        Rip Van Winkle

1905. ?The First Book Illustrated Wholly by Rackham To be Issued in a Limited Edition? (Riall).[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. IRVING, Washington. Rip Van Winkle. London: William Heinemann, 1905. Deluxe Edition, one of 250 numbered copies signed by Arthur Rackham, this being copy no. 230. Quarto. 57 pp. Color frontispiece and fifty color plates mounted on heavy brown paper with lettered tissue guards, collected at end of text.Publisher's vellum over boards. Front cover pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, later silk ties. A fine copy. Housed in a green cloth clamshell case with red morocco spine label.Around the middle of 1904... Ernest Brown & Phillips commissioned 50 color illustrations to Rip Van Winkle, and purchased the originals and all rights for 300 guineas. The publishing rights were then resold in a complicated deal to Heinemann, before the illustrations were exhibited at Brown and Phillips' Leicester Galleries... Most of the Rip drawings were sold at the exhibition, and by October they had all found purchasers."Brown and Phillips' investment, made secure by the keenness of Rackham's purchasers, was not let down by the reviews his work received."... When, in September 1905, Rip Van Winkle was published, comparisons between Rackham and German artists [i.e. Dürer and Joseph Sattler] continued to be voiced, The Times remarking on 'the marvel of his Düreresque detail.'"... The 51 illustrations, for a story of not more than five thousand words, enables the story to be told twice, once through Irving's words, and once again, image by image, through Rackham's pictures... In his illustrations, Rackham pays homage not only to Dürer, Cruikshank and Dutch seventeenth-century painting, but to contemporary artists, too..." (Hamilton)."... But the first work that greatly advanced his fame in the years immediately following his marriage was his edition of Rip Van Winkle? This lovely book decisively established Rackham as the leading decorative illustrator of the Edwardian period... The deluxe edition of the book was fully subscribed before the [Leicester Galleries] exhibition closed" (Hudson).Latimore and Haskell p. 26. Riall p. 69. Gettings p. 176. Hamilton pp. 68. Hudson pp. 57, 167. Hudson, p. 180 (Rackham bookplate).

With a well executed original water colour to the verso of the fly leaf depicting three fishing boats anchored, with various figures, foilage on the sand bank, several palm trees, a Buddhist temple in the distance, several birds, still brightly coloured. Inman notes in his bibliography Miss Mitton 'a faithful employee of the firm for many years' had her own copy of 'War Impressions' 'unnumbered and marked Editor's Copy', our copy as above is unnumbered but marked 'Engraver's Copy'. The blurb at the bottom of the list of illustrations states G.W. Jones engraved and printed the illustrations. George W Jones (1860-1942) Typographer and Printer, the 'Master of Master Printers'. Jones was imbued with the spirit of innovation and was responsible for producing the first three-colour book in Britain in 1901. As a type designer Jones created Venezia for Stevens Shanks and Granjon, Estienne, Georgian and Baskerville for Linotype, and became printing advisor to Linotype in 1921. Thought by some to be the best all-round printer that Britain has ever produced, and his work stands as a monument to his life. On his trip through Burma and the paintings he left of the country, Kelly had a significant impact on the early 20th century development of Burmese painting. In Burma, he was at the very least a key inspiration of one of the major painters of Burma, M.T. Hla (U Tun Hla) (1874-1946), as well as Maung Maung Gyi (painter) (1890-1942) and Ba Ohn (c.1877-fl.1924) who both show clear influence of Kelly's style in certain works, to the point, in one case, of an exact replica. The latter two painters are likely to have met Kelly and received some instruction from him, but Kelly's two books were widely available in Burma, as were postcard reproductions, which were sold in Burma, of the paintings in his books.

TWO YEARS IN THE ANTARCTIC Being a Narrative of the British National Antarctic Expedition / With Illustrations and a Map

Edward Arnold, London 1905 - Royal 8vo, pp. xix, 315. First edition, first state, With 16 pages of dated (October, 1905) advertisements at end of book, following the folded map. Albert Borlase Armitage (1864-1943) was navigator and second-in-command of Capt. Robert Scott's "Discovery" expedition of 1901-04. Armitage was born in Scotland and, in 1878, he enlisted as a cadet aboard the Royal Navy's training ship, H.M.S. Worcester. Upon completing his training, he gained a number of years experience aboard ocean liners. In 1884 he joined the Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition to Franz-Josef Land. By 1897, when he left the expedition, he had risen to the rank of second-in-command. In 1895, he participated in the rescue of Fridtjof Nansen and his men. His chief accomplishment on the Scott expedition was his first season's success in the western mountains and the ascent of Victoria Land, where he became the first person to walk on the polar plateau. Rosove notes that this title "exposes lighter and anecdotal sides of the expedition and contains occasional comment on the men's characters. [He] avoided divulging his personal feelings about Scott but in his autobiography was openly uncomplimentary to him." Our copy is in the original binding, which has been professionally re-backed, and the original endpapers have been replaced. Very light soiling to some page corners, and to the bottom edge of the text block. Laid-in loose is a two-page letter from Fritdjof Nansen, addressed to the publisher Edward Arnold, in which Nansen discusses his concerns about the writing of the preface for this book, e.g.: "If the English is not good I hope you will do me the favour to have it carefully revised". Rosove 17.A1.a (who describes this title as "scarce"), Renard 50. Bound in original illustrated green cloth [Attributes: First Edition]

Handbuch der Blütenbiologie, 3 Bände (in 5 Bänden), Prachtausgabe.

