THE HOUR-GLASS, CATHLEEN NI HOULIHAN, THE POT OF BROTH: BEING VOLUME TWO OF PLAYS FOR AN IRISH THEATRE

London: A.H. Bullen, 1904.. London: A.H. Bullen, 1904.. Green cloth, grey boards, paper spine label. Foxing early and late, a few small spots to boards, else a very good copy. First British edition. Lady Gregory's copy, with her bookplate. Inscribed: "Lady Gregory from [deletion] WB Yeats." An association copy rising somewhat beyond its obvious import, as CATHLEEN NI HOULIHAN was essentially a collaborative work by Yeats and Gregory. This is one of two presentation copies of this book to Gregory. The other copy included a draft of a 14-line poem by Yeats on a preliminary blank, as well as some scattered corrections on nine pages. It sold at the 1986 Gilvarry sale (lot 487), and reappeared in 2005 (Christie’s New York, 2 December, lot 100 - $42,000). Lady Gregory recorded the circumstances of her first meeting with Yeats, and the birth of a friendship central to modern Irish literary history in 'Our Irish Theatre': "On one of those days at Duras in 1898, Mr. Edward Martyn, my neighbour, came to see the Count (de Basterot), bringing with him Mr.Yeats, whom I did not then know very well, though I cared for his work very much and had already, through his directions, been gathering folk- lore. They had lunch with us, but it was a wet day, and we could not go out. After a while I thought the Count wanted to talk to Mr. Martyn alone; so I took Mr. Yeats to the office where the steward used to come to talk, less about business I think than of the Land War or the state of the country, or the last year's deaths and marriages from Kinvara to the headland of Aughanish. We sat there through that wet afternoon, and though I had never been at all interested in theatres, our talk turned on plays. Mr. Martyn had written two, The Heather Field and Maeve. They had been offered to London managers, and now he thought of trying to have them produced in Germany where there seemed to be more room for new drama than in England. I said it was a pity we had no Irish theatre where such plays could be given. Mr. Yeats said that had always been a dream of his, but he had of late thought it an impossible one, for it could not at first pay its way, and there was no money to be found for such a thing in Ireland. We went on talking about it, and things seemed to grow possible as we talked, and before the end of the afternoon we had made our plan. We said we would collect money, or rather ask to have a certain sum of money guaranteed. We would then take a Dublin theatre and give a performance of Mr. Martyn's Heather Field and one of Mr. Yeats's own plays, 'The Countess Cathleen'. I offered the first guarantee of £25." WADE 53.

        Ungarische Zirkusreiterin, 1904

Synthetic Philosophy of Herbert Spencer [with] Selected Works of Herbert Spencer [and with] An Autobiography (18 Volumes Uniformly Bound, Westminster/Authorized Edition)

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1904. Hardcover. Very good. Westminster edition, a limited edition of 1000 numbered sets, this being #729. Also noted on the copyright pages as the Authorized Edition. Only the two Autobiography volumes bear a date on the title page, but this (1904) likely is, or is close to, the publication date for the entire set. Eighteen volumes uniformly bound in dark green cloth, with top edges gilt, gilt lettering on spines, and facsimile signature stamped in gilt on upper boards. All volumes but one are internally fine: bindings tight and square, no markings or foxing, some unopened pages. Unfortunately, the boards have sustained varying degrees of insect damage, and--on two volumes only (Education; Facts and Comments)--water damage. Please see accompanying photographs for examples. The Education volume has rippled pages (this is the single volume not fine internally). The spines have relatively little damage, and the set still looks quite attractive on the shelf. Titles in the Synthetic Philosophy series include: First Principles; The Principles of Ethics (2 vols); The Principles of Psychology (3 vols); The Principles of Sociology (5 Vols); The Principles of Biology (2 Vols); Titles in the Selected Works series include:Facts and Comments; Social Statics, Abridged and Revised, together with The Man Versus the State; and Education, Intellectual, Moral, and Physical. It probably goes without saying, but shipping charges will be more than standard for this heavy set. Please email for a shipping quote.

