With the Pilgrims to Mecca. The Great Pilgrimage of A.H. 1319; A.D. 1902.

London: John Lane,, 1905. With an Introduction by Professor A. Vambery. Octavo. Original green cloth, title gilt to the spine with turban and crossed scimitar devices to compartments, and to the upper board within a panel formed of a Qu'ranic amulet and cord in red, gilt and green, top edge gilt the others uncut. Frontispiece and 19 other plates, errata slip tipped in before the dedication leaf. A little rubbed, corners slightly bumped, head of spine chipped, tail with minor splitting, some spotting on the boards, endpapers lightly browned, text toned and with occasional foxing, as usual, frontispiece coming loose, contemporary ownership inscription to verso of the frontispiece and to title page, bookplate to the front pastedown, remains a very good copy. First edition. An uncommon and attractive account of the hajj. "The early twentieth century saw a growth of British travel texts and religious commentaries concerned with the religion of Arabia. It was in this vein that in 1902 the Morning Post sent is 'Special Correspondent' Hadji Khan, a Persian Sufi, on the hajj to Mecca. His experiences were written up Â… under the guidance of Wilfrid Sparroy. The result was a travelogue that detailed the various components of the hajj and Meccan life for a British readership Â… The narrative is precise and exact as though for an audience who may wish to use the information to find their way amongst the markets of Mecca the next time they visit. Of course few, if any, of the readership will ever visit Mecca Â… an inspection of Arabia which defines that other world by carefully recording the minutiae of Mecca and the hajj, the text providing the British reader with a spyglass scrutiny of Arab religious life and customs Â… a curious concoction of personal experiences of a Muslim on the hajj Â… distilled by an English co-author" (Canton, From Cairo to Baghdad: British Travellers in Arabia, p28).

FIRST EDITION PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY SCOTT TO A MEMBER OF THE DISCOVERY EXPEDITION signed and dated Nov. 1905 on the half title of Volume 1. An IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY of Scott's account of his Antarctic expedition of 1901-1904. Inscribed: "Charles Clarke With the best wishes of the authorities of the Expedition and of the author R.F. Scott Nov. 1905." Originally hired as cook's mate and baker who eventually became the third and final cook of the voyage, Charles Thompson Clark (1876-1952) was the only civilian member of the crew. Clark (spelt without the final 'e' which Scott had mistakenly added in his inscription and in the text) had worked for a miller near Fort William in western Scotland and was asked to deliver a bag of flour to an observatory on Ben Nevis. Captain Robert Scott was there gathering meteorological data for his upcoming expedition to the Antarctic. Impressed by Clark's physical prowess, Scott asked Clark to join his team. Although unaccustomed to adventures, Clark agreed. According to Jason C. Anthony in his book on Antarctic exploration cuisine: "Clark was beloved for his fine bread and what Scott called his "toothsome cakes". .. While Clark was nominally in charge of the galley, he focused on baking and the cooking was 'conducted more or less by a committee of taste' wrote Scott putting the best possible spin on the situation. Volunteers took turns serving as Clark's mate- or taking charge of meals which sometimes failed, sometimes worked admirably but to Scott's relief, were at least 'prepared with a proper regard to cleanliness.'" Clark married four weeks after the Discovery docked in Portsmouth. The fact that he named his first child Charles Falcon Scott Clark and asked Scott to act as godfather attests to Charles Clark's respect and admiration for his former captain. The Spectator referred to Scott's official account of the Discovery expedition as: "the ablest and most interesting record of travel to which the present century has yet given birth". While signed copies of this two volume set occasionally reach the market, signed copies to fellow expedition members are rare.

