Artist Published, United Kingdom - Please see the list below of the inclusions in this group; they were sent to Cipe Pineles (1908 - 1991) award-winning Austrian-American graphic designer, the first woman director for many influential publications including Mademoiselle, Seventeen and Charm and on the Vogue London staff; Pineles had a long friendship with the artist, also a friend of both of her husbands, Bill Golden and William Burtin. Feliks Topolski (1907 - 1989) Polish artist and stage designer, early in his career moved to London: " An early commission was to draw the first cover of Night and Day, a short-lived periodical through which he gained literary friendships, including that of Graham Greene .His fluent graphic style was from the first equally effective in newspapers, magazines, or books; for example, George Bernard Shaw became a firm admirer, and commissioned him to produce illustrated editions of three of his plays. Shaw described him as 'an astonishing draughtsman; perhaps the greatest of all the impressionists in black and white'. He was also commissioned by Shaw to design stage sets. The war years of 1939-45 consolidated Topolski's British reputation as an exceptionally gifted draughtsman, adept at recording history as it happened. He became an official war artist in 1940 and began by making drawings of the London blitz.worked extensively for magazines in Britain and the United States internationally celebrated and remained so In all he produced twenty-two books. A graphic published parallel (to his many large-scale mural works, several commissioned by British royalty) was Topolski's Chronicle (1953-79 and 1982-9), which reproduced drawings from the artist's extensive travels throughout the world. Nine of his portraits are in the National Portrait Gallery, and a substantial collection of his work (30 paintings and 550 drawings) is in the national museum of Poland in Warsaw. Further examples of his work are in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, and the Imperial War Museum Topolski received many awards for his work, about which four television programmes were made ." (please see the ODNB for an expanded biography) Letters, notes, postcards signed: Autograph letter signed, Twyford UK dated 23 August 1937.         A near-complete run of fifteen volumes of this classic British Sports and Sportsmen series, lacking only the 'Big Game Hunting and Angling' volume

London, Sports and Sportsmen Limited, [1908 to the late 1930s] (the only volumes with publishing dates printed in them are noted below). Imperial quarto, 15 volumes, extensively illustrated throughout. All volumes are uniformly bound in the publisher's full black morocco, lettered and decorated in gilt on the spines and front covers, with gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; about ten spines are sunned to varying degrees (but in only one instance, the 'Racing' volume, is it in any way moderately heavy); a few spines are lightly marked; a few corners are slightly rubbed and bumped; slight silverfish damage to the bottom margin of a small number of leaves in the 'Breeding' volume; trifling signs of handling and storage; overall an excellent and impressive run. Each volume is uniformly hand-numbered (426 of 1000 copies). The Angas family crest is stamped in gilt on the front cover of each volume, presumably as issued by the publisher, under instructions from Charles Howard Angas (1861-1928), a grandson of George Fife Angas. In alphabetical order, the present set is as follows. [1] Athletic Sports, Tennis, Rackets, and other Ball Games. [2] Breeding, Agriculture, Country-Life Pursuits. [3] Commerce and Industry. [4] Cricket and Football (1917). [5] Golf, Athletics, Tennis, Hockey and other Ball Games, Winter Sports. [6] Hunting. [7] Modern Commerce, Transport, Motoring and Aviation. [8] Modern Flat-Racing, Steeplechasing, Point-to-Point Racing, Coursing and Greyhound Racing. [9] Polo and Coaching. [10] Racing. [11] Shooting and Deerstalking. [12 and 13] Sportsmen of the Past (in two volumes). [14] The Story of Shipping. [15] Yachting and Rowing (1916). 'Part of the intention in publishing the series was to legitimise sport history and to bring together much of the lore that surrounded the various sports and their "heroes"' (from the 2006 catalogue 'Sport: An Exhibition of Material from the Monash University Library Rare Books Collection', accessed online).         My African Journey [in] The Strand Magazine Volumes XXXV and XXXVI

London: George Newnes, Janurary to December 1908.. [Literary Magazine]. FIRST APPEARANCES. In two volumes. Octavo (24 x 17cm), pp.iv; 720; pp.iv; 800. Also with 'The Pot of Caviare', 'The Silver Mirror' and 'Reminiscences of Mr. Sherlock Holmes' by Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as contributions from Arthur Morrison, Richard Marsh and Edith Nesbit.

        Midsummer Night's Dream, A.

London: William Heinemann, 1908 - "An Almost Perfect Setting for Rackham's Devic Imagination"Edition de Luxe Signed by Arthur RackhamBound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for E. Joseph[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, William. A Midsummer-Night's Dream. With Illustrations by Arthur Rackham. London: William Heinemann, 1908. Edition de Luxe, limited to 1,000 numbered copies signed by the artist, this being copy No. 687. Large quarto (11 3/8 x 9 inches; 290 x 229 mm.). [6], 134, [1, blank], [1, imprint] pp. Forty color plates mounted on brown art paper, with descriptive tissue guards. A few text pages lightly browned, some light foxing to descriptive tissues.Bound ca. 1991 by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for E. Joseph (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in) in full dark brown crushed levant morocco. Covers ruled in gilt, front cover pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt to match the original 1908 cover design, spine paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt-ruled board edges and turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. A near fine copy."Within twelve months appeared Shakespeare's A Midsummer-Night's Dream, De la Motte Fouqué's Undine, and the Grimm brothers' Fairy Tales, all very different in quality and feeling, as demanded by the texts, but all of extremely high quality. The Dream was, of course, an almost perfect setting for Rackham's devic imagination -- perhaps only bettered by the opportunity of The Tempest -- with the result that some of the fairies, elves and goblins he created for this play are among his finest colour images, and almost all the plates echo perfectly the mysterious interweaving of lightness and depth in this great work. Many of the formal plates are exquisite, whether they depict the principal events of the main theme of the story, such as the translated Bottom with his ass-head mocked by tree sprites, or the night-rule of Titania's haunted grove, those incidents within the subsidiary action, with details hardly dreamed of by Shakespeare, such as the gnomish knife-grinder in a motley group of fairies. Some of the floriated headings for the Dream are the finest of Rackham's line at the time, as for example the heading vignette for Act One, Scene One, which with typical Rackham irrelevance spreads its tendrils over the page, and into the text, ignoring the fact that the setting is supposed, according to Shakespeare, to be the Palace of Theseus, and throwing us immediately into a tangle-wood Rackhamerie, with mice, pixies and a sleeping maiden." (Fred Gettings. Arthur Rackham, pp. 117-123).Latimore and Haskell, p. 32. Gettings, p. 177. Riall, p. 87. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
