        Tale of Peter Rabbit, The

1904. A Fine Early 'Tale of Peter Rabbit' In the Exceptionally Rare Printed Glassine Dust JacketPOTTER, Beatrix. The Tale of Peter Rabbit. London: Frederick Warne and Co., [n.d., April or October, 1904]. Second published edition with double page colored endpapers (i.e. seventh or eighth printing). Twelvemo (5 7/16 x 4 1/8 inches; 139 x 106 mm.). 85, [1, printer's slug] pp. Color illustrated end-papers, color frontispiece and twenty-six color illustrations. Dark green boards, white lettered, with pictorial label in color. In the original glazed paper glassine dust jacket printed in black with vertical lines at the top and bottom of the spine indicating where the fold should be for the front panel, with an advertisement on the rear panel for “The Peter Rabbit Books” listing five titles, including The Tale of Benjamin Bunny and The Tale of Two Bad Mice under “New Books for 1904,” and with advertisements on both flaps: “A Selected List of Art Picture Books for Children.” The top (1/2 inch) and part of the bottom (1/2 inch) of the jacket spine (including the'n' of the word net in the price) are missing, as well as a small piece (5/8 x 1/2 inch) missing on the top of the back panel at the spine. Overall a very bright, fine copy in a very good example of the exceptionally rare dust jacket. This printed glassine dust jacket is of the utmost rarity with only one example (on a first edition of The Tale of Two Bad Mice London, 1904), having appeared at auction over the past thirty-five years. This jacket was used for this edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and also The Tale of Two Bad Mice. The printing of The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a little complicated - here is fairly simple explanation:There were two 'Privately Printed' editions which appeared in December 1901 and February 1902. They both had black and white illustrations with the exception of the frontispiece which was printed in color. The first printing (December 1901) of 250 copies in olive-green paper boards had a 'flat-back' spine. The second printing (February 1902) of 200 copies in olive-green paper boards had a 'rounded' spine. After that came the first of the 'Warne' editions which had all of the illustrations in color. The first 'trade' edition of 8,000 copies (October 1902) appeared in gray or brown paper boards; the second and third printings of 12,000 and 8,220 copies (November 1902 and December 1902) appeared in green paper boards. The fourth printing of 8,250 copies (April 1903) had the misprint "wept big tears" changed to "shed big tears" (page 51) and was also bound in green paper boards. All four of these printings had a colored frontispiece, thirty color illustrations, plain leaf-pattern end-papers and the text finished on page 97. At that time the colored pictorial end-papers were introduced and the number of color illustrations in the book was reduced from thirty to twenty-six. The pagination was also changed and the text now finished on page 85. The fifth printing of 10,000 copies (the first with a single-page end-paper design) appeared in October 1903. The sixth printing of 10,000 copies (the first with a double-page end-paper design) appeared in December 1903. The seventh and eighth printings(identical) of 10,000 and 20,000 copies with slightly changed end-paper designs appeared in April and October of 1904. “The charm of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, as Beatrix Potter herself noted, derives in part from the fact that it ‘was written to a child’ in the form of a letter, ‘not made to order’ (Linder, p. 110). Some years later she borrowed this letter to a lame boy to use as the basis for an expanded version of Peter Rabbit’s story with forty-two black-and-white illustrations, of which she had 250 copies privately printed in 1901. The following year it was published with illustrations in the three-color process printed by Edmund Evans. Its success was immense. So familiar did her animal characters become among children that Miss Potter was told how ‘a small boy in church once inquired audibly whether the apostle was Peter Rabbit’ (Linder, p. 92). Her next book, The Tailor of Gloucester of 1902, also was first printed privately, but thereafter she had a large and eager audience for everything she wrote” (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England, 331A)."After the fourth printing, the picture of Mrs. McGregor and the pie was removed, together with three other pictures including the cover picture, to make room for the new coloured pictorial endpapers..." (Linder, p. 109). "With the introduction of the coloured endpapers, four of the coloured pictures were removed to enable the printer to continue with the same imposition of the sheets" (Linder, p. 422).Quinby 2d. Linder pp. 109, 422.

A TOPOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION OF VIRGINIA, PENNSYLVANIA, MARYLAND, AND NORTH CAROLINA, REPRINTED FROM THE ORIGINAL EDITION OF 1778

Cleveland: The Burrows Brothers Company, 1904. Limited Edition, numbered 37 or 245. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Octavo. Full bound in maroon buckram with title stamped in gold on the spine; previous owner name and date on the front free endpaper; the small ownership ticket on the front pastedown indicating this volume belong to Professor Coolie Verner of the University of Virginia; the front hinge has been tastefully mended; the rear hinge has been reinforced; the pocket holding the large folding map has been reinforced on all sides; the maps is quite lovely and roughly 3' x 3'; there are some closed tears where a few of the fold-lines intersect. Born in Monmouth County, N.J. in 1730, Hutchins was a military engineer and geographer-the first and only civil "Geographer of the United States." According to the Dictionary of American Biography, Hutchins was an officer of Pennsylvania colonial troops from 1757 to 1759. He served in the French and Indian War. As a military engineer, he laid out plans for military works at Fort Pitt and at Pensacola, FL. He kept journals of his travels while under military orders, and illustrated them with maps, several of which were published. But it is this present work that is among his most significant achievements. This is quite a scarce reprint of this important geological work, nearly unobtainable in the original 1778 edition. Interestingly, a memorial notice in the Gazette of the United States remarks, "His map early laid the foundation of American geography, and his services since his appointment under the United States, have been universally acknowledged?. He has measured much earth, but a small space now contains him." Even smaller is the space containing his book. Very Good binding.

Offered here is the original pen and ink drawing by Denslow that appears as a chapter heading for Chapter 6 of The Pearl and the Pumpkin by Paul West, published in 1904 by Dillingham. The original is done on art paper measuring 9 1/4" wide x 12" high and is nicely framed to 14 x 16 1/2". There are pencilled production notes in margins and the piece is in Fine condition, signed by Denslow including his characteristic sea-horse.         On Double Refraction in Matter moving through the Aether" (Brace) WITH "On the Structure of the Atom: an Investigation of the Stability and Periods of Oscillation of a number of Corpuscles arranged at equal intervals around the Circumference of a Circle; with Application of the results to the Theory of Atomic Structure" (Thomson) in The Philosophical Magazine and Journal, Vol. VII, Sixth Series, January-June 1904, pp. 317-329 (Brace) and pp. 237-265 (Thomson)

FIRST EDITION OF THE BRACE EXPERIMENT, "THE FIRST OPTICAL EXPERIMENT MEASURING THE RELATIVE MOTION OF EARTH AND THE LUMINIFEROUS AETHER WHICH WERE SUFFICIENTLY PRECISE TO DETECT MAGNITUDES OF SECOND ORDER TO V/C" (Wikipedia). Brace's results were negative, "which was of gret importance for the development of the Lorentz transformation and consequently of the theory of relativity" (ibid). The American physicist and specialist in optics "examined the question [of] whether the Earth's motion may cause a body to become doubly refracting," something which as first sight might be expected (PRNAAS, 1904, 6, 809). Earlier in his career, Brace developed "extremely sensitive optical techniques" to one of the critical problems of the time (Dictionary of Scientific Biography, II, 382). "Two years earlier, Lord Rayleigh had proposed that the Lorentz-Fitzgerald contraction, if it existed, might produce an observable double refraction in a moving transparent medium. Rayleigh made experiments in which he failed to find the predicted effect, but his work was not quite accurate enough to be conclusive. Brace pointed this out and reconducted the investigation in his own laboratory, establishing beyond a doubt the absence of double refraction caused by movement of the refracting medium through the ether" (ibid). ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS VOLUME: J. J. Thomson's 'Plum Pudding Model': "The most widely accepted theory of atomic structure up to about 1913" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 34). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor and Francis. Entire volume. Ex-libris and bearing occasional light stamp within. New end papers. No marks at the spine whatsoever. Octavo (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). [viii], 720, [6]. 27 plates. Handsomely rebound in three quarter calf over gilt-ruled maroon paper boards. Four gilt-ruled raised bands at the spine. Gilt devices in the spine compartments. Gilt-lettered red and black spine labels. Tightly and very solidly bound. An occasional spot within, quite minor. Very good condition in every way.

Signed postcard photograph ("R. Leoncavallo") with autograph musical quotation from the first act of his opera La Bohème

A fine bust-length photograph of the composer with his trademark handlebar mustache, boldly signed in black ink and dated Berlin, June 1904. With a two-measure autograph musical quotation to upper left, with text, identified in the composer's hand as being from "La Bohème I Act."Addressed to Fraulein Grete Larass in Berlin. Very slightly worn at edges; remnants of tape to edges of verso. . ["Leoncavallo"] completed his version of Murger’s Scènes de la vie de Bohème, on which he had been working since 1892, and its first performance was carefully supervised by his new publisher Sonzogno in Venice in 1897. The long period of composition during which he sought to convey the realities of life in the Latin Quarter of Paris was preceded by fierce controversy with Puccini and the Ricordi publishing house. It was Leoncavallo who first had the idea of making it into an opera, but his Bohème, although it has pages full of vitality, is much more a social document of the period, and after the first years in which the two operas were performed almost side by side, it was Puccini’s version that survived in the repertory."         The Northern Tribes of Central Australia