Autograph letter signed "Humperdinck" to Rainer Simons

      - 4 pp. on one bifolium. Octavo. Dated Venice, June 10, 1905. In black ink. On stationery of the "Hôtel Restaurant Cavalletto Venise Serantoni Barbieri Propriétaires," with imprint in dark blue and with vignettes illustrating the hotel in dark olive green ink. In German (with translation).Humperdinck responds to a letter from Simons, author of the libretto for the opera Das Wunder von Köln [The miracle of Cologne]. Humperdinck had begun setting the libretto, but newspapers then leaked a rumor of the opera, prompting Humperdinck to stop work on the project; Simons's letter has rekindled Humperdinck's interest, and the composer agrees to meet Simons on his way back to Berlin.".Your original proposal appealed to me from the beginning. especially because. [it] allows me to disregard all business obligations and to devote myself to purely artistic, creative work, heedless of baggage, just as it was the case twelve years ago with my Hänsel und Gretel. Back then I did not know yet what agents, publishers, and theater directors were like, let alone the public, which then did not even exist for me, the naïve homo novus. Happy times! In this joyful mood I already had begun to work in spring, when that stupid newspaper note appeared declaring that I composed Das Wunder von Köln. I was showered with inquiries and the like, and the pleasant incognito work I had been looking forward to so much was over. And. in early May. Fräulein Ebeling, the author of my Dornröschen [The sleeping beauty], suddenly died, whereby I. acquired full ownership of the piece, which I had wanted to rework into an opera earlier already. I have to confess that this plan. had kept going through my mind repeatedly during our trip. but equally happily I confess that your letter has changed my mind again. Meanwhile, I want to ask you kindly to think a bit about a new title because the old one, thanks to the newspapers, has become almost loathsome to me. .The title you have chosen. also. evokes associations with ideas that have nothing to do with the piece, with legendary ideas such as the Three Kings [Magi] or Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins. Whether we will come [to you]. by way of Achen Lake or by way of Rosenheim will only depend on whether we will make a detour to the Salzkammergut beforehand."Slightly worn; partially split at folds, with one small repair; small circular file hole to upper blank margin. A highly interesting letter relative to Engelbert Humperdinck's unrealized opera Das Wunder von Köln (The miracle of Cologne) to a libretto by his former student Rainer Simons (1869-1934), founder and first director of the Vienna Volksoper (since 1903). Humperdinck never completed either Das Wunder von Köln or any other opera to a libretto by Simons; it remains unknown how and when the project failed (see the anonymous satire in the semimonthly magazine Der Kunstwart, second issue of November 1905, p. 227).The reference to the Three Kings is actually to their shrine at Cologne Cathedral. Saint Ursula is supposed to have suffered her martyrdom in Cologne.

        Spokane Washington.

Spokane, WA.: John W. Graham & Co.. 1905.. Color wall map, chromolithograph bird's eye view, sheet size 41 1/2 x 61 inches, mounted on linen and attached to wood rods at upper and lower edge. Light toning associated with aging of original protective lacquer coating. Overall very good, bright and clean condition. A visually stunning and detailed bird's eye view of the Spokane area, published by J.W. Graham & Co., a paper and stationery supply store. In 1898 the main commercial area of Spokane had suffered a devastating fire; along with loss of life, there had been hundreds of thousands of dollars of property damage to Spokane, including the total loss of the Graham store, then located in the Great Eastern block (built in 1890 at a cost of $250,000). A mere 7 years later J.W. Graham & Co. trumpeted the resurgence of the Inland Empire, and their business, in this huge bird's eye view image. The legend along the lower edge identifies 74 sites, including two J.W. Graham locations one of which is a warehouse; there is an inset at the upper left edge of the military post Fort Wright. .

Du Bois, Alexander Crummell, and other important luminaries, and was one of the founders of the Niagara Movement. He later became a Socialist and ran for Congress on the Socialist ticket in 1918. An uncommon title, and seldom found signed. .

Some Old French and English Ballads edited by Robert Steele.

