1903. ROOSEVELT, Theodore. Works. New York and London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1903. Fourteen volumes. Small octavo, contemporary three-quarter red morocco, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $5000.“Prairie” edition of selected writings by the adventurous 26th president of the United States, each volume with a frontispiece illustration.Includes a selection of Roosevelt's most important histories, essays and hunting stories published up to the year 1903, including The Naval War of 1812 and The Winning of the West. While a student at Harvard, Roosevelt ""published (with a friend) a paper of professional quality on birds of the Adirondacks and wrote a senior thesis that called for limited voting rights for women and their 'most absolute equality' in marriage. He also wrote the first two chapters of The Naval War of 1812 (1882), a work of meticulous scholarship acclaimed in British and American naval circles alikeÂ… By Roosevelt's graduation the qualities that were to attract, repel, or bemuse his countrymen for four decades became pronounced. He abounded in physical and mental energy, acted often on impulse and at times on shrewd calculation, and generally exuded warmth, affection, and charm. He possessed the gift of words, though he limited their flow with difficulty; and even when he was moralizing, his force and imagery made him unfailingly interesting"" (ANB). Wheelock, 5.         Typed Letter, Signed ("S Newcomb"), to the editors of The Independent, inquiring as to the fate of his article on "The Outlook for the Flying Machine"

Washington, D.C. 1903 - One page. 12mo. A brief and intriguing letter from the Canadian-born mathematical astronomer and political economist Simon Newcomb (1835-1909), inquiring about the receipt of his article, "The Outlook for the Flying Machine", which he had sent the preceding week. "I am somewhat concerned in not having received from you a proof of my article on The Outlook for the Flying Machine ? nor even any intimation that you had received either the article or the figures." He was in charge of the telescope at the U.S. Naval Observatory and later superintendent of the Almanac Office of the U.S. Navy. "he parlayed his planetary studies into an international project to bring order to the different national ephemerides through the adoption of uniform constants and consistent positional data. By the turn of the century, many of Newcomb's new constants, tables, and theories were becoming the norm in positional astronomy, a status that they retained through the mid-twentieth century. Newcomb received the Copley Medal of the Royal Society of London in 1890" (ANB). Newcomb could not know that his article was published in The Independent on the same day this letter was written. In the article he stated famously, "Quite likely the twentieth century is destined to see the natural forces which will enable us to fly from continent to continent with a speed far exceeding that of the bird." He was of the opinion, however, that the "the present state of our knowledge" was insufficient to permit powered flight; he did not know that the Wright Borthers had advanced that state of knowledge and would achieve sustained flight just a few weeks after this note was written. A few old wrinkles. Fine. Orange half morocco folding case [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Extremely scarce inscribed first edition of Kollontai's first book, an economic study about the Finnish workers. The 'Life of the Finnish Workers' was Kollontai's "major socio-economic investigation of the living and working condition of the Finnish workers and peasant in relation to industry". Her "first articles on Finnland appeared in 1900. For the next 20 years, she was generally recognized as the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party's (RSDLP) foremost expert on the 'Finnish question', writing numerous articles and serving as an advisor to RSDLP members in the Tsarist Duma and as a liaison with Finnish revolutionaries. She took a keen interest in the Finnish struggle for independence, (Kollontai's mother was from Finland), helped the Finnish workers to organize into trade unions and wrote articles about the struggle between the Finnish people and the the Russian autocracy. Well known for her sympathy for Finland, Kollontai urged the Finns to seek independence in 1917. [?]. The book attracted much attention among revolutionary circles and established her fame as noteworthy Marxist political economist and a respected expert in the working-class question." (Saarinen, et al., 2014.) Alexandra Mikhailovna Kollontai (1872-1952) was a Russian revolutionary, as early feminist active in international Socialist Women's movement, foremost advocator of free love. In 1917 elected to Central Committee and served as Commissar for Social Welfare in the Soviet government. One of the first women in modern time to hold the post of ambassador in 1923. Inscribed books by Kollontai are extremely scarce. This work, her first book, is also a rarity itself. We could trace only one copy in institutional holdings in US, and six in Europe.
