Andante funebre e doloroso ma con moto. Third movement from Tchaikovsky's String Quartet no. 3, op. 30, arranged for string orchestra by Glazunov. [Score]. Autograph musical manuscript signed "A. Glazunov"

May 22, 1905. Folio (350 x 267 mm.). 12 pp. Notated in black ink on printed 16-staff paper "No. 17. (I)" issued by P. Jurgenson, Moscow. Dated May 22, 1905 on final page of music, in Cyrillic: "22 maia 1905 g. A Glazunov." Fair copy with occasional corrections, possibly in Glazunov's hand, in pencil. Credit to "P. Tschaïkowsky" in Glazunov's hand to upper right corner of first page with "Glazunov" in Cyrillic to left in pencil in an unknown hand. Barlines in pencil from p. 5. Note in ink in an unknown hand to lower right corner of first page: "Andante du Quatuor op. 30 de Tchaïkovsky arr. pour orch. à cordes par Glazounof. Autographe de Glazounof." Engraver's markup indicating a page count from 3 to 13 and one editorial sharp (p. 8) in blue pencil. Plate number "30953" entered in pencil to foot of all pages through p. 9. Signature in pencil in Cyrillic, "Makar," to lower right corner of p. 8 with one word, possibly in the same hand, below second barline of p. 5. Browned throughout; slightly frayed at edges; some minor soiling; small ink stain to p. 6. . An unrecorded autograph of a little-known arrangement. Tchaikovsky dedicated his Third String Quartet to the memory of violinist Ferdinand Laub (1832-1875), his colleague on the faculty of the Moscow conservatory. The slow movement, which Glazunov arranged here, is the funeral music proper. The original is in E-flat minor; Glazunov transposed the movement to E minor, making it easier for string instruments to play. The arrangement was published by Jurgenson in Moscow (PN 30953), also in 1905 (the date in WorldCat, "1896," is an error). Jurgenson's edition is extremely rare: WorldCat lists one copy only, at the Free Library of Philadelphia. Glazunov, director of the St. Petersburg conservatory from 1905 to 1928, was one of Rimsky-Korsakov's most distinguished students. Ironically, like Stravinsky, he received his tuition privately and never attended the institution whose head he would later become. His most famous students were Sergey Prokofiev and Dmitry Shostakovich.

Autograph Letter Signed [to novelist Mrs. Humphry Ward]

1905. [a lengthy literary letter] One leaf folded, on mourning stationery headed "Max Gate, Dorchester." Four pages of text, addressed to "My Dear Mrs Ward," signed "Yours sincerely, Thomas Hardy," and dated 24 March 1905. This long letter is Hardy's response to his receipt, from Mrs. Humphry Ward, of a copy of her new novel THE MARRIAGE OF WILLIAM ASHE (1905). Mary Augusta Ward, née Arnold (1851-1920), was a member of the illustrious Arnold / Huxley family (her uncle was the poet Matthew Arnold, and her sister became the mother of Julian and Aldous Huxley). Mary's 1905 novel that is the subject of this letter (featuring young Kitty Bristol and the dashing Geoffrey Cliffe) went on to become the #1 bestseller of 1905 in America -- beating out, for example, #4 THE CLANSMAN by Thomas Dixon and #9 THE HOUSE OF MIRTH by Edith Wharton; sixteen years later it was also a silent film. Hardy here gives his assessment of the book at length, as follows:~I have just got through the novel, & it has given me so much pleasure that I am quite unable to write critically about it -- as I suppose fellow-scribblers ought in wisdom to do with one another's books. I did not at all expect that there was such a treat in store for me, or I should not have waited to finish some work -- as I did -- before beginning.~The part of the book that laid hold of me most tightly was the middle third -- i.e. if the book had been in 3 vols. the second one. I don't mean to say that I think you fell off in the last third, but that the culmination & catastrophe of a story -- which necessarily admit of fewer varieties than the development, & must always be among a certain limited number -- must to an old reader appear less novel than the earlier parts need do.~You have exhibited unexpected dramatic powers. Part Two: Ch XII might be almost bodily transferred to the stage, & indeed a great deal of that Part throughout.~Kitty has, I think, more of my sympathy than you wished her to have; but I don't know. I know somebody like her, and so do you, and one day I will ask you in an unguarded moment if you had her in mind. Cliffe's views at the top half of p. 438 rather attracted me to him; but in other places I did not see why women should have cared for him. But I am not a woman, & bow my head.~I had forgotten to say till now how much obliged I am to you for giving me the book. With kind regards believe me...~Clearly Hardy has given the author a glowing appraisal of her new book (though he hedges his words about the common-formula ending): did he really like it, or was he repaying a debt from fourteen years earlier? When Hardy's TESS OF THE D'URVERVILLES came out in 1891, it was roundly attacked by just about all literary critics for its scandalous subject matter -- but it was just as enthusiastically applauded by several contemporary authors, notably Henry James, Walter Besant -- and Mrs. Humphry Ward [see Millgate p. 321]. Five years after TESS came Hardy's JUDE THE OBSCURE, which was again attacked -- so much that Hardy declined to write any more fiction for the remaining 32 years of his life.~The letter is in fine condition. Thomas Hardy Collected Letters III p. 163; from the renowned Frederick B. Adams Sale of 2001 (lot 524).

