        Pride and Prejudice

London: J. M. Dent & Co.; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York,, 1907. With twenty-four coloured illustrations by C. E. Brock. Octavo. Original vellum, elaborate decoration and titles in gilt to spine and front cover, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, pictorial endpapers. Colour frontispiece with tissue-guard, vignette title page, and 22 colour plates by Brock. Front cover slightly sprung, browning to endpapers, slight nicks to endpaper edges; an excellent copy. First colour illustrated Brock edition, with previously unpublished plates, deluxe vellum issue. This is the second overall Brock edition, with his black and white illustrations used in Macmillan's 1895–7 series; with Brock illustrating Pride and Prejudice and Hugh Thomson illustrating the other five titles. A decade later, J. M. Dent, realising Brock's potential as a colourist, commissioned him to redo the Pride and Prejudice suite, this time in colour, and to create colour illustrations for the other five Austen titles. Dent's "Series of English Idylls" thus presents the first Brock illustrations for the complete Austen set and the first in colour. Though sometimes qualified as "chocolate-box", Brock's illustrations showed a sharp eye for characterisation and the ironic humour of Jane Austen's world. His drawings were also well-researched; he and his brother collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.

Spine losses, splits and restorations, covers toned and soiled, minor toning at extremities of uncut edges, some spine stitching broken with resultant loose quires (but still square), in overall unusually fine condition, a wonderful set, particularly scarce in the original wrappers. This massive bibliography (the boxes 17 x 15 x 12-1/2 in. together and over 67 lbs.) was assessed at the Grolier Club’s 1981 exhibition “2000 Years of Bibliography” (taking its place among the 169 signal entries from Callimachus of Alexandria to the NUC Pre-1956 Imprints) as the most luxurious bibliographical publication of its century and one of penetrating scholarship. “Prince d'Essling, grandson of Andrea Masséna, Napoleon’s ablest marshal, and son of a passionate book collector, Prince François-Victor, assembled a vast collection of early Venetian woodcut books which served as the basis for his bibliography of Venetian illustrated books 1450-1525 (preceded by the description of a xylographic book and followed by a summary list of some noteworthy later volumes). It is the most exhaustive bibliographical study of illustrated books of any place, country, or period hitherto published and set new standards for descriptions.” (Breslauer, Bernard H., and Folter, Ronald, Bibliography, its history and development, New York: Grolier Club, 1984, no. 144, pp. 186-7) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        THE TALE OF TOM KITTEN

1907. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1907. Original grey-green paper-covered boards with cover pictorial onlay. First Edition of Beatrix Potter's eleventh book. She wrote it during 1906, not long after buying Hill Top Farm in Lakeland; it is the garden there that provides the setting for the tale of Tom Kitten, his sisters Mittens and Moppet, and their mother Tabitha Twitchit. Jemima Puddleduck also makes an appearance; she was to be the focal point of Beatrix Potter's very next book.~The first three printings were all during 1907, and were so dated; according to Linder the three are "believed to be identical." This copy is in grey-green paper-covered boards; others were in reddish-beige, or in decorated cloth (no priority). This is a fine, bright copy of this very fragile volume, with scarcely any wear at all. Linder p. 427; Quinby 13.

Literatur: Mascha 591; Ramiro 351. - Abgebildet in: L’Art et le beau, 1907, Nr. 6, S. 123; G. Kahn, Das Weib in der Karikatur Frankreichs. Stuttgart, 1907.

Grant of arms, donated by Alfred Scott Scott-Galty, Garter, Principal King-of Arms and William Henry Weldon Esq. Norroy to George Buckworth-Herne-Soame, formerly Harrison (1872-1912).

