        The Story of a Troll-Hunt.

Cambridge: Printed at the University Press, 1904 - Quarto. Original vellum backed grey boards, lettered in black on front cover. Spotting to vellum spine, light rubbing to corners, light off setting to endpapers. A very good copy. Illustrated throughout by James McBryde. First edition, first impression, of a putative edition of 100 copies and decidedly uncommon: Copac lists only three locations in British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, V&A, Cambridge), OCLC adds just five more. "James McBryde was a student and friend of M. R. James (MRJ). He came up to King's[Cambridge] in 1893 to read Natural Sciences. Although McBryde was 10 years younger than MRJ the pair became firm friends. McBryde joined MRJ's bookish circle and was one of the select few who heard MRJ's ghost stories by the light of a candle in a draughty set of rooms at King's. The friendship between the two men outlived McBryde's Cambridge career and between 1899 and 1901 they travelled each year to Denmark and Sweden. These adventures would later inspire two of MRJ's ghost stories ('No. 13' and 'Count Magnus') and McBryde's children's book The Story of the Troll-Hunt. The story told of three Cambridge men who travelled to Jutland to hunt monsters to bring back to the Fitzwilliam Museum - MRJ was the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum from 1893 to 1908. McBryde and his wife Gwendolyn settled in London in 1904 when McBryde enrolled at the Slade School of Art. Shortly after beginning his art studies, MRJ approached him with the idea of illustrating his ghost stories. McBryde, already familiar with the stories, welcomed the opportunity. Sadly. McBryde died a month later of complications following an appendix operation. It has been suggested the McBryde was the love of MRJ's life. MRJ is known to have picked flowers from the Fellows Garden at King's and travelled up with them on the train to McBryde's funeral in Lancashire where he tossed them into his friend's grave. After McBryde's death, MRJ arranged for the publication of The Story of a Troll-Hunt with Cambridge University Press and wrote an introduction for the volume. One of its illustrations is a cartoon of MRJ, James McBryde and William Johnson Stone sitting on a bench on the Backs plotting their adventure. MRJ was named legal guardian of McBryde's daughter Jane who was born six months after her father's death. MRJ, the consummate Victorian bachelor, maintained a lifelong friendship with McBryde's widow Gwendolyn and his daughter Jane. The two women became a surrogate family for him" (King's College, Cambridge online). Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy, I p. 145. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Binding, Fine- Zaehnsdorf] A Heifer of the Dawn

London: James Parker and Co., 1904. First edition. Sumptuously bound by Zahensdorf in 1904, signed with gilt bookbinder's pallete on lower front dentelle: "Bound by Zaehnsdorf 1904," and further with the Zaehnsdorf "Exhibition" seal stamped into the lower portion of the rear silk pastedown. A magnificent period binding by Zaehnsdorf in rich full dark blue crushed morocco with very elaborate stippled gilt pattern forming a weaving and swirling pattern on all four corners and extending well towards the center of the covers, with two crown devices pointing in at each corner, and with four stylized clover motifs inlaid in red morocco at each corner. Five raised bands with four heavily gilt and two left for lettering, side edges gilt, attractive gilt stipple design is carried onto dentelles, rich blue silk endsheets and pastedowns. Top edges gilt, others uncut. Extremely fine with no signs of any wear. A remarkable survival and extremely interesting pairing of binding and book: Bain was an oddball history professor who wrote a number of allegorical books (similar to this one) in which he claimed to have been the translator, but after most had been published, it finally became clear he was not the translator, but actually the author.

1904. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Kl.-8vo.

Berlin, Dietrich Reimer (Ernst Vohsen) 1904. Neue Regionen".         THE SEA-WOLF

