HARRY TATE FISHING

Large Advertising Poster on three sheets; total size 2310 x 1020 mm. Printed in colours for pasting onto billboards, this is a very scarce piece of Heath Robinson advertising material apparently not listed in any bibliography. Because it was intended for pasting and subsequent disposal very few copies will have survived. There is some fraying, especially to the edge of the top sheet, and a very small loss in the centre of the top sheet where it has been folded. Each sheet has been folded lengthwise once. Generally an excellent example of a very scarce item which we have been unable to trace elsewhere. Harry Tate [1872 - 1940] was a music hall comedian famous for his sketches on golf, motoring and fishing. Further digital images available on request.

WORKS OF MR. FRANCIS RABELAIS, Doctor In Physick, Containing Five Books of...Gargantua and Pantagruel, Together with the Pantagrueline Prognostication, the Oracle of the Divine Bacbuc, and response of the bottle; Hereunto are annexed the Navigations unto the Sounding Isle and the Isle of Apdests: as likewise the Philosophical cream with a Limousin Epistle. [Translated by Sir Thomas Urquhart of Cromarty]

London: Grant Richards, 1904. 2 volumes. First edition of the W. Heath Robinson illustrated Rabelais, the large paper issue of a book published nearly two decades later in the octavo format. A copy with fine provenance, the Litchfield copy with signatures and his armorial bookplates. With 100 full-page black and white illustrations by W. Heath Robinson, with numerous illustrations in the text, title-pages printed in black and red, full-page photogravure plates at the front, pictorial end-papers printed in red. 4to, publisher's full white polished buckram, the covers ruled and decorated in gilt, the spines fully gilt decorated and lettered. xlii, 377; xliv, 350 pp. A fine set, the cloth clean and with very little evidence of age but for some very light mellowing to the spine panels. FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER ISSUE, AND A PLEASING AND HANDSOME SET OF THIS TIMELESS WORK BY ONE OF THE GREATEST WRITERS OF ALL TIME. THIS EDITION IS WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED BY W. HEATH ROBINSON AND IS CONSIDERED A CLASSIC. AN "EXTRAVAGANT EDITION". "For most English readers Rabelais has taken the very form and pressure of his eccentric, full-blooded translator, and doubtless would have smiled upon the joyous excess to which Urquhart, with the aid of Cotgrave's lustily Rabelaisian Deictionary (1611) carried his verbal gymnastics" (OHEL). "One of the most perfect transfusions of an author from one language into another that ever man accomplished. In point of style Urquhart was Rabelais incarnate, and in his enjoyment of the verbal resources, whether of science or pseudo-science or slang, he almost surpassed Rabelais himself" (DNB). The original owner of these volumes, E. Hubert Litchfield was a noted personage. He was author of works relating to travel and adventure and was, quite significantly, a collector of fine and important books and manuscripts. His collection was sold by Sotheby's (Parke-Bernet) in December 1951. These volumes, with Mr. Litchfield's bookplates were sold in that sale. Both his signatures and armorial bookplates are within. The books have been privately owned for many years prior to their offering here.

        Tale of Peter Rabbit

1904. American Printing of 'Peter Rabbit'In the Original Dust JacketPOTTER, Beatrix. The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Altemus' Wee Books for Wee Folks. Thirty-one Illustrations. Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company, 1904. First Edition Printed in America, second format (printed ca. 1905).Sixteenmo (5 7/16 x 4 inches; 138 x 103 mm.). [3]-127, [3, blank] pp., including thirty-one color plates after the designs by Potter, and Peter Rabbit vignette on half-title. Text printed in black.Publisher's medium green cloth, cover stamped pictorially in black, white, blue, and red, spine and front cover lettered in red. Pictorial end-papers printed in orange, not of Potter's design. Original beige dust jacket, printed in green, red and yellow, with Altemus advertisement on back panel, Peter Rabbit picture and lettering on front, and "Altemus' Wee Books Peter Rabbit No. 3" lettered on spine. Jacket very slightly chipped at spine extremities, with minimal loss. With a Christmas, 1907 ink inscription on blank verso of frontispiece. A wonderful copy of this juvenile classic in the rare pictorial dust jacket. We presume our copy to have been published in 1905 as the last title listed on the rear panel of the dust jacket is "Who Killed Cock Robin" which was published in 1905."When Frederick Warne first published Peter Rabbit in London [in 1902], they sent a few copies to their firm in New York where, due to a misunderstanding, they were unfortunately sold before copyright was properly obtained. And for that reason the copyright for the book remains to this day in 'public domain' in the United States" (Quinby, p. 18). Altemus was the first to take advantage of this situation, copying the text and illustrations from Warne and issuing in 1904 not only the first pirated edition, but also the first edition printed in America. This edition was reprinted for several years without changing the "1904" date on the title-page. "Aletemus published Peter Rabbit in three different formats, The first format which is the rarest was published only in 1904" This little book had a gray cloth over floral boards, front cover with an oval color illustration of Peter Rabbit pasted-on. "By the end of 1904, Altemus had begun publishing the second format of the Wee Books for Wee Folks Series. Initially the book had a green cover? The inside of the book was identical to the first edition book. Between 1908-1912, Altemus published Peter Rabbit with a whitish/beige designed cover. This latter book dropped the decorated end papers. The illustrations are the same for the first three books. These books also have the curious set up such that there is a picture opposite of each page of text and then two blank pages. By 1917 a third format of the second edition was published. This blue book dropped the blank pages and the illustrations are different from preceding volumes. This book and all that followed it had 63 pages. The previous books had 123 pages." Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Gründelwald, 30. XII. 1904. - 6 ½ SS. auf 2 Doppelbll. 8vo.

        Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

Edward Arnold, 1904. 1st edition. Hardcover, oatmeal-coloured buckram, with yapp edges, in near fine condition, spine not browned as is often the case. Internally, the pages and the four plates are clean bar an occasional light spot, name on fep, the tissue guard over the frontispiece intact, publisher's catalogue at rear. The author's first volume of eight ghost stories contains the classic tale 'Oh Whistle, And I'll Come To You, My Lad', and James hoped that all the stories in the book might make the reader feel 'pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at nightfall'. By general consent he achieved exactly that, and his influence on the genre of supernatural fiction has never been questioned. This particular copy of his famous book is very nice indeed.

To the controversial Viennese publisher Fritz Freund (1879-1950), regarding a collection of Lemonnier short stories which he was anonymously translating in collaboration with Friedrich Fischl. "Das Fischermädchen", "Der erste Schnee" und "Guter Rat". 3 autograph poems. N. p. o. d.

1904. 12+12+16 lines on 1¾ pp. 8vo. A fair copy manuscript, written in brown ink, formerly owned by the poet's son Friedrich and presented by him as a memento possibly to the publisher Friedrich Cohn in 1904 "Und es klagen ihre Tränen: | Weit der Himmel, tief die See, | Doch noch weiter geht mein Sehnen, | Und noch tiefer ist mein Weh [...]" (from "Das Fischermädchen"). - This exquisitely written leaf was presented by Fontane's youngest son Friedrich (1864-1941) in 1904 apparently to Theodor Friedrich Cohn (1864-1936), a fellow partner in the Berlin publishing house of F. Fontane & Co. Although the date of the present manuscript is uncertain, all three of the present poems were originally written in the 1840s ("Guter Rat": 1849; "Das Fischermädchen": by 1844; "Der erste Schnee": 1841) and published in 1851. The present text of "Das Fischermädchen" and "Der erste Schnee" differs in places from the complete edition: see Theodor Fontane: Sämtliche Werke XX, pp. 7, 15-16).
