        THE FANCY.

      - With a Prefatory Memoir and Notes by John Masefield and thirteen illustrations by Jack B. Yeats. Pp. [ii]+30+xxiv+88, frontispiece and 12 text or headpiece illustrations, the title page printed in red & black, glossary; f'cap. 8vo; printed grey paper wrappers with bevelled fore-edges, the backstrip slightly discoloured, edges a trifle rubbed and creased; fore and bottom edges uncut; upper hinge tender, a little light foxing; Elkin Matthews, London, 1905. First edition thus, first issue? (published at half-a-crown - the more common Satchel Series issue appearing in the same year at the increased price of one shilling). *From the library of Australian bibliophile Claude Prance, with his small book label above his pencilled signature on verso of upper wrapper. Originally published in 1820 under the pseudonym of Peter Corcoran (a famous boxer of the 1770s). John Hamilton Reynolds (1796-1852) is today best remembered as a close friend of Keats. His first volume of verse was published in 1814, and he initially devoted most of his time to literature and sport, but from about 1818 onwards (particularly after the death of Keats in 1820) he became more committed to his legal career. John Masefield, in his Introduction to this edition, notes that The Fancy was written shortly before Reynolds' marriage, and suggests that it can be viewed as 'his final parting with his youth, his poetry, and the forbidden delights of youth. Instead of going with his friends to talk art, or to watch boxing, he was to sit at home and play cribbage'. The glossary at the end of this volume is of sporting (and drinking) slang of the period, and defines The Fancy as 'Life preserved in spirit'.

Album with Forty-nine Original Photographs from a Voyage to Palermo and Naples, with Four Original Watercolours made during the Trip, and Numerous Ephemera, Including Dinner Menus, Advertising Leaflets, and Twenty-five Colour and Black and White Printed Postcards].

1905 - 1905. Quarto (ca. 25x19,5 cm). 49 gelatin silver prints mounted on 30 stiff card leaves, including two large ones ca. 11,5x15,5 cm (4 ½ x 6 in); and the rest ca. 6x10 cm (2 ¼ x 4 in) or slightly smaller. With four original watercolours, including two larger ones, ca. 14x23 cm (5 ½ x 9 in), and two smaller ones, ca. 14x9 cm (5 ½ x 3 ½ in). With seven colour printed dinner menus of various sizes, two printed advertising leaflets, nine colour and fourteen black and white printed postcards. The majority of the images and printed materials are with period manuscript ink captions on the mounts. Period black half sheep album by "John J. Banks & Son" with cloth boards. Owner's gilt stamp on the front board "H.C.F. 1905". Album mildly rubbed and loosened at hinges, but overall a very good copy with a bright and interesting ephemera collection. Beautiful keepsake album from the 1905 cruise of a group of English tourists along the Mediterranean coast of the southern Italy. The travelling party left London on the January 13th on board RMS "Orizaba" of the Orient Pacific Line and proceeded to Naples via Plymouth and Marseilles. They spent over a month in Palermo and afterwards visited Pompeii and a famous Flavian Amphitheater in Pozzuoli, before leaving from Naples on board SS "Ormuz" in the end of March. Most likely the album was compiled by "Miss H. Fawkes": her name appears in the official printed list of passengers of RMS "Orizaba" mounted at the beginning of the album, and these initials coincide with the owner's gilt stamp on the front cover of the album. The majority of photographs show Palermo including its narrow streets and courtyards with laundry hanging out of the windows, old harbour with fishing boats, local shepherds and vegetable sellers. Several photos show views of the monastery of Santa Maria di Gesù and cloister of the abbey of Monreale. There are also images taken on a riding tour to Mount Pellegrino on the eastern side of the Bay of Palermo; the creator of the album apparently present on these pictures, together with her sister (?) "Miss V. Fawkes" and "Lady Esther Smith". Among other images are portraits of lively "Nurses in the Villa Nationale, Naples", views of the coast of Corsica and Sardinia, and the harbour of Naples. The ephemera include seven colourful dinner menus finished in manuscript, and two advertising leaflets from RMS "Orizaba" and Italian hotels. Souvenir postcards show RMS "Orizaba", Palermo and costumes of its inhabitants, ruins of Pompeii. Watercolours include views of the harbours of Gibraltar and Naples taken from deck of RMS "Orizaba", and sketches of a boat in Marseille, and a flower from Monte Pellegrino. Overall a very attractive travel keepsake. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, Detective Bureau, Washington, D.C., January 19, 1905. Identification Wanted [...] Gessler Resseau [sic]

