California Wild Flowers: 12 Reproductions in Natural Colors from Water Color Drawings. Descriptive text by Charles Francis Saunders

Philadelphia:: Elisabeth Hallowell Saunders,, 1905. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. FIRST EDITION. Narrow folding portfolio, stitched pamphlet, plus 12 loose leaves. 11 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. (12) pp, [12] ff. Text pages bound with a red string, title page printed in red and black, 12 loose color plates; text clean, unmarked, lightly toned and sunned, usage wear. The portfolio consists of heavy brown printed paper, folded twice to form a chemise, printed in red and black; binding square and tight, minor shelf wear, especially along spine crease. SCARCE. Very Good. This portfolio contains 12 reproductions of water-color drawings by Elisabeth Moore Hallowell Saunders. Elisabeth Saunders was born in Alexandria, VA, and lived in Philadelphia and Baltimore, where she married Charles Francis Saunders (1859-1941). Both Elisabeth and Charles were avid naturalists, Charles beginning his publishing career in the 1890s. After a honeymoon in California and the Southwest in 1902, the couple moved to California in 1906 and settled in Pasadena where Charles devoted himself full time to writing. He eventually published more than a dozen books inspired by California and the Southwest. The couple collaborated on a number of publications, Charles as author and Elisabeth as illustrator; the pair were also avid photographers, and many of their photographs were used to illustrate Charles' books, including The Indians of the Terraced Houses (1912) and Under the Sky in California (1913). Elisabeth published two collections of California Wild Flowers - one with a set of six illustrations, and this with a set of 12. The intention was to provide models from which art students could paint California wild flowers if unable to observe the flowers in the field. The set of 12 illustrates California Poppy, Prickly Phlox, Brodiaea, Cream-Cups, Monkey Flower, Owl's Clover, Indian Paint-Brush, Wild Pansy, Mariposa Tulip, Wild Heliotrope, Shooting Star, and Scarlet Bugler. Charles is credited with the descriptive text that accompanies these reproductions. Worldcat records 14 holdings for the suite of 12 illustrations.

(JAPANESE PRINT BOOK -- MEIJA ERA)

, [1905] This unusual text is a middle school textbook for plants, and was created, according to our Japanese linguist, in the 38th year of the reign of Emperor Meija (1852-1912), who ruled from 1867 until his death -- which dates it to 1905. Laid into a small 4to portfolio (paper over heavy card stock with paper label), it is published accordion style, which unfolded measures over 15 feet in length. Very good/very good. The portfolio is age toned, rubbed and lightly soiled and has a restored hinge; the text block itself has small paper loss to the sole text page (expertly restored) and archival strengthening of some of the accordion folds (versos only). Fascinating and lovely, if cryptic, this Japanese production apparently includes some Chinese characters identifying the drawings (which include marijuana) and naming the Japanese artists. A prologue in Japanese identifies it as a middle school text for identifying plants. As our knowledge of the Japanese and Chinese languages is, shall we say, extremely limited -- okay, nonexistent -- our bibliographical details are accordingly scanty. What we do know is that the watercolors are superb renderings accomplished entirely in shades of grey with only a couple of highlights in the palest of pink and green -- stark and simple, with no background. There are striking, delicate closeups of a variety of exotic-looking plants and flowers (one with butterfly hovering nearby) and a single dramatic landscape showing a snow-capped mountain, each of these twelve scenes occupying a two-page (13" X 9½") spread. Each watercolor has a small, round 5/8ths diameter rubberstamp the text of which we have not identified. A beautiful thing that must be seen to be appreciated.

