        Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie.

Deuticke, Leipzig 1905 - 8vo. [ii], 83, [1] pp. Original printed wrappers preserved in a clamshell box. An excellent copy with the back strip redone. First edition of the work which Freud himself considered second in importance only to his Die Traumdeutung. Freud introduces here his epochal theory of infantile sexuality, which linked the forces motivating the development of body and mind from earliest infancy, a contribution of utmost value. Infantile sexuality was a fact known, Freud said, to every nursemaid, yet the Three essays provoked (and still provokes) considerable controversy in both scientific and popular sectors. The importance of the Three essays to Freud is underscored by the fact that it was the only book besides The interpretation of dreams that he submitted to constant revision, with six editions published in his lifetime.         Papeles de Nueva España

Establecimiento tipografia and Vargas Rea, Madrid and Mexico City 1905 - 37 volumes. 6 volumes bound in red cloth with original wrappers bound in, the other volumes bound in wrappers. Various sizes from Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 7") to octavo (8" x 6") From the library of George M Foster. Handbook of Middle American Indians, volume 13. 1st edition Modern scholarship continues to be deeply indebted to the labors of Francisco del Paso y Troncoso, less for any extended completed studies or synthesis than for a lifetime of collecting historical materials of the greatest importance to continuing investigation. His activities in Europe during the 23 years he spent searching out, copying and preparing for publication a vast store of prime documentary materials for the pre-Conquest and colonial history of Mexico have been abundantly documented. Paso y Troncoso saw his prime mission as twofold. First, he proposed to gather and publish as complete a corpus of Sahagun documents as possible. His interest in the great Franciscan had stemmed from the days when Paso y Troncoso as a young man had helped Joaquin Garcia Icazbalceta prepare the latter's Bibliografia mexicana del siglo XVI. Second, he expected to copy documentary source materials related to colonial Mexico, an elaborate group of varied papers which he generically called "Papeles de Nueva Espana." In a letter from Madrid, Paso y Troncoso outlined to the Secretary of Public Instruction his views and plans for the "Papeles de Nueva Espana". He mentioned that for various reasons the material had he had compiled for publication under that general title should be divided into series, each according to the class of data it contained. Each series would begin with a volume 1, and subsequent volumes would include similar documents, rather than being only a single series with diverse materials. Various circumstances frustrated Paso y Troncoso's dream of putting numerous volumes of several series each of the PNE into print. He published four relatively complete volumes, and two partial volumes, of Series 2. "Geography and Statistics." Complete were volumes 1, 4, 5, 6 and partially complete were volumes 3 and 7 (all included in these volumes). At Paso y Troncoso's death various works were in the printing houses of Spain. Most of these volumes seem to have been lost or dispersed. Only volume 1 of series was published, Salazar's Cronica de Nueva Espana (lacking in these volumes, but offered separately by the Hispanic Society). Several later hands have dipped into the mass of material Paso y Troncoso compiled for PNE and have utilized his transcripts or copies for publication. Series 1, "Bibliographies," was respectably issued in four volumes under the general title Indices de documentos de Nueva Espana existentes en el Archivo de Indias de Sevilla, 1928-1933 lacking in these volumes. The unpublished portions of Series 2, volume 2 "Geography and Statistics," have appeared under the imprint of Luis Vargas Rea included in these volumes. Vargas Rea in his supplement to Series 2, volume 3, in 7 parts included in these volumes did not complete the reports on the archdiocese of Mexico. From 1944 through 1946, Vargas Rea published most of the hitherto unpublished materials Paso y Troncoso had compiled for volume 7, Relationes geograficas from Michoacan. Six of the eight parts are included in these volumes. In 1948 Volume 9 of PNE, Series 2, appeared under the Vargas Rea imprint in seven small volumes included in these volumes It reproduced what Paso y Troncoso had considered to be the second part of the Memoriales of Bishop Alonso Mota y Escobar, a portion dealing with Nueva Galicia from a manuscript he had found in the British Museum. The whole of the Vargas Rea publications were numbered limited edition prints usually not exceeding 150 and often not more than 100 copies. Thus making the entire printing of Paso y Troncoso vary scarce.         Leçons de mécanique céleste professées a la Sorbonne [Tome I, Tome II, Tome III] (Lessons of Celestial Mechanics)

Gauthier-Villars, Paris 1905 - Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1905-1910. First Edition. 3 volumes in 4, vi, 365, [3]; [4], 165, [3]; [4], 136, [2], + 2 ad.; [4], 472. Illustrated with text figures and two folding world maps in Vol. III. 10x6½, original grey printed wrappers. First edition of a work fundamental to celestial mechanics. Poincaré was one of the greatest mathematical minds of the 19th century; his work on the "three-body problem" (the gravitational interplay of three masses) leads some to credit him as a co-discoverer of the special theory of relativity, along with Einstein and Lorentz. The present is one of two of Poincaré's major works on the subject. With the inkstamp of Paul Berg. Scarce, no copies appear in ABPC for the past 20 years. Some light wear and staining/darkening to spines, back wrapper of Vol. III chipped at edges, minor splitting at joints, but overall very good or better with clean pages partially unopened.         THE FLOWER BOOK Signed