N.p. [Washington DC]: Metropolitan Police Dept, 1905. Relic of the briefly celebrated case of Gessler Rosseau, an ultra-patriotic domestic terrorist who, for a period of a few years around the turn of the century, made it his mission to "rid the country...of foreign things." At the time of release of this broadside, Rosseau/Russell was under incarceration in the District of Columbia jail for attempting to dynamite the statue of Frederick the Great at the D.C. Arsenal; under questioning, Rosseau admitted to being behind the plot to sink the steamer "Umbria" at the New York pier in 1903, and also claimed responsibility for a host of other actions (not all of them credible) including the sinking of the White Star Liner "Naronic" in 1893 and supplying explosives to both Cuban revolutionaries and Irish nationalists. "Rosseau" (apparently a misspeling of "Rousseau") was a pseudonym; the subject's identity appears never to have been conclusively established, though several contemporary accounts identified him as Gessner Russell, a one time Cape Nome gold miner and demolition expert. A police psychiatric profile, published in a March, 1905 New York Times article, described Rosseau thus: "...while by nature tender and averse to violence, and always insisting that it was never his intention to harm or take human life...Russell has developed his Anglophobia into acute mania and has thus been led to employ the results of a lifelong study of explosives for the purpose of rendering what he terms "object lessons" to the hated race." Broadside. Single sheet, printed recto only; ca. 10.5" x 8" (26cm x 20cm). Old folds and edgewear; minor splitting; faint indication of postal cancellation on verso; complete and Good. Signed in type by Richard Sylvester, Chief of Police.

        ITALIAN VILLAS AND THEIR GARDENS

Tall 8vo, publisher’s original dark forest green cloth decorated and lettered in gilt on the spine, cover design by Decorative Designers with elaborate pictorial decorations after Maxfield Parrish in an all over design, upper cover stamped in gilt and blocked in light green, blue, purple, gilt and rust, showing a villa garden. 270 pp. A beautifully preserved copy, very fresh and bright withal, the binding very clean and the gilt and cloth colour in excellent condition, corners sharp and interior clean and tight. An as pristine copy of this beautiful book. SCARCE FIRST EDITION, AND A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THE 1905 ISSUE OF THIS HIGHLY REGARDED AND SOUGHT AFTER WORK. One of the most well-written books on Italian garden design. The combination of Wharton’s liquid descriptions and Parrish’s romantic paintings, makes for an extremely delightful book. Special attention is given to the gardens found at Florentine, Sienese and Roman villas. The relationship of the buildings to the natural surroundings is explored in detail. "The Italian garden does not exist for its flowers; its flowers exist for it: they are a late and infrequent adjunct to its beauties, a parenthetical grace counting only as one more touch in the general effect of enchantment. This is no doubt partly explained by the difficulty of cultivating any but spring flowers in so hot and dry a climate, and the result has been a wonderful development of the more permanent effects to be obtained from the three other factors in garden-composition - marble, water and perennial verdure - and the achievement, by their skillful blending, of a charm independent of the seasons." The format and decorative binding and illustration are the same as in the first issue. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Las Guerras con las Tribus Yaqui y Mayo del Estado de Sonora

