THE STOLEN PLANET: A SCIENTIFIC ROMANCE.

London: Philip Wellby, 1906 - Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii [viii] ix [x] 11-282 [283-288: ads], original pictorial blue cloth, front panel stamped in black, white, cream and brown, spine panel stamped in black, white and cream, all edges untrimmed. First edition, first issue. Pages [283-88] comprise publisher's advertisements for 1906 publications. The author's first SF novel. "Science fiction story set in the very near future in which a spacecraft voyages (after a brief look at some planets in the solar system) in interstellar space. It finds the remains of a dead, advanced civilization on a planet wandering in space, visits Sirius . before . returning to the solar system. There it removes an asteroid from its orbit and places it in orbit round the earth as a second moon, where its tidal action causes disasters." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 152. "Imaginative (if unscientific) as fiction . Perhaps a source for C. S. Lewis's Perelandra series." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1452. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-717. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 538. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 32. Locke, Voyages in Space 142. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, Additions. Bookplate of noted fantastic literature collector William Harry Hopkins affixed to front paste-down. Lacks the front free endpaper, some light foxing, largely to first two leaves and edges of text block, else a nearly fine copy with colorful pictorial binding clean and free of rubbing (latter a fault common to this book). A lovely copy of a book rarely found in nice condition. The first issue of this book is quite scarce. (#149651) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Proclamation by the Mayor--1906 "Shoot to Kill" Broadside from the San Francisco Earthquake (Two Different Versions)

Altvater Print, San Francisco 1906 - Two versions of the famous "Shoot to Kill" broadside issued in San Francisco the day of the 1906 earthquake. One has the correct date, and another is an unrecorded copy with a date of April 13th (five days before the earthquake) and a different typset. 1. (Correct date) Tears and a few millimeters of loss at two corners. "Proclamation by the Mayor / The Federal Troops, the members of the Regular Police Force, and all Special Police Officers have been authorized to KILL any and all persons found engaged in looting or in the commission of other crimes.E. E. Schmitz, Mayor. Dated, April 18, 1906." 2. (Unrecorded with wrong date) Same text, but with a date of April 13th, 1906. There is loss of part of the last letters on lines on the page where a 2 1/2" x 0.5" strip was missing and another piece of brown paper was placed in with inking in of the missing letters. In Seventy-Five Years in California 1831-1906, by William Heath Davis, a proclamation with another different typeset is presented as an original, still with the same wording. Several versions seem to have been distributed, but ones with errors may not have entered wide circulation. E. E. Schmitz was a notorious mayor on several fronts, not just ordering war on citizens. He was convicted of extortion and forced out of office in 1907, yet ran for mayor again in 1915 and 1919. ; 9 1/2" x 6"

        Lord Randolph Churchill

London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. Churchill's first biographic work concentrates on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Lord Randolph died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his father's biography Winston Churchill was still an itinerant soldier and war correspondent who had yet to write his first book. The son still dwelt very much in his father's shadow, both emotionally and in terms of the political career to which he already aspired. By the time the work was published in 1906, the young Winston Churchill already had half a dozen books to his credit and half a decade in Parliament. By 1906 Churchill had already left his father's political party, prevailed in the same political battle that had terminated his father's career, and was just two years from his first Cabinet post. Churchill was criticized by some reviewers for overplaying his father's accomplishments. Nonetheless, the work was well received both as a frank portrayal of Randolph's extremes and as a showcase for the son's literary talent. The first edition is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear. Here is a good set. The red cloth bindings remain square and tight, with minor wear to extremities. Spine presentation is better than usual, with some of the typical sunning, but still retaining bright gilt and respectable red color, with only some minor stains to the lower spines and a little wrinkling to the spine ends. Of note, spine appearance and overall binding condition is uniform, indicating that this is an original, mated pair. The contents remain quite bright with spotting light for the edition, substantially confined to the first and final leaves and untrimmed page edges. The same previous owner's decorative bookplate is affixed both front free endpapers and a different owner name (the same in both volumes) written in pencil on the second blank endsheet of Volume I and the first free endpaper of Volume II. The Volume I pastedown bears the decorative bookplate of the British colonial civil servant Sir Robert Benson Ewbank (1883-1967). The Volume I first free endpaper facing Sir Ewbank's bookplate features a five line inked gift inscription to him thus: "To Sir Robert Ewbank. | Who has always been such a | very kind friend to my Stepmother Josephine | Eleanor Calthrop | November 27.1960."       Frank S. Holby, New York 1906 - Octavo, Gilt lettered and decorated leather spines. Marbled paper covered boards. Deckled outside edges. Top edges gilt. Some minor edge scuffs and three volumes have some light chipping to spine ends. Otherwise a fabulous set of this wonderful author's complete writings, including letters. Color frontispiece in each volume by Charles Edmund Brock and Henry Matthew Brock. Edited by R. Brimley Johnson with an introduction by Professor William Lyon Phelps, Ph. D. Includes Austen's novels Sense and Sensibility;Pride and Prejudice; Mansfield Park; Emma; Northanger Abbey; and Persuasion as well as her short works and letters. Jane Austen December 16,1775 - July 18, 1817 was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th century realism. Her plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her works, though usually popular, were first published anonymously and brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