1904 History of HENRY ESMOND William M. THACKERAY

sp;- London - Macmillan and Co., Ltd, 1904. sp;- London - Macmillan and Co., Ltd, 1904 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A bright, cleancopy of The History of Henry Esmond by William Makepeace Thackeray. Bound in half leather with gilt lettering and decoration. Prize copy. With an'A. & F. Denny'bookbinder's ink stamp on the front free-endpaper. William Makepeace Thackeray, 1811 1863, was an English novelist of the 19th century. He was famous for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society. After his education, Thackeray travelled Europe, and then squandered his inheritance on gambling and unfortunate business enterprises. He turned to art, which he studied in Paris, but did not pursue the profession. After marrying Isabella Shawe, Thackeray took to writing and journalism to support himself and his family. His novels became moderately successful, along with his works for magazines such as Frasers Magazine, Foreign Quartley Review, Punch and the Morning Chornicle. It was not until later, with the publication of Vanity Fair and Henry Esmond, that Thackerays reputation grew. As the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography tells us, it is on Esmond that Thackeray's fame as a historical novelist primarily rests Set during the reign of Queen Anne, the novel focuses attention on the English revolution and on the conflicts over succession caused by William III and Anne having no surviving children. . . Henry Esmond, writes his memoirs in the twilight of his years on his estate in Virginia, a property he came to after all the events worth telling about his life have taken place. . . Perhaps the most intriguing thing about Henry's life is his successive discoveries that what he thought was true, wonderful, and good proves to be false, disappointing, and even evil Thackeray once again plays off the narrator's insights against the reader's suspicions, giving readers one of the most thought-provoking and unsettling among Victorian novels. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. The front hinge is just starting. There is slight wear to the extremities, including slight bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, with some very slight browning and spotting on the endpapers. There is an ink inscription on thefront blank. Overall the condition is very good..

Vers L'ecueil de Minicoy Apres Huit Ans Dans L'ocean Pacifique Et Indien a Bord Du Yacht "le Tolna

Paris, 1904. Paris, 1904. b/w photo plates, linecuts, folding track charts. 4to. 395 pp. This lavishly produced book documents of a vanished way of life. The Hungarian Count Rodolfe Festetics von Tolna married a California heiress in 1892, and the following year the two took off on an extended seven year honeymoon cruise through the South Pacific. After divorcing the heiress he produced his first book, “Among the Cannibals,” which was something of a sensation. He followed it the next year with this one, “Toward the Reef of Minicoy.” He was a romantic, rather than a true scientist, but his interest in the people of Oceania, and their arts and cultural artifacts, was far ahead of its time. This book is richly illustrated with 50 plates of artifacts and more than 100 photographs of the natives he encountered. A classic example of early cultural anthropology. Text in French. Rebound in green buckram with leather spine label. VG-Fine.

        The Vicar of Wakefield

London - Methuen and Co., 1904. London - Methuen and Co., 1904 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of this issue of Oliver Goldsmith's novel, The Vicar of Wakefield. After Goldsmith gained renown as a poet, John Newbery finally published The Vicar of Wakefield in March 1766. The book was printed by Benjamin Collins of Salisbury, who had brought one-third of the copyright back in 1762, for Francis Newbery. Second and third editions, each consisting of 1000 copies, appeared in May and August respectively, printed by William Strahan; three editions were produced in Ireland in 1766 as well. Though the initial reception was mostly favourable questions immediately arose about its narrative structure. The Monthly Review commented: Through the whole course of our travels in the wild regions of romance, we never met with anything more difficult to characterize than the Vicar of Wakefield (Monthly Review, 34, 1766, 407). The Critical Review praised its genuine touches of nature, easy strokes of humour, pathetic pictures of domestic happiness and domestic distress (Critical Review, 21, 1766, 440) but faulted the awkward plot reversals in the second half. (DNB)With twenty-four beautifully coloured plates. Condition: In original publisher's paper vellum binding with original spine label affixed. Externally smart, with some shelfwear only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spotting throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD..

The Poems of Algernon Charles Swinburne

London - Chatto and Windus, 1904. London - Chatto and Windus, 1904 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An uncommon, complete, attractive, first edition set of the poetic work of Swinburne. With tissue-guarded frontispiece tovolume VIshowing the author at 52. In six volumes. Algernon Charles Swinburne (London, April 5, 1837 - London, April 10, 1909) was an English poet, playwright, novelist, and critic. He invented the roundel form, wrote several novels, and contributed to the famous Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in every year from 1903 to 1907 and again in 1909. His mastery of vocabulary, rhyme and metre is impressive. After the first Poems and Ballads, in volume I of this set, Swinburne's later poetry is devoted more to philosophy and politics (notably, in favour of the unification of Italy, particularly in the volume Songs before Sunrise). He does not stop writing love poetry entirely (including his great epic-length poem, Tristram of Lyonesse), but the content is much less shocking. His versification, and especially his rhyming technique, remain in top form to the end. With armorial bookplate to each front pastedown of Geoffrey Grant Morris. Binder's stamp to each verso of front free endpapers, Horace G Cummin, Bournemouth. Condition: Expertly rebound in green half Moroccan bindings with gilt titling and rose motifs to spines, with marbled endpapers. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Spines faded to brown though boards remain a good colour. Slight wear to extremities. Front hinge of volume III starting very slightly, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Very bright and clean with just a few scattered spots, mainly to blanks only. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

