Photo Album]: Construction of the "Devils Bar-B-Q" at Devils Lake State Park in Baraboo, Wisconsin

      - Oblong quarto album. Rawhide tied flexible boards with hand painted illustration of a Native American in a canoe, and "Snap Shots" and "Wisconsin Dells" embossed, all on the front board. 86 snapshots, mostly sepia-toned, many with printed decorative border. Various sizes, but mostly between 4.5" x 2.75" and 6" x 3.75". Small chip on the margin of one image, some modest fading, overall very good or better. A seemingly complete and unpillaged family photo album. The album is devoted about equally between outdoor family scenes with the other half devoted to construction of the family's "Devils Bar-B-Q" stone building, including some overlap - family members posing in front of the Bar-B-Q shack. The album shows stone construction, wood framing of floors and interior, an interior shot of the finished counter, as well as several featuring the neon sign, and some of what seem like a later addition to the building, as well as what seems to be an adjunct roadside drinks and ice cream stand. Undated, one picture shows a 1906 Ford, but our guess is that this is considerably later, perhaps circa mid-1920s. A wonderful album illustrating America's preoccupation with road food as the population became more mobile.

        Fruits of Solitude

Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1906. First thus. Very good+ in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt decorations and borders on the front board and gilt text stamping on the spine with a 5 1/2" long scratch to the front board which did not touch the Lakeside Press logo or the gilt borders. This scratch has been filled-in and re-colored to make a close match to the original cloth cover. The gilt decorations and text are clean and bright. The first free end page shows a 3/8" diameter ink smudge. The pages are free of any foxing, names or notations. This is the smallest of the Lakeside Classics in terms of both weight and width being only 130 pages (129 numbered). The full title reads: "Fruits of Solitude Reflections and Maxims Relating to the Conduct of Human Life." The fourth Lakeside Classic issued at Christmas time in 1906. It is considered by many collectors as either the first or second most difficult copy to obtain in this series. The book was first published in England anonymously in 1693. According to the introductory notes by John Vance Cheney in this volume "two editions and a reprint were published the same year." The Lakeside Press used an eleventh edition of the title printed in Philadelphia in 1794 as the foundation for this copy. A very handsome, clean and collectible copy!

Die Orden und Ehrenzeichen Anhalts wie der sächsischen Herzogtümer seit Beginn des XIX. Jahrhunderts. Mit 15 Bildtafeln.

München, Selbstverlag des Verfassers, 1906.. Two parts in one volume. Quarto (31x22 cm). Pp. 60, (1); 65-148, (3). Plus 15 plates including frontispiece with numerous images to each, partly printed in chromolithography and partly in collotype. Original printed green wrappers, front detached, spine worn, bookblock consequently loosening. In fine internal condition, excellent plates. ~ First edition. Very rare. The wonderful plates are printed in monochromatic collotype and in chromolithography, respectively. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. An authoritative manual on chromolithography in 1885 (Colour and Colour Printing, by W. D. Richmond) asserts the need for at least nine separate stones to achieve such richness, but in fact the number of stones used was often more than twenty. ~ Provenance: From the library of C. P. Mulder, renowned collector and international heraldry authority, with his charming armorial bookplate,"Nil Desperandum", to first free endpaper. For a complete catalogue of Mulder's library, from which we offer a considerable number of items, see: C. P. Mulder: "Catalogue of Works on Orders, Decorations and Medals in the Library of C. P. Mulder" (Rotterdam, 1988). See also: C. P. Mulder & A. A. Purves: "Bibliography of Orders and Decorations" (Copenhagen, 1999).

+++ 19,4 x 26,4 cm, 0,6 kg. +++ Stichwörter: Bibliophilie nummeriert limitiert illustriete Bücher

        The Heart of the Country:

London: Alston Rivers, Ltd,, 1906. A Survey of a Modern Land. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt with gilt-stamped decoration, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Title page printed in red and black. Spine faded, head of front joint partly split, text block unaffected, slight foxing to contents. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Marwood from Ford Madox Hueffer 9th May 1906". Arthur Marwood (1868–1916), the recipient, was a highly significant figure in Ford's life: "after Madox Brown, Conrad, and James, he was to become the most important man in Ford's life and in his writing" (Saunders, p. 209). Ford met Marwood in 1905, when the two became neighbours — Marwood had moved to Winchelsea, seeking a milder climate for his tuberculosis. The two became particularly intimate in the early part of 1906, around the time this copy was inscribed. In April of that year, Ford took H. G. Wells to lunch where he "had a fine argument with the great Marwood" (Moser, p. 65). When Marwood died from tuberculosis in 1916, his death impressed Ford "more profoundly than any since those of his father and grandfather" (Saunders vol. II, p. 5). The character of Christopher Tietjens, the protagonist of Ford's war tetralogy (1924–1928), was partly a tribute to Marwood, "from whom he took Tietjens's grand Yorkshire background, mathematical skills and habit of 'tabulating from memory the errors in the Encyclopaedia Britannica'" (LRB, Vol. 34, No. 19). From the collection of Thomas Moser, Professor of English at Stanford University, though unmarked as such; he published a psychological biography of Ford Madox Ford in 1980.

