+++ 19,4 x 26,4 cm, 0,6 kg. +++ Stichwörter: Bibliophilie nummeriert limitiert illustriete Bücher

        The Heart of the Country:

London: Alston Rivers, Ltd,, 1906. A Survey of a Modern Land. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt with gilt-stamped decoration, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Title page printed in red and black. Spine faded, head of front joint partly split, text block unaffected, slight foxing to contents. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Marwood from Ford Madox Hueffer 9th May 1906". Arthur Marwood (1868–1916), the recipient, was a highly significant figure in Ford's life: "after Madox Brown, Conrad, and James, he was to become the most important man in Ford's life and in his writing" (Saunders, p. 209). Ford met Marwood in 1905, when the two became neighbours — Marwood had moved to Winchelsea, seeking a milder climate for his tuberculosis. The two became particularly intimate in the early part of 1906, around the time this copy was inscribed. In April of that year, Ford took H. G. Wells to lunch where he "had a fine argument with the great Marwood" (Moser, p. 65). When Marwood died from tuberculosis in 1916, his death impressed Ford "more profoundly than any since those of his father and grandfather" (Saunders vol. II, p. 5). The character of Christopher Tietjens, the protagonist of Ford's war tetralogy (1924–1928), was partly a tribute to Marwood, "from whom he took Tietjens's grand Yorkshire background, mathematical skills and habit of 'tabulating from memory the errors in the Encyclopaedia Britannica'" (LRB, Vol. 34, No. 19). From the collection of Thomas Moser, Professor of English at Stanford University, though unmarked as such; he published a psychological biography of Ford Madox Ford in 1980.

The voyage of the "Scotia"; Being the record of a Voyage of Exploration in Antarctic Seas. By Three of the Staff...

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1906. A few light spots but essentially an excellent copy.. Octavo, with a frontispiece and 59 photographic plates(mostly with two images), three maps (two folding and coloured); original pictorial cloth. First edition, with the binding in Rosove's variant 'a'. This is the scarce official account of the ill-financed Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-1904, that nonetheless made important contributions to the scientific exploration of the Antarctic, undertaking the first oceanographic exploration of the Weddell Sea and charting the northern part of the Caird Coast. Rudmose Brown was the expedition botanist, Mossman was meteorologist, and Pirie was surgeon and geologist: the three collaborated to write this popular narrative, which proved to be an 'outstanding account. The text substantiates the important events, supplies a look at day-to-day life on the expedition and describes many of the most interesting scientific findings' (Rosove). Provenance: Private collection (Australia)

The Audion: A New Receiver for Wireless Telegraphy

New York, N.Y.: The American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1906. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. First Edition. viii, 952 pages. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt spine titles. Minor wear to the extremities of the binding, recently recased with new endpapers. Offered is the entire year of the Transactions of the AIEE, Vol XXV, Jan to Dec 1906, with a volume title page dated 1907 (as normal). The article by De Forest was presented at the 210th Meeting of the AIEE in NY, October 26th, 1906 and is found on page 735. This format of the Transactions includes not only the paper read by De Forest, but the extensive discussion which followed, and also some discussion that occurred in November of the same year at the Philadelphia meeting. Cloth. Edison's invention of the light bulb and the realization of vacuum tubes enabled a revolution in electronics, particularly in the field of wireless communication. Pioneering work was done by John Fleming and others on vacuum tubes, but it was the invention of the Audion by De Forest (which demonstrated the tube's ability to amplify signals) that revolutionized wireless transmission. Shiers (History of Telecommunications Technology) calls this paper the "Pioneering paper on the three-element tube." (Shiers 11-016). This paper was quite early in the development of the device - He had applied for a patent on a three element vacuum tube (not the grid version) on October 25, 1906, one day before his presentation to the AIEE. The first public disclosure of the grid type audion wasn't made until March 14, 1907. Davis in his Electrical and Electronic Technologies notes that De Forest ordered the first grid-type audions in November of 1906 from his tube manufacturer H.W. McCandless & Co, the same time period at which this device was being discussed in the 3rd of the articles in this volume. De Forest won many accolades. The 1922 Medal of Honor from the Institute of Radio Engineers, the 1946 Edison Medal from the AIEE 'For pioneering achievements in radio and for the invention of the grid-controlled vacuum tube with its profound technical and social consequences', and the Edison Medal 'For distinguished contributions to the art of electric communication, notably the regenerative circuit, the superheterodyne and frequency modulation.' (ethw) In Origins of Cyberspace (#203), Norman and Hook suggest that the Audion was the first successful electronic amplifier. An early and important work in the development of wireless, radio, and cradle period telecommunications.

