BOOK OF THE CHILD

SMITH, JESSIE WILLCOX. (SMITH,JESSIE WILLCOX AND ELIZABETH SHIPPEN GREEN)illus. THE BOOK OF THE CHILD by Mabel Humphrey. NY: Frederick Stokes, October 1903. Large folio (13 3/4" x 15"). cloth backed pictorial boards, except for slight general soil and tip wear this is a bright, clean and near Fine copy. First edition. In 1902, with Smith's and Green's successful Bryn Mawr calendar behind them, the two women collaborated on a "self-invested calendar project that featured some of the most beautiful works either woman ever painted." (Schnessel p. 38). Stokes immediately asked to publish the illustrations in book form and commissioned Mabel Humphrey to write poems to match the illustrations. The result was the Book Of The Child. Printed on rectos only (one side of the paper), there are 4 magnificent full page color illustrations by Green (one is tipped-in) with smaller illustrations in-text. There are 3 exquisite full page color illustrations by Smith plus the charming color cover (on both covers) as well as smaller text illustrations. The colors are rich and the artwork is almost breathtaking. (A few are reproduced in Schnessel p. 56-7,65 but only 1 in color). This is a scarce title, rarely found in such clean condition.

        The Tailor of Gloucester

London: Frederick Warne and Co.,, 1903. Sextodecimo. Original red morocco, title front cover gilt, illustrated endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom red cloth chemise and quarter red morocco and cloth slipcase. Spine faded, spine ends renewed, hinges repaired, outer leaves a little finger-marked; an excellent, bright copy. First edition, first impression, deluxe issue, in an unrecorded morocco binding, apparently a publisher's binding, although not lettered as such. Bound in before the frontispiece is the extra illustration intended for the front cover label of regular copies. With the first impression points: the single endpaper occurring four times and the title page dated 1903. This binding is unrecorded. The gilt lettering is not uniform with the Peter Rabbit series, but the original decorative endpapers indicate that it is a publisher's binding. The following year, Warne bound up two special copies of Peter Rabbit in green morocco, one of which she presented to the Prince of Wales. That binding is uniform in general appearance to the regular trade editions, and it may be that the present copy represents something of a trial run for extra special bindings.

Frauenfigur vor angedeutetem Männerkopf im Hintergrund. Pastös, teils mehrschichtig aufgetragene expressive Malweise. Eingeritzte Signatur oben links. Nicht datiert.

65 x 49 cm.

        The Call of the Wild

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1903 Illustrated by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. Decorated by Charles Edward Hooper. First edition, first printing. Publisher's decorative olive green cloth designed by the unidentified designer with the monogram "CX" with three panel illustration of sled dogs and their masters in the Yukon to the front board in red, white, and black, illustration of a sled dog to the spine in red, white, and black, lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, blue pictorial endpapers illustrated by Hooper, pictorial title page illustrated by Hooper. Very good or better, with a slight lean to the spine, some rubbing to the extremities, gilt and white stamping much brighter than usual, sturdy hinges, fresh interior. Overall, a very clean and attractive copy. BAL 11876 Originally published serially in The Saturday Evening Post in 1903, The Call of the Wild is the story of a domesticated dog harnessing his wild instincts during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon Territory. The novel is written from the point of view of the main character Buck, a St. Bernard-Scotch Collie, who is stolen from his happy home in California and, after being mistreated by a series of handlers along the way, is taken to the Klondike region of Canada to be trained to work as a sled dog. Although he struggles to adapt to pack life, Buck quickly proves himself, becomes pack leader, and eventually finds a new, benevolent owner, with whom he remains until the owner's death, at which point Buck goes completely "into the wild." In 1906, London published the companion novel White Fang, the thematic opposite of The Call of the Wild; while The Call of the Wild concerns a dog's natural wild instincts, White Fang is about an undomesticated creature's ability to be tamed.. Illus. by Goodwin, Philip R.; Bulll, Charles Livingston; Hooper, Charles Edward. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

