The Adventures of Borbee and the Wisp, The Story Of A Sophisticated Little Girl And An Unsophisticated Little Boy.

1908 - 4to. Original red cloth-backed white pictorial boards, patterned endpapers; pp. [67]; illustrated with a pictorial title-page and a total of 31 exquisite coloured plates with line drawings and decorations in brown; an exceptionally fresh copy of a very scarce book; externally bright and clean with only a very faint trace of dusting and very mild speckling; internally fine throughout. First edition. Florence Upton, together with her mother Bertha, produced the widely celebrated, and collected, series of Golliwogg books which began with The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg in 1895. The work described here, unusually both written and illustrated by Florence, was produced in a very similar format to the Golliwogg books, and printed by the same publisher Longmans, Green & Co. This delightful tale describes how a little fairy called Wisp calls upon Borbee the boy-child to save the inhabitants of Fairy Land from the cruel "Allbad One".         THE POINT OF HONOR [in 1908 dust jacket]

1908. [with 1908 dust jacket] A Military Tale. Illustrations by Dan Sayre Groesbeck. New York: The McClure Company, 1908. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in white, with dust jacket. First Separate (and First Illustrated, and First American) Edition. Earlier in 1908 this tale was published in England (as "The Duel") with five others in A SET OF SIX; it was this McClure publication that caused the delay in the publication of the American edition of the entire A SET OF SIX until 1915. (Also, no publisher was in a hurry to do so: in 1908 Conrad's career was at its nadir, but his star rose again after CHANCE hit it big in 1914.)~This copy is in the first and usual binding, with "McClure" at the foot of the spine. (THE POINT OF HONOR was published in September 1908; by November, the publisher McClure was forced to sell his assets to Doubleday Page, and subsequently-bound copies bear the new publisher's name at the foot of the spine.)~This is a fine, bright copy. Included is the very scarce color-pictorial dust jacket (reproducing the volume's frontispiece plate; the rear panel promotes a Booth Tarkington novel that was likewise published in 1908). The jacket is in near-fine condition, with very little soil (a few short edge-tears but only one shallow chip, at the top of the front panel partially impinging on the title's "NT"). We have seen only one Conrad dust jacket earlier than this (the American YOUTH, 1902). Cagle A13c.

Men of the Day No 1117 "Below the Mark " Samuel Langhorne Clemens

London: Vanity Fair, 1908. Color lithograph. Image measures 14.5 x 8". Sheet measures 15 x 10.25." Accompanying text page with same dimensions. This portrait depicts the American writer Mark Twain, otherwise known as Samuel Langhorne Clemens. His portrait corresponds directly to his description: "He has white hair, a ferocious, lamby, white moustache, and he wears white dress suits." Made when Clemens was 72, the portrait conveys a sense of the author as famous yet still mysterious. He holds his pipe in one hand and has the other behind his back, his eyes looking intently off the page over his gold-rimmed glasses. The accompanying text describes his various pursuits as a novelist, lecturer, and humorist, which all together make up the enigmatic identity of "Mark Twain." The print is in very good condition with bright white paper and attached tissue as issued. Text printed above and below the image. Text panel has minor discoloration and wear to edges.<BR><BR>The British Vanity Fair (1868--1914), a compendium and often critique of Victorian culture, is best known today for its lithographed caricatures of contemporary figures and issues. Its portrait series pictured and described--with both praise and caricature--prominent Victorian and Edwardian politicians, lawyers, doctors, and similar professionals. These images, as well as other series of portraits, accompanies literary and political articles, cultural reviews, serialized fiction, and other standard weekly magazine features. As the publication grew, it turned increasingly toward gossip as a topic, as reflected in the long-running series of portraits.

        Brockhaus Konversations-Lexikon 14.Auflage, 17 Bände, 1908-1910, Originalverpackt (!)

F.A. Brockhaus 1908-1910, Leipzig - Originalverpacktes Exemplar in Schubern & Schutzumschlägen (!) Brockhaus Konversations-Lexikon. Vierzehnte (14.) vollständig neubearbeitete Auflage. Neue Revidierte Jubiläums-Ausgabe. 17 Bände (Grundlexikon A-Z & Supplement-Band). F.A. Brockhaus, Leipzig, 1908-1910. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London: Methuen and Co,, 1908. With a frontispiece by Graham Robertson. Octavo. Original pictorial blue cloth stamped in gilt on front cover and spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, partially unopened. With the dust jacket. Housed in a green cloth chemise and quarter green morocco slipcase. Black and white frontispiece by Graham Robertson. Small bookplate to front pastedown. Very faint crumpling to spine tips, light tanning to endpapers, a few spots to fore and bottom edges of text block. A beautiful copy in fine condition in an equally bright jacket with minute nicks. First edition, first impression. With a loosely inserted autograph letter signed from the author to Captain J. C. Grahame. In the letter, dated 22 July 1908 and written on the author's headed paper from Mayfield, Cookham, Grahame apologizes for being unable to assist his correspondent with his genealogical research. He admits to not having a "genealogical head" and explains: "I possess practically nothing, & am not in communication with anyone who could help, having long lost touch with any Scottish connexions". The year 1908 was the momentous one in which Grahame retired from his position as secretary of the Bank of England, moved back to Cookham, where he had lived as a child, started to put down the stories which would be published, still in that same year, as The Wind in the Willows. Grahame briefly evokes his new life at Cookham, "I have rather more leisure", and does not hide his relief on having given up the city, where "the strain was becoming all too much for me". Extremely rare in the first issue jacket and in such good condition, extraordinary with an autograph letter.

