        Mr. Churchill on the Aliens Bill

      Here is the extremely rare 1904 leaflet publication of Churchill's letter in opposition to the Aliens Bill. Churchill's letter of 30 May 1904 was printed in the Manchester Guardian and published soon after by the Liberal Publication Department as this single-sheet, double-sided "Leaflet No. 2006". The fight against the Aliens Bill was an important one for Churchill - providing opportunity for his first speech from the Liberal Opposition benches, burnishing his Liberal credentials as a champion of the disenfranchised, and ultimately scoring a political victory against the Conservative Party he had so recently abandoned when the Aliens Bill was defeated. The Aliens Bill of 1904 was a thinly disguised effort at anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant electioneering by the Conservative British Government. "A series of pogroms in Tsarist Russia over the previous twenty-five years had brought to England a large and increasing number of Jews, most of them poor, ill-educated and unskilled." (Sir Martin Gilbert, Volume II, p.81) The Aliens Bill proposed giving the Home Secretary considerable powers of discretion and control in order to check the number of aliens. The young Churchill had recently left his father's Conservative Party and crossed the aisle to become a Liberal, earning a reputation as both a brash young radical and a traitor to his class. Churchill took a strong stand against the bill with the commanding mix of withering rhetoric and logical deconstruction that would become his trademark: "To judge by the talk there has been, one would have imagined we were being overrun by the swarming invasion and 'ousted' from our island." And yet "all the aliens of Great Britain do not amount to a one-hundred-and-fortieth part of the total population." (Letter of 30 May 1904, Vol. II, p.82) Churchill took the bill to task for being both unworkable in application and unjust in intent: "The simple immigrant, the political refugee, the helpless and the poor - these are the folk who will be caught in the trammels of the bill." And before appealing to the better nature of "English working men" Churchill clearly stated the political impetus and cultural prejudice underpinning the Aliens Bill: "It is expected to appeal to insular prejudice against foreigners, to racial prejudice against Jews, and to Labour prejudice against competition; and it will no doubt supply a variety of rhetorical phrases for the approaching election." Procedural debate about the Bill in June gave Churchill the opportunity to make his first speech from the Opposition benches. Serving on the Committee tasked with the Bill, Churchill took every opportunity to attack. The Government abandoned the Bill on July 7. Of the very few original leaflets that survive, most are bound within the Liberal Publications Department annual compendiums. This leaflet is instead finely bound by itself. The leaflet itself is in truly fine condition, crisp, clean, and bright with no wear, soiling, or flaws to report. It is bound in half crimson polished leather over marbled paper boards, with gilt spine lettering and double black rules at the transitions. To give the binding thickness, two blank leaves precede the leaflet and eleven blank leaves follow. Condition of the binding is near fine, with only fractional wear at the spine ends and corners.         AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED

      Villa de Quarto, Florence. 12 April 1904.. 1 2/3 pages, on two panels of a folded octavo sheet of hotel stationary. Old folds for mailing, paper faintly tanned, very good. A poignant letter, written by Clemens from Florence, where he was situated in an attempt to find a climate more favorable for his wife, Olivia, then critically ill. He responds to a "Mrs. Graham," in gratitude for her charming letter, which arrived "just in time to do a kind of miracle: that is, add a grace to this April morning, a thing difficult to the verge of impossibility; for the foliage & the flowers are looking their ... richest ... in the flooding sunshine, & far-away Florence, glistening vaguely through her enchanted veil, is a dream!" On the second panel of the lettersheet, the mood emphatically changes: "The Obverse - minutes later. The physicians have come to hold a consultation; for our house is a hospital these 5 months, & the sunshine is all outside of it, there is none within." Signed: "Sincerely Yours, S.L. Clemens." In June, Olivia Clemens died in Florence of heart failure.

This magnificent record of one of the earliest major international conflicts of the twentieth century is remarkable on several counts. In essence an early partwork, it was compiled and issued whilst the war was still in progress, enabling its readers to follow the course and consequences of the fighting in a manner previously unparalleled. Certainly it is unique is the comprehensiveness and detail of its coverage, and in the variety and extent of its illustrations, the two together constituting a truly massive documentary resource. There is a little occasional spotting to some free endpapers. The calf on one edge of the volume for 1908 is slightly sunned. Otherwise this is a handsome set, scarcely used. This set weighs 4.5 kilos wrapped, requiring extra postage.