Leipzig, Wilhelm Engelmann, 1898 - 1905. - Vollständiges Werk in 3 Bänden (gebunden in 5 Bänden). Bandes.

        Russia

London - Cassell & Company, 1905 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. Donald Mackenzie Wallace's famous work on Russian civilisation, handsomely bound in an Asprey binding, and illustrated with two fold out maps. From the collection of Count Sangorski. Wallace, who was a foreign correspondent for The Times, lived in Russia from 1870-5, ostensibly to visit the Ossetes tribe in the Caucuses. However, he ended up finding Russia itself far more interesting, and this work is the result. It was originally published in 1876-7, right before the Russo-Turkish war. Appropriately, perhaps, this edition was published as anothermore decisive war came to a close, andRussia faced catastrophic defeat against the Japanese in Manchuria and the Korean straights. With publisher's advertisements appended to both volumes and separately paginated. With two highly useful fold out maps, one showing Russian population densities and the other its areas of vegetation. The definitive British viewpoint of Russia as it teetered on the brink of turmoil in the years before the first world war. Count R. L Sangorski was a prominent art collector famous for contributing to the John Marriot collection of Chinese Art. These works are listed on a receipt for binding issued to him in the 1980s, found with the sale of his collection. Bound in the 1980's after Asprey's acquisition of Zaehnsdorf bindery (1983), who merged it with their previous acquisition of Sangorski and Sutcliff. This binding is likely to be a Zaehnsdorf binding, under the name of Asprey. Condition: In a crushed morocco Asprey binding, with gilt titles to the spines. Externally excellent, with little discernable wear - a small mark to the tail of the spine of volume I only. Lightly foxed for the first and last few pages as usual, otherwise generally clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: NEAR FINE.

MORDEKHAI ?IMANUEL NOAH [AND] MASAOT B?ANGLIAH, TSFARAT, SEFARD, U?V?ARTZOT BARBARIA

Warsaw: Achiasaf Society, 1905. 1st Edition [and] 1st Hebrew edition. Modern boards, 8vo, [66], 25 pages. 22 cm. In Hebrew. Two books published together. First Title is Mordekhai ?Imanuel Noah by Rabbi Max Raisin. Title translates to Mordecai Manuel Noah. Second title is Masaot by Mordecai Manuel Noah, the First Hebrew translation of Noah?s famous ?Travels in England, France, Spain and the Barbary States, in the years 1813-14 and 15.? Publishing the work in Hebrew, in Eastern Europe, was a way to reach the wider Jewish world to tell the amazing story of Noah, probably the most powerful Jew in the Western Hemisphere of the early 19th Century. Both are published by the Achiasaf Society, a Hebrew language publisher founded by noted Zionist thinker Asher Zvi Hirsch Ginzberg, better known as Ahad Ha?Am. It contains a brief biography of American-Jewish statesman and proto-Zionist thinker, Mordecai Manuel Noah, and Noah?s own accounts of his travels in England, France, Spain, and the Barbary Coast. (Today known as the Greater Maghreb. ) Noah, a journalist, playwright, politician, and lawyer, was one of the most prominent Jews of Early America, and served as Consul to Kingdom of Tunis (modern Tunisia) under President James Madison. When then-Secretary of State James Monroe removed Noah from Noah?s post, citing his religion as an ?obstacle?, it sparked an outcry among American Jews and non-Jews alike, with Noah receiving letters of support from John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. Discouraged from pursuing government positions, Noah continued his career as a newspaperman in New York, founding and editing numerous publications there. Unfortunately, Noah is probably best remembered for his ambitious but failed attempt to establish ?Ararat, A Jewish City of Refuge? on Grand Island in Upstate New York. Noah?s ardent belief that Jews would flock to his settlement to escape international persecution proved false, and ?Ararat? never came to be. Masaot was written in 1814, before Noah?s removal from his position of Consul, and ten years before the failure of Ararat. His biography is written by Rabbi Max Raisin, prominent early 20th-century historian of Jewish America. SUBJECT(S) Jewish politicians -- United States -- Biography -- Voyages and Travels. OCLC lists only 4 copies worldwide (NYPL, YU, HUC, and UPENN) . Ex-Library with usual markings. Paper beginning to yellow. Otherwise Very Good Condition. Rare. (AMR-50-1)