The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe.

Akron, Ohio: The Werner Company, 1908. Centenary edition, limited to 1,000 sets. Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco, with titles and tooling to the spine, top edge gilt. Illustrated. A very nice set. Edgar Allan Poe was a member of the American Romantic Movement of the Nineteenth Century. He is best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, and he is considered the inventor of the genres of detective fiction and, the then emerging, science fiction. The anguish in his fiction reflects the torment he experienced from his financial difficulties. Indeed, he was one of America's earliest practitioners of the short story, and he was the first popular American writer to attempt to live off the income of writing alone. In light of his unexpected but immense contributions, the Edgar Award is presented annually for distinguished work in the mystery genre.

The Adventures of Borbee and the Wisp, The Story Of A Sophisticated Little Girl And An Unsophisticated Little Boy.

4to.

Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon & Andes being records of travel on the Amazon and its tributaries, the Trombetas, Rio Negro, Uaupés, Casiquiari, Pacimoni, Huallaga, and Pastasa; as also to the cataracts of the Orinoco, along the eastern side of the Andes of Peru and Ecuador, and the shores of the Pacific, during the years 1849&#150;1864. Edited and condensed, with a biographical introduction, portrait, seventy-one illustrations and seven maps. In two volumes.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1908 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Spines a little faded and worn at ends, browning to endpapers, still a very good copy. Portrait frontispiece, 71 illustrations, 7 maps (the last folding). First edition. One of Wallace's later works was this edition of the botanical papers and diaries of his friend and co-Amazonian explorer Richard Spruce, who had died in 1894. "This work best reflects [Spruce's] gift for analysis, description, and narrative, along with his dry humour" (ODNB). Spruce had been sent to South America in 1849 by Hooker, Bentham, and other botanists; Bentham was to receive, name, and distribute the plants he sent home. Towards the end of the year Spruce travelled up the Amazon to Santarém, at the mouth of the Tapajos, where he met Wallace and the lepidopterist Henry Walter Bates. Spruce spent three years on the rivers Negro and Orinoco, entering Venezuela and discovering many plants new to science, including 200 species of fungi in the rain forest of the Uapes. His travels were interrupted in 1852 when he returned to the River Negro to assist Wallace, who had been struck down by malaria, and oversee his safe passage down river. After extensive travels, Spruce remained on the Pacific coast until 1864, when he lost his entire capital in the collapse of a Peruvian bank. He returned to England in 1867 after an absence of 18 years. The work stands as a landmark of ethnobotany. Among Spruce's discoveries were a number of plants with medicinal properties, including the datura and coca plants. (It was his samples of the latter, sent to Berlin, which helped Dr Nieman isolate the active principle of the alkaloid cocaine in 1858.) Spruce also made the first detailed reports of ayahuasca and yopo and the ceremonial usage of these hallucinogenic plants. (See Schultes & Hofmann, Plants of the Gods, for numerous references to Spruce.) Provenance: with the small ownership stamp of Roger Perry and a bookplate recording his donation to the Spruce memorial plaque installed at Coneysthorpe, Yorkshire in 1971. Roger Perry (1933&#150;2016) was director of the Charles Darwin Research Station, Galapagos, from 1964 to 1970. Howgego, S41.

        The Wind in the Willows

London: Methuen and co., 1908., 1908. First Edition. Octavo. Bound in recent full blue morocco, gilt ruled panelling to boards, raised bands and gilt titles to spine; top edge gilt, other edges uncut, marbeled endpapers. Frontispiece by Graham Robertson. Original publisher's green cloth front board, showing Mole and Rat boating under the gaze of Pan, and spine with gilt titles and a portrait of Toad in driving togs bound in at rear. Handsomely bound; negligible shelfwear. Internally clean and free from foxing. Stamp to title in blue , "Presentation Copy"; frontispiece tissue guard shows small ink mark. Kenneth Grahame, banker, essayist and successful author of 'The Golden Age' (1895) and 'Dream Days' (1898), had effectively given up writing by the turn of the twentieth century, much to the disappointment of his publisher. He did, however, continue to make up stories for the amusement of his only son, the partially-sighted Alistair, known as 'mouse'. The first such story was requested by the child, who asked for a bedtime story about 'a rat, a mole and a giraffe.' Grahame was supposed to be downstairs, attending to his dinner guests, but instead told a story about animals having a picnic by the river. The maid overheard the story and later told Grahame's wife Elspeth about it. The stories continued and a 'Toad' character developed. When Mouse went away in 1907 the tales continued in correspondance. The maid, showing considerable foresight, preserved all the letters, which chronicle Mr Toad's adventures in almost the same words they would later be published in, under the title 'The Wind in the Willows'. The letters make up the second half of the book, in which Toad steals a motorcar and lands himself in prison, only to be saved by the kindly gaoler's daughter.

The Singular Experience of John Scott Eccles

Strand Magazine, Newnes, 1908 The rare first appearance of this Sherlock Holmes story. Later collected in His Last Bow. Out of the entire collection of Holmes stories by Doyle, this is the only story in which a police inspector (specifically, Inspector Baynes) is as competent as Holmes. Very good in wrappers. The twentieth century Strand magazines are actually much scarcer than the 19th Century copies because the circulation was much smaller by then.