      Tokyo: K. Ogawa, 1904. First edition. Folding map, and numerous black and white images from photographs with facing descriptions in English on the opposite page, each with shorter captions beneath in Japanese. Oblong folio, original decorated purple silk-covered boards with titles and decorations in gold embroidery, fine silk-backed endpapers decorated with gold, bound at the spine with white ribbon in Japanese style. 177 ff (unpaginated) Internally a very handsome copy with only very minor age toning, the binding with some repair and restoration and showing some wear. Title-page with a bit of wear, the plates all in very pleasing condition. VERY SCARCE and one of the earliest publications of it kind. A fine photographic touring book of Japan produced and published by the era’s leading photographer. Ogawa (1860-1929) was not only the most accomplished Japanese photographer of the period, he was also a printer and publisher. He was a pioneer in photomechanical printing and photography in the Meiji era. In 1882, he moved to Boston where he took courses in portrait photography and the dry plate process. He also studied collotype printing at the Albert Type Company. Returning to Japan in 1882, he opened the first photography studio in Tokyo. Ogawa, in conjunction with the rail authorities, produced these books to promote Western tourism in Japan. Over the course of the following decade he would produce several, but this is among the earliest and is quite scarce.

Black and white title page and 21 of 24 color collotype plates (look like lithographs), each approximately 20 x 14 inches, loose in portfolio - paper covered boards with cloth spine and corners. Portfolio rubbed at extremities with occasional spotting; the plates are in excellent condition with minor creasing on the left margin (well outside image) produced by the tight dimensions of the portfolio case (title page considerably creased along left edge). A portfolio featuring stunning large color plates of beautifully designed Art Nouveau stained glass windows. The windows were created by nine different artists (R. Beauclair, M.J. Gradl, G.M. Ellwood, P. Lang, R. Geyling, J. Goller, R. Bacard, R. Waldraff, R. Rochga). Each artist is identified by initials printed at the bottom of the plate; a key to these appears on the verso of the title page. While the visual motif is overwhelmingly Art Nouveau, a number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics to emerge in upcoming decades. A scarce title held by only two libraries in the United States. .

      1904. Our Village. A country Cricket match. Original pen-and-ink watercolour illustration (356 × 236 mm), in a wash-line mount and gold leaf frame. Margins a little toned. In excellent condition. The original illustration, signed by the artist, for one of the scenes in Mary Russell Mitford's "Our Village", which comprised a series of sketches of country life. Brock's illustrations form part of the "Series of English Idylls" published by J. M. Dent & Co. The scene depicted illustrates the narrator's opinion of the gentleman cricketer, as opposed to "capital hitters" such as the village blacksmith. According to Barclay's World of Cricket, this passage of Mitford's work constitutes "the first major prose on the game.

In fine condition. Handsome set, very well preserved. - - First edition. Fully collated. With an introduction by Wasuke Jikemura. A most remarkable production, scarce in its entirety. Published between 1904 and 1905 by Kinkodo Publishing Corporation of Tokyo, this publication in ten volumes reached subscribers in Germany, Netherlands, India, South Africa, England, France, China, United States, and Australia; a small number of copies, however, did survive. The scope and concept were unique. Combining news, war records, reports, stories, commentaries, and official documents together with historical background, manners and customs of the Japanese people, the Imperial family, daily life, religion, etc., it provides an unparalleled reflection of the period. The ten volumes are accompanied by an extraordinarily rich collection of visual material. It includes an extended portrait gallery of Imperial, military, and political personage; battle scenes; infantry, artillery, and naval operations; transportation; war aftermath; POW; medical corps and wounded evacuation; troops encampment; the winter campaign, etc., mixed with images of civil, daily life, weaving a fantastic tapestry of war and peace iconography. The splendid chromolithograph plates are an entrance for the eyes, and the inclusion of the fine collotype plates adds a touch of elegance to this visual celebration.