      - British Empire, London, d.d. 18 November 1907. Vellum charter, good condition. 60x52 cm. Manuscript text and calligraphy, with 4 hand coloured coats-of-arms amongst which that of Harrison. With the orginal signatures of the mentioned officials and their wax seals in two disc shaped copper casings. Encased in a made to fit oblong wooden case, with metal closing mechanism and clothed with red linen, decorated in gold with EVIIR initials and crowns. George Day Harrison (1872-1912) obtained a Royal licence which is included in this lot to change his name to Buckworth-Herne-Soame. The Harrison coat of arms had therefore to be changed into a combination of the Harrison and Buckworth-Herne-Soame coats of arms. This grant of arms officially changes the coat of arms. George Buckworth-Herne-Soame was apparently (chief) engineer of the South Potteries Water Works Company in Staffordshire although the grant of arms mentiones that he is lieutenant colonel of the Staffordshire Artillery Volunteers. The coat-of-arms bears the family motto: de mieulx je pense en mieulx. The grant explains that Harrison lives in Radford House in the parish of Stone in de county of Stafford. He married Evelyn, the second daughter of Sir Charles Buckworth-Herne-Soame Baronet late of Sheen in the county of Surrey. H97

Christian Science Church Manual

[SAMUEL CLEMENS] FREDERICK W. PEABODYRemarkable document! A copy of the Christian Science Church Manual, signed by its owner, Peabody, with handwritten notes by Mark Twain, who used it in preparing his famous 1907 polemic against Mary Baker Eddy and the church she founded.Book signed: "Frederick W. Peabody/Notations by Mark Twain" on title page, 95 pages, 5¼x7¼, hardcover. Church Manual of the First Church of Christ Scientist by Mary Baker G. Eddy, The Christian Science Publishing Society, Boston, Massachusetts, 1899, 11th Edition. Label affixed to front cover: "Church Manual of the First Church of Christ/Mark Twain's Copy With Annotations". This book, which belonged to Peabody, has been annotated by Clemens, the noted author and lecturer who was known for his efforts to debunk frauds - especially those whom he deemed as religious charlatans. FREDERICK W. PEABODY has been described as a "detached or critical" biographer of Mary Baker Glover Eddy. SAMUEL L. CLEMENS, popularly known as "Mark Twain", directed his scorn toward both Mrs. Eddy and her religion in his 1907 book, Christian Science. The book attacked Eddy, whom he maintained could not have written Science and Health, the book that served as the basis for her beliefs, as well as the basic tenets of her new religion, which are presented in the book offered here. MARY BAKER EDDY (1821-1910) had published the book, Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures, in 1875. In 1892, she reorganized her church in Boston, renaming it The First Church of Christ, Scientist, commonly known as The Mother Church. The Manual of the Mother Church, first published in 1895, had its final revision in 1908, the year Eddy founded "The Christian Science Monitor". She had established The Christian Science Publishing Society, the publisher of this book, in 1898, the year before this edition was published. Signature page lightly soiled, glue stains at blank left margin. Cover stained at upper edge, worn at upper and lower edges of spine. Overall, in fine condition.

"This edition is a reprint of the 1898 edition, with added illustrations and larger pages" (Latimore and Haskell)."In 1898 Messrs. Dent and Co. first published 'The Ingoldsby Legends,' with about one hundred illustrations of mine. This book has met with a very satisfactory reception, but the publisher's have felt with me that, with the addition of new drawings, a careful overhauling would make it worthy of publication in a more important form, in which greater prominence could be given to the illustrations by better and larger reproductions, including a greater number of illustrations in colour."To this end the following has been done:"The frontispiece and the coloured illustration facing page 508 have been specially drawn, and all the other illustrations in colour have been worked on to a considerable extent, and specially coloured for this edition. A few illustrations in the earlier edition have been omitted and in their place have been added those facing page 254 and on pages vi, 25, 37, 316, 320, and 333."Many of the pen drawings have been reconsidered and worked on again - those which have been worked on to any great extent being now signed with both dates, 1898 and 1907. Of the rest, reproductions on a larger scale have been made in all but a few cases, and the text has been revised and entirely reset for this edition' (Rackham, Prefatory Note).Latimore and Haskell, pp. 30-31.