London: Macmillan and Co., 1904. Octavo, with over 300 photographic illustrations, folding map and appendix table, two colour plates with printed transparent overlays, signed by the authors on the title-page; some flecking and a little shaken, but a very good copy in original gilt-decorated cloth. Signed by the authors. First edition of a pioneering work in Australia anthropology, signed by both authors. Professor Sir Walter Baldwin Spencer (1860-1929) was an Oxford-educated polymath who trained as an evolutionary biologist while cultivating an enduring interest in social anthropology. He first travelled into central Australia as a scientist and photographer on the Horn expedition of 1894, during the course of which he met Francis Gillen, then Alice Springs postmaster who was later appointed to the role of special magistrate and Aboriginal sub-protector for that region. In 1896 Spencer joined Gillen for the most intensive field work attempted to date on traditional Aboriginal customs and lifestyle. Spencer's ongoing work with Gillen was one of the most fruitful and enduring scholarly collaborations in Australian anthropological history. This book is the result of their fieldwork in 1901-1902 amongst the Warramunga, Kaitish, Arunta and other tribes of central and northern inland Australia where the pair made a copious photographic record of ceremonies, ritual processes and aspects of daily life. Their descriptions of totemic social divisions strongly influenced the great structural anthropologists of the twentieth-century, including Claude Levi-Strauss.

        NOSTROMO

1904. [Arnold Bennett's copy] A Tale of the Seaboard. London and New York: Harper & Brothers, 1904. Original dark blue cloth decorated in light blue. First Edition of Conrad's great novel involving a South American silver mine, and the corruption and dishonesty fostered by its riches.~Conrad was extending his "Lord Jim" theme: that the man who slowly grows rich can be a victim of the silver, not its conqueror; that wealth is not something gained but a trap for those who relinquish, however momentarily, their sense of themselves..." [Karl]~It is believed that the first edition consisted of about 2000 copies; we find it to be rather scarce, about third or fourth among Conrad's books. This is a remarkably fine, bright copy, essentially without wear or soil; atypically for this thick wove paper, there is NO foxing on the leaves. Cagle A10a.1; one of the "Modern Library 100" great novels of the 20th Century.~Provenance: in addition to the more-recent discreet bookplate of the amazing Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger, this copy bears the bookplate "From the Personal Library of Arnold Bennett" (which was applied posthumously). The author and editor and critic E. Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was a long-time acquaintance of (and early champion of the writings of) Conrad, occasionally in contact because they used the same agent (J. B. Pinker). In 1914, Bennett was anxious about the prospects for his new book THE PRICE OF LOVE;~This glumness is accompanied, at much the same period, by a characteristically generous but somewhat depressed tribute to Conrad -- he had written to Conrad towards the end of 1912, expressing deep admiration of NOSTROMO [this very copy!], THE SECRET AGENT and UNDER WESTERN EYES, and now, in January 1914, reading CHANCE, he says in his journal: 'This is a discouraging book for a writer [to read], because he damn well knows he can't write as well as this... simply superb'.

        Autograph Telegram Signed

1904. Signed. SCOTT, Robert F. Autograph manuscript draft for a telegram signed (“Rob. F. Scott”) to an unknown recipient. Auckland Island, [circa March 20, 1904]. Fine four-page autograph account intended for telegram of Scott’s expedition to the Antarctic written upon his return in 1904. Scott launched his journey of exploration in 1901 and remained within the frigid reaches of the southern hemisphere for the next three years. Here, Scott recounts the last year of the expedition: “After departure of ‘Morning’ 1903… temperatures fell rapidly men employed laying in stock of seal meat for winter. Winter passed most pleasantly and in all respects with greater comfort than that of 1902… the routine of scientific observations and work was continued… Spring found all in excellent health and spirits… Wilson & party visited Emperor penguin roosting at Cape Crozier with success… temperatures encountered… constantly below -50° Fahr. ” Scott takes note of several expeditions that met with varying degrees of success, including one which explored a strait containing a “large glacier of inland ice” and another which discovered “a vast plain… [which was determined] to be afloat. ” He happily notes that “these journeys performed under very unfavorable conditions of weather & surface have added much to our information. ” Scott’s telegram contains descriptions of the geography: “Interior Victoria Land continues at height of 9000 feet–Evidently vast continental plateau… Glacier Valley affords magnificent scenery and natural geological section of mountains… Explored valley in detail discovering sand stone and plant remains. ” The official account of the expedition was not published in book form until 1905 (The Voyage of the ‘Discovery). Scientifically speaking, this first expedition was the more important of Scott’s two expeditions, although historically it is overshadowed by his tragic second journey, during which he perished. Perforation in upper left corner of each leaf, small loss to corner and edge of page 3, not affecting text; evidence of prior mounts on verso of each leaf. An exceptional document in excellent condition.