He stood at the crossroads in the evolution of history writing between the age of the gentleman scholar in the library and that of the professional scholar in the archives. Lecky was, however, notable on two counts: as a British historian of ideas and as the writer of Ireland’s first "philosophical history" (he liked that Burkean phrase), for neither Young Ireland nor the Celtic revivalists produced a notable historian. His major narrative history was undertaken as a vindication of the Irish people, but he was a sharp critic of the careless or deliberately misleading application of arguments from Irish history to justify the patriotic cause. He was, therefore, both the first national historian of Ireland and the first "revisionist" of the nationalist idealization of Ireland’ (ODNB).

Cloth mottled, ends and corners lightly rubbed, mild partial toning to endpapers; a very good copy. First separate edition of Wiggin's story, first published in The Village Watchtower in 1895. This copy is affectionately inscribed by the author to E. Nesbit on the front free endpaper, "To. "E. Nesbit" whose work commands my admiration - and my love. Kate-Douglas Wiggin. The Evenning-of-Happy-Meeting, May 16th 1905", and bears Nesbit's attractive illustrated bookplate to the front pastedown. Nesbit and Wiggin were kindred, though transatlantic, spirits, both authors of much-loved children's literature (The Railway Children (1906) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1903) respectively), and both taking a keen and active interest in social and political reform (Nesbit as co-founder of the Fabian Society, Wiggin as a pioneer in children's education), and this lovely association copy charmingly attests to the meeting of two contemporary greats of children's literature.

        Autograph Letters, Signed, from Charles Ricketts to Laurence Hodson

      (London: N.p., 1904). (2)pp. + (1)ff; (1)pp; (1)pp. A set of three autograph letters, together with the original envelopes, from Vale Press founder, illustrator, and designer Charles Ricketts to the private press collector and patron Laurence Hodson. The letters chronicle the purchase of six Vale Press books printed on vellum, which were produced by the Press in very limitated quantities and were highly prized. In the first letter, postmarked September 23, 1904, Ricketts informs Hodson that due to the death of one of his vellum subscribers, six Vale Press books printed on vellum are now available for purchase: The Parables, Ecclesiastes, Amber Witch, Julia Donna, Kingis Quair, and David. Ricketts inquires, "Do you know of any deserving Town, or person who would care to have them." Hodson himself was clearly interested: also included with this letter is an invoice for all of the six vellum books mentioned in the letter, dated September 23, sent from Ricketts to Hodson. With characteristic humor, Ricketts closes his letter to Hodson by describing his recent seaside holiday: "We have just returned from the sea to recoup in balmy London, how I dislike being away from one's own den, and what cooking one has to put up with outside London! This is the seventh time we return from Broadstairs vowing we will never return." In the second letter, postmarked September 29, 1904, Ricketts provides an update on Hodson's order, saying that it will be shipped soon. In a postscript added at the top of the letter, Ricketts writes, "This was written on the 23d and not posted as I have to get Shannon in a packing mood in conjunction with brown paper which is not always easy." He adds that he is also reservig a vellum copy of the Vale Press bibliography for Hodson. In the final letter, postmarked October 24, 1904, Ricketts declares that "Shannon and the brown paper have at last come into conjunction and you will receive by parcels post the derelict vellums." He adds, "I should be happy if you could make it convenient to pay for these rather shortly, as our finances are at the lowest possible ebb, we have bought the Piero de Cosimo and are reduced to theoretic banking accounts and the glorious arrogance of possession." Ricketts was a passionate art collector, and he and his partner Charles Shannon collected works by the old masters, Egyptian and Greek antiquities, Japanese prints, and Renaissance art. Letters are creased from being folded to fit into the envelope, else fine.

