MORDEKHAI ‘IMANUEL NOAH [AND] MASAOT B’ANGLIAH, TSFARAT, SEFARD, U’V’ARTZOT BARBARIA

Warsaw: Achiasaf Society 1905 - 1st Edition [and] 1st Hebrew edition. Modern boards, 8vo, [66], 25 pages. 22 cm. In Hebrew. Two books published together. First Title is Mordekhai ‘Imanuel Noah by Rabbi Max Raisin. Title translates to Mordecai Manuel Noah. Second title is Masaot by Mordecai Manuel Noah, the First Hebrew translation of Noah’s famous "Travels in England, France, Spain and the Barbary States, in the years 1813-14 and 15." Publishing the work in Hebrew, in Eastern Europe, was a way to reach the wider Jewish world to tell the amazing story of Noah, probably the most powerful Jew in the Western Hemisphere of the early 19th Century. Both are published by the Achiasaf Society, a Hebrew language publisher founded by noted Zionist thinker Asher Zvi Hirsch Ginzberg, better known as Ahad Ha’Am. It contains a brief biography of American-Jewish statesman and proto-Zionist thinker, Mordecai Manuel Noah, and Noah’s own accounts of his travels in England, France, Spain, and the Barbary Coast. (Today known as the Greater Maghreb. ) Noah, a journalist, playwright, politician, and lawyer, was one of the most prominent Jews of Early America, and served as Consul to Kingdom of Tunis (modern Tunisia) under President James Madison. When then-Secretary of State James Monroe removed Noah from Noah’s post, citing his religion as an "obstacle", it sparked an outcry among American Jews and non-Jews alike, with Noah receiving letters of support from John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. Discouraged from pursuing government positions, Noah continued his career as a newspaperman in New York, founding and editing numerous publications there. Unfortunately, Noah is probably best remembered for his ambitious but failed attempt to establish "Ararat, A Jewish City of Refuge" on Grand Island in Upstate New York. Noah’s ardent belief that Jews would flock to his settlement to escape international persecution proved false, and "Ararat" never came to be. Masaot was written in 1814, before Noah’s removal from his position of Consul, and ten years before the failure of Ararat. His biography is written by Rabbi Max Raisin, prominent early 20th-century historian of Jewish America. SUBJECT(S) Jewish politicians -- United States -- Biography -- Voyages and Travels. London: Adam and Charles Black, 1905. First edition. Octavo (8 7/8 x 6 1/4 inches; 225 x 160 mm.). [xx], 300, [1], [1, blank] pp. Color frontispiece and fifty-three color plates after Kate Greenaway, with descriptive tissue guards, and numerous black and white illustrations, including thirty-four half-tone plates. Front and back blank leaves slightly foxed, some very minor and light marginal staining, otherwise near fine.Bound ca. 1905, most probably by Birdsall of Northampton, in three-quarter dark blue morocco over light blue cloth boards ruled in gilt. Spine with two raised bands decoratively paneled in gilt. The largest panel (3 3/4 x 2 inches) with a typical Kate Greenaway girl onlaid in various different colored morocco. Original color pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt. An excellent example. The roots of Birdsall of Northampton "stretch back to the early eighteenth century but it was in 1792 that John Lacy's Northampton bindery was acquired by William Birdsall, continuing in his family until 1961. In Birdsall's heyday, Gerring (Notes on Bookbinding, 1899) reported a staff of 250 engaged in making ladies handbags, fancy boxes, and stationary; as well as all types of bookbinding. The firm seemed always ready to experiment and careful records and samples were kept by Richard Birdsall, great-great-nephew of the founder, until he died in 1909. The firm's collection of over 3,000 finishing tools passed to the University of Toronto" (Maggs, Bookbinding in the British Isles II, #262, and #321). "Birdsall's is notable for the high quality of their leathers and finishings, as well as for the inventive style of their 'inlaid pictorial bindings'" (Chevalier Collection, Christie's November 9, 1990).         The Storm of London.

Boston; Herbert B. Turner. 1905. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's decorated grey cloth titled in black to spine and front board and embellished with dramatic scenes of London being lashed by tempest. Minor edgewear and rubbing, very good indeed. A handsome copy. Internally clean and fresh. Top edge a trifle dusty, others untrimmed. Okay, this satirical item is a bit crackers even from the dizzy heights of eccentricity I usually occupy; a bored peer attempts suicide at the height of the worst storm to hit London in years but awakes to find that everybody's clothes have disappeared, in fact all fabric has dissolved, and everyone must walk around naked. Yes, I think I had a dream like that when I was 14. Obviously it's all a little more serious than that, with the disappearance of clothes comes the disintegration of class divisions, one can no longer tell whom one's peers are from looking at them, also socialising is apparently a lot more difficult when everyone is naked. A fact I shall remember when next I attend a major bookfair. Quite odd, but a very nice copy of a very scarce book.

