutherford, H. A. Lorentz, Wilhelm Wien, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, and Henri Poincaré. Hasenöhrl also participated in the second Solvay Conference in 1913. - Edges slightly frayed and dusty, otherwise perfect. Of the utmost rarity: Hasenöhrl manuscripts are considered virtually unobtainable; auction records since 1975 list not a single leaf of writing in his hand (in contrast with more than 1000 records for Albert Einstein, more than 100 of which are manuscripts). The Göttingen State Library holds a 17-page transcript of Hasenöhrl's lecture on spherical functions (Cod. Ms. G. Herglotz E 15) in the hand of the student Gustav Herglotz (1881-1953), later professor of Mathematics at Leipzig and Göttingen. The Austrian Central Library of Physics keeps an archive of Hasenöhrl material: a single-box corpus containing mainly photographs, offprints, and photocopies of personal documents, but no manuscripts at all (with the exception of a single page of equations on the reverse of a letter from a bookseller). Several letters by Hasenöhrl are to be found in the personal archives of scholars (e. g., to Prof. Stefan Meyer, in the Archives of the Institute for Radium Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences).