        Thomas Carlyle's Works

      - London - Chapman and Hall, 1904. - London - Chapman and Hall, 1904 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The standard edition of the collected works of Thomas Carlyle. Containing Volume II (Life of Schiller and the Life of John Sterling), Volume III (Past and Present: Latter Day Pamphlets, The Early Kings or Norway, and an Essay on the Portraits of John Knox), Volume IV (Sartor Resartus amnd on Heroes, Hero-Worship, And the Heroic in History), Volumes V, VI, and VII (Critical and Miscellaneous Essays in Three Volumes), Volume VIII (Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and Travels), Volume IX (Tales by Musaeus, Tieck Richter), Volumes XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII and XVIII(History of Friedrich II of Prussia in Six Volumes). Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 5 February 1881) was a Scottish satirical writer, essayist, historian and teacher during the Victorian era. He called economics the dismal science, wrote articles for the Edinburgh Encyclopedia, and became a controversial social commentator. His first major work, Sartor Resartus (The Tailor Retailored) was begun in 1831 at his home (provided for him by his wife Jane Welsh, from her estate), Craigenputtock, and was intended to be a new kind of book: simultaneously factual and fictional, serious and satirical, speculative and historical. It ironically commented on its own formal structure, while forcing the reader to confront the problem of where 'truth' is to be found. Sartor Resartus was first published periodically in Fraser's Magazine from 1833 to 1834. The text presents itself as an unnamed editor's attempt to introduce the British public to Diogenes Teufelsdrckh, a German philosopher of clothes, who is in fact a fictional creation of Carlyle's. His last major work was the epic life of Frederick the Great (18581865). In this Carlyle tried to show how a heroic leader can forge a state, and help create a new moral culture for a nation. For Carlyle, Frederick epitomized the transition from the liberal Enlightenment ideals of the eighteenth century to a new modern culture of spiritual dynamism: embodied by Germany, its thought and its polity. The book is most famous for its vivid, arguably very biased, portrayal of Frederick's battles, in which Carlyle communicated his vision of almost overwhelming chaos mastered by leadership of genius. Illustrated throughout with forty-six paltes, collated complete, including many folding maps. Fourteen volumes of eighteen only. Condition: In cloth binidings. Externally, smart though with some marks and light bumping. Some fading in places. Internally, generally firmly bound, although strained in a couple of places. Pages are bright and mainly clean, though with some spotting to the first and last few pages as usual. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        Maschinbrief auf Durchschlagpapier m. eigh. Grußworten u. U., 1 Seite, gr-8, Montagnola (Adreßstempel), [1952].

        THE HOLY OFFICE [caption title]

[Pola, Yugoslavia: Privately Printed for the Author, 1904 or 1905].. [Pola, Yugoslavia: Privately Printed for the Author, 1904 or 1905].. Quarto broadsheet (288 x 220 mm). Printed in double columns on recto only. Small rust marks in top margin above title, upper left corner slightly creased and dust -shaded, pencil tip-size chip from extreme lower right corner, but a very good copy. First available printing of James Joyce's second separate publication, preceded by the chimerical [ET TU, HEALY!], privately printed for Joyce's father in 1891 or 1892, of which no copies are known. According to Stanislaus Joyce, his brother commissioned a broadside printing of this poem in Dublin, but due to a shortage of funds was unable to take possession of the edition. It was presumably destroyed by the printer as no copy of that printing has been traced. Because of an "insolent" letter he received from the printer about the matter, when he had the funds Joyce elected to have this fresh printing made in Pola, where he was resident from November 1904 through March of the following year. Slocum and Cahoon suggest the edition consisted of "probably less than 100" copies, which Joyce distributed by mail, and through the efforts of Stanislaus and friends. SLOCUM & CAHOON A2.

FINE BINDING- ZAEHNSDORF] A Heifer of the Dawn

James Parker and Co., London 1904 - Sumptuously bound by Zahensdorf in 1904, signed with gilt bookbinder's pallete on lower front dentelle: "Bound by Zaehnsdorf 1904," and further with the Zaehnsdorf "Exhibition" seal stamped into the lower portion of the rear silk pastedown. A magnificent period binding by Zaehnsdorf in rich full dark blue crushed morocco with very elaborate stippled gilt pattern forming a weaving and swirling pattern on all four corners and extending well towards the center of the covers, with two crown devices pointing in at each corner, and with four stylized clover motifs inlaid in red morocco at each corner. Five raised bands with four heavily gilt and two left for lettering, side edges gilt, attractive gilt stipple design is carried onto dentelles, rich blue silk endsheets and pastedowns. Top edges gilt, others uncut. Extremely fine with no signs of any wear. A remarkable survival and extremely interesting pairing of binding and book: Bain was an oddball history professor who wrote a number of allegorical books (similar to this one) in which he claimed to have been the translator, but after most had been published, it finally became clear he was not the translator, but actually the author.         Synthetic Philosophy of Herbert Spencer [with] Selected Works of Herbert Spencer [and with] An Autobiography (18 Volumes Uniformly Bound, Westminster/Authorized Edition)

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1904.