Original typescript drafts of Shchegolev's manuscript on Russian secret political and literary organizations in the early nineteenth century

[St. Petersburg] 1905 - Loose folded leaves of typescript to rectos only, with pages measuring 35.5 × 22 cm. Pagination in pencil, occasional corrections as well as longer foreign passages added in ink. one section incomplete; light toning and dust soil; overall very good. This collection of almost entirely unpublished and (as per our research) unknown typescript materials is devoted to the history of secret proto-revolutionary political and literary organizations in early nineteenth-century Russia. The manuscript consists of nine separate chapters, each based on extensive original research and of documentary character. Among the groups described are: "Obshchestvo literaturnykh prenii" and the secret societies of Sungurov (Moscow), Petrashevsky (St. Petersburg), Zavalishin (Moscow), the brothers Kritskii (Moscow) and others. According to our research, only one of the chapters appeared in print, under Pavel Shchegolev's name ("Obshchestvo literaturnykh prenii" in Byloe, 1907, no. 5, pp. 149-151). We thus also attribute the remaining essays to Shchegolev, though it is unclear whether they were meant to be published separately or part of a book project. Byloe was the first legally published journal devoted to the history of the Russian revolutionary liberation movement, and it was co-edited by Shchegolev and the historian Vasiliy Bogucharskii. Despite being legal, Byloe was frequently targeted by the censors and Schegolev was eventually sentenced to three years in prison for various "anti-government" publications. Schegolev (1877-1931) was a literary historian working on Alexander Pushkin; around 1905 he began researching Russian social movements, particularly the history of the so-called "liberation movement". He was repeatedly exiled for participating in revolutionary events around the turn of the twentieth century; after the February Revolution he held a position in the Provisional Government. He helped analyze the archives of the Imperial Police Department and remained active as a historian of the Russian revolutionary movement. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

IMPORTANT DOCUMENT.

INDIA – DARJEELING and SIKKIM: Map of the Eastern Himalayan Mission Field of the Church of Scotland Reduced and Compiled from the Indian Government Maps and Information Supplied by the Missionaries.

London: Privately Published by the Author in West Norwood, London S.E., . 1905 - Lithograph with original outline hand colour (Good, attractive printing and original colour, some short closed tears along extremities, a small section of blank space and border replaced with facsimile, but overall pleasing condition for a wall map), 93 x 78 cm (36.5 x 30.5 inches). The only known surviving example of a wall map of Sikkim and Darjeeling, with fascinating new information, privately printed in London by the eminent Scottish tea planter George W. Christison. This excellent wall map embraces Sikkim (today its own Indian state), Darjeeling (today a part of West Bengal) and the adjacent districts of northeastern India. Located at the foot of the Himalayas, the area is one of extreme natural beauty and cultural wealth. Highly detailed in parts, the map is predicated on advanced Indian government surveys, but also features new information supplied by Scottish missionaries and tea planters. The map was compiled by George Watt Christison, a leading pioneer in the development of the Darjeeling tea industry, and privately printed by him in London. The map depicts the Sikkim (sandwiched between Nepal and Bhutan), which lay at the foot of Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world (8,586 m / 28,169 ft); while to the south is the famous tea-growing region of Darjeeling Hills, while to its south is Darjeeling Terai; to the east is Daling Hills, and below the district of Dooars. The map labels innumerable villages, monasteries, tea plantations (known as gardens or ‘Bair’), walking paths, roads, railways and the heights of mountains (given in feet). The level of detail, especially in the Darjeeling and Daling Hills, is impressive, and of particular note are the numerous tea gardens, as well as the line of the Northern Bengal State Railway, built from 1874, which connects Darjeeling with Calcutta. The map was specifically designed by Chirstison to show the missionary activities of the Presbyterian Church in the Eastern Himalayas and, in this account, the map shows the locations of mission churches, schools (both day and night) and dispensaries. Christison’s lengthy notes in the upper right of the map, explains what is depicted, details his sources, gives an account of the region’s topography and provides a miniature map of the winding road to the famous Tukvar Tea Plantation, in Darjeeling Hills, giving an idea of the rugged nature of the country. The map was drafted at the Tukvar Plantation, but privately lithographed by Christison (likely at his residence) in West Norwood, Southeast London. The map has a wonderfully eccentric, homemade printing style, adding to the authentic quality of the piece. George Christison & Tea Gardens of Darjeeling - The region of the Eastern Himalayas showcased on the present map was culturally rich and long fiercely fought over by a number of major powers, including Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and Qing Dynasty China. Sikkim was an ancient, proud kingdom that had to continuously fight for its survival against its larger neighbors. Darjeeling was traditionally under the control of Nepal. In 1817, following the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–16), Sikkim came under the loose protection of the British East India Company (EIC), wile Darjeeling came under the effective control of the Company. In 1835, the EIC assumed sovereignty over Darjeeling. Meanwhile, the British market had an ever-increasing thirst for tea, yet the EIC was unable to acquire sufficient, economically viable sources from China, so came to look elsewhere. The British realized that the Darjeeling Hills possessed the perfect climate and soils to grown high quality Chinese teas. In 1841, the British embarked on the first experiments to grow Chinese teas near the sleepy hill station of Darjeeling. These experiments proved successful, but it was not until the 1850s that the British embarked upon mass production upon large plantations. The EIC backed the establishment of the Darjeeling Tea Company to manage the bounty, and its operations were

