1907. Granger, Moses Moorhead. A FAIR ANSWER TO THE CONFEDERATE APPEAL AT RICHMOND. [Self-published, 1907]. 12mo., printed blue wraps; 32 pages. First- and only- edition. A treatise debunking many claims made by Southern states and politicians that led to the Civil War. "Richmond" in the title refers to the unveiling of a statue of Jefferson Davis on June 3, 1907 in that city and speeches at the time stating that Davis and the Southern states will eventually be vindicated for their actions leading to and during the Civil War. Granger [1831-1913] was born and also died in Zanesville, Ohio, where he was a lawyer and a judge. He served with Company S of the 122nd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, where he earned the ranks of Lt. Colonel and Colonel. With an autograph note signed by Granger inside the front cover discussing some copyright confusion over the book's publication and with a "Publisher's Weekly" ink stamp on the same page. With another lengthy autograph note on the last page by Granger, discussing the politics and various historic events that led to the war, mentioning The Missouri Compromise, The Nebraska Bill, etc. Very rare, with the only copies I have been able to locate in institutional libraries. Good condition (some chipping covers but contents clean & tight; some repair to covers, spine & inside front cover with clear archival tape). $1,250.00.

Fine, with some toning and edgewear to mount. Gelatin silver print, triple mounted, with C. Houston Goudis blindstamp and Goldensky blindstamp on mount, INSCRIBED by Maclaren beneath image ("Yours Faithfully, Ian MacLaren"). Image: 6 1/4 x 4 1/2 in. Maclaren was the pseudonym of Presbyterian pastor and Scotsman John Watson (1850-1907). He earned popular (but decidedly not critical) success in 1894 with BESIDE THE BONNIE BRIER BUSH - "The combination of sentimentality, humour, and religion in a rural Scottish setting proved a successful formula both in Britain and North America and Watson achieved instant fame" (ODNB).Maclaren also enjoyed great popularity in the United States as a lecturer-this photograph, by the prominent Philadelphia portrait photographer Elias Goldensky, captures Maclaren during his third and final American lecture tour. Often in ill-health, he would suffer a fatal case of tonsilitis during the tour and die unexpectedly in Iowa.

Caracalla and Geta - Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema,.

Grant of arms, donated by Alfred Scott Scott-Galty, Garter, Principal King-of Arms and William Henry Weldon Esq. Norroy to George Buckworth-Herne-Soame, formerly Harrison (1872-1912).

British Empire, London, d.d. 18 November 1907. Vellum charter, good condition. 60x52 cm. Manuscript text and calligraphy, with 4 hand coloured coats-of-arms amongst which that of Harrison. With the orginal signatures of the mentioned officials and their wax seals in two disc shaped copper casings. Encased in a made to fit oblong wooden case, with metal closing mechanism and clothed with red linen, decorated in gold with EVIIR initials and crowns. George Day Harrison (1872-1912) obtained a Royal licence which is included in this lot to change his name to Buckworth-Herne-Soame. The Harrison coat of arms had therefore to be changed into a combination of the Harrison and Buckworth-Herne-Soame coats of arms. This grant of arms officially changes the coat of arms. George Buckworth-Herne-Soame was apparently (chief) engineer of the South Potteries Water Works Company in Staffordshire although the grant of arms mentiones that he is lieutenant colonel of the Staffordshire Artillery Volunteers. The coat-of-arms bears the family motto: de mieulx je pense en mieulx. The grant explains that Harrison lives in Radford House in the parish of Stone in de county of Stafford. He married Evelyn, the second daughter of Sir Charles Buckworth-Herne-Soame Baronet late of Sheen in the county of Surrey. H97

Is Mars Habitable? A Critical Examination of Professor Percival Lowell's book "Mars and Its Canals", with an Alternative Explanation

London: Macmillan and Co., 1907. First edition. 8vo. xii, 110, (2 advertisement) pp. Publisher's green cloth, gilt rules to the spine and upper board, gilt lettered to the former and with a circular title device incorporating the author's initials to the latter, the early pictorial bookplate of a Pat Murray to the front pastedown. Frontispiece and a plate. Some very mild rubbing to the extremities, a very good copy. Wallace's public refutation of Percival Lowell's theory of Martian canals and with it the possibility of life forms and even an advanced civilisation having existed on the red planet, the latter's book having been first published the year before. The work can be seen as an extension of Wallace's previous book "Man's Place in the Universe" of 1903, in which he argued that Earth was the only place in the universe that could support life due it to being the only planet which could sustain water in liquid form.

SOUTH AFRICA: POTCHEFSTROOM (NORTH WEST PROVINCE). MAP OF POTCHEFSTROOM SHEWING FIFTEEN MILE RADIUS.

