Wiener Werkstätte Bilderbogen Nr. 29. "Das Kletterbüblein".

Wien, 1907 - Wien, o. J. [um 1907]. Farblithographie - Orig. ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (First Edition Illustrated By MILLICENT SOWERBY)

London: Chatto & Windus, 1907. Carroll, Lewis (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. Illustrated by Millicent Sowerby with twelve full-page colored plates. London: Chatto & Windus, 1907. First Edition with 1907 on the title page (missing on later issues) and 8pp of adverts at the rear of the volume. A NEAR FINE copy in original publisher's cloth blocked in blind and lettered in gilt with a colorful, bright & unrubbed circular onlay to the upper cover. A beautiful example of the first Alice book published legally without using Tenniel's illustrations when, in 1907, copyright changes led to an immediate golden age of Alice Illustration as Sowerby was soon followed by Rackham, Tarrant, Hudson, Pogány, Laurencin, and many other superb interpretive artists. The front free endpaper has a little pull to it and bears a neatly inked previous owner inscription. The binding is a little cocked. But a better example of this lovely book sans dust jacket would be hard to find.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Illus. by Millicent Sowerby.

Mit eighd. 5zeiliger Widm. von Sarah Bernhardt, dat. 1918. - Exlibris a. V., zwei Worte in Widm. etw. verwischt, Ebd. etw. berieben, schönes Expl. März 1923 in Paris. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Ehrlich on the front wrapper: “H. Prof. Dr. Kamell(?) in [. . .] hochachtung P. Ehrlich.” Stamp of the Johns Hopkins Medical School Library.

First Edition, Offprint Issue. The first account of induced microbial drug resistance, a now widespread phenomenon that has become a major concern for physicians and the pharmaceutical industry. Ehrlich encountered induced drug resistance in microbes while researching arsenical preparations as cures for sleeping sickness and other trypanosome-caused illnesses. His paper, delivered as a lecture on Feb. 13, 1907, “explained how the widely varying stains of trypanosomes, which at first reacted with great sensitivity to chemotherapeutic agents, gradually became drug resistant and how this property was passed on to their offspring for many generations” (Bäumler, Paul Ehrlich, p. 128). Ehrlich continued to investigate drug-resistant trypanosomes for several years, recognizing that resistance provided an important tool for studying mechanisms of immune response. This copy bears a presentation inscription in Ehrlich’s bold hand; we have not been able to identify the recipient. The South Polar Times

London: Smith, Elder, & Co.,, 1907–14. 3 volumes, quarto. Original navy blue cloth, titles gilt to spines and upper boards, inset coloured pictorial decoration to upper boards within gilt rope-twist borders, all edges gilt. Housed in blue morocco-backed drop-back box by Aquarius. Profusely illustrated with chromolithographic and black and white plates - some mounted, a number from Ponting photographs - and text illustrations, including caricatures and silhouettes of expedition members. Just a touch of rubbing to the spines, the contents clean, sound and unshaken, the gutta-percha binding remaining solid, in all respects an excellent set. First collected edition. Volumes I and II limited to 250 copies, these both numbered 2, Capt. Scott's copies, and volume III limited to 350, this copy with the limitation leaf uniquely marked "Presentation Copy" and presented to Kathleen Scott after her husband's death. "A visually exact reproduction of the The South Polar Times originally issued during the Antarctic expeditions of Robert F. Scott, the first two volumes were published in 1907 with a preface by Scott. The original had been edited and printed by Ernest Shackleton who produced five issues between April and August 1902, each in a single typewritten copy. After Scott sent Shackleton home in March 1903 the next volume was edited by Louis Bernacchi, from April to August. Edward Wilson was the principal illustrator, though contributions and illustrations came from both officers and crew." (Books on Ice). The final volume was edited by Apsley Cherry-Garrard during Scott's last expedition of 1911, and published in 1914. Together they form what is perhaps the most personal of the printed documents to have come out of the Heroic Era of Antarctic exploration, revealing the often contradictory aspects of the participant's personalities. As Scott explained in his preface, publication was proposed in "March 1902 [when] we were busily preparing for our first Antarctic winter as we watched the sun sinking towards its long rest. We knew that daylight would shortly disappear for four whole months, and our thoughts turned naturally to the long dark period before us and the means by which we could lighten its monotony." The expedition scientists were to "write luminously on their special subjects, and to record scientific events of general interest", while "lighter matter" indulging "any shy vein of sentiment or humour that might exist among us" was encouraged under "the cloak of anonymity." The exercise certainly seems to have achieved its aim, as Scott recounts; "I can see again a row of heads bent over a fresh monthly number to scan the latest efforts of our artists, and I can hear the hearty laughter at the sallies of our humorists and the general chaff when some sly allusion found its way home." Superb association copies, it is difficult to imagine a better provenance.