Tipografia del Departamento de Estado Mayor, Mexico City 1905 - 342+ix with fold out map. Large Quarto (13" x 8 1/4") issued in original wrappers. First edition. There is an abundance of documentation concerning the history of indigenous populations of Mexico prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. These documents were constructed from information about the groups with whom the Spaniards had the most contact and focus on the life and governance of these groups. In comparison, relatively little is known of the hunters and gatherers that for most of the colonial period occupied a marginal position relative to the central political scheme. These peoples, located in the arid part of America, were relegated to colonization by religious missionary orders. The Spanish colonization machine with its array of bureaucrats and administrators was first established in the Mesoamerican region because of its geo-political importance as a central area for decision-making and development of the colonial society. What is commonly known as the Aztec Empire consisted of 38 provinces which paid tribute, and the Empire was, in reality, a rather loose confederation of city-states with different political systems and situations. This confederation of city-states encompassed many different ethnic groups and a diverse array of languages. The cities in the central region consisted of primarily Nahuatl and Otomi speaking populations. To the northeast were the Huastecos, Totonacas, and Mazatecos. To the southeast the Mixtecos, Zapotecos. To the south the Mayas. To the southeast the Tlapanecas and Cuitlatecas. To the west the Mazahuas and the Matlazincas. The consolidation of this confederation of cities and settlements by the Mexicans who exercised their hegemony over these varied peoples, created a class of leaders of which the Tlatoani or Supreme Lord, warriors, and functionaries were a part; a class of businessmen and traders, the pochtecas, who, at the time of the colonization, were beginning to enjoy increasing importance and privilege. The campesinos (or countrymen), whether Nahuatl, Zapotec, or Mixtec, continued their life at the margin of these city-states in their apogee. The campesinos or macehualtzin were all members of a community, with usufruct rights to the land where they established their home and an agricultural plot. The territorial space was called the calpulli or what we now know as indigenous communal area or settlement. This calpulli was characterized by a sociopolitical organization based on a definition of territory, barrio or sometimes kinship. The Spanish colonization produced a phenomenon that on one hand tended to blur the cultural differences of the ethnic groups, while on the other contributing to the persistence of the same groups. These managed to retain their own identities yet with a colonial overlay that gave them an identity imposed by the colonizer (religious, or subjects to the king, mine of hacienda workers. etc.). With independence the indigenous peoples acquired the same liberties and rights as other segments of the population. Nevertheless, in many cases they were still subject to special laws and rules that kept them in a marginal and inferior situation relative to the white mestizo population. With the expansion of the agricultural and livestock frontier, and the development of capitalist relations of production in the field (salaried labor, production of commercial crops, capital investments in agrarian property, and the growth of infrastructure in the rural areas) the indigenous populations suffered a massive despoiling and appropriation of their territories, and many of them were exiled or resettled in less hospitable areas. This was the origin of the emergence of the great latifundios and haciendas, that established themselves in the territories belonging to the indigenous people and in which the indigenous populations were incorporated in systems of servants or clientage (peones acacillados). The exploitation of indigenous labor and the takeover of their lands generated c [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        A Colorado Outing

Smith-Brooks Press, Denver, CO 1905 - Gilt-stamped maroon leather, 12mo; 23pp; illustrated with title page photo, decorative initials and 5 text drawings. "This is the story of a hunting, fishing and prospecting trip in the summer of 1871 from a camp on the North Saint Vrain River near Long's Peak, Colorado. It is an exciting story and well told"-Thomas Streeter. This was one of the few sporting titles in the Streeter collection (#4127). There seems to be some uncertainty about the author's name. Streeter refers to Joseph A. Addison and the OCLC lists Joseph A[ddison] Thatcher as the author in the 8 copies they note. The printed initials, J.A.T., appear under the title on page one. A rather uncommon book and missed by Phillips, Wetzel, Bruns, Riling and Heller in their bibliographies. This copy is in very good condition with a small quarter inch chip to the crown of the spine and light wear to the extremities. The hinges are lightly cracked but still very tight. Also, this copy is inscribed and dated in year of publication and initialed , rather illegibly, by either "J.A.A." or "J.A.T." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Collected Works

Foyers, The Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth,, 1905–7. 3 volumes in 1, octavo. Original limp white buckram, titles to upper board gilt, top edge gilt others uncut. Printed on India paper. Some spotting to endleaves, cloth rather grubby. Very good. First Edition, Sole Printing. With the ownership inscription of one Raymond Radclyffe on the front free endpaper, underneath which is Crowley's later signed presentation inscription, "I am sad, for he [Radclyffe] was one of the very best that ever lived; a City Editor straight as Euclid before Einstein attacked him, and one of the best literary critics and friends in the world. But now I am glad, for Collin Brooks to whom I give this copy (which is not mine to give) has restored me to that 'too much love of living' which I thought I had packed. Aleister Crowley 26-5-42 EV". A spectacular piece of early Crowley egomania. Radclyffe was a journalist and editor of whom Crowley wrote, "Raymond Radclyffe, who, though utterly indifferent to Magick, was passionately fond of poetry and thought mine first-class, and unrivaled in my generation"!