Op. 106]. Portuguesa pour basson et piano Morceau de Concours du Conservatoire national de Musique. Autograph musical manuscript signed

      - With numerous recordings available online, the Portuguesa has become a staple of the conservatory bassoonist's repertoire. Leduc also issued an undated, and probably later, version for bassoon and orchestra, of which only one copy is recorded, at the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek. Worldcat. Not in Grove Music Online."Firmly rooted in the French 19th-century tradition, Büsser’s symphonic and choral writing is indebted to Gounod and Saint-Saëns. He is best known, however, for his dramatic works, which betray Wagner's impact in both their form and their use of the orchestra. The influence of Debussy, whose advice Büsser sought over the opera that became his most successful, Colomba (c1902–10), is also evident in certain harmonic procedures and in an acute sensitivity to orchestral colour. The ballets, such as the light-hearted La ronde des saisons (1905) with its amusing descriptive touches, provide further evidence of his keen dramatic sense." Barbara L. Kelly in Grove Music Online. Folio (ca. 360 x 280 mm). [i] (title), 15 pp. Notated in black ink on music paper with 16 printed staves per page. The engraver's copy, prepared for the publishing house Alphonse Leduc. Busser" and dated Paris, April 15, [19]39. Dedicated to Gustave Dhérin, noted professor of bassoon at the Paris Conservatory. With autograph annotation "Même édition que La Chasse de St. Hubert" to lower portion of title and occasional erasures and corrections in black ink in the composer's hand. Lower edge of first page with publisher's red handstamp, manuscript date "[193]9" and plate number ("A.L. 19882") in an early hand in maroon ink. Handstamps of the Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs & Éditeurs de Musique, dated May 19, 1939, to first and last pages. Numerous editorial markings and minor annotations in one or more early hands in pencil and red crayon.Slightly browned; two outer leaves and second bifolium detached, with several minor tears not affecting music; lower portion of pp. 3 and 4 with slight washing of ink, minimally affecting 1 "f" dynamic marking.         Le Pot Au Feu : Journal de cuisine pratique et d'économie domestique

