Original art): Chelsea Conflagration Sunday April 12, 1908 "Homeless"

[Boston?] 1908 - Original illustration. Pen, ink, and gouache, highlighted with white. Approximately 11" x 7". One (archival?) tape repair on verso, and tipped onto foamcore with two pieces of (archival?) tape, slight age-toning, else near fine. Illustration of the burnt out husks of buildings, with a cat plaintively leaning on the chest of a forlorn dog, apparently wondering where their next meal is coming from. Beneath the image is the single caption "Homeless". The conflagration in question is also known as The Great Chelsea fire of 1908, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, directly across the Mystic River from Boston in which 19 people were killed and 15,000 people left homeless. Wind-born sparks were carried from a fire at the Boston Blacking Company that was thought to be under control, but which spread to the many wooden frame buildings of the neighborhood. Prodigious relief efforts resultedationwide; hopefully some of it made its way to the abandoned house pets.

Baki's Dîwan Ghazalijjât nach den Handschriften von Leiden, Leipzig, München und Wien herausgegeben, I-II. [TWO VOLUMES].

Leiden, Buchhandlung und Druckerei vormals E. J. Brill, 1908-11. - Two volumes bound in one. Pp. 304; lxxv, 306-666. Text in Ottoman Turkish in Arabic script. Original printed stiff wrappers of both volumes are bound-in. In fine condition. Handsome copy in excellent state of preservation. ~ First edition. Extremely rare. The scientific study of Turkey and its history and culture in Czech lands dates back to the 19th century. Founders of this branch of "Oriental studies" were Max Grünert (1849-1929), Jaromír Bretislav Kosut (1854-1880), but especially their luminary student Rudolf Dvorák (1860-1920). Dvorák finished his doctoral studies in Leipzig and became a professor of Oriental philology at the Charles University in Prague. He is well known for his critical edition of the poetic work of the 16th-Century poet Baki (1526-1600), the greatest ghazal writer of Turkish literature whose ghazals were "minutely tooled with the care of a jeweller". Dvorák's work on Baki's Diwan is presented here in its completeness in the very rare first edition, one of Brill's pioneering works on the subject. For the evaluation of Dvorák's translations see Ludek Hrebícek, "Preklady Rudolfa Dvoráka z turectiny", 1961. A complete bibliography of Dvorák's work can be found in "Archiv Orientální" 28/1960.       Artist Published, United Kingdom - Please see the list below of the inclusions in this group; they were sent to Cipe Pineles (1908 - 1991) award-winning Austrian-American graphic designer, the first woman director for many influential publications including Mademoiselle, Seventeen and Charm and on the Vogue London staff; Pineles had a long friendship with the artist, also a friend of both of her husbands, Bill Golden and William Burtin. Feliks Topolski (1907 - 1989) Polish artist and stage designer, early in his career moved to London: " An early commission was to draw the first cover of Night and Day, a short-lived periodical through which he gained literary friendships, including that of Graham Greene .His fluent graphic style was from the first equally effective in newspapers, magazines, or books; for example, George Bernard Shaw became a firm admirer, and commissioned him to produce illustrated editions of three of his plays. Shaw described him as 'an astonishing draughtsman; perhaps the greatest of all the impressionists in black and white'. He was also commissioned by Shaw to design stage sets. The war years of 1939-45 consolidated Topolski's British reputation as an exceptionally gifted draughtsman, adept at recording history as it happened. He became an official war artist in 1940 and began by making drawings of the London blitz.worked extensively for magazines in Britain and the United States internationally celebrated and remained so In all he produced twenty-two books. A graphic published parallel (to his many large-scale mural works, several commissioned by British royalty) was Topolski's Chronicle (1953-79 and 1982-9), which reproduced drawings from the artist's extensive travels throughout the world. Nine of his portraits are in the National Portrait Gallery, and a substantial collection of his work (30 paintings and 550 drawings) is in the national museum of Poland in Warsaw. Further examples of his work are in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, and the Imperial War Museum Topolski received many awards for his work, about which four television programmes were made ." (please see the ODNB for an expanded biography) Letters, notes, postcards signed: Autograph letter signed, Twyford UK dated 23 August 1937.