On the conversion of electric oscillations into continuous currents by means of a vacuum valve

London, 1905. <p>The Beginning of Electronics: Original Patent and First Paper </p><p>Fleming, John Ambrose (1849-1945). (1) No. 24,850 . . . Provisional specification. Improvements in instruments for detecting and measuring alternating electric currents. 5pp. Folding plate. [Redhill: H. M. Stationery Office, 1905.] 254 x 186 mm. Disbound. Stitching holes in left margin, library stamp on first leaf. (2) On the conversion of electric oscillations into continuous currents by means of a vacuum valve. In Proceedings of the Royal Society 74 (1905): 476-487. Whole number. 447-518pp. Text diagrams. 223 x 146 mm. Original printed wrappers, spine and margins a little chipped. Outer margins a bit frayed. Ownership stamp (&#147;H. E. Annett&#148;) on the front wrapper. Boxed. Together two items. Very good. </p><p>First Editions On November 16, 1904 Fleming applied for the patent on the vacuum tube (vacuum valve); he filed his complete specification on August 15, 1905. The patent (no. 1 above) also published in 1905, was granted on September 21. Between the date of filing the patent and filing the complete specification Fleming published his paper on the vacuum tube (no. 2 above) in the Proceedings of the Royal Society. As the original printed patent is very rare, this is an exceptional opportunity to acquire both Fleming&#146;s original specification in the patent, and his first published paper on the invention that created the electronic industry. </p><p>Fleming, an electrical engineer and physicist who had worked with Thomas Edison&#146;s company in London, invented the two-electrode vacuum-tube or diode, an event that marks the beginning of the electronics age, enabling the development of radio and an exceptional range of other electronic inventions. Before the invention of the transistor, the vacuum tube was the first switch used in the earliest electronic computers. Using vacuum tubes as switches, the first general-purpose electronic computer, the ENIAC, was able to operate 10,000 times the speed of a human computer. By comparison, the Harvard Mark 1, which used electromechnical relays as switches, computed 100 times the speed of a human computer. Fleming&#146;s invention also paved the way for Lee DeForest and others to perfect the broadcasting of wireless signals. </p><p>Fleming had been aware since 1884 of the so-called &#147;Edison effect&#148; of &#147;unilateral flow of particles from negative to positive electrode, and he repeated some of the experiments, with both direct and alternating currents, beginning in 1889. . . . [In 1904] he returned to his experiments on the Edison effect, with a view to producing a rectifier that would replace the inadequate detectors then used in radiotelegraphy. He named the resulting device a &#145;thermionic valve,&#146; for which he obtained a patent in 1904 [sic]. This was the first electron tube, the diode, ancestor of the triode and the other multielectrode tubes which have played such an important role in both telecommunications and scientific instrumentation&#148; (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).         Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques & Discoveries

1903 -, Glasgow 1905 - 12 volumes, octavo, illustrated throughout with maps (many folding), proof impressions of the plates; a few scuffs but an excellent set in the original quarter parchment gilt over blue cloth boards, top edges gilt others uncut. Classic English collection of voyages. A fine set of the famous Maclehose edition of Hakluyt. This handsome production reprints the second and best edition of Hakluyt's magnum opus, a classic of travel literature, the first English collection of voyages, and one of the gems of Elizabethan letters. Hakluyt himself was the first lecturer on modern geography and one of the leading spirits of Elizabethan maritime expansion (PMM). The work is devoted to American discoveries and the British colonisation of America, and although published a few years before the Dutch voyage of the Duyfken to the west coast of Cape York in 1605, it is significant that by the time of the revised second edition, Hakluyt was able to include the first tentative forays of the English into the South Seas, whether round Cape Horn or through the Straits of Magellan. As a result, Hakluyt's book represents the pinnacle of Elizabethan geography, but is also among the earliest published works on British expansion into the Pacific. The final part, originally published in 1600, includes most of the New World material, not only cataloguing many of the early American discoveries, but also representing the cusp of early voyages into the Pacific, notably in the section entitled "A Catalogue of divers English voyages, some intended and some performed to the Streights of Magellan, the South Sea? to the headland of California, and to the Northwest?". Printed here are not only reports of the voyages of Drake and several of his compatriots, there is an early account of the important 1586 voyage of Thomas Cavendish, and discussions of major voyages which were destined for the South Seas but failed to round Cape Horn, including those of Edward Fenton (intended for China), Robert Withrington, and the failed 1591 second voyage of Cavendish. The Maclehose edition is considered the finest modern edition of Hakluyt. It was published as the first twelve numbers of the "Extra Series" of the Hakluyt Society. This is the deluxe issue, from an edition of 100 copies, without the limitation leaf (apparently so issued). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

THE WINNING OF THE WEST was Roosevelt&#39;s literary masterpiece. The book was immensely successful, with the first edition disappearing in little more than a month. A pencil note by the owner in the first volume indicates that the books were purchased on the day of Roosevelt&#39;s death: 6 January 1919.