1904. With Illustrations by W. J. Aylward. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1904. 3 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in dark blue, red and white. First Edition of Jack London's great maritime tale, in emulation of Joseph Conrad: in need of the taste of salt air to stimulate him, London wrote most of the book perched on the hatch of his sloop as it sat at anchor. The book consists of three sub-plots, all quite pertinent to London's life at the time. In the first, similar to Kipling's CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS, Van Weyden is forced by necessity into becoming a rough sailor -- much as Jack had done on board the "Sophia Sutherland" when he had gone on a sealing voyage at age seventeen. In the second, Van Weyden and Wolf Larsen carry their love-hate relationship to a fight to the death -- just as Jack was "confessing to George Sterling his man's love of the poet's beauty." And in the third, Van Weyden begins a relationship with the castaway Maud Brewster -- at the time when Jack found Charmian Kittredge.~The creation of the character of Larsen, blended from Melville's Ahab, Milton's Lucifer, and an actual seal-poacher called Alexander McLean, was a triumph that could call forth praise even from Ambrose Bierce. Larsen also seemed to be a version of Nietzsche's Superman... Only after the book was completed did Jack begin to read the new translations of Nietzsche and to recognize an explanation for his own "long sickness"... [quotes from Sinclair]~Macmillan was so excited about this book that it produced a first edition of 63,337 copies, of which 40,000 were sold before its release. Although the book was indeed a huge success, it did little to pull its author out of his "long sickness."~The spine lettering of this copy is in white, like most copies (a minority has gilt there, though any priority is unknown). It is a bright copy, fine except for very slight rubbing mainly at the extremities. Though not a scarce book, fine copies are not easy to find. Sisson & Martens p. 20; Blanck 11882.

Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, ubi humana omnia non nisi somnium esse ostendit, atque obiter plurima scitu sanequam digna commemorat

London: Methuen, 1904. Modern fine press edition of Francesco Colonna's 1499 Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, originally published in Venice by Aldus Manutius, often considered the most beautiful book of the Italian Renaissance. The convoluted narrative, "the strife of love in a dream," follows Poliphilo in pursuit of his beloved Polia, a quest that forces him through a series of allegorical landscapes and trials, ending only when he awakes. The book's fame rests on its extraordinary woodcuts, precise and dreamlike, which influenced generations of artists. The Hypnerotomachia served as a source book of Renaissance imagery, a detailed architectural record, and a showcase for Aldus's typographic and compositional virtuosity, featuring Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic types, and even hieroglyphics. (The iconic woodcut of the elephant and obelisk made its way to Salvador Dalí by way of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.) This 1904 Methuen edition is a page-for-page facsimile of the 1499 Aldine first edition. From the library of illustrator Pickford Waller, with an extraordinary 1921 bookplate by Austin Osman Spare, the English artist and occultist "popularly compared at different times with Beardsley, Albrecht Dürer, William Blake, Michelangelo, and Rembrandt," and condemned as "a black magician" by Aleister Crowley himself (DNB). A fine copy, handsomely bound by Philip Dusel. Folio, modern full brick morocco, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, text block uncut. Facsimile of the 1499 Aldine first edition, including the 172 original woodcuts by an unknown hand; additional paper spine label tipped in. Two extra leaves laid in, including the uncensored Priapus plate. Bookplate of Pickford Waller, featuring a nude figure, designed by Austin Osman Spare.

Areopagitica. A Speech of Mr. John Milton for the Liberty of Unlicenc'd Printing, to the Parlament of England