PREFACE: 'In the following pages I have endeavoured to lay before the reader an account of two journeys under taken in Tibet, in districts situated many hundreds of miles apart and under diametrically opposite conditions. The first expedition penetrated into the interior of uninhabited and barren regions of the Northern Desert at a time when Tibet was rigidly closed to foreigners. The second led through the rich and thickly populated valleys of the Brahmaputra, and was made with the cognisance and permission of the Lhasa Government, though only rendered possible by the notable success of Sir Francis Younghusband's Mission. The natural obstacles inseparable from exploration in Tibet are so varied and numerous, that but little progress would be made were it not for the aid given by those who are interested in travel and who are willing to render every assistance in their power. I therefore take this opportunity of tendering my thanks to all who have contributed to the success of the journeys here described, and more particularly to Colonel St. G. Gore, R.E., Mr. J. Eccles, and the Officers of the Survey of India ; Major M. Ray, D.S.O., Intelligence Branch ; and Sir Clements Markham, K.C.B., and the Council of the Royal Geographical Society. November 1905. C. G.         The Coast / Wilhelm's Magazine. FOUR BOUND VOLUMES.

Seattle. The Coast Publishing Company. February 1902to December 1905. FOUR BOUND VOLUMES OF THE MAGAZINE with covers and advertisements in modern red library binding. Black and white illustrations throughout, 10 x 7 inches, gilt lettered red cloth library binding. Covers in fine condition; bookplate (for Frederick E. Ellis, Shaw Island) on inside front cover, overall a particularly clean and crisp collection of magazines with the following minor flaws: Volume III No. 1 (February 1902) to Volume IV No. 5 (December 1902): Very good condition. Volume V No. 1 (January 1903) to Volume VI No. 6 (December 1903): Very good condition, EXCEPT for October which apparently was water damaged along the upper edge; this has been trimmed, with no loss of text. Volume VII No. 1 (January 1904) to Volume VIII No. 6 (December 1904): April 1904 issue has some light undulations due to damp, and the red color on the front cover has run, other magazines in very good condition. Volume IX No. 1 (January 1905) to Volume X No 6 (December 1905): December issue has scarcely noticeable dampstain to front cover, lightest undulation to pages, other magazines in very good condition. Volumes contain the following issues February 1902 to December 1905 (volume III, number 1) to volume X, number 6. February 1902 was the first issue under the management of Honor L. Wilhelm, and he writes in the introductory ANNOUNCEMENT: "With this number the editorial management of THE COAST passes into new hands. The young ladies who planned and established THE COAST deserve praise for the perseverance and pluck with which they met adverse and discouraging conditions and published a magazine which, considering the support they received, was a credit to the City of Seattle and the Northwest. There seems to be a field for distinctive Seattle and Northwestern literature. People are constantly writing for reliable and trustworthy information of this country. Tales of the West and its triumphant progress are sought. Northwestern ideas and thought need a chronicle, impartial and true..." The magazine provides much valuable documentation of places, life and literature in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s, and this handsome run, complete with covers and advertisements makes for fascinating reading. While the vast majority of the content relates to Washington State, there is the occasional article on British Columbia and Oregon.