        Photo Album of Rhodesia and its Tribute to Great Explorers, Captured only a Few Years after the Matabele Wars, and Prior to the Growth of Tourism

      Rhodesia, circa 1904-1905 Oblong octavo album contains 87 sepia photographs of Victoria Falls and environs, mounted onto windowed cardstock leaves measuring approximately 9,5 x 7cm. Original green cloth album, with minor fraying to extremities, otherwise in very good condition. A group of American travellers, evidently of comfortable means, records in photographs, a journey to Rhodesia, and the town of Livingstone, specifically to witness the grandeur of Victoria Falls, an adventure which was beginning to gain popularity in the late colonial era. One can deduce from the images, that these were some of the earliest tourists to the area. Important monuments are captured, including among others the Paul Kruger monument in Pretoria, and the statue of Cecil Rhodes in Bulawayo, Matabeleland. Such as it does today, evidently the magnificently humbling Victoria Falls etched its impact on these foreign eyes, who choose to include over twenty different views of it and its thundering roll into the first gorge on the Zambezi River. The groups is travelling in a horse-drawn carriage of extraordinary girth and height, requiring the power of 9 horses. Local inhabitants are seen alongside their rudimentary dwellings composed of sticks and mud, sitting most vulnerably in a vast empty desert. Women are seen carrying fruit baskets on their head, however many are donning Western clothing, indicating foreign influence. Four images show locals rowing in a canoe. Also featured is a rare view of the original historic 'Livingstone Hotel,' the original Victoria Falls Hotel which was intended only as temporary quarters for railway employees, and was to be removed after construction of the bridge was complete as no buildings were to remain within sight of the Falls. However once established, it was quickly expanded and proved impossible to close, despite the objections of the Administrator of North Western Rhodesia, Robert Coryndon and the residents and traders of the newly established town of Livingstone. The first structure was built in early 1904 and opened for business on 8 June. By the beginning of 1905, tourist traffic to the Falls had increased considerably and it was necessary to enlarge the accommodation at the hotel. Two locomotive sheds in use on the Beria line were dismantled and sent to the Falls. One was commissioned as accommodation and the other as a dining room. They remained on site until 1917. .

        Jiu-Jitsu (Yielding Way).