        Chemotherapeutische Trypanosomen-Studien.

1907 - First Account of Microbial Drug Resistance Ehrlich, Paul (1854-1915). Chemotherapeutische Trypanosomen-Studien. Offprint from Berliner klinischen Wochenschrift, no. 9-12 (1907). 42pp. 222 x 145 mm. Original printed wrappers, slightly toned and chipped, small split in lower spine. Very good copy. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Ehrlich on the front wrapper: "H. Prof. Dr. Kamell(?) in [. . .] hochachtung P. Ehrlich." Stamp of the Johns Hopkins Medical School Library. 13, 1907, "explained how the widely varying stains of trypanosomes, which at first reacted with great sensitivity to chemotherapeutic agents, gradually became drug resistant and how this property was passed on to their offspring for many generations" (Bäumler, Paul Ehrlich, p. 128). Ehrlich continued to investigate drug-resistant trypanosomes for several years, recognizing that resistance provided an important tool for studying mechanisms of immune response. This copy bears a presentation inscription in Ehrlich’s bold hand; we have not been able to identify the recipient. Autograph letter signed to Mr. Salter

3-1/2 pp. Octavo. Dated Leipzig, June 28, 1907. In German (with translation). Relative to concert engagements and fees, expressing his wish to "conduct as many concerts as possible or play sonatas," mentioning the premiere of his violin concerto, etc. "As you know, I am permitted to do concerts from April 1, 1908, as much and where I want to. That is why I can do the Steetin concert on April 1; whereas I cannot possibly conduct a premiere of my violin concerto in Berlin on January 20, unless I am willing to pay a 10,000 Mark fine... So if you could see to it that I get as many engagements as possible, either for conducting or sonata evenings with Mr. Marteau... I would be much obliged. So please see to it that in the time of April 1 to 15, 1908, I can conduct as many concerts as possible or play sonatas." Slightly worn and browned; one file hole to upper margin not affecting text; creased at folds, with short splits at upper and lower central folds and one side fold; two short marginal tears. . "The opening decade of the 20th century saw an increasing recognition of [Reger's] music among Catholic circles, where it had been largely ignored because of his preoccupation with Protestant genres. His concert activity in Munich also increased, particularly in his role as accompanist for the violinist Marteau, who later gave the first performance of his extremely demanding Violin Concerto (1907–8). The monumental concerto for piano and orchestra (1910) was written for another Munich friend, Frieda Kwast-Hodapp." John Williamson in Grove online Henri Marteau (1874-1934), a French-born Swedish violinist, was regarded as one of the greatest performers of his time; he gave the premiere of Reger's Violin Concerto op. 101 with Artur Nikisch and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra October 15, 1908 referred to in the present letter.

        The South Polar Times.

London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1907–14 - 3 volumes, quarto. Original navy blue cloth, titles gilt to spines and upper boards, inset coloured pictorial decoration to upper boards within gilt rope-twist borders, all edges gilt. Housed in blue morocco-backed drop-back box by Aquarius. Just a touch of rubbing to the spines, the contents clean, sound and unshaken, the gutta-percha binding remaining solid, in all respects an excellent set. Profusely illustrated with chromolithographic and black and white plates - some mounted, a number from Ponting photographs - and text illustrations, including caricatures and silhouettes of expedition members. Books on Ice 7.7; Rosove 287; Spence 1094; Taurus 42 & 79. [Attributes: First Edition]

        L'évolution créatrice.