        Kate Greenaway

London: Adam and Charles Black, 1905. Kate Greenaway In A Fine Pictorial Binding GREENAWAY, Kate. SPIELMANN, M.H., LAYARD, G.S. [BINDING]. [BIRDSALL, binders]. Kate Greenaway. London: Adam and Charles Black, 1905. First edition. Octavo (8 7/8 x 6 1/4 inches; 225 x 160 mm.). [xx], 300, [1], [1, blank] pp. Color frontispiece and fifty-three color plates after Kate Greenaway, with descriptive tissue guards, and numerous black and white illustrations, including thirty-four half-tone plates. Front and back blank leaves slightly foxed, some very minor and light marginal staining, otherwise near fine. Bound ca. The roots of Birdsall of Northampton "stretch back to the early eighteenth century but it was in 1792 that John Lacy's Northampton bindery was acquired by William Birdsall, continuing in his family until 1961... In Birdsall's heyday, Gerring (Notes on Bookbinding, 1899) reported a staff of 250 engaged in making ladies handbags, fancy boxes, and stationary; as well as all types of bookbinding. The firm seemed always ready to experiment and careful records and samples were kept by Richard Birdsall, great-great-nephew of the founder, until he died in 1909...

Neue Malereien für Decken un Wände. Dritte Serie. Cover title: Grohmann Maler in Dresden. Neue Malereien fur Decken und Wande. 24 Tafeln. Serie III.

Leipzig. Gilbers'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung (Eugen Twietmeyer). 1905. 21 of 24 color lithographic plates, 19 1/2 x 15 inches, decorative color paper-covered board portfolio with ribbon ties. Portfolio worn and soiled, with loss; MISSING plates 42, 51 and 52. Scattered soiling, edge tears and creasing in margins of several plates. Soiling in two plates (44 and 45); plate 38 has 4 ink spots, 2 of which are in the image (from paints used by a copyist). Beautifully executed Art Nouveau designs for decorating walls and ceilings created by Paul Grohmann, who had an extended career in creating such portfolio design publications. A number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics that emerged in upcoming decades. Exceptionally fine color lithography evident in every plate. Two plates feature a single image, ten feature two images, while the balance feature three or more images. The price list at the front of the portfolio indicates that the plates could be purchased individually or as a set and were available in two different formats (at different prices). The series begins with Plate 29 and ends with Plate 52. The colors used are primarily in pastel shades augmented by vibrant gold outlining. This type of applied art portfolio is seldom found complete, since they were used as working references. An extremely scarce title; no listing appears in WorldCat.

        [OLD BELIEVERS' CHANTS] Oktay

[Second half of 19th cent.] 200 leaves. 36x24 cm. Manuscript. The title page and frontispiece is decorated in gold, blue and green colors. Every chapter starts with illuminated headpiece and initial. Contemporary red morocco with raised bands and gilt and blind stamping. The covers are slightly deformed. Otherwise very good. This book is an interesting example of Old Believers manuscript tradition. The conservative movement of Russian Orthodox Church, Old Believers were not allowed to print their books in Russia until 1905. As a result of this supression the manuscripts were used. The style was originally taken from pre-16th century examples, but by 18th century it developed to be an independent genre. Old Believers also carried on the tradition of unison singing that died out in mainstream Orthodox Church and is known as 'kryukovoe penie' (i.e. Znamenny chant). Choral manuscripts were among the most ornamental ones. This particular one is originating from the manuscript school called 'Guslitsy'. It was probably created in Moscow area in late 19th century for the use in Old Believers' service.

C. G.         Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Lölling (Kärnten), 13. VII. 1905. - 11 SS. auf 6 Bll. 8vo. Mit eh. adr. Kuvert.

1905. BASTIDE, Jean-Francois. La Petite Maison. Paris: Librairie Henri Leclerc, 1905. Royal octavo, contemporary full light brown crushed morocco, boards gilt-decorated in Louis XV style, raised bands, green morocco doublures, frame-like ornamentation in same style with dark blue and pearl-gray inlays and gilt tooling, gray silk endpapers, marbled flyleaves, all edges gilt. Beautifully bound by Chambolle Duru.Combining fictional narrative with observations on art and architecture, La Petite Maison is the story of a woman who mistakes good taste for good intentions in a country house outside of Paris. Each etching is accompanied by a color proof, and a separate suite of the etchings is bound in at the rear. “It was in France that the [late nineteenth century] revival of etching was the most fruitful. Adolphe LalauzeÂ… is among the most prominent of the etchers who must be remembered for their illustrated books. Also in France, there developed the custom of issuing éditions de luxe for limited circulation with sets of etched illustrations in two or more states” (Harthan, The History of the Illustrated Book, 228). “Superb bindings of this sort were executed in such quantity that they came to be largely disregarded during the decades when books of the Belle Epoque were out of favorÂ… books so bound have increased in price by several hundred percent [since 1970]. Yet it may be argued that they are still substantially undervalued when compared with bindings of other eras” (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, 376-77). With original paper wrappers and spine bound in. Text in French. Expert repair to a rear signature. An elegant production in fine condition.