London: Eragny Press, 1904. Fine press edition of John Milton's 1644 essay on the freedom of the press, one of 134 copies for sale out of a total print run of 160 copies. Subtitled "A Speech of Mr. John Milton for the Liberty of Unlicenc'd Printing, to the Parlament of England," Areopagitica was Milton's forceful protest against Parliament's re-establishment of press censorship during the English Civil War. "Truth & understanding are not such wares as to be monopoliz'd and traded in by tickets and statutes, and standards. We must not think to make a staple commodity of all the knowledge in the Land, to mark & licence it like our broad cloath, and our wooll packs." The essay's most celebrated line is chiseled over the entrance of the New York Public Library's Main Reading Room: "a good Booke is the pretious life-blood of a master spirit, imbalm'd & treasur'd up on purpose to a life beyond life." Printer Lucien Pissarro and his wife Esther, an English artist, founded the Eragny Press in 1894. Son of the painter Camille Pissarro, Lucien originally trained as an artist alongside Gauguin, Degas, and Seurat. He moved to England to pursue a career in book illustration, where he was invited into fine press circles by his mentor, Charles Ricketts of the Vale Press. Pissarro named his own press Eragny after the French village his family called home. The press was celebrated for its exceptional wood engravings, and its distinctive mix of French Impressionist and English Arts and Crafts styles. Unlike their contemporaries William Morris and Charles Ricketts, the Pissarros executed the presswork of their publications themselves, with Esther playing the primary role. The Pissarros printed Areopagitica for the first time in October 1903, but a fire at the bindery destroyed all but forty paper and ten vellum copies before any could be sold. This second issue, published in March 1904, consisted of 160 copies, with 134 available for sale. Genz EP18a. A striking fine press edition of Milton's classic defense of free speech, in fine condition, splendidly bound. Quarto: [1-3] 4-37 [38-40]. Contemporary full burgundy morocco elaborately tooled with repeating flower motif in blind, succeeding rows of ruling and circular decoration in gilt, armorial device tooled in gilt at center, raised bands, spine compartments elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt, gilt-ruled dentelles with gilt leaf devices tooled to cornerpieces, six binder's blanks before and after text block. Title page printed in red and black, first page of text framed within elaborate wood-engraved decorative border with large floriated initial printed in red, smaller floriated initials throughout, additional notes printed in red, colophon printed in red and black, Eragny Press wood-engraved device to verso of colophon leaf. Hint of sunning to spine.

London in the time of the Tudors. A Reproduction, Reduced, of the Map by Ralph Agas, Circa 1560.

London: Adam and Charles Black, 1904. unbound. Panorama. Uncolored lithograph. Image measures 17.5 x 38.25". This exceptional map is a reduction of the famous and important Ralph Agas map of London, the earliest map of London known to be in existence. Shows a birds-eye view or panorama of London and includes parts of Whitehall, Southwark and the countryside of Middlesex in the distance. Depicts London bounded by the city walls with fields beyond. The London Bridge across the Thames is included. Beautifully illustrated, the map identifies several important buildings. The original map was created when the Tudor family ruled the Kingdom of England between 1485 and 1603. The population of London at the time was under 100000.<br><br>Although Ralph Agas was originally identified as the maps creator, there is no certainty as to who actually drew the map. First engraved on wood, the map is now commonly also known as the "woodcut" map. According to an inscription on the 1578 engraving of the Agas map in Oxford, the author claims that he had been hoping to undertake a survey of London for the last decade, but had been unable to do so. Although the statement can be considered unreliable evidence, the woodcut map was later dated to the early 1560s and further considered to be based on a map from the 1550s. Hence Agas's involvement in the creation of this map is now regarded doubtful (Agas was presumed to be born in the 1540s). The map however, is still often referred to as the "Agas" map.<br><br>This particular reduced copy accompanied "London in the Time of the Tudors" by Sir Walter Besant, published by Adam and Charles Black in 1904 and is a from a facsimile of the original map by Edward J. Francis in the possession of John C. Francis. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the folds. Left margin exhibits a small tear where the map was attached to the book.<br><br>Ralph Agas (circa 1540-1621) was an English surveyor and engraver from Suffolk who is particularly known for his " Oxonia Antiqua Restaurata", a detailed plan or birds-eye view map of Oxford. Some early maps of London and Cambridge were formerly attributed to him, but these attributions have since been regarded questionable.<br><br>Adam Black (1784-1874) was a Scottish publisher and politician who, with his brother Charles, founded the A & C Black publishing company. Together they published a wide range of materials, including atlases, medical books, and the 7th, 8th and 9th editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica. This is a beautiful example of one of the earliest and interesting maps of London.

        HARRY TATE FISHING

Large Advertising Poster on three sheets; total size 2310 x 1020 mm. Printed in colours for pasting onto billboards, this is a very scarce piece of Heath Robinson advertising material apparently not listed in any bibliography. Because it was intended for pasting and subsequent disposal very few copies will have survived. There is some fraying, especially to the edge of the top sheet, and a very small loss in the centre of the top sheet where it has been folded. Each sheet has been folded lengthwise once. Generally an excellent example of a very scarce item which we have been unable to trace elsewhere. Harry Tate [1872 - 1940] was a music hall comedian famous for his sketches on golf, motoring and fishing. Further digital images available on request.