        NYASALAND UNDER THE FOREIGN OFFICE

London: George Bell and Sons, 1903. First edition, the best of the issues with the deluxe binding and extra illustration. 17 illustrations on 16 full-page plates, 1 coloured folding map. 8vo, publisher’s best binding of original green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt and black on the upper cover. xvi, 422, including index. A fine, bright and very handsome copy. RARE IN THIS BINDING AND PREFERRED ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION. The author says in his preface that every word of this book, except for a few connecting paragraphs and explanatory notes necessary for coherence, was written “among the scenes which it treats. It has been my habit to record personal experiences and impressions as nearly as possible at the time of their occurrence...” This quality of the work gives it the immediacy, “freshness and accuracy rarely absent from a narrative compiled on the spot.” He treats the reader to a history of the founding of the protectorate and his own personal connections to it as well as sections on its wildlife, big game, and physical, moral, and mental qualities of the natives and their customs and beliefs. He also shares the missionary accomplishments in the area and characteristics of the British administration there. Includes an appendix on game hunting regulations.

Form & Farbe im Fla chenschmuck.

Julius Hoffman. Stuttgart. No date. Ca. 1903. - 13 ONLY (of 24) color lithograph plates, sheets 18 x 13 inches, cloth covered thin boards (hardbound). Covers moderately soiled; the plates are in excellent condition with light spots to a few outer margins. AS IS. This is a gathering of 13 of the plates from the collection Form & Farbe im Flachenschmuck, originally published in a portfolio but here bound into a serviceable cloth binding; paint marks on the cover suggest that it was actually used in an artist's studio. A paper label for the bookstore Ludvig Schuth of Kobenhavn has been glued over the what was likely the original publisher's name. Each plate features a number of stunning Art Nouveau wall covering designs by artists Rudolph Rochga and Paul Haustein. While the visual motif is overwhelmingly Art Nouveau, a number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics to emerge in upcoming decades. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1903 - ARNOLD, Matthew. The Works. London: Macmillan, 1903-4. Fifteen volumes. Octavo, contemporary full crushed blue morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards, raised bands, crushed brown morocco doublures, watered silk endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut and largely unopened. $5500.Edition de Luxe, one of only 775 sets produced, of Arnold's elegant and influential poetry and prose, beautifully bound."The cry of revolt sounds in the poetry of Arnold's earlier life; the aspiration towards a new society in the prose writings of his later years" (Baugh et al., 1407). The most modern of the major Victorian poets in outlook, Arnold remains best known for "Dover Beach," the melancholy poem about the loss of faith he wrote on his honeymoon; other such notable verses as "The Scholar-Gipsy," "Stanzas from the Grand Chartreuse," "Thyrsis" and "Empedocles on Etna" all appear here. This edition also contains his critical prose, including Culture and Anarchy, Essays in Criticism and On the Study of Celtic Literature. Three volumes of correspondence complete the set. The Diaries of Rev. W. E. Preston Haas of Media, PA and Bertha Haas: 81 volumes (Containg the years 1903 - 1965)

Handwritten diaries 1903 - 87 volumes. An incredible collection of the life of Rev. W.E. Preston Haas (11 April 1903 - April 1965) and his mother Bertha Haas. Small standard diaries. Contains the years 1903, 1908-1964. Multiple volumes for a number of years. Haas was the pastor at Lima United Methodist Church. He lived off Middletown Rd in Delaware Co. (Near Media) Pennsylvania with his family. Haas also worked in Methodist ministry in Philadelphia and Bristol. The diaries have hand written entries of the each day?s work for 57 years. Haas's hand writing is in very legible, clean ink. Most of the entries deal with the service he gave to his community and his day to day life. The names of local families he worked with at births, weddings, funerals, christenings, convocations, communions, remembrances of those lost in the two world wars give a vision of this man's life. His charitable work with the Old Fellow's (IOOF, he served as Grand Master in 1946) was also an important part of his life. The names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, and deaths of the members of his congregation are recorded. Most the entries are mundane, but a number of entries in the 1950s deal with the Soviet Union. Some diaries have color maps of the world. It is interesting to see how borders changed during Haas's lifetime. Additionally, the collection includes a earlier diaries and legers by Bertha E. Haas (Preston's mother who lived in Burlington NJ, b. 1880?) (in 1908 Preston received a telescope for his Birthday). SN 197-30-7860. A wealth of genealogical and local Methodist history. Please inquire for additional information. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1903 - ROOSEVELT, Theodore. Works. New York and London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1903. Fourteen volumes. Small octavo, contemporary three-quarter red morocco, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $5000."Prairie" edition of selected writings by the adventurous 26th president of the United States, each volume with a frontispiece illustration.Includes a selection of Roosevelt's most important histories, essays and hunting stories published up to the year 1903, including The Naval War of 1812 and The Winning of the West. While a student at Harvard, Roosevelt "published (with a friend) a paper of professional quality on birds of the Adirondacks and wrote a senior thesis that called for limited voting rights for women and their 'most absolute equality' in marriage. He also wrote the first two chapters of The Naval War of 1812 (1882), a work of meticulous scholarship acclaimed in British and American naval circles alike". By Roosevelt's graduation the qualities that were to attract, repel, or bemuse his countrymen for four decades became pronounced. He abounded in physical and mental energy, acted often on impulse and at times on shrewd calculation, and generally exuded warmth, affection, and charm. He possessed the gift of words, though he limited their flow with difficulty; and even when he was moralizing, his force and imagery made him unfailingly interesting" (ANB). Wheelock, 5. WYLDER'S HAND. A NOVEL .