London: Eragny Press, 1905. Bound by one of England's greatest women binders. Wood engraved frontispiece in five colours and 19 initial letters in red designed and engraved by Lucien Pissarro. One of 200 copies printed in red and black in Brook and music type on Arches Eragny watermarked paper. 8vo., in a simple and handsome chestnut brown binding by Katherine Adams with her signature in gilt at the rear, spine with raised bands lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, gilt border on the turn-ins, housed in the original foldover box of grey linen. A beautiful copy. An early example of Katherine Adams binding who was a pupil of Sarah Prideaux and worked for a time with Douglas Cockerell, although she was really self taught as this training only lasted for 4 months. She began binding on her own in 1901 receving her first commission from William Morris and bound for the greatest collectors and printers of her day. Her bindings are known for their techincial skill and the excellence of her gilding. Like Lucien Pissarro, Steele was a follower of Morris and had a passionate interest in manuscripts, the history of printing and early printed music. He produced the work in this book as a commission for Lucien. With the label of Philip Duschnes the noted New York dealer.

Nakladem Autora, Warsaw, 1905. Edition Unstated. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. KLOSOWSKI, WALERY. Kobieta i jej wdziecki (Woman and Her Charms), Warsaw: Nakladem Autora, 1905. Quarto, pp. 156, beige cloth boards with gilt lettering and abstract design to front, numerous halftone photos, many tinted, text in Polish. Among a wave of naturist/pictorialist photobooks that were issued around the beginning of the 20th century, this one is in the more explicit German style, as compared with the retouched French efforts. It is a worldwide survey of young women, touching all races, with bits of ethnic costume to signal the subjects' origin. Photo size varies -- three are full-page. This volume is exceeding scarce: OCLC Worldcat locates only one, in the National Library of Poland. Not in Bertolotti's Books of Nudes.         Night Fall in the Ti-Tree

Melbourne: Sign of the Rabbit, 1905. Teague, Violet and Geraldine Rede. Small quarto. (32)pp. Extremely rare first edition. Illustrated with sixteen woodcut illustrations in the Japanese style, six of which are double-page spreads. All but four minor illustrations are hand-initialed in ink by the contributing artist. Set opposite the illustrations, the letterpress-printed verse is a cautionary tale, warning rabbits in their dens to avoid hunter's traps. The atmospheric images, rendered in earth tones, deftly capture both the danger lurking in the night, as well as the peace of a rabbit's simple life. Entirely handmade by Violet Teague and her friend Geraldine Reed in Teague's Melbourne home, Night Fall in the Ti-Tree is the first book in Australia to be produced and illustrated in the Japanese style using colored woodcuts. Teague, who was probably introduced to Japanese prints while studying in England and Europe in the late 1800s, tried to imitate Japanese production techniques as closely as she could. The illustrations were created using water-based inks brushed directly onto the woodblocks, which had been cut along the grain rather than against it, as in Western woodcuts. The binding is also in the Japanese style, with the pages folded at the fore-edge, and stab-sewn through the spine with a green ribbon. Two common techniques in Japanese illustration were also employed to great advantage: asymmetrical illustrations that extend past the edge of the page, and the division of an illustration into two parts for a double-page spread. Taken as a whole, the work is a beautiful and compelling tribute to Japanese style, as well as an important example of Japoniste art in Australia. Teague went on to become a great promoter of Japanese woodblock prints, writing articles and giving demonstrations on technique. Reed published her own book of woodcut illustrations with verse in 1909, titled A Little Book of Trees. Very few copies of this first edition of Night Fall in the Ti-Tree were printed or sold, although it was exhibited several times in Australia following its production, even winning an award at the 1907 First Australian Exhibition of Women's Work. In 1906, it was picked up by English publisher Elkin Mathews for a second edition. Teague re-worked the title page, crediting herself as the author, changing the year on the rabbit logo, and adding Mathews's information under the original imprint. Compared to the 1906 edition, this first 1905 printing has lighter tonal printing to the plates and blacker printing of the text. Original ties replaced with green ribbon, and protected by a custom-made drop-back box. A fine example of a rare item. Together with the 1988 National Gallery of Australia facsimile of the second edition.
