        Men of Affairs

The Evening Mail, NY - This is a vanity cartoon book (also known as the 'As-We-See-'Em' books) which includes a number of interesting people. There is no title page and no text; only about 200 plates of caricatures by one or another of the artists, who were the staff cartoonists for this newspaper. Undated but made around 1905. Rebound: was originally bound in soft leather, and the scarred front cover of the original has been applied to the new leather cover. New binding in excellent condition; overall vg-, as there are occasional light marginal stains on the plates. Notables include B.F. Yoakum, H.E. Huntington, and W.K. Vanderbilt (railroad barons), Isaac and Solomon R. Guggenheim (bankers and industrialists; also there is Wm. Guggenheim, apparently a black sheep who travelled a lot), John R. Dos Passos (leaving a trail of books behind him), Henry D. Estabrook (lawyer), Thomas A. Edison, who seems to have wired the celestial bodies together, Chauncey M. Depew (attorney for Vanderbilt's railroad cartel, and from 1899-1911 a US Senator), Spencer Trask (educator), and a quite prescient drawing of Judge Albert B. Fall, who became the 'fall' guy for the Teapot Dome scandal in 1921. He is shown here taking a miner's pick to a thick book of mining law, on behalf of the corporations. [Attributes: First Edition]

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED (To Fellow Novelist Mrs. Humphry Ward with Superb Literary Content)

Dorchester, 1905. Hardy, Thomas. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, 4pp, 8vo, on headed stationery of Max Gate, Dorchester, 24 March 1905. Superb literary letter to fellow author Mrs. Humphry Ward (1851-1920), analyzing and praising her recent novel The Marriage of William Ashe (1905). Hardy extensively discusses Ward’s characters, her writing style, and his personal feelings toward her book: "The novel has given me so much pleasure that I am quite unable to write critically about it as I suppose fellow scribblers ought in wisdom to do with one another’s books [...] The part of the book that laid hold of me most tightly was the middle third, the culmination & catastrophe. [...] You have exhibited unexpected dramatic powers. Part Two: Ch XII might be almost bodily transferred to the stage [...] Kitty has, I think, more of my sympathy than you wished her to have. I know somebody like her & so do you..." In Near Fine condition. From the Frederick B. Adams sale, Sotheby’s London 7 November 2001 (lot 524). Printed in the Collected Letters, III, p. 163. . Signed.         Semmelweis' Gesammelte Werke. Herausgegeben und zum Theil aus dem Ungarischen übersetzt von Tiberius von Györy

Jena: Gustav Fischer, 1905 - Collected writings of Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis (1818-1865), one of the great figures of nineteenth century medicine: "His discovery concerning the etiology and prevention of puerperal fever was a brilliant example of fact-finding, meaningful statistical analysis, and keen inductive reasoning. The highly successful prophylactic hand washings made him a pioneer in antisepsis during the pre-bacteriological era in spite of deliberate opposition and uninformed resistance" (DSB). After publication of his landmark work, "Die Aetiologie, der Begriff und die Prophylaxis des Kindbettfiebers" (1861), Semmelweis was ruthlessly attacked by the leading figures in gynaecology. Embittered, Semmelweis died in 1865. It was Pasteur's work that subsequently provided a satisfactory explanation for Semmelweis' empirically based prophylaxis. "An annotated edition, reprinting the texts of Semmelweis's work on puerperal fever as aseptysemia (no. 6275) and on the etiology of puerperal sepsis (no. 6277) as well as other gynaecological papers and articles on Semmelweis by Hebra and Skoda, among others" (Garrison & Morton).       32 originale tuschtegninger + en farvelagt omslagsillustration Blichers udvalgte noveller udsendt af Chr.

        The Four Just Men

London: Tallis Press,, 1905. Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine and upper board in black. Bookseller's blind stamp to front free endpaper. Cloth very slightly rubbed at the tips, some spotting to endpapers and early leaves and occasional small spots to margins of contents thereafter, as often. A lovely, bright copy in excellent condition with the competition slip intact. First edition, first impression. This famous piece of detective fiction is notable for being an early example of interactive media, as the identity of the murderer was withheld pending the result of the competition between readers to solve the mystery. Cash prizes were on offer totalling the huge sum of £500. By some accounts the mystery was no such thing and the publishers were inundated with correct entries and disappointed customers. A particularly beautiful copy with the mail-in slip intact and still attached to its stub at the back of the book.