Fads and Fancies of Representative Americans at the Beginning of the 20th Century: Being a Portrayal of their Tastes, Diversions and Achievements

New York: Town Topics Publishing Company, 1905.. New York: Town Topics Publishing Company, 1905. First edition. Folio, original full green morocco, elaborate tooling to the spine, front and back panels, green silk doublures and endleaves. All edges gilt. Number 51, signed by William Mann, the publisher of Town Topics. In near fine condition. William d&#39;Alton Mann was a businessman and newspaper and magazine publisher during the civil war. He developed the Mann Boudoir Car, a railroad sleeping car, and published the Mobile Register, The Smart Set, and Town Topics. Mann came to be known for his dubious practices. For example, he created the "blind item," a gossipy news story in which the details of a private happening are reported while the identities of the people involved are not revealed. Mann used this as blackmail to publicly threaten an individual into doing his will, lest Mann chooses to expose him.

JAPANESE PRINT BOOK -- MEIJA ERA).

[1905] 1905 - This unusual text is a middle school textbook for plants, and was created, according to our Japanese linguist, in the 38th year of the reign of Emperor Meija (1852-1912), who ruled from 1867 until his death -- which dates it to 1905. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

3rd Battalion The Worcestershire Regt. 1905 - Mandora Barracks, Aldershot - fine presentation photograph album.

Aldershot: Gale & Polden, 1905 - Landscape folio (264 × 334 mm) Dark green morocco over bevelled boards by Gale & Polden, four double bands to the spine, title as above gilt to the upper board, three white buckram on-lay flashes at the top inner, and lower fore-corner of the upper board, together with a large central on-laud white linen escutcheon with the regimental crest, gilt, all edges gilt, reeded roll in blind to the turn-ins, white moiré effect endpapers A little sunned on the spine and upper board, light rubbing, some foxing on the mounts, minor marginal oxidation to the first image - The Officer's Mess - but otherwise all the images clean and sharp, otherwise very good. 16 large format original photographs (200 × 284 mm) mounted on linen-hinged heavy card leaves, calligraphically captioned in an elegant art nouveau script. An exceptionally handsomely-presented album produced for Lt.-Col. E.A. D'Arcy Thomas on leaving command of the battalion. Inscribed verso of the front free endpaper; "To Colonel E.A. D'A. Thomas from his Adjutant A.S. Nesbitt (April 1904 to April 1907)." Fine selection of well-captioned group portraits - the officers in dress, and in service uniform, but also in mufti, seated with no regard to rank, Thomas being at the end of the front, seated, row - sergeants, corporals, band, drums &c; also the cricket XI, "Winners Aldershot Army Corps Competition, 1905, Captain Lt. Col. D'Arcy Thomas"; three shooting teams, the Battalion Shooting Eight, "Winners Queen Victoria Cup for the 3rd Year in succession", the Officers Shooting Team, "Winner Officers Challenge Cup", and H Company, the Evelyn Wood Team, winners of the Evelyn Wood Competition - a marching and shooting challenge designed to text musketry under "attack" conditions; a march past at a review for King Alphonso XIII of Spain; the Machine Gun Team; the colours and the officers' mess. A previous owner has loosely inserted detailed notes on the subsequent careers of the officers of the battalion, also a clipped article on D'Arcy Thomas from the regimental magazine, published 1950, titled "A Beloved Martinet". In it it is explained how this "most forceful, generous and loveable character" took over the battalion in Tipperary in 1903 when it was "a very young one with hundreds of recruits who had never fired a rifle and was determined to get them trained to the very high standard which he always set". Bringing in Lt.-Col. Whitty, pictured four times in officer and shooting team groups, "who combined to a remarkable degree a record as a marksman second to none with an outstanding 'flair' as a coach" making the battalion "undoubtedly the best shooting battalion in the British Army at that period." A nicely provenanced album, superbly bound and with some genuinely unusual, and well-composed images.