Henri Piazza et Cie. for the Fine Art Society, London 1905 - Landmark Pre-Raphaelite Masterpiece Of The Book Arts. First edition in the ORIGINAL unbound state. One of a very small limitation of Three Hundred Numbered in Longhand Copies [by Georgiana Burne-Jones]. Publisher's leather & cloth clamshell case. Folio (13 X 17 1/2 inches). This production consists of the famous thirty eight original water-colour designs by Burne-Jones brilliantly reproduced by the publisher. The plates are housed in the original publisher's gilt-lettered clamshell case 1/4 dark green Morocco with matching cloth refreshed by expert modest repair. As originally intended by the publisher, the introductory quarto gilt-lettered booklet bound in green cloth is present as a separate publication with the title-page, half-title, text and index printed in red & green, except for the four-page document "Facsimile of Part of the Lists of Flowers Made by Sir Edward Burne-Jones" at the back, printed in black as required. Of the 38 original loose colour plates mounted separately with facing text in their original window mattes, 35 are present with three missing plates masterfully crafted & supplied in facsimile by an expert paper conservationist matching paper stock quality, matting, colour quality & the original hand-lettered typography - no expense was spared to faithfully complete & perfect this famous presentation. Very few copies of this important example of "fin de siècle livre d'artiste" have survived in any condition at all. If any surface, they are usually bound-up as a book in the traditional fashion. Copies with the plates loose as issued are very rare [perhaps fewer than 20 copies]. "The pictures in this book are not of flowers themselves, but of subjects suggested by their names. The first meaning of many of these has long been forgotten, and new meanings are here found for them in the imagination of the artist". He began the series for his own pleasure in 1882, as rest from more laborious work, keeping by him a list of beautiful names that he had met with & choosing subjects amongst them from time to time according to his mood. All the pictures take the same form, a circle about six inches in diameter kind of magic mirror in which the vision appears and he wished them not to be separated, because, wide as is their scope, one spirit, that of pure fantasy, unites them. Many of the paintings draw on Arthurian and classical legend, and on the Bible, and some are re-workings of favourite themes, for example `Wake, Dearest!' depicts `The Sleeping Beauty', a story he turned to again and again in his several `Briar Rose' series. These freely worked little pictures, some of them unfinished, were done purely for the artist's own pleasure and it may be for this reason that they possibly contain `a fuller expression of himself than exists elsewhere in his work'. Georgiana Burne-Jones - From the Preface. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Rip Van Winkle

New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1905. - First American Trade Edition in the Original Box[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. IRVING, Washington. Rip Van Winkle. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1905. First American Trade Edition, variant issue. Quarto (9 13/16 x 7 3/8 inches; 249 x 185.). viii, 57, [1 blank], [2]pp. Color frontispiece and fifty color plates mounted with lettered tissue guards.Publishers green cloth, pictorially stamped in gilt on front cover and lettered in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt. A very fine copy in the original gray cardboard box, pictorially printed in red and black (two box edges renewed). The text for this first American trade edition is identical to the London signed limited edition with the exception of the imprint on page [60] reading "Printed by / Ballantyne & Co. Limited / Tavistock St. London" as opposed to "Printed by / Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. / London & Edinburgh". There are two 'variant' issues of the Doubleday page New York edition. One with the fifty-one plates mounted on stiff green card and the other (this copy) with fifty-one actual plates interspersed throughout the book.Around the middle of 1904. Ernest Brown & Phillips commissioned 50 color illustrations to Rip Van Winkle, and purchased the originals and all rights for 300 guineas. The publishing rights were then resold in a complicated deal to Heinemann, before the illustrations were exhibited at Brown and Phillips' Leicester Galleries. Most of the Rip drawings were sold at the exhibition, and by October they had all found purchasers."Brown and Phillips' investment, made secure by the keenness of Rackham's purchasers, was not let down by the reviews his work received.". When, in September 1905, Rip Van Winkle was published, comparisons between Rackham and German artists [i.e. Dürer and Joseph Sattler] continued to be voiced, The Times remarking on 'the marvel of his Düreresque detail.'". The 51 illustrations, for a story of not more than five thousand words, enables the story to be told twice, once through Irving's words, and once again, image by image, through Rackham's pictures. In his illustrations, Rackham pays homage not only to Dürer, Cruikshank and Dutch seventeenth-century painting, but to contemporary artists, too." (Hamilton).". But the first work that greatly advanced his fame in the years immediately following his marriage was his edition of Rip Van Winkle This lovely book decisively established Rackham as the leading decorative illustrator of the Edwardian period. The deluxe edition of the book was fully subscribed before the [Leicester Galleries] exhibition closed" (Hudson).Latimore and Haskell p. 26. Riall p. 70. Gettings p. 176. Hamilton pp. 68. Hudson pp. 57, 167. Hudson, p. 180 (Rackham bookplate). [Attributes: First Edition]

Signed Pen and Ink Cartoon "Secret Weapon"

1905 - Original pen and ink signed cartoon by the French political cartoonist "Caran D'Ache", whose real name was Emmanuel Poire (1858 - 1909). This cartoon, dated 8 Mai 05, drawn on tissue paper and signed in the lower right panel, is likely from an album. The drawing spoofs a futuristic protective rounded pod for soldiers; the first panel shows them easily transported; the second panel shows the soldiers with the pods snapped around them, protecting them from the swords and spears of African natives; to use as floating fish-like shells to approach ships under their guns and to use as wash basins and cradles after the "war". The "war" Caran D'Ache spoofs appears to be French Colonial Empire building during the later part of the 19th century, a time when France cloaked their acquisitions in Africa as a moral mission to lift the world up "to French standards by bringing Christianity and French culture. In 1884 the leading exponent of colonialism, Jules Ferry declared; "The higher races have a right over the lower races, they have a duty to civilize the inferior races." Full citizenship rights - assimilation - were offered, although in reality "assimilation was always receding [and] the colonial populations treated like subjects not citizens."[Wikipedia]. 22 x 14 1/4". A couple of marginal creases, overall very good condition.Poire was a satirist whose work appeared in Le Chronique Parisienne, Le Figaro, and Le Rire, and who developed "stories without words", considered a precursor to comic strips. In his later years he began a series of "Albums", booklets of cartoons devoted to current fads and social or political issues. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
