REPORT ON A PLAN FOR SAN FRANCISCO: Presented to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors by the Association for the Improvement of San Francisco

San Francisco: Published by the City, 1905. San Francisco: Published by the City, 1905. First edition. Hardcover. Light scuffing to covers, gilt dulled, else very good. Original red cloth, quarto, [2], 8, 35-211, [1], [7 index] pp. Illustrated with many plates, mostly from photographs, including 18 folding plates of plans, panoramas, birds-eye views, etc.; 3 large folding maps. First Edition. Daniel H. Burnham (1946-1912), American architect and urban planner, designer of New York's Flat-Iron building, Chicago's Masonic Temple building, Washington, D. C.s Union Station, the Merchants Exchange Building on California St. in San Francisco, and overseer of design and construction of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. In 1904, Burnham was commissioned by The Association for the Improvement and Adornment of San Francisco "to direct and execute a practical and comprehensive plan for the improvement and adornment of the city, similar to the plans prepared under his direction for Washington, Cleveland, Chicago and Manila." (from the preface). Burnham proposal was elaborate and far-reaching, intended to be accomplished in steps over a period of 50 years. The plan included designs for playgrounds, parks, streets, boulevards, public grounds, etc. Burnham decried San Francisco's rectilinear street system "laid out at right angles and with little regard for grades and other physical difficulties" and proposed "girdling the city with a boulevard" in emulation of Paris. Burnham's vision was not universally accepted and initial approval unraveled due to the enormous cost and perceived impracticability of implementation. The April, 1906 earthquake and fire, which should have offered an obvious opportunity to proceed, did nothing to further the project. By 1909 the whole thing was abandoned. This copy inscribed by James D. Phelan - former San Francisco mayor (1896-1901), US senator, and President and founding member of The Association for the Improvement and Adornment of San Francisco - on front free endpaper: "L. H. Wiegel, May 1913 from Jas. D. Phelan.

An Eye for an Eye, First Edition. Inscribed by Darrow

1905 - Inscribed by Darrow to a Fellow Criminal Defense Attorney Darrow, Clarence [1857-1938]. An Eye for an Eye. New York: Fox, Duffield & Company, 1905. 213 pp. Original cloth, gilt titles to front board and spine. Some rubbing to extremities, corners and spine ends bumped, a few tiny stains, some fading to sections of boards and spine, rear hinge starting. Author inscription to front endleaf, light toning to text, negligible foxing to a few leaves. * First edition. Darrow's only fictional work, aside from his autobiographical novel, Farmington, published in 1904. It tells the story of Jim Jackson, who struggles with poverty and harsh circumstances, before finally murdering his wife in a fit of rage. Faced with the gallows, Jackson confesses: "If ther'd been forty scaffolds right before my eyes, I'd have brought down the poker just the same." Darrow's novel is a sociological polemic which foreshadows such later works as Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy and Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Abe Ravitz, in his Clarence Darrow and the American Literary Tradition, observed that An Eye for an Eye was worthy of a trophy not only for sociological veracity but also for genuine literary achievement. This copy was inscribed "with the regards of his friend and admirer" to James K. Jones, a lawyer in Washington, DC, who often served in criminal cases. The University of Minnesota owns the letter in which he acknowledges receipt of Darrow's book. Jones praises it as "a vivid and truthful picture.of much that comes along in many a poor devil's life. [It] turns light on places where light was needed." Hunsberger, Clarence Darrow: A Bibliography 55. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