Paris: Saint-Ange Ébrard, 1905. Twelve quarto volumes, 25.5 x 20 cm, page counts vary. Illustrated throughout. Text in French. The first thirteen years of the cooking magazine Le Pot-Au-Feu bound in twelve volumes (1893 and 1894 bound together). The fortnightly periodical was published from 1893-1940; a successor adopted the name for a shorter-lived run from 1949 to 1956. The magazine grew out of a series of lectures on domestic cookery given by the famed chef Charles Driessen, a prominent member of the Escoffier circle and chef to the King of Italy. Concerned with "practical" cookery and geared towards housewives of all social standings, the recipes and menus clearly reflect a cuisine bourgeoise. The publisher's wife contributed under the pseudonym "La Vieille Catherine" and in 1927 many recipes featured in the magazine were collected into La Bonne Cuisine de Madame E. Saint-Ange, a cookbook later revered by Julia Child, Anne Willan, and others. An atypical women's magazine in that it focuses solely on cookery and its contributors are primarily professional male chefs. Other contributors include Nobel Prize winning chemist Henri Moissan, journalist Emile Gautier, agronomist and naturalist Jean Dybowski, and statesman and philosopher Jules Simon. Table of contents featured at the end of each year, but lacking for 1896. Each magazine is bound without wrappers, except for the initial issue of each volume (January 1); 1893-1894 volume begins with the cover for September 15, 1893, though the first issue is April 15, 1893. In handsome dark blue quarter-leather with marbled boards and endpapers. All volumes with original silk ribbons. Some rubbing and edgewear with slight foxing throughout, otherwise fine.

Victory, commemorating the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar and Nelson's death: ""Centenary Memento Oct. 21st 1905. Containing copper from HMS Victory from Lords of the Admiralty to British & Foreign Sailor's Society."" Like the copper, the oak is believed to have been recovered from the H.M.S. Victory. Light wear and a hint of oxidation.Following the battle of Trafalgar, the H.M.S. Victory was badly damaged and could not return under the power of its own sail. After delivering Nelson's body to London, the Victory was repaired and remained in active service until 1812, when she was moored at Portsmouth. The ship served as a training ship for some time, but by the turn of the 20th century, it had deteriorated so badly that in 1910, a group of enthusiasts established the Society for Nautical Research to help with funds. Restoration of the ship was finally completed well after the close of the Second World War, the last repairs not completed until 2005, just in time for the bicentennial of Trafalgar. Today, it is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and attracts over 350,000 visitors as a museum ship. To help fund its restoration efforts, the Society for Nautical Research took unusable parts, including nails and copper sheathing, and melted them down to be refashioned as souvenirs.Provenance: Society for Nautical Research; obtained by the War Museum from a prominent British naval family collection, which had additionally featured relics from the noted Benjamin Hill Collection?"that holding included one of the largest swatches of Nelson's ensign that flew at Trafalgar in private hands. Some of these relics were featured in a recently-published peer-reviewed article, a copy of which has been included for reference."

Hong Kong.: Sternberg.. no date. (circa1910).. 64 postcard sized leaves each with black and white collotype views of Hong Kong, original wrappers, black and white view of Hong Kong on which is printed a verse in pidgin English laid down upper cover.         [Text in Cyrillic] Vpered [Forward]. Complete run of 18 issues [BOUND WITH] Proletarii [The Proletariat]. Complete run of 26 issues

Zheneva: Rossiyskayah Sochial Demokraticheskaya Rabochaya Partiya, 1905. First Edition. Full run of Lenin's (irregularly) weekly political newspaper Vpered (January-May, 1905), bound with its successor Proletarii (May-November, 1905), both published by the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in Geneva in 1905. Printed in the same format as Lenin's former news outlet, Iskra, which began publication in 1900 in Leipzig and Munich (and later Geneva), from where it was illegally smuggled into Russia. Lenin left the editorial staff in 1904 after the paper fell into the hands of the opposing faction with the Party, the Mensheviks. He went on to found Vpered as a continuation of the still-extant Iskra, albeit returning to the original Bolshevik platform. Consequently, all three newspapers are near-identical in format, the latter two, however, with the statement at the upper right-hand corner: "Proletarii Vsekh' Stran' Soedinyaytes!" ("All the Proletarians of the Country Unite!"). Of the authors who contributed to these two publications, possibly the most prominent was Maxim Gorky, the founder of Socialist realism and a close associate of Lenin. 44 tabloid-format issues (44cm.) bound together in slightly later marbled boards backed with black cloth, private rubber-stamped library labels to upper cover and spine foot; text printed in triple column. At head of title of Vpered: "En Avant"; at head of title of Proletarii: "Le Proletaire." Boards rubbed, all else Very Good and sound despite fragile (thought not brittle) paper stock. Old, faint rubberstamp of the "Archiv Bunda" throughout.
