Autografo. CARUSO Enrico. 1873-1921. 1 immagine allegata.

(12 3/5 x 5 7/10 inches). 8 half-titles, 6pp. list of subscribers, 8pp. errata. 7 coloured titles, coloured frontispieces in volumes I-V (one chromolithographed), photogravure portrait frontispiece of the authors in vol.VII, 413 plates (373 photogravures, 40 uncoloured lithographs). Original pictorial wrappers within seven cloth-backed board portfolios with ties, contained within seven fine modern green half morocco boxes. An exceptional set in original parts of this inspirational privately-printed work on the trees growing in the British Isles, China, Japan, the Mediterranean and the Americas at the turn of the 20th century A valuable record of trees from around the world: with a significant number of examples from China, Japan, the Mediterranean and the Americas. All illustrated by very fine photogravures, most showing specimen trees in gardens in the British Isles, but with a number of images showing the species in their native habitats. The work was published by subscription. The exact number of copies printed is not known but the subscribers' list runs to 244 names, with a further 12 individuals or institutions receiving a presentation copy.Elwes and Henry took John Claudius Loudon's Arboretum Et Fruticetum Britannicum; or, the trees and shrubs of Britain (7 vols, London: 1835-1838) as their starting point. Loudon recorded every tree of note in the British Isles, and after a period of over half a century when most of the specimens had suffered considerable neglect, Elwes returned to examine Loudon's trees anew and to record subsequent introductions. 'In taking stock of the results, the task which my friend Mr. Elwes has set himself differs ... from that which Loudon accomplished. That amounted to little more than a descriptive catalogue ... The present work aims at ascertaining the practical results [of growing various species]. What are the most favourable conditions for the growth of each species? What in turn are the most suited for different circumstances? And what, if any, profit can be derived from their cultivation on a large scale?' (W.T. Thistleton-Dyer writing in the 'Preface').         Rock-Climbing in North Wales

Keswick: GP Abraham, 1906 Black cloth covers, some blind tooling, corners very lightly rubbed. Spine has titles in gilt, edges bumped slightly. Internally, black endpapers, half title and tissue guarded frontis present, (xx), [2], 394 pp, [4], [1], 30 pl, 10 pen and ink drawings, 11 outline drawings of the chief routes, top text block edge in gilt. The most important and the scarcest of the classic Jones-Abraham trilogy, rarely found in such lovely condition. George & Ashley Abraham were pioneers of Lakeland rock exploration. They usually climbed together, George—bandy-legged but with strong hands—in the lead; he was the more patient, working out the sequence of his moves. He was punctilious about the nailing of his boots and could place the edge nails into the smallest wrinkle in the rock. He climbed for fifty years without there being any record of his falling.         A Staff Officer's Scrap-Book During the Russo-Japanese War

Edward Arnold London: Edward Arnold. 1906. Fourth impression. Octavo. Blue cloth gilt. Very good or better with some wear to the extremities, and light spotting to the boards. Tipped in the front endpapers of this copy are four Typed Letters Signed and one Signed photograph from the author. In addition there is another letter gifting the book to, and subsequent correspondence between, Hamilton and John Page Nicholson, a Colonel during the American Civil War. The letters have been folded for mailing with only minor general wear, near fine. Hamilton was knighted in 1902 for a distinguished record in India, Africa, and Afghanistan. His image was later tarnished due to his involvement in the failed Gallipoli Campaign during World War I, subsequently detailed in his two volume Gallipoli Diaries published immediately following the war. The letters, on British War Office stationery and dated between 1906-1909, thank Nicholson for his interest in the book, oblige his request for a photo, and include a few passing references to the American Civil War including the battles at Antietam and Gettysburg. Nicholson was a veteran of the Savannah and South Carolina campaigns; a leading military historian, most notably the editor of the two volume Pennsylvania at Gettysburg; and an early supporter of preservation efforts at Gettysburg and Valley Forge. An interesting association copy connecting two notable military men of letters. .

Story of A Fierce Bad Rabbit by Beatrix Potter author of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" Etc. Frederick Warne & Co., London & New York (December 1906),(FIRST EDITION/2nd ISSUE), with "New York & London" on rear cover, 12mo; unpaginated accordion-fold/panoramic wallet-style light green cloth binding First edition 2nd issue state; one of only two Beatrix Potter stories first published in this special and very rare wallet form, with 14 full-page illustrations and 14 pages of text in one long accordion folder with green linen backing. A very good copy with fragile tab hinge intact; an entirely unsophisticated copy - offered with a very modest reserve - RARE The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit was written for publisher Harold Warne's little girl, Louise, who told "Aunt Beatrix" that Peter "was much too good a rabbit, and she wanted a story about a really naughty one!"(Linder, 183). This accordion style book was not popular with booksellers; customers tended to leave them unfolded and the books were inconvenient to re-fold. Consequently, these titles went out of print after the first two printings. They were not reissued until 1916, and then in book form only. (Quinby 12). The present work is entirely intact, with some old creasing, and light soiling to some pages, cover and tipped-in plate on front cover, Wallet intact, including tab and slot, with rubbing to silver. A notoriously fragile printing, usually found quite worn and disjointed. Very rare and highly collectable.
