        Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1906., 1906. First Rackham Edition. Quarto. Recently bound in half brown morocco with gilt titles and gilt to spine, publisher's original boards with gilt pictorial upper. With 50 mounted colour plates, captioned tissue guards. Very few, light and occasional specks of foxing, a couple of tissue guards creased. All this being very precise: the book looks superb inside and out. London-born artist Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) studied drawing at evening classes at Lambeth School of Art (1884) for 7 years whilst working full-time in insurance. He began to illustrate books, using the then new half-tone process his fame spread ing upon publication of his illustrated Grimm's Fairy Tales. In 1905 his illustrated Rip van Winkle introduced him to the US public; one year later Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was published. Rackham was made a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908, and was honoured abroad, with gold medals from Milan (1906) and Barcelona (1911). His illustrations for many classics followed including Alice In Wonderland (1907), Gulliver's Travels (1909), Aesop's Fables (1912), A Christmas Carol (1915), King Arthur (1917) Cinderella (1919), Sleepy Hollow (1928), The Night Before Christmas (1931), Hans Andersen (1932), Pied Pier of Hamelin (1934) and Poe's Tales (1935). His final book was The Wind In the Willows (1940). Riall p74. Latimore/Haskell p.27. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [126]. BMC No.1 [1984]; 'Edwardian Children's Books'.         PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1906. The Limited and Signed De Luxe First Edition, one of only 500 numbered copies. With 50 tipped-in color plates with captioned tissue-guards, and except for the frontispiece, bound in rear as issued. And with a number of additional line drawings by Arthur Rackham. 4to, publisher's original de luxe vellum, with lettering on the spine in gilt, the upper cover with the fine decorative designs in gilt and additional elaborate designed gilt lettering, front endpaper with the map of Kensington Gardens, t.e.g., original silk ties of gold. 126 pp. + plates pp. A superior copy in the original vellum, very fine inside and out. A VERY HANDSOME AND FINE FIRST EDITION. FIRST ISSUE OF THE LIMITED AND SIGNED PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS. AN OUTSTANDING DE LUXE COPY of what is widely considered Rackham's best work of illustration, and is certainly one of the most popular. PETER PAN is now quite scarce in even the trade issue of the first edition. PETER PAN is Rackham's most famous book. Within, we find many of the artist’s best loved and most easily recognized paintings. Perhaps the Pall Mall Gazette summed it best when they said, “Mr. Rackham seems to have dropped out of some cloud in Mr. Barrie’s fairyland, sent by a special providence to make pictures in tune with his whimsical genius.”

The Integrative Action of the Nervous System.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1906. - First Edition, American issue of PMM 397 (citing imaginary New Haven: Yale University Press, 1906 imprint) and Garrison-Morton 1432. xvi, 411 pp; 85 figs. Original cloth. Signature of former owner on front flyleaf, else Near Fine. A British issue was published in London by Archibald Constable. Silliman Lectures. The verso of the half-title of the Scribner's issue lists the three Silliman lectures to that point (by J. J. Thomson; C. S. Sherrington; E. Rutherford). The verso of the half-title of the Constable issue is blank. The verso of the title page of the Scribner's issue says 'Copyright, 1906, by Yale University. Published October, 1906. The University Press, Cambridge, U.S.A.' The verso of the title page of the Constable issue says 'Copyright, 1906, by Yale University for the United States of America and Great Britain. Printed at the University Press, John Wilson and Son Cambridge, U.S.A.' Dawson's catalogue 214 (February 1971) states that publishing records show the Constable issue was published in October 1906, whereas the Scribner's issue was not published until December 8, 1906, and thus it is claimed that the British issue is the true first edition. 'This work stands as the true foundation of modern neurophysiology; it is considered by Fulton to rank in importance with Harvey's De Motu Cordis' (Garrison's History of Neurology, p. 229). 'The creative energy of Sherrington, who probably did more to influence thought in modern medicine than any other Englishman since William Harvey, has been attributed to his broad humanism. He was a book collector, a poet, and a polished writer with a wide knowledge of classical languages and literature, of general history, and especially of the history of art. From Sherrington's comprehensive studies, and particularly those carried out on monkeys and the higher apes, there emerged the vast sweep of present-day knowledge of neurophysiology--the nature of the knee-jerk, reciprocal innervation of motor areas, focal epilepsy, the proprioceptive system, and finally the broad concepts of 'the final common pathway' and the 'integrative action of the nervous system' ' (Fulton & Wilson, Selected Readings in the History of Physiology, p. 306). Grolier, Medicine 90. Norman 1939. Heirs of Hippocrates 2198. Charles S. Sherrington: Nobel Prize, Medicine or Physiology, 1932 (shared with Edgar Adrian), 'for their discoveries regarding the functions of neurons.' [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Lord Randolph Churchill with Lord Randolph's pasted-in signature

London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, only printing of Winston Churchill's biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, a lifelong mated pair bearing Lord Randolph's pasted-in signature. The two-volume work concentrates on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Winston Churchill's father died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his father's biography Winston Churchill was an itinerant soldier and war correspondent who had yet to write his first book. The son still dwelt very much in his father's shadow, both emotionally and in terms of the political career to which he already aspired. By the time the work was published in 1906, the young Winston Churchill already had half a dozen books to his credit and half a decade in Parliament. By 1906 Churchill had already left his father's political party, prevailed in the same political battle that had terminated his father's career, and was just two years from his first Cabinet post. Churchill was criticized by some reviewers for overplaying his father's accomplishments. Nonetheless, the work was well received both as a frank portrayal of Randolph's extremes and as a showcase for the son's literary talent. The first edition is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear and the contents to heavy spotting. This is a reasonably typical set, in good plus overall condition, notable chiefly for better than usual spine color, for being a lifelong matched pair, and for bearing the pasted-in signature of Lord Randolph Churchill. The bindings show overall scuffing and wear to hinges and extremities and are slightly shaken, with cosmetic splits to the front pastedown gutters, but with the mulls beneath still intact. The contents are bright with spotting light for the edition, primarily confined to the untrimmed page edges. The same previous owner name and date is inked on each front pastedown ("Edwin Adams | 20.6.08"). Randolph Churchill's clipped signature is pasted to the Volume I front pastedown. The bindings are protected with removable, archival quality clear mylar covers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.1, Woods A8(a), Langworth p.69

        Lord Randolph Churchill

London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a two-volume British first edition set with interesting provenance. Churchill's first biographic work concentrates on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Lord Randolph died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his father's biography Winston Churchill was still an itinerant soldier and war correspondent who had yet to write his first book. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear. Here is a very good set with interesting provenance. This copy comes to us from the collection of Oscar-winning actor and director Lord Richard Samuel Attenborough (1923-2014). Moreover, the front pastedowns of both volumes bear the armorial bookplates of Henry Arthur Lascelles. Lt. Col. Henry Arthur Lascelles (1842-1913) fought in the Indian Mutiny and in the Ashanti Campaign. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Rifle Brigade. He was invested as a Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) The red cloth bindings remain quite respectably bright, with lightly bumped corners, and only modestly faded spines that retain good color and bright gilt. The only noteworthy blemish is a roughly 1.75 x .75 inch spot of moisture exposure and consequent discoloration at the upper rear cover of Volume I at the hinge. The contents are bright with light intermittent spotting throughout. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.1, Woods/ICS A8(a), Langworth p.69.