Paris, 1907. 8vo. Bound uncut in a later brown half calf with gilt title-label and gilt lines to spine. Neat marginal repairs to a few leaves and first two leaveas trimmed at lower margin. Signed author's presentation-inscription to half-title. (4), VIII, 403 pp. + 31 pp. of advertisements from Félix Alcan.. Rare first edition, presentation-copy for Jean Baruzi, of Bergson's seminal main work, the "Creative Evolution", his most famous and influential book, which constitutes the great philosopher's cult-like showdown with Darwinian mechanism, which resulted in a theory of cosmic evolution that covered everything from biology and other sciences to metaphysics and religion.Jean Baruzi (1881-1953), an important French philosopher and historian of religion, specialized in Leibnitz and William James, was a student of Bergson. He was the author of a controversial dissertation, "St. John of the Cross and the Problem of Mystical Experience", which gave an existential-phenomenological description of religious andguish and the "lived experience" of the mystic. He was a professor at the Collège de Frace and held the Histoy of Religion chair after Alfred Loisy. In 1907, when Henri Bergson's third book, "Creative Evolution", was published, the seminal French philosopher, who had studied both mathematics and philosophy, possessed the professor chair of modern philosophy at the Collège de France. Though the book was the result of several years of extremely thorough research, Bergson himself could have hardly foreseen the effect that this book was going to have throughout the 19th century with an amazing revival in the 20th century, making him one of the most important philosophers of his time.Always committed to the reality of time as the basis and as a source of creative change, Bergson, in his magnum opus, sets out to free the sciences of psychology and biology from the materialism and mechanism that had dominated them in the late nineteenth century and due to which they had been made unable to explain creativity, growth and change. He makes an amazing new contribution to the theory of knowledge by providing an account of creative evolution and the creative mind, thereby freeing psychology and biology from a number of problems otherwise unsolvable through philosophical and scientific explanations. Bergson accepts the historical facts of evolution but rejects all the mechanistic and materialistic explanations of the evolutionary process. Like Darwin, he accepts natural selection as an explanation of extinction, but he does not accept it as an explanation of evolutionary change, and likewise with Lamarck, Spencer, and the orthogenesists, he accepts the foundational theories of evolution but only to the point at which mechanism or materialism sets in, instead of which, he basically explains further change and growth with a basic vital principle that accounts for creative changes. As such, "Creative Evolution" sets out to found a philosophy that can account for the continuity of all living things, for both the creation of life and the diversity that results from creation, and Bergson does this with his idea of an original vital principle, a governing immaterial force of life, a sort of natural creative impulse, that embraces the whole of life in one. The book was hugely popular when it appeared, and its immediate immense influence lasted a couple of decades, making Bergson an internationally acknowledged cult-like hero of a French intellectual. After the Second World War, though, the interest in Bergson decreased, only to be reawakened in the late 1960'ies where a growing interest in his works re-emerged, making him to this day one of the most read philosophers of the early 20th century. There can be no doubt as to the continued influence of his works

Het verhaal van Tom het Poesje. uit het Engels, The Tale of Tom Kitten.

Warne and Co Ltd 1907. bound, Original wrappers, 27 lithographs complet. 85pp. first translating in Dutch.Beatrix Potter (1866-1943), was an English children?s book author and illustrator, primarily. She was also a farmer, a conservationist, and a natural explorer fascinated by science and the wonders of the natural world around her, be they flora or fauna. From a very early age, Potter took to the outdoor world like a fish to water, rambling the countryside, woods and waterways near her home whenever she could. She was a lonely child. Her younger brother Bertram was sent away to boarding school, and Potter had few friends. As well, the lion?s share of her upbringing was seen to by various servants, nannies and governesses. Most days, Potter would only see her parents at bedtime, though they spent time together as a family on special occasions.Perhaps it was this loneliness and isolation that was the catalyst for Potter?s imagination and devotion to nature. Necessity is the mother of invention, and Potter?s few social interactions resulted in her creating an imaginary world of friends inside herself, for amusement and to keep herself company. Her most iconic character, Peter Rabbit (more famous than his siblings Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail) was named for a real-life beloved pet that Potter used to bring along for adventures on a leash. This sense of isolation and longing to belong may also contribute to the enormous popularity with children of Potter's stories - the wonder, delight and magic in the tales are accompanied by a real understanding of the wistfulness and loneliness that color the experience of being little.