Cyanotype on cotton cloth (Very Good, overall impressive condition for a map of its nature and size, some tack marks and small tears in blank margins of corners, minor fraying along edges, some wear along old folds, minor staining), 91 x 76.5 cm (36 x 30 inches). - Potchefstroom: ‘Tracing made from Sunprint by A. Mitchell’, June 14, 1907. An Exceptionally rare - seemingly unrecorded – and impressively large ‘Sunprint’ or cyanotype map on cotton cloth, depicting Major Robert Lyle McClintock’s advanced topographical survey of the environs of Potchefstroom, South Africa, executed in the period following the Second Anglo-Boer War, made in Potchefstroom after the original survey composed in Pretoria. - This excellent map showcases Major Robert Lyle McClintock’s 1907 advanced topographical survey of the environs of Potchefstroom, South Africa, the traditional de jure capital of the Transvaal, which here has been printed on cotton cloth by the gorgeous cyanotype, or ‘sunprint’, method. Indeed, this is one of the largest and most finely produced cyanotype maps were have ever encountered. The map is by far and away the most detailed and accurate survey of the Potchefstroom region even made to date, depicting topographical features with extreme precision, with elevations expressed by contour lines at 50-foot intervals. The city of Potchefstroom, with its neat grid of streets, occupies the centre of the map, while the railway to Johannesburg (to the northeast) runs to the west of town. The ‘Cantonment’ (local army barracks), is located to the northwest of the city, while the ‘Government Experimental Farm’ and the ‘Mooibank Settlement’ are located to the southwest. Elsewhere, the map labels dozens of rural homesteads, properties and major topographical features. The ‘Reference’ (lower left margin) explains symbols for Roads; Tracks; Farm Boundaries, Homesteads / Houses; Fences; Dry Water Courses; ‘Kaffir Crawls’ [an archaic, politically incorrect term for a native South African cattle enclosure]; Heights above the area’s mean sea level of 4,242; Dam Pans; Telegraph Lines and Inter-Colonial Boundaries. The present cyanotype map is noted as being a ‘Tracing made from Sunprint by A. Mitchell, Potchefstroom, 14 – 6 - 07’ (lower left corner), having been copied from McClintock’s original manuscript or printed survey, which had been composed in Pretoria earlier that same year (we have not been able to trace any records of a Pretoria manuscript or a printed edition), as indicated by the note on the present map, ‘Compiled in the office of the General Staff, Army Headquarters, SA, from the latest available information. / R.L. McClintock Bt Major / Pretoria Feby 1907’ (lower right corner). The survey represented on the present map was one of many commissioned by the General Staff of the British Army in South Africa, headquartered in Pretoria, of locations in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony, provinces that had been recently conquered from the Afrikaners during the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). McClintock was an especially esteemed engineer and veteran of the war, and it is was only fitting that he was chosen to survey the Potchefstroom area, which was one of the most important of all the Transvaal mapping projects. .         Istoriko-revoliutsionnyi al'manakh izdatel'stva "Shipovnik." Pod obshchei redaktsiei V. L. Burtseva [Historical revolutionary almanac of the publisher "Shipovnik", edited by V. L. Burtsev].

St. Petersburg, Izdatel'stvo "Shipovnik"; tip. "Delo", [1907]. - 382, XXVIII pp. Twelve leaves of illustrations. Contemporary quarter calf with gilt title to spine (original wrappers not preserved). 8vo. A rare publication commemorating key milestones and figures of the Russian revolutionary movement. The print run was largely confiscated and destroyed by the Tsarist police, leaving only the few copies which had already been distributed. The reason is quite clear: aside from events such as the zemstvo reform of 1864 and the founding of the State Duma, the almanac also lists the dates of major terrorist attacks, assassinations, as well as mass uprisings, in addition to the publishing dates of important revolutionary journals, and the decisive trials or executions of early revolutionary martyrs. These are arranged in order, from January 1 through December 31, and range from the early 19th century through 1906. Many of the entries are by noted writers and activists, such as the expressionist Leonid Andreev, the realist Aleksandr Kuprin, or the future critic and Soviet cultural commissar Anatoly Lunacharsky. The book reproduces photographs of many relatively little-known terrorists, and is especially noteworthy for the lovingly executed calendar leaf illustrations for each month, which were executed in black and red by such noted artists as Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, Boris Anisfel'd, Ivan Bilibin, Boris Kustodiev, Eugene Lanceray, and Zinovii Grzhebin. The book was reprinted in 1917 as "Kalendar' russkoi revoliutsii" and appears equally uncommon as such. The Bernstein-Souvarine catalog lists only the 1917 re-edition (no. 131), but not this first edition. KVK and OCLC locate copies at Berkeley, Cambridge, Chicago, Hoover, Library of Congress, Madison-Wisconsin, Syracuse, as well as the German State Libraries in Berlin and Munich. - Binding gently rubbed; a few pages lightly finger-soiled; private bookplate; about very good.         Pride and Prejudice

London: J. M. Dent & Co.; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York,, 1907. With twenty-four coloured illustrations by C. E. Brock. Octavo. Original vellum, elaborate decoration and titles in gilt to spine and front cover, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, pictorial endpapers. Colour frontispiece with tissue-guard, vignette title page, and 22 colour plates by Brock. Front cover slightly sprung, browning to endpapers, slight nicks to endpaper edges; an excellent copy. First colour illustrated Brock edition, with previously unpublished plates, deluxe vellum issue. This is the second overall Brock edition, with his black and white illustrations used in Macmillan's 1895–7 series; with Brock illustrating Pride and Prejudice and Hugh Thomson illustrating the other five titles. A decade later, J. M. Dent, realising Brock's potential as a colourist, commissioned him to redo the Pride and Prejudice suite, this time in colour, and to create colour illustrations for the other five Austen titles. Dent's "Series of English Idylls" thus presents the first Brock illustrations for the complete Austen set and the first in colour. Though sometimes qualified as "chocolate-box", Brock's illustrations showed a sharp eye for characterisation and the ironic humour of Jane Austen's world. His drawings were also well-researched; he and his brother collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.