Jahrhunderts. Mit 15 Bildtafeln.

München, Selbstverlag des Verfassers 1906 - Two parts in one volume. Quarto (31x22 cm). Pp. 60, (1); 65-148, (3). Plus 15 plates including frontispiece with numerous images to each, partly printed in chromolithography and partly in collotype. Original printed green wrappers, front detached, spine worn, bookblock consequently loosening. In fine internal condition, excellent plates. ~ First edition. Very rare. The wonderful plates are printed in monochromatic collotype and in chromolithography, respectively. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. An authoritative manual on chromolithography in 1885 (Colour and Colour Printing, by W. D. Richmond) asserts the need for at least nine separate stones to achieve such richness, but in fact the number of stones used was often more than twenty. ~ Provenance: From the library of C. P. Mulder, renowned collector and international heraldry authority, with his charming armorial bookplate,"Nil Desperandum", to first free endpaper. For a complete catalogue of Mulder's library, from which we offer a considerable number of items, see: C. P. Mulder: "Catalogue of Works on Orders, Decorations and Medals in the Library of C. P. Mulder" (Rotterdam, 1988). See also: C. P. Mulder & A. A. Purves: "Bibliography of Orders and Decorations" (Copenhagen, 1999). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Australian Golfer

Sydney, Angus and Robertson, 1906. Octavo, xvi, 260, [2] pages with 13 illustrations plus 76 plates and a detachable swing-guide sheet tipped in after the plates at the rear (this is not noted in the plate list, and it is frequently missing, and often missed by cataloguers, but it is referred to in the caption to the illustration on page 69). Cloth, top edge gilt; covers slightly marked and rubbed at the extremities, with the rear board bowed in slightly near the head of the spine; front inner hinge lightly (read, almost invisibly) reinforced; pencil underlining to eight consecutive lines on one early page; detachable swing-guide sheet is now detached (but still present); overall, this is a very agreeable copy of a scarce book, rarely found complete and in such good condition. The first Australian golf book of any substance. Daniel Gordon (Dan) Soutar was born in Carmyllie, Scotland in 1882. 'In 1888, his family moved to the nearby seaside resort town of Carnoustie where - over the next 15 or so years - he received a thorough grounding in the game of golf.... He emigrated to Australia in 1903, and made an immediate mark by winning the 1903 Australian Amateur Championship at the old Glenelg course. In 1905, he turned professional and went into partnership with Carnegie Clark making clubs at Rose Bay in Sydney. That same year he won his only Australian Open Championship at Royal Melbourne' (Australian Golf Heritage Society website). His obituary in the West Australian, 1 December 1937, provides a little more detail on this point: 'Then followed an amazing run of seconds. In the Open he filled that position on no fewer than seven occasions, in between times winning State and club championships'.

Missionary Map of the World Showing the Prevailing Religions of its Various Nations and the Central Stations of All Protestant Missionary Societies.

1906 - New York: August R. Ohman & Co. Inc, c.1906. Colour-printed wood engraving on two linen sheets stitched together, total 1250 x 2120mm. Two very small repairs. A huge double-hemisphere world map with the land coloured according to the dominant religion, probably used as a backdrop at fund-raising events. The key lists Protestants, Greek and Eastern Churches, Roman Catholics, Jews, Mohammedans and Heathen, although the Jewish population is too spread out to show on the map. The 'Heathens' (numbered at 845 million by the key, outnumbering all the other religions combined) fill central Africa and seem to include the Hindus of India, Buddhists of China and Shinto of Japan. August R. Ohman & Co publishers evolved from the more famous Colton firm: 'G.W. & C.B. Colton' became 'Colton, Ohman & Co. in 1898', and Ohman dropped the Colton name three years later, after which he published a number of bird's-eye views of American cities. We have dated this map from the 'Statistics of Missions, 1906' at the bottom.

Batavia, C.C. Renhard, 1758. Folio. With a woodcut device on title-page (VOC ship on a shield, flanked by Poseidon and Amphitrite, topped by an armillary sphere), folding letterpress genealogical table, and 2 large woodcuts (plus 1 repeat) with letterpress text, representing the seals of 3 Mogul rulers (each with 2 concentric circles with 11 or 13 smaller circles in between, with the ruler's name in the centre and his predecessors numbered in the surrounding circles). Modern blue paper wrappers.