      A historic specimen, owned by Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow, a close friend of President Roosevelt and the man who first demonstrated jujutsu to the President. Dr. Bigelow arranged for a jujutsu demonstration with Secretary of War, Elihu Root at the White House within the first months of Roosevelt's Presidency. With minimal training in the martial art, he easily threw Root to the ground, much to Roosevelt's delight. Thereafter, Dr. Bigelow sent the President his first proper judogi (jujutsu jackets) and recommended the author as instructor. A room was set aside in the White House and altered to the President's wishes for jujutsu lessons and practice. Roosevelt helped spur the practice of jujutsu in the United States as its earliest, celebrated American enthusiast. Ownership is documented in part by a White House visitor's card signed by Theodore Roosevelt and an intriguing signed letter from Roosevelt to Bigelow on White House stationary, written Feb. 8, 1904, hours before Japan launched the surprise attack that began the Russo-Japanese War. Brief and pungent, it intimates the President's preoccupation with Japan and the Far East and mentions jujitsu in context of a book; "That is a first class book. I wish I could see you and talk over various matters. Poor Japan has more important things to attend to than Jiu Jitsu at present!" COMPLETE TITLE: Jiu-Jitsu (The Yielding Way). First Japanese attack in Russo-Japanese War launched at 2:15 PM ET. Japan would preoccupy him 1904-09 and he would state, problems with Japan gave him more concern than, "any of the other rather stormy incidents during my career as President" (Esthus). O'BRIEN: Roosevelt's first jujutsu instructor, known to have provided lessons to the President in March and April of 1902. From TR letter to Bigelow in Dickinson State archives (3/19/1902); "I am having a great time with O'Brien. His system is marvelous, but I am finding difficulty in learning it." O'Brien was among the first Americans to extensively study one of the principal jujutsu styles in Japan. A disciple of Tanaka and Inouye Sensei (Kishoku Inoue), he returned in 1900 from Nagasaki. In 1910, as part of the U.S. Army's modernization effort, he was made a captain and assigned to developing the early H2H hand-to-hand combat program. The prospectus is bound at the rear. Binding: Signed binding by M. Lortic: red morocco, gilt extra with accents of black; original wrappers bound in. Board edges with gilt double fillet; wide turn-ins with richly gilt; marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Provenance: Cortlandt F. Bishop, with his elegant red leather bookplate. A COPY WITH SUPERB PROVENANCE and especially so as regards its association with garden design and garden ornament, This copy was owned by and comes from the home of Nancy Lancaster and her husband, Arthur Ronald Lambert Field Tree. Lancaster has been called "the most influential English gardener since Gertrude Jekyll." Profusely illustrated with 52 illustrations, 27 of which are colourplates or half tones by Maxfield Parrish, the rest being photographs and drawings by E. Denison, Malcolm Fraser and C. A. Vanderhof. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original dark forest green cloth decorated and lettered in gilt on the spine, cover design by Decorative Designers with elaborate pictorial decorations after Maxfield Parrish in an all over design, upper cover stamped in gilt and blocked in light green, blue, purple, gilt and rust, showing a villa garden. 270 pp. A fine copy with only light evidence of age or use, an uncommonly bright and appealing copy, internally clean and fresh, firm and solid, the binding with only minor evidence of age, the gilt bright and the colours unfaded. SCARCE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE AND A COPY WITH VERY FINE PROVENANCE. One of the most well written books on Italian garden design. The combination of Wharton’s liquid descriptions and Parrish’s romantic paintings, makes for an extremely delightful book. Special attention is given to the gardens found at Florentine, Sienese and Roman villas. The relationship of the buildings to the natural surroundings is explored in detail. “The Italian garden does not exist for its flowers; its flowers exist for it: they are a late and infrequent adjunct to its beauties, a parenthetical grace counting only as one more touch in the general effect of enchantment. This is no doubt partly explained by the difficulty of cultivating any but spring flowers in so hot and dry a climate, and the result has been a wonderful development of the more permanent effects to be obtained from the three other factors in garden-composition - marble, water and perennial verdure - and the achievement, by their skillful blending, of a charm independent of the seasons”. This copy was owned by and is from the home of Nancy Lancaster and her second husband, important Conservative MP Ronald Lambert Tree. It has his engraved library plate on the front endpaper. Nancy Lancaster (Nancy Keene Perkins Fields Tree Lancaster) was a leading 20th-century tastemaker and the owner of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, an influential British decorating firm that codified what is known as the English country-house look. Nancy was first married, in 1917, to Henry Field, the heir to the Marshall Field department store fortune. He died five months later, and in 1920 she married his bisexual cousin, journalist and investor Arthur Ronald Lambert Tree. The couple moved to England where they took a 10-year repairing lease on Kelmarsh Hall near Market Harborough in Northamptonshire, which Nancy redecorated with help from Mrs Guy Bethell of Elden Ltd. In 1933 the Trees bought Ditchley Park near Charlbury in Oxfordshire, and it was the decoration of this house which earned Nancy the reputation of having "the finest taste of almost anyone in the world." She worked on it with Lady Colefax and the French decorator Stéphane Boudin of the Paris firm Jansen. In November 1933 Ronald Tree became Conservative Party member of Parliament for Harborough. Tree was among a small group who saw the rising Nazi party in Germany as a threat to Britain, and he became a member of the anti-appeasement MPs (who included Eden, Duff Cooper etc.) who would meet at his house in Queen Anne's Gate. Winston Churchill was not really part of this group, but he and his wife Clementine dined at Ditchley on numerous occasions. During the war there was considerable concern over the visibility of Churchill’s retreat home at Chequers, so Tree offered Churchill use of Ditchley, which thanks to its tree coverage and no visible access road made it an ideal site which Churchill was happy with. Churchill first went to Ditchley in lieu of Chequers on 9 November 1940, accompanied by Clementine and his daughter Mary. The Trees divorced in 1947 and Nancy shortly thereafter married Lieutenant Colonel Claude Lancaster and began working under the name of Nancy Lancaster. Lancaster was a former military officer, country squire and member of Parliament who owned Kelmarsh Hall near Market Harborough, Northamptonshire. Renowned today for its gardens, it is a popular tourist site and said to be Nancy Lancaster's favorite home of all despite their divorce after only five years in 1953. The renowned British interior designer David Hicks called Nancy Lancaster "the most influential English gardener since Gertrude Jekyll." She was often referred to as the doyenne of interior decorators and smart gardeners. She, together with business partner John Fowler, created much of the English country house look.