Downey & Co. n.d. [1903]., London - Octavo, pp. [i-ii] [i-ii] [iii] iv-v [vi] [1] 2-387 [388: blank] [note: title leaf is an insert], original decorated dark green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, publisher's monogram stamped in blind on rear panel. First British one-volume edition. First published by Bentley in 1864 (in three volumes). One of a quartet of horror novels produced in the mid-1860s, "four sensational novels that are the best of their kind . brilliant mid-Victorian novels of mystery and suspense." - Bleiler (ed), Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, p. 224-225. ". a superb mystery tale of murder and retributive fate. Le Fanu at the height of his powers weaves an intricate plot and keeps the readers breathless with expectation and excitement . This is a bizarre tale which in its raw, jagged power almost equals WUTHERING HEIGHTS." - Devendra P. Varma, Arno Press promotional brochure for The Collected Works of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1976), pp. 22-3. "Somber thriller in which the implacable working of fate brings the guilty to account, after the fashion of Le Fanu's best short stories (though the supernatural aspects are carefully understated). Similar in some ways to Wilkie Collins's melodramas . but grimmer in outlook." - Barron (ed), Horror Literature 2-52. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 2-64. Hubin (1994), p. 493. Cloth rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, spine lean, free endpapers tanned, a bright, very good copy. An uncommon edition of this novel. (#156344) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Complete Works

1903 - EMERSON, Ralph Waldo. Complete Works. Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1903-04. Twelve volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter green morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled endpapers and boards, top edges gilt, uncut and unopened. $12,500."Autograph Centenary" edition, number 37 of 600 copies, illustrated with 56 photogravures, with original manuscript leaf in Emerson's hand discussing poetry and imagination mounted in Volume I, handsomely bound.Emerson's writings "challenge the very process by which we read and think, and his ideas are considered to be at the very heart of questions about the development of American literature and identity" (ANB). This edition includes all of Emerson's poems, lectures, biographical sketches and letters, as well as his famous essays, several of which here see print for the first time. Their "ethical inspiration and stimulation, their occasional startling phrase, their individualistic idealism, which stirred renascent Yankee New England to its depths, speaks with the same simple power and force in the midst of modern complexities" (Grolier, American 100 47). The manuscript leaf, measuring 8 by 10 inches and written on both sides, is a paragraph from Emerson's 1856 essay "English Traits," and reads: "Defoe said in his wrath, that, the Englishman was the mud of all races. I incline to the belief, that, as water, lime & sand make mortar, so certain temperaments marry well, & by well-managed contrarieties, develop as drastic a character as the English. On the whole, it is not so much a history of one or of certain tribes of Saxons or Frisians coming from one place & genetically identical, as it is an anthology of temperaments out of them all. Certain temperaments suit""the sky & soil of England, say, eight or ten or twenty varieties, as, out of a hundred pear-trees, eight or ten suit the soil of a particular orchard, & thrive, whilst all the unadapted temperaments die out." This is nearly identical to the published version, which reads "Saxons, Jutes, or Frisians" rather than simply "Saxons or Frisians." Illustrated with 56 engravings and photogravures. Short split along fold of manuscript leaf. Interiors fine, minor expert restoration to two spines. A very handsome set in fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