The voyage of the "Scotia"; Being the record of a Voyage of Exploration in Antarctic Seas. By Three of the Staff...

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1906. A few light spots but essentially an excellent copy.. Octavo, with a frontispiece and 59 photographic plates(mostly with two images), three maps (two folding and coloured); original pictorial cloth. First edition, with the binding in Rosove's variant 'a'. This is the scarce official account of the ill-financed Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-1904, that nonetheless made important contributions to the scientific exploration of the Antarctic, undertaking the first oceanographic exploration of the Weddell Sea and charting the northern part of the Caird Coast. Rudmose Brown was the expedition botanist, Mossman was meteorologist, and Pirie was surgeon and geologist: the three collaborated to write this popular narrative, which proved to be an 'outstanding account. The text substantiates the important events, supplies a look at day-to-day life on the expedition and describes many of the most interesting scientific findings' (Rosove).       William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh 1906 - Octavo, with a frontispiece and 59 photographic plates(mostly with two images), three maps (two folding and coloured); original pictorial cloth. Provenance: Private collection (Australia) A few light spots but essentially an excellent copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Audion: A New Receiver for Wireless Telegraphy

New York, N.Y.: The American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1906. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. First Edition. viii, 952 pages. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt spine titles. Minor wear to the extremities of the binding, recently recased with new endpapers. Offered is the entire year of the Transactions of the AIEE, Vol XXV, Jan to Dec 1906, with a volume title page dated 1907 (as normal). The article by De Forest was presented at the 210th Meeting of the AIEE in NY, October 26th, 1906 and is found on page 735. This format of the Transactions includes not only the paper read by De Forest, but the extensive discussion which followed, and also some discussion that occurred in November of the same year at the Philadelphia meeting. Cloth. Edison's invention of the light bulb and the realization of vacuum tubes enabled a revolution in electronics, particularly in the field of wireless communication. Pioneering work was done by John Fleming and others on vacuum tubes, but it was the invention of the Audion by De Forest (which demonstrated the tube's ability to amplify signals) that revolutionized wireless transmission. Shiers (History of Telecommunications Technology) calls this paper the "Pioneering paper on the three-element tube." (Shiers 11-016). This paper was quite early in the development of the device - He had applied for a patent on a three element vacuum tube (not the grid version) on October 25, 1906, one day before his presentation to the AIEE. The first public disclosure of the grid type audion wasn't made until March 14, 1907. Davis in his Electrical and Electronic Technologies notes that De Forest ordered the first grid-type audions in November of 1906 from his tube manufacturer H.W. McCandless & Co, the same time period at which this device was being discussed in the 3rd of the articles in this volume. De Forest won many accolades. The 1922 Medal of Honor from the Institute of Radio Engineers, the 1946 Edison Medal from the AIEE 'For pioneering achievements in radio and for the invention of the grid-controlled vacuum tube with its profound technical and social consequences', and the Edison Medal 'For distinguished contributions to the art of electric communication, notably the regenerative circuit, the superheterodyne and frequency modulation.' (ethw) In Origins of Cyberspace (#203), Norman and Hook suggest that the Audion was the first successful electronic amplifier. An early and important work in the development of wireless, radio, and cradle period telecommunications.

Die Orden und Ehrenzeichen Anhalts wie der sächsischen Herzogtümer seit Beginn des XIX. Jahrhunderts. Mit 15 Bildtafeln.

München, Selbstverlag des Verfassers 1906 - Two parts in one volume. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Australian Golfer

Sydney, Angus and Robertson, 1906. Octavo, xvi, 260, [2] pages with 13 illustrations plus 76 plates and a detachable swing-guide sheet tipped in after the plates at the rear (this is not noted in the plate list, and it is frequently missing, and often missed by cataloguers, but it is referred to in the caption to the illustration on page 69). Cloth, top edge gilt; covers slightly marked and rubbed at the extremities, with the rear board bowed in slightly near the head of the spine; front inner hinge lightly (read, almost invisibly) reinforced; pencil underlining to eight consecutive lines on one early page; detachable swing-guide sheet is now detached (but still present); overall, this is a very agreeable copy of a scarce book, rarely found complete and in such good condition. The first Australian golf book of any substance. Daniel Gordon (Dan) Soutar was born in Carmyllie, Scotland in 1882. 'In 1888, his family moved to the nearby seaside resort town of Carnoustie where - over the next 15 or so years - he received a thorough grounding in the game of golf.... He emigrated to Australia in 1903, and made an immediate mark by winning the 1903 Australian Amateur Championship at the old Glenelg course. In 1905, he turned professional and went into partnership with Carnegie Clark making clubs at Rose Bay in Sydney. That same year he won his only Australian Open Championship at Royal Melbourne' (Australian Golf Heritage Society website). His obituary in the West Australian, 1 December 1937, provides a little more detail on this point: 'Then followed an amazing run of seconds. In the Open he filled that position on no fewer than seven occasions, in between times winning State and club championships'.