Bijdragen taal-, land- en volkenkunde Ned.-Indie, LXI (1906), pp. 374-376; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 561. First edition of a history of the Mogul Empire and its southern possessions. The foreword notes that the anonymous author based his account of northern India partly on François Valentijn's history of the Dutch East Indies, Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1724-1726), vol. IV, no. 2, but that he made many additions and corrections. For the southern regions, however, he turned to natives familiar with their antiquities ("ervarene inlanders in hare oudheden"). The addenda leaf, loosely inserted in this copy, is often lacking. The woodcut circles, on pp. 33, 36 & 39 represent seals of the Mogul rulers Eurangzeeb, Prince Mohamed Azem and finally Mahomed Sjah (1719-1748), with the names of their predecessors numbered. The book includes information on the Moguls' relations with the Persians, Afghans and others and comments on the silk trade. The Mogul Empire was an imperial power that ruled most of the Indian subcontinent from the early 16th to the mid-19th centuries. At the height of its power, around 1700, it controlled most of the subcontinent and parts of what is now Afghanistan. After 1725 the empire declined rapidly. This was Renhard's most ambitious work as printer to the VOC at Batavia. It is mostly well printed from freshly cast type and gives an excellent overview of the printing office's materials, primarily 17th-century Dutch roman and italic types. It shows the considerable expansion of the press's stock in the preceding years. With the folding table slightly browned, a small hole in 1 leaf and a small marginal tear in the title-page, but generally in fine condition, with generous margins and including the errata leaf.

[The Fifth Queen trilogy:] The Fifth Queen; Privy Seal; The Fifth Queen Crowned.

London: Alston Rivers; Eveleigh Nash,, 1906-8. 3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, decoration to spines, titles to spines and front covers gilt. Spines slightly faded, a couple of hinges cracked but holding, contents lightly foxed. A very good set. First editions, first impressions. Dedication copy of The Fifth Queen Crowned, inscribed by the author on the date of publication on the front free endpaper, "Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Marwood, always aff[ectionate]ly from Ford M. H. 26th March MCMVIII"; the first volume, The Fifth Queen, has Marwood's ownership signature on the front free endpaper. The dedicatee, Arthur Marwood (1868–1916), was a highly significant figure in Ford's life: "after Madox Brown, Conrad, and James, he was to become the most important man in Ford's life and in his writing" (Saunders, p. 209). Ford met Marwood in 1905, when the two became neighbours — Marwood had moved to Winchelsea, seeking a milder climate for his tuberculosis. In late 1908, the same year the Fifth Queen Crowned was published, Ford founded the radical literary periodical, the English Review, with Marwood's financial backing. 34, No. 19). The set is from the collection of Thomas Moser, Professor of English at Stanford University, though unmarked as such; he published a psychological biography of Ford Madox Ford in 1980.

        Komposition

Internally little age-toned only, title-pages somewhat browned and soiled, a few scattered pencil markings, few pages with light marginal foxing. Provenance: Dr. H. van der Hoeven Kliniek, -utrecht (ownership stamp and signature to title-pages, cropped on 2nd). Very good copy overall. ----Grinstein 17331. RARE FIRST EDITIONS. Volume I with a foreword by Eugen Bleuler, works by C.G. Jung, Franz Riklin, K. Wehrlin and Bleuler. Volume II with works by Franz Riklin, C.G. Jung, Emma Fürst, Ludwig Binswanger and Hermann Nunberg. Offprint from "Journal of Psychology and Neurology", Vol. III-IV, complete with both volumes. In 1906 Jung sent Freud his work on Diagnostic Association studies, the beginning of a close correspondence ongoing until 1913. Freud thereupon invites Jung to come to Vienna. This is where the legendary first meeting of the two psychoanalysts takes place: in an almost non-stop, thirteen-hour conversation, both come close to each other and from that time on work closely together for a few years. For the elder one, this cooperation means that at a time when he is widely respected for his views on infantile sexuality, he gets support by a successful psychiatrist who is neither Austrian nor a Jew, "which meant he saved psychoanalysis from appearing like a kabbalistic cult of a Viennese clique "(Stevens, similar to Zaretsky). ERSTAUSGABEN. - Visit our website for additional images and information. Very Good.
